Ok we all seen teams attempt long FG & the other teams put a player "safety" back to return if attempt is short. Here is the question...Could the player try to block the FG by the goal post? If so why not put your best jumper back there to block it. anybody??????

The ball is a live ball until it passes through the goal post- just like a punt.

The angle at which FG attempts are coming down would make catch/ block highly unlikely. That being said, I wonder why we've never seen it done on some of the uber-long attempts...

There is no rule against doing this but it is borderline impossible. The ball is live, not only could you slap it away but you could jump up, catch it, and run the other way with it.

I've never seen it done and I don't think we will ever see it done but I can only imagine the pandemonium that would ensue if it actually DID happen. We would be inviting all sorts of new instant replay rules.

excellent question, I have never thought of that but if you had a player, starter or backup that was one of those 6'9" guys it would sure be worth a try but then again if you had a player that tall they should probably be in a position to block the kick because the trajectory of the kick is low for that far of a kick

Good job!!!! thanks

The kicker was George Blanda. He's always been a minor hero of mine. He played in the NFL until he was 48 or 49. Played quarterback at that age. Makes Brett Farve look like a teenager.

I saw it done once when I was in college.

But it is darn near impossible to try on a regular basis. Need a guy who can jump like a kangaroo and the ball has to barely clear the crossbar.

Would a 6'9" jumper have a better chance of blocking it at the line of scrimage?
