LONDON (AFP) - A 13-year-old British girl who did not realise she was pregnant has given birth to a baby weighing three kilos (six-and-a-half pounds) she has named Sophie.
Charlotte Maddox said she remembered feeling "a bit podgy" but did not know she was pregnant until she went into labour. Initially, she put her contractions down to a stomach infection.
"I was screaming in pain and put it down to eating too much. I was screaming in pain and shouted, 'I've got to push something, it's coming!'" she told Britain's Daily Mirror.
"That was the first time I realised I was pregnant and about to become a mum. Suddenly the pain disappeared and I was in total shock.
"The next thing I knew was hearing Sophie scream for the first time. I was so relieved she was safe. Then it suddenly hit me that I was a mum.
"My whole life had changed in three hours. I went from feeling a bit poorly and worrying about my homework to holding a newborn baby in my arms and worrying about a new life."
The teenager, from Devon, southwest England, said she had lost her virginity on the day of her 13th birthday.
She was living with a foster family at the time, although she returned to live with her parents in September.
She said she had no desire to see the 15-year-old father of her baby daughter.
"I don't want him looking after her. He wasn't the nicest boy in the world, and I think we will be better off without him," she said.

That labor was nothing compared to what she will go through now. I wish kids had a better understanding of that. Or forget the understanding part, just good old fear worked fine for me. :D

Kids are fearless these days. We give them too much power now. I like the good "Old fashioned" parents. "Go out there and pick yourself a switch"
Half of the board just asked themselves "What's a switch"
By the way <making googly eyes> Morning Miss Kitty.

give me a FREAKING break!!! How do you NOT know you are pregnant. Is this kid a total moron?? Believe me, I totally knew I was - especially with the two 7 lb twins:) I'm only 5'3" so there was no hiding that one..haha.
As far as the comment about getting your own switch - I had to climb a willow tree to get mine. Daddy also had a nice thin belt that he used. the problem with today is that if you discipline too harshly or spank, you are threatened with punishment. Didn't stop me from disciplining and mine have turned out okay so far. I turned out okay and I received my share of the wuppins' when I was a kid (every one well deserved I might add). I had no choice with a former Korean War paratrooper ex-POW Marine for a father...bless his soul...loved him terribly and miss him even more. Of course, whenever I disciplined the kids, he was the first to run to their defense - grandfathers are great like that.

:) I'm not a woman...but that's the same thing I said.."How can you not know you are pregnant? When you climbed the tree to get your switch, did you have to go back and get another one because the one you picked was too small? My grandmother made me get mine from a Fig tree. Then afterwards, she would tell us to put the milk from the figs on the welps to help heal them.

I know this sounds crazy, but it happenes. It happened to my best friend in college. She was going to school full time maintianing a 3.8 at A&M, working full time, and partying in between. She was never heavy just built kind of stocky, not thin. She did not know, I did not know, nobody knew. She got really sick at work one night, thought she was having appendicitis or something. She called me we went to the ER. Imagine the look on her face when she found out she was about to give birth. I nearly fainted. She gave birth to a 5lb. baby. God Blessed them both with good health. Especially since she partied the whole time. Allot of Miller Lite ran through that babies veins.

When you climbed the tree to get your switch, did you have to go back and get another one because the one you picked was too small?
No but once I fell out of the willow tree (it was huge and those little thin branches were like whips) and they took me to the emergency room to get checked out...the whole way to the hospital, my dad was yelling that I could have picked one from a lower branch!!! Needless to say, I didn't actually get the spanking that time....and it was just for breaking a dish for crying out loud.

I just can't imagine not having ANY clue! Regardless of apprearance, there are changes within the body that tell you loud and clear. Ya know monthly "visitor", morning sickness, baby MOVEMENT, and the list goes on...
Good grief, my stomach looked like I was auditioning for Aliens and something could burst outta there at any moment when I was preggo with mine. Babies move around and the get hiccups and shift... what did she think all that was?? idigestion?

We didn't have the willow trees, we had something else. Anyway, we thought we were being smart by getting the smallest switch we could find. Come to find out those burned the worst!! Thankfully my mom wasn't picky.. she whooped me with whatever was handy. Anyone remember a hairbrush, shoe, wooden spoon, ping pong paddle, etc?? hehehe... I was a pretty uh, er, active child and usually into something I wasn't 'posed to be. :D

All women are different. My friend's baby was a preemie and unfortunately probably sleeping it off most of the time. Remember when you are young, you tend to ignore when your body is trying to tell you something. You don't have time to slow down and pay attention.
Not all women have the sickness and crap that people know about. Like I said, all of us are different.

03-09-2006, 07:14 PM
I have to agree with that. Women are more likely to ignore symptoms of lots of things and just mark it up to hormones, diet, lack of exercise, etc... My mother-in-law is about to have hernia surgery. She has not one but two severe hernia's. She didn't really know that her innards were poking through her torn abdominal wall. She just thought she was putting on weight and her age was catching up to her. So, we tend to ignore what we just don't have time to take care of. I know I do.

as you said, especially a 13 year old. How many 13 year olds do you know that know allot about being pregnant. Not many I hope. Most wouldn't have a clue I think. But I think it is funny how all of you males keep saying "how would a girl not know." Till you have been through it, I guess it would be hard to understand.

I don't know how to explain how a girl doesn't know that she is pregnant. I agree with you Miss Kitty you don't know until you have been through it. I don't know what goes on because I am not a girl. But I know that you do Miss Kitty.

The oldest is uncoordinated and the youngest is athletic and that's proof enough that it's not how you start, but how you finish. My dad was born 3 months early and weighed 3 pounds, but he's like 260 now.

That's okay Miss Kitty. I have mangaged to overcome the odds at many occasions. I had a 5% chance of living and beat those odds and then when I had my hip surgery after the doctors broke them and screwed plates in my hips and said I had to be in a cast for 4 weeks and a wheelchair for 2 more weeks, well I beat those odds as well.

Some people don't stick out very far because people gain varying amounts of weight. It also might not be as apparent for a heavier person.
