I have seen a lot of high school football and do not understand the lack of "special packages" put in for specific games. I know coaches spend a lot of time installing their offenses(spring, two a days, etc) and tweak them based on that weeks opponent, but what if...teams were to put in a 6-8 play package completely different from what their opponent has seen on film or is expecting. For example, New Braunfels runs a spread offense out of the gun exclusively. Why not come out this week against Westlake on the first drive and go option or out of the eye...they have the oline and backs...just curious if any of you guys have seen examples of this or am I just way off base?

Some teams do that. I know Katy has a small spread playbook that no one ever see's coming.

I just want to see someone come out in an old school flexbone, wing t, or lonesome polecat offense for 1 serious just to confuse the hell out of the defense.

Surprise misdirection ftw

It is hard enough for most teams just to get their base stuff down on offense. Most teams will have a few surprise wrinkles, but those are not usually meant to be executed in one series.

The defenses usually get to have the fun with surprises.

do you think it is a lack of confidence in mental capacity or too much confidence (in some but not all cases) in what they have taught up to that point?

I think wrinkles could be intergraded into base offenses but the coaches and kids have a limited time to practice during the week. Getting these 15-18 yo kids focused and motivated is hard enough for coaches. Execution of their own offense on a week to week basis is challenging. Good topic!

Most high school playbooks are pretty stout so they can certainly use that offense and maybe change some sets to create mismatches.

What I find amazing is on the defense side of the ball. Everyone is so hell bent on their base set.
I still think the best way to slow down Trinity is with a 4-4, stunt your front 4 make those big bodies reach block, much too difficult to zone block as no one is straight up. Your O line can step one way and someone is still uncovered. However you better have two studs in the middle because Trinity is going to pound you between the guards. I am not saying it is going to work the whole game but it is a difficult D to run on. Have to have great O line play. You are susceptible to the pass. JMO, sometimes old school can still work. Look at the undersized colleges going to the triple option and being competitive.

It all depends on how long your system has been in place. Once your players have the system down, then you can expand into it. A lot of the spread offenses use the old Wing T as a base, so a team that bases their spread out of that would be able to go under center and go to 2 backs 2 TE and a SE real easy. That would really confuse the opposing defense.
As far as Trinity goes, I think you are right go to a 4-4, if you can stop them for 2-3 series and then score a couple of TD's and get a lead, you will get them out of their game and have a good shot at an upset.

Many have tried, few have succeeded. Most teams already put 10 in the box. This years defense is Trinity's best ever. Good luck with "a couple of TD's".

Never said it would succeed over the long haul but you have to make an attempt and it could cause some confusion that is all.
