Hey Dragon nation,

what's up with the cheerleader deal this year? I didn't go find the link, but the KTCK Ticket dudes were debating this issue tonight. Apparently 14 ladies "passed all tests" to make the squad (tumbling, cheering, etc.) and the other slots were simply left wanting - girls didn't make the cut I suppose. So, they simply let the girls that tried out, but didn't make it, on the squad? Some parents are irate, some think it's cool. So, what's the deal?

this has been an ongoing issue/point of conflict for several years. lots of heartburn with the selection and eligibility standards. very contentious, almost to the point of law suits and punches. dr presley(hs principal) keeps his head on a swivel and wishes it would go away. it won't. glad the football program is more stable.

its basically (from what i read) 14 girls made it, and the judging is no fair, and all that stuff..so they want to 2 diffrent cheer teams, but the school doesnt want to pay the 6k for a competive coach, but their open to letting the studens and families raise/donate money for it, which i guess people dont want to do that either....thats all i really know

The truth to this whole fiasco may never get told. Let me just say that it is unfortunate that some parents are teaching their kids how not to behave as mature adults. I don't have kids involved in this but I am too close to it to say anything that may implicate certain individuals. I just hope justice prevails.

My daughter is a cheerleader at Judson, and i know it happens every where usa.Theres always a few mothers that just keep crap going. They get coaches fired, they start false acusations etc, etc, etc! It`s gonna be interesting this year because the superintendents(spelling)daughter made the squad.Cheerleading is`nt a uil sanctioned program,so all kinds junk can happen.

Actually its the opposite. Some are too rich and feel their status entitles them to have their way. If things don't go your way you just make all kind of threats right?

They are a group of students that wear coveralls, and run around on the sideline promoting "fan interaction" ..they do a pushp for every total point scored after touchdowns and xtra point.with Carroll they do a lot of pushups! They are just informally trying to ge the fans more involved.

I'll probably get blasted by a cheerleader defender, but ours don't have alot of effect on the crowd..they just stand around a lot and pose....I know they train a lot & all are very gymnastically capable, they just don't have much interaction with the crowd..

In a big time football venue - the cheerleaders are pretty much a non-event for those at the game. In Lufkin, all cheers such as "LP" or "go Pack" or whatever - are started in the stands. the CL's are for carrrying flags, doing stunts just to keep energy high and for overall atmosphere. I do like the Crew - although I want to come down there and do a mosh pit, crowd-surf jump on you when you start those dang push-ups.:D

heaven forbid anyone ask me. you have to do some pushups, and a skit at the tryouts. 5 guys, 5 girls make it. obviously to have a good skit, you gotta be funny, so i guess that is a qualification. as long as you have an 85 GPA and maintain above 75 in all classes while you're on it, that's how it goes for grades...not difficult.

and basically you have to be awesome...like me

Hey, SLCers! This cheerleader story has made it to the radio talk shows here in Houston!

Yea, it's gotten way too much exposure. Looks like it has somewhat been resolved. The original 14 that made the cut get to stay. Those that did not must try out again if they so choose. It sounds like some may not try out again and it will be the same criteria to make as it was the first time so even if they do tryout they will have to do better than the first go around if they are to be chosen. All we are waiting on now are the lawsuits to come rolling in. I gaurantee that will happen.

Do ya'll remember that lady from I believe Kingwood that paid to have a cheerleader killed so her daughter could make the squad? I think that beats the SLC fiasco.

gwdaddy
03-09-2006, 08:53 AM
Now don't be implicating Kingwood in this, Mr. Tiger. That cheerleader mom business was out in Channelview, according to the following story. We lived in Houston at that time and it was indeed all the news. We later lived in Kingwood before moving to Dragonland, but I didn't remember that the cheerleader mom took a job there after she got out of jail--maybe that was the Kingwood tie in that you recall.

From what I remember back in the late 80s and early 90s, the schools in Kingwood's old Northeast district were better known for obtaining injunctions to horn their way into the football playoffs when they didn't get there on the playing field--investigators seemed to be able to find ineligible players behind every tree out that way when it served their teams' purpose.

'Cheerleader mom' freed after serving six months

By MICHELLE KOIDIN Associated Press Writer

HOUSTON (AP) - Wanda Holloway, jailed for trying to hire a hit man to kill the mother of her daughter's cheerleading rival, was freed this morning.

Ms. Holloway had served six months of a 10-year sentence after pleading no contest to solicitation of capital murder. She will be on probation for the next 9-1/2 years.

Ms. Holloway - the so-called "cheerleader mom" whose saga drew international publicity and led to two television movies - initially was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1991. That conviction was overturned when it was discovered a juror was on probation.

Ms. Holloway did not answer questions while leaving the courtroom this morning.

During the hearing, State District Judge George Godwin denied prosecutors' request to send Ms. Holloway to a mental hospital. He instead ordered her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Godwin said he would re-evaluate the terms of her probation after the test.

"Until we know a doctor has said she is over this obsession, no, we do not feel comfortable," said Verna Heath, the target of the alleged plot.

However, Mrs. Heath added, "I don't intend on spending the rest of my life scared."

Godwin also ordered Ms. Holloway to perform 1,000 hours of community service. He recommended she spend it in a homeless shelter.

During her half-year at the state prison in Gatesville she was assigned to the hoe detail, clearing weeds from sides of highways.

Defense attorney Jack Zimmermann said Ms. Holloway already has lined up a job as a secretary at a small business in Kingwood, which is across Houston from Channelview, where the events unfolded.

Zimmermann said his client does not plan to cash in on her notoriety, adding no book or movie deals are in the works.

"She's not going to do any interviews for compensation," Zimmermann said.

Jurors in the 1991 trial heard secretly recorded tapes of Ms. Holloway asking her brother-in-law to hire a hit man to kill the mother of a girl who was vying against her daughter for a spot on the cheerleading squad.

Ms. Holloway said she wanted the mother killed because she believed that the daughter would be so upset that she would drop out of the competition.

Witnesses at the original trial described Ms. Holloway as a vindictive mother who was overzealous in pursuing her daughter's dreams. Both girls were 13 at the time.

The case was spoofed in the HBO movie "The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom," which starred actress Holly Hunter as Ms. Holloway. A second made-for-TV movie, "Willing to Kill: the Texas Cheerleader Story," aired on ABC in 1992.
