Any boxing fans out there? well I enjoy watching the sport... and am an avid boxing fan..so ill will officially start this Boxing Thread..........
Did any of you see that Calcazaghe(sp?) vs Jeff Lacy fight the other night?
I thought for sure Left Hook lacy would punish Calazaghe but it went the other way. I did not see the fight so was wondering if any of you boxing fans did so you can fill me in on what happened. I guess the 168lb division is owned now by the brit..... a division historically ruled by american fighters....
joe C.. is now calling out Tarver and Jones.... now that he put the hurt on Lacy.. whom i thought was one of the best up and coming american fighters.... what do you think? dada? any thoughts?
what about the third fight between Pacquiau and Morales? which way does it go?
Does butterball james toney beat hasim rahman on March 18?? Toney has excellent conditioning and boxing skills for a round guy....
What about jermain Taylor vs Calazaghe? I think taylor needs a few more big fights.... and besides.. calazaghe does not fight on american soil... only in england...
what about the resurgence of ike quartey? I think he gives taylor a run for his money....
the wild card.. Winky Wright.... hes too good but too boring for his own good.... a guy no one wants to fight .. styles make fights.. and no one looks good against winky.... Winky vs Taylor... bad fight for taylor....
is roy jones done? or does he still have a future at 168?
what do you think about miguel cotto? i think chop chop corley really exposed him..and if that fight would have been anywhere else but cottos hometown in puerto rico.. i think it would be different....
what about the super bout mayweather vs Super zab judah...this fight could get explosive... zab is one of the few fighters.. if not the only fighter who can match pretty boy floyds speed... i give floyd the edge i think his boxing ability is great.. but what we havent seen is how floyed reacts when he gets hit by a true 147 lb left hook on the chin..... and zab could be the fighter quick enough and powerful enough to do it....
ok.. enough of my boxing ramblings.... any of you boxing fans...let me know what you think.....

FINALLY...I love boxing...I have a boxing group on Yahoo.
I admit I was wrong about Calzaghe...no wonder Roy avoided him all these years. I thought he was an overprotected European bum...Guy has skills, but he's at the twilight of his career. He would beat the crap out of Jones and Tarver...I thought Lacy would KO him EASILY...guess I was wrong. Joe could retire undefeated now.
Morales needs to stay away from pac-man...that guy is a beast
Taylor-Calzaghe will never happen..HBO vs. Showtime fighter..Taylor will want the fight in Arkansas and Calzage will want it across the pond.
Ike is done....just looking for a payday..I think he had a fight coming up with Vernon Forrest, but Forrest hurt his shoulder training.
Roy Jones is done...should go into business with Hopkins and de la hoya
Cotto is over rated IMO...Chop-Chop and Torres exposed him...so did feather fisted Branco saturday...the guy can not protect against the right hand and can not handle a guy with speed. If Branco gave him trouble...imagine what Floyd would do. Putting him in with Hatton or mayweather now would ruin him. Malanggi, the guy he's fighting next is flashy, but no power
Zab's defense is suspect. Both will be facing the fastest fighter they've ever faced so speed will be neutrlized. Zab looked HORRIBLE in his last fight...if that Zab shows up Floyd will toy with him like he did Gatti...if the Zab that beat spinks shows up...this will be a great fight.
KT, can we have a "Boxing/UFC" thread under "others"? This is probably the only sport that I follow more than High school football.

ditto....:D
im into boxing as well but more into the middle and lightwieghts..the heavywieghts have just gotten to boring for me with no real exceptional fighter..IMO..
my fav boxer of all time is Julio Cesar Chavez....
right now im waiting for the De la Hoya vs Mayorga fight...dont like either fighter but Mayorga is making things real complicated for DLH..he has talked trash and has insulted DLHs family and called him a queer..he even slapped him in the back of the head demanding DLH respect...
the last person to do that to DLH was Vargas and we saw what DLH did to him...i dont like talkers so thats why im hoping DLH knocks him down..DLH is on his last fights though..

Mayorga is taylor made for Oscar, IF Oscar can make weight...Mayoraga does that to EVERYONE he fights.

I agree that the Zab that shows up to face floyd will be the key... but I think zab knows what hes up against and will train and focus accordingly.. he knows if hes not 100%, he will get toyed with... I think this will be a barnburner and it wont go 12 rounds....
I dont think Tarver will lose to calzaghe I think it would be a good fight.. location would be a big factor..
I think morales can beat pacquiau.. but it will take a hell of an effort....
and im in agreement with cotto... i think hes too slow and methodical.. which makes him super predictable... hatton would punish him.. and floyd would knock him out.....
I think DLH beats mayorga.. but i dont think it will be as easy as ppl may think... oscar shys away from fighters who can punch.. and goes on the defensive too much.... however.... if he comes to fight.. then mayorga is done... but if mayorga lands that big right hand... watch out.....
Quartey looking for a payday? nah... i think hes formidable for any of the 154 pounders....
who is the best up and coming american fighter out there? whos going to carry the states? Taylor, floyd.... who else?
when the Morales and Pac man II aired i wasnt to sure who to go with...i picked Morales in the first one and won..before the 2nd fight i watched both fighters in past fights and I also saw how morales was the same fighter and hadnt changed much since the first fight while Pac man was jus hungry and developed a power punch and more speed...i picked Pac man about 2 hrs before the fight..bet $200 for him to win and went double if it was by knocked down..i went home with $400 that night...
if a 3rd fight was to happen..and I strongly feel that it will...it should make for a very intresting fight..

I'm not too impressed with Tarver...his claim to fame is beating an OLD Roy Jones...sure they are the same age, but Roy had like 30+ fights before Tarver turned pro. Calzaghe showed LOTS of speed, and power...footwork wasnt too bad either. To tell the truth I cant think of anyone from 160-175 beating him right now. I though Lacy was the next big thing and he played with him.
Pac-man has LOT of energy...You have to fight the PERFECT fight to beat him
Yeah..if Oscar makes weight he will have no trouble with Mayorga...his come at you style is perfect for Oscar...Oscar wont stop him, but he beats him easily.
Cotto will eventually move up to try to avoid all the top guys at 140..
I dont know who will carry the torch for the US now...if you would have asked me friday I would have said "Jeff Lacy"....but now, I don't know.

thats what i said as well... i thought lacy had all the tools to punish everyone in front of him......but like you said.. now.. I dont know...
what did you think about that mosely vs vargas fight? moselys power did not move up with him... he was getting pushed around.. his punches where fast and to the point.... but with no power behind them.... mosely says he wants to fight the winner of the mayweather and judah fight..... i think he beats cotto if he moves up.....
Tarver is good.. but i dont think hes as great as he thinks he is.. but he is still a solid fighter....
who wins the taylor- Wright fight? i think its a bad fight for Taylor.... and a good fight for Wright.... i dont think taylor is seasoned enough for winky....
we still have acelino freitas vs zahir raheem..... that should be a good one...
and we have tarver vs hopkins in june..... that will be an interesting one as well.....

Mosley hasnt had a KO since 2003 I think...lol...His speed was too much for vargas. I wish they would have went the distance, it was a close fight...but if that eye would have split open...OMG. Mosley SAYS he is moving down, but there is too much money in a rematch with Vargas. I think he's faster than Zab and could be a bigger thread to floyd...especially if his power is back when he drops down...Any body in the top 5 with a right hand beats Cotto right now...look at all of his post fights interviews...he looks like the loser against hand picked guys with no power.
Taylor-wright would be the most boring fight ever...lol they would just follow each other around. I still dont know what to say about Taylor...he could very easily have two loses to Hopkins. Wright looked good against a smaller Mosley and a one dimensional Trinidad....I really don't know who I would pick IF that fight happened.
Acelino "PoPo" Freitas and Zhair Raheem will be a good one, I think Corrales took alot out of Popo...i wathced Raheem get robbed here in Houston to Rocky Juarez. I'll go with Raheem in this one.

ima a fan of fighting wrestling and stuff.
i dont know about mosely..some of the things he does look questionable..he head bunts a lot but does it very well..and he also does get away with a lot of punches to the back of the head..he is crazy fast and packs a good punch..but against vargas late in the rounds...Vargas was landing good punches but that eye just looked horrible..i would of loved to have seen that fight go the distance as well..

Hell yeah I am a big boxing fan myself. Here are some of my predictions.
I think Mayweather will destroy Zab Judah, Judah's chin is weak & Mayweather is the best fighter in the world now.
Mayorga/De La Hoy: I think Mayorga could take him Oscar is past his prime & this is a dangerous fight for him.
Wright/Taylor: Taylor wins in a decision, this will be Wright's first big fight with a Middleweight & Wright needed one more fight before Taylor.
Calzaghe: I don't know yet he needs to get into American soil to fight.
Ricky Hatton or Miguel Cotto will give Mayweather a good fight(Mayweather wins them both). When Mayweather trains hard & is focused he is invinceable.

The head butts are a result of him Jumping in with his punches....speed is amazing...but lacks power at 154.

I'm with you on the Floyd-Zab fight...it will be entertaining.
Oscar will box Mayorga's ears off.
Still not sure Taylor-Wright is gonna happen...but their styles seem to make me think this fight will be boring.
Calzage..I said the same thing about him, but he seems to be the real deal
Cotto will be retired if he fights Mayweather...Hatton would be a good match up.

wow, I don't know all the fighters like y'all do, but...
I remember watching WW of Sports on ABC in the 70's as a kid and watching Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, and Leon Spinks. I remember the early 80's with SugarRay Leonard and the HitMan Hearns and Marvelous Marvin Hagler and NO Mas Roberto Duran. We got revved up for these fights just like a big Cowboys game and my whole family would watch. Then came PPV...
Tyson, DeLaHoya, and Chavez in the 90's was big, but PPV ruined boxing for me. It is such a gamble of whether you're going to get a great fight or not. Remember Tyson/ Holyfield. It was off to a great start, and little Mikey decides to take a bite out of crime! I was so pissed! I hope my other beloved sports don't ever go through this.
Honestly, now, if I want to see great fights, I watch UFC. Those are some tough SOB's.

PPV has ruined boxing. The fan following is already falling off and they make us pay for crappy fights. UFC was frowned upon when it first came out...now they put it on network TV for everyone to see that it is indeed a sport and the following is growing like crazy. Boxing should do the same thing. Also I think boxing needs one governing body.

Me and a buddy went to the Compaq Center (Summit then) to watch a closed circuit viewing of the Hearns/Hagler fight. That was the best 3 rounds ever. I think it only went 3 rounds. My most vivid memory of that bout was that the two boxers came out in the first round toe to toe and slugged it out like an amateur bout. Even though it was being viewed in Houston on a big screen, the entire Compaq Center erupted and gave the boxers a standing ovation after the first round.

The only cool part was the training during the week.Ali trained in the astrohall and some of his workouts were open to the public for free...a young George Foreman came by one day & he & Ali had a fake rumble...They were both pretty chisled athletic figures back in the day

Ali is 6'4" and at that time weighed about 220. He had probably no more than a 34" waist which made his shoulders look 8' wide! I bet his body fat was under 10%....Long arms, which enabled him to dance around like he did & "sting like a bee"

I think 6'4" was being generous. Back then all the HW's were actually in shape. Today's HW are just big guys who couldnt make it at other sports and are looking for easy money or fighters who used to be Middleweights and didnt want to train anymore.

 Ok boxing guru's
fights in the works or recenty signed.... let me know your thoughts...
Roy Jones jr vs Joe Calazaghe
I think this is a good fight for roy....Roy has always been one of my favorite fighters of all time.. however... hes slowed big time .. hes not 26 anymore... hes up there in years.... and has not looked good in his past 4 fights.... Calazaghe coming off a big win over the in my opinion.. hier apparent american middle weight jeff left hook lacy... now joe is confident in taking on the best the americans have to offer.... 5 years ago... roy takes out joe with ease in a unanimous decision on US soil....but now.. in june... roy will have to go over seas to england to fight thier favorite son..... I think its a good fight for roy... a big name that has no power.... just a busy fighter.. i think roy can take more chances and let his hands fly again... preferrably that lethal left hook.... however.. joe is good, very busy and very well conditioned... so it could go either way... however.. im gonna go with roy... to win a split decision.. yes.. in england....
Mosely vs vargas II
Was it just me or was mosely being pushed around way too much in the first fight.... mosely has no power at this weight, but stays busy... however.. vargars now knows he cant be hurt by mosely.. and will come forward and try to overpower mosely.. how mosely handles this is the big question...However... i think mosely wins via decision because hes the busier fighter and lands the cleaner punches at will.....
Antonio Tarver vs Bernard Hopkins
I think B-Hop does well against Tarver, but can he take tarvers left hand? that will be the question... I think its a good fight for B-Hop and a big gamble for the Magic man tarver.... I see this one going the distance, I dont see hopkins having enough firepower to put a full fledged light heavyweight on the canvas via KO...but you never know, the extra pounds might help the executioner...
Zab super judah vs Floyd mayweather
I think floyd retains the mythical pound for pound #1 ranking but has a tough time with judah... judah is bigger, has the speed to match, but floyd had the advantage in power and skill... a unanimous decision by floyd.
what do you guys think???

what do you guys think???
Roy Jones is turning into Mike Tyson...he should give it up. He hasnt been the same since he moved up to HW....you football guys should know that. Roy's body fat % has always been low, so when he came back from Heavyweight...he was losing muscle...not healthy, especially at his age. I'm with you, 5 years ago this is a easy fight for Roy. He has always relied on his speed, now that his speed and reflexes are gone, we've noticed that the chin is glassy. Too be honest, I'm not sure what to think of this fight, it would be wise for him to take a tune-up and get his confidence back...the only posituve thing I see is that Joe is a southpaw....Jones has LOTS of experinces(good and bad) with lefties....I dont see him getting a dec. overseas. I actually think Joe COULD outwork him.
Mosley Vargas II....the reason you posted will be the reason Vargas looses. His pride and confidence will beat him. He KNOWS Mosley can't hurt him so he will try to force his will on Shane....follow him around all night looking for the big shot...eating quick combos as he stalks. Shane by dec.
Tarver vs. Hopkins should be like In WWE when they have "Looser retires match" I'm not watching this fight...HBO will have Cotto-Malanaggi the same night. If you thought Hopkins-Taylor was boring...the crowd will boo all night. Two counter punchers.....waiting on each other to throw a punch. I'll go with Hopkins..I dont think Tarver is as busy as Taylor was.
If the Zab that beat Corey Spinks shows up....this will be a war. Zab has the power advantage...but Mayweathers speed and DEFENSE isnt something you can prepare for...I think he will stop Zab...you hit zab on the button and his legs go by-by. Cant wait for this one.
Also....a word to the wise...unless a contract is SIGNED...don't believe anything out of Roy Jones' mouth. He likes to keep his name in the media..

I think Roy's handspeed has held up OK, it's his defensive speed that has diminished..he can't dance away from the punches like he used to. The problem is he thinks he still can...I think Vargas will impose his will on Mosely, and win...Tarver & Hopkins? wake me up when it's over....Mayweather wins again

I agree that roys move back down from heavyweight ended his career... he was on top of his game..and he was never the same.. then getting knocked out by tarver on one punch was the nail in the coffin.... However, roy still has good skill.. i just think his age is catching up to him.... and he cant rely just on his speed anymore.. he has to be like everyone else now.. and take a punch.. dig deep... and out work people... and thats not the roy we saw for the past 15 years.... hes not fighting his fights... hes trying to be someone hes not.... I think he has a chance against calcazaghe.... but i think he should just gain 20lbs.. and end his career as a heavyweight....
do you think judah has the power to knock mayweather out?
I think tarver-hopkins will be a lot more entertaining that people may think......

IMO, a lot of people have the power to knock Mayweather out..can they catch him is the question...I don't see anyone out there right now who can...I felt for long time Roy was the best # for #..I don' think so anymore..age is a *****!

Roy was always the best athlete in boxing....his defense WAS his speed...no speed= no defense. All you have to do is pressure him like Glen Johnson and Tarver did.
Judah is naturally the bigger guy so he is the bigger puncher...but I can only remember Floyd getting caught by two clean punches....Against Emanuel Burton-Augustus and Chop-Chop. When Floyd is ON his game...wow. But Zab is no sloch when he's on his game. I think his chin will betray him again.
Tarver-Hopkins.....I'd rather watch John Ruiz fight.

Shane is too fast for Vargas and has just ENOUGH power to make Fernando respect him. What does Vargas have from the first fight to improve on? I don't think Shane will allow himself to get in a position to let Vargas use his weight. Vargas had the potential to be an all time great, but TOO many wars too soon has taken a lot out of him. Trinidad ruined him....
I think we should Lobby with KT to put "Boxing" up under the "Others" threads. I love this sport, but right now it has a bad name. Maybe I can help draw the casual fan in and show them that Mike Tyson is not what boxing is all about.....:D Or maybe a "Combat sports" thread to include Boxing, Kick-boxing, K-1, UFC, Pride and other MMA's(mixed martial arts)

Rahman should have used his size more. At the begining or round one he came out slumped down to Toney's size...all he had to do was jab and keep Toney away, Toney is a counterpuncher. I just dont think most heavyweights are used to a guy with that much movement....even a butterball Toney moves better than most of the big guys....I thought Rachman did enough for the win.....now we have to suffer through this fight again.
I am SO ready for Mayweather-Judah. Anyone in Houston having a fight party or watching at a sportsbar?

I think because of this they will both lose a certain percentage of composure in the ring. The question is will it balance out. Because of this, I think it will come to quicker end.

Kitty is a boxing fan...watch out Lonny..I might make my move.
That is true...but the reason I think floyd wins is because at times Zab isnt focused or dosent train while Floyd hasnt showed a lack of discipline yet...I havent seen anything from him to say he's gonna lose. He's a professional in the ring...no matter who he's fighting.

Well My sister & I split the pot from where we watched the fight, but I enjoyed it Mayweather was clearly the better fighter & definitely outclassed him.
Now on Zab Judah that is a classless POS right there he was losing then you low blow the man & then hitting him in the back of the head(gutless there).
Roger Mayweather's stunt was pure stupidity that didn't need to happen like that. He should have been more professional than that.

judah landed a few solid shots at the beginning of the fight... and i think that got mayweathers attention.... which is why we didnt see the explosive mayweather that we saw with gatti...judah just could not keep up that pace.... floyd kept the pace.. and peppered him with round winning shots... and thats what made the difference...

Yeah he did well and could have knocked barrera out if he was more aggressive. My beef is that how can 2 judges give the final round to Rocky and 20 minutes later...change the scorecards making the rounds even to give barrera the win. That just seems fishy. Barrera is promoted by De la Hoya and they were looking for a mega fight with Pacquio.....I guess they didnt want rocky to mess that up.

That's the only way Floyd loses IMO...he moves up too much and is beat by a bigger fighter...I think Winky would be too strong for him....Baldomir and Mayweather both made weight at 147....the next dat Baldomir was 169....which means he probably walks around at 180....Floyd only went up 2 pounds in 24 hours which means...he probably walks around at 150 or 155....Winky is just too big. Oscar and Mosley are afraid...at this point in their careers an embarassing loss to Floyd would ruin their careers.

Oscar is a good fighter, but he's overrated, IMO. Every great fighter usually has about 10 fights that make him legendary. Out of those 10 fights, he has about 2 or 3 opponents that are - themselves - considered the best of that particular era. In this era, Trinidad, Hopkins and Mosley are Oscar's "Big 3" opponents....
He lost to Trinidad.
Was knocked out by Hopkins.
And lost, TWICE, to Mosley.
As much as people build up his legacy, I haven't seen him beat a great fighter, or any fighter who was a pre-fight favorite. Ali fought Foreman when everyone in the world KNEW Foreman would destroy Ali. Maybe even hurt him so bad, he could never physically fight again. They were wrong.;)
I'm a huge Mayweather fan, but he needs to fight...Cory Spinks, Oscar De La Hoya and either Winky or Jermain Taylor - or both. And he needs to win, at least, 3 of those fights.
Ali had Frazier, Foreman, Norton Sr., Patterson and Liston.
Leonard had Hagler, Hearns and Duran.
You've got to beat the best, to be the best.

I agree with you on Oscar....He lost to the best 3 fighters he faced and you can say he lost to Pernell Whittaker also.
Spinks is too easy of a fight and Taylor is a full-blown Middleweight so that is a total mismatch. Those guys may not be as skilled, but way too big for Floyd.
These fights would make sense for floyd right now...you can look these guys up at Boxrec.com to check out their resumes.
1. Ricky Hatton
2. Miquel Cotto
3. Antonio Margarito
4. Paul Williams
5. Kermit Cintron

All of these are top level fighters....that Mayweather can beat.
I'm very familiar with all of these guys. I think Paul Williams will become the next Thomas "The Hit Man" Hearns, as I've seen him fight 3 or 4 times, now....and the Sky's the limit. (I'm looking forward to a Paul Williams vs Taylor/Winky fight....someday.) He looks like a photo copy of Hearns, except a little more muscle. Cotto, Hatton and Margarito would be good options for Mayweather. Cintron would lose, no doubt.
Taylor beat Hopkins (twice) and we all know Hopkins knocked out De La Hoya. My opinion would be that Taylor probably walks around at 165, but could drop below 160 for a bout with Mayweather. Mayweather walks around at about 150, so I think adding 5 to 7 lbs is possible. Will he tire quickly, would be the question. He displays alot of movement in the ring, so the added weight may tire him easier. But the payday would be there.
I think a Spinks, Oscar or Winky fight is forseeable. Taylor would be hopeful, at best, probably.
What would be awesome is if he could face, Margarito, Oscar, Winky, Hatton and maybe even a....Mosley and/or Trinidad fight. If he could beat all of these opponents I'd have no problem calling him the pound-for-pound Top 5 to have ever boxed.
And yes...I did say Trinidad! (He's already talking about coming out of his second retirement and fighting Oscar again.) LOL! :D :p

Taylor is a BIG MW...I wouldnt be suprised if he walked around close to 200....he has the frame for it. 160 for Mayweather is SUICIDE. Hopkins-De la Hoya was at a catch weight with De la Hoya moving WAY up....we saw the results....Floyd is smarter than that...Oscar wanted the money. I actually think 147 is too much weight for mayweather...he did seem a bit slower...135-140....nobody comes close....I don't think he should go up to 154. A spinks fight really makes no sense after Judah beat Spinks down and Floyd beat the hell out of Judah...that would be a step back. Hatton, Cotto and Paul Williams....YES...that is HEARNS ALL OVER....a 6-1 welterweight...his size alone would cause problems for ANYONE...he can fight anywere from 147-168...a beast.

You know what the problem is? I just don't think there's anyone that could really challenge Mayweather. I don't. I think the best fighters are fighting at 155/160 on up to 180. I think Oscar and Mayweather makes sense. And yes, Taylor IS pretty thick. Mayweather would have to do some serious eluding...of which he does well, but I can visualize your point.
Only reason I mentioned Spinks is because it'd be just another belt. (IBF Jr. MW) Paul Williams - and that beautiful arm-reach - would pose problems for a shorter, smaller Mayweather. I'd pay to see it, though.
And what the hell is Mayweather thinking "I want to retire, after my next fight!". C'mon bro, don't pull a Jim Brown or Barry Sanders on us. Your *** is only 29...it's not like you're Roy Jones Jr. - 38 yrs old -, and you've just figured out that many people don't see your "great wins" to be THAT great. (< 100 yrs ago, he beat Bernard - before Bernard was "BERNARD", beat Toney - which isn't saying much IMO, beat Griffin - joke, beat Tarver - bigger joke...as we all know Hopkins exposed Tarver, beat a tired and worn down 35 yr old Virgil Hill, eluded a slower/overrated joke named John Ruiz and was humiliated by some guy named Glenncofe "Glenn" Johnson.) Did I miss anyone? Roy is a favorite of mine, and I admire/admired his skills. But he's another Oscar De La Hoya, IMO. I guess he fought who they put in front of him.;)
Mayweather, you've still got plenty of time to become a legend.
I want to see 10 more good fights (5 of those being all-time classics), then he can walk away, making me - and probably everyone else - believe he's THE all-time great.

EXACTLY.....Jones was one of the worst BOXERS ever...what I mean by that is that his technique and his defense was AWFUL....he was just so much faster than everyone that he got away with it....he relied on his speed too much and once he slowed down....he got expsosed...by the way...he has a PPV coming up. He didnt fight who THEY put in front of him...HBO gave him a contract allowing him to choose who he faught.
Yeah Floyd still has some years in him.....I would LOVE to see he and Paul Williams go at it...while Paul is still green...he could cause problems later on.

However, he wouldn't have beaten a Prime Bernard Hopkins. Hell, a Prime Jermain Taylor wouldn't have beaten a Prime Bernard Hopkins.

hopkins couldnt deal with the speed when they were both young guns.. and he wouldnt have been able to hang with his speed in roys prime as well... only time bhop beats jones is.. now.. after jones speed is gone.. because ill agree.. jones's speed was the reason he was so good.. whereas hopkins is a sound boxer.. but with jones's speed in his prime.. and what boxing skill he does have .. would have offset bhop yet again....

Bernard beat noticeable/solid opponents in...
Oscar De La Hoya
Felix Trinidad
Antonio Tarver
Glenn Johnson (of whom beat Roy Jones Jr.)
William Joppy
Antwun Echols
and defended his title 20 consecutive times. He fought an avg of 2 times year, since losing to Roy Jones Jr. in a 12-Rnd Decision, and never lost a fight...in 12 yrs.
too playa...you my dawg....but Bernard Hopkins in 2002 was nowhere near the Bernard Hopkins of 1993 - when Roy beat'em. And Roy Jones Jr. knew it then, and knows it now.
Coming from a Jones fan......Hopkins would beat the brakes off of Jones now. Jones' downfall was moving up to heavyweight. All of you gym rats KNOW that Jones had little if any body fat....it was easy for him to put on weight and go up to Heavyweight....PLUS if you remember at the weigh in....they allowed him to weigh in FULLY DRESSED while most boxer strip naked trying to shed as much weight as possible. Now....Losing weight to come back down to Light-Heavyweight was the Killer....he had no "Weight" to loose....he was dehydrated and losing muscle.....that's what Killed him.....No way Tarver is on Jones' level...but he beat him Twice...so did Glen Johnson.
and a prime roy jones would have beaten hopkins again, de la hoya, winky wright and jermain taylor:eek:
I doubt that too playa......I think Hopkins would be too Skilled and defensive for Jones. Jones relied ENTIRELY on his speed and counter punching....Hopkins is one of the smartest fighters in the game.

I'm a huge fan of his skills. I, for years, had to defend him against those who questioned his attitude and such. I'm only questioning his place in history. Just as I would question Oscar's. And I beleive Bernard was better in his later years, than he was in his earlier years, just as Roy was better in his earlier yrs than in his later yrs.
I believe a Roy Jones Jr. vs Bernard Hopkins fight would be the perfect ending to both of their careers. However, I feel Bernard would be the victor.
But, don't doubt that I enjoyed his antics and pure speed/tactition in the ring. I just wish his opponents would have been greater, in skill. (Aside from Bernard...13 yrs ago.)

I think, once Floyd fights a few legendary bouts/classics he should go ahead and retire. (Not going past 35.) Fighters lose their power, last, which is why George Foreman and Arturo Gatti could continue at later ages. Bernard Hopkins being the best example. Floyd doesn't have trememdous power, so once his lighting speed and quick feet leave him, he'll be vulnerable. He'll then start receiving upsets, like Roy.
Nope...get those last 8 to 10 fights (of which 3 to 5 are legendary) then walk away, Floyd.

Looks like the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight will happen after all.
From Fightnews.com
Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather have reached an agreement to fight on May 5. The fight was finalized today. The bout will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. "We are not going to comment what the deal is," Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told Fightnews.com. "It's a fair deal and if the pay-per-view hits the numbers which we anticipate it will, it will be new record payday for both guys.....It's going to be big. It's clearly the biggest fight in boxing and I think it's the kind of fight which will transcend and which will clearly capture the interest of the American public and the American sports fans, because it is Mayweather pound-for-pound number one fighter in the sport against Oscar, the most popular and biggest name in the sport. Actually I was looking today at Oscar's trophy case in our office and I was standing in front of one of the belts which was a ring belt that had 'Oscar De La Hoya, pound for pound' on it, and it was 1997. So here we are ten years later and the question is, can he do it again?"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Oscar realizes this is a dangerous fight," continued Schaefer. "He realizes that he's going in as the underdog, but this is what exactly motivates him, this is what gets him going, this is what he is about and what his entire career is all about. Always going for the biggest challenges. I think that's what his active career was and that's what he'll be remembered for. The guy who always took on the biggest and the best."

10 years ago this would have been a GREAT FIGHT...but Quartey isnt the same.
Jeff Lacy....wow...hard to say...the guy is a beast, but in his last fight Joe Calzaghe made him look like boo-boo on a stick....I mean if this was Bodybuilding he would be #1......but I think the weights actually hurt him. One of the big fights in the pipeline for the coming year will be WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (34-4, 24 KOs) against undefeated mandatory challenger Paul "The Punisher" Williams (32-0, 24 KOs). "If he's the number one ranked contender, then I have to fight him next," said Margarito after his win over Joshua Clottey on Saturday night. "I don't need him to tell me I'm next," Williams stated. "I couldn't be any happier being the WBO mandatory and I am in the gym getting ready to put my punishment on him. He likes to fight and everyone knows that I'm all action in the ring. All I know is Mr. (manager/trainer George) Peterson and I will bring the title belt to South Carolina in a very exciting slugfest."

Cool, I didn't know there was a boxing thread, Williams and Margarito should be an interesting fight... personally I have seen margarito fight around 4 times and in his fight with clottey he looked slow as hell and definitely had ring rust.
Since April of 2005 he only fought once on February this year and that fight only lasted like a minute(against Gomez). Dont get me wrong Clottey had a lot to do with Tony's timing being off. I have followed Clottey's fights on HBO and he is one of the most well schooled boxers with a tight Winky Wright type of defense, and I thought we would beat margarito on points before the fight, but he broke his hand, or so they say.
I think Margarito should do a lot better with williams. Williams is explosive but can be easily hit as can Margarito. It should be a war, conditioning and heart will be the key. If somehow Margarito(very tough fight with williams could very well get knocked out) and Cotto(will fight a tough Russian named Oktay Urkal) get past their mandatories early in the year they will fight each other in June.(According to boxrec.com)

Got to go with Mayweather, as he fights with a defensive, yet offensive style. He sets up his opponent with defensive precision. His hands are cunningly placed so to allow him to deliver a quicker un-suspecting punch. His mindset is "let him throw 4 or 5 punches - quick block - at the same time, I'll throw 1 or 2 quick punches - that he doesn't see - catching him off guard and allowing me to deliver a far more destructive campaign".
Winky is a stand-in-the-middle-of-the-ring-and-let-you-tire-yourself-out type of defensive fighter. Perfect example, Trinidad. He let Trinidad attack him, yet he'd allow Felix to setup or drop is hands, then he'd attack him with the jab - afterwards quickly moving into defenisve position.
Mayweather presents a strategic defensive fight allowing him to better attack, so his style seems more offensive. Winky is pure defensive, allowing him to tire, thus frustrate his opponent. Mayweather is exciting. Winky is more long-winded.
Both fighters are excellent. I just prefer Mayweather's style.

Yeah I was just Joking I like seeing him fight too. He has a lot of skills you don't see except when he fights. What I like is how he never loses his composure.
Personally I would say I if you were to tell me if would prefer to see a boxing match or a slugging contest between two big name fighters it wouldn't really matter.
The only time I would like to see a slug out is if its between two boxers who are not that famous.
Probably of recent memory my favorite fight i would say was Hopkins(one of my favorite fighters) and Taylor 1 especially in the late round, even though Hopkins should have at least got a draw at worst IMHO.
Also when calzaghe annihilated Jeff lacy just because no one really picked calzaghe to win that fight.

Yeah he pretty much did to him the same thing Tito did to Vargas in terms of damage, but at least Vargas was in the fight. Jeff was completely out classed, and it seems that that performance pretty much destroyed the reputation and credibility he had worked hard to build. Hoping to see Calzaghe fight Taylor that would a good one or Taylor against Miranda.

Miranda is the sleeper here. He was robbed in his last fight. Yeah...Vargas was never the same after that. I think they rushed him. Tito had more Ko's than he had fights. Lacy was always one dimensional to me....relied on his power too much, but I never expected him to be dominated the way he was. I think Calzaghe would be too much for Taylor. I would have loved to see a Jones-Calzaghe fight in their primes.

I didn't see the Miranda and Abraham fight and 5 points deducted does seem like bs to me but you have to admit it takes some SERIOUS fortitude to fight with a broken jaw against a heavy handed fighter like miranda for more than half the fight.
I think calzaghe would beat taylor if they met even though he looked just O.K. against Biko He would get up for that fight, I dont know I think jones would Be able to get by calzaghe by points very close fight and hard to predict.

Miranda destroyed Willie Gibbs in one round. Gibbs isnt a slouch either(I think he is related to Hopkins)..But I like Miranda. Would love to see a rematch with Abraham. I still don't know how Taylor beat Hopkins. If Hopkins faught the way he faught Tarver I think he beats Taylor easy. Maybe making the Middleweight limit took more out of him. He seemed like he had more energy at light heavyweight. Taylor looks clumsy at times and I too think Calzaghe takes him on points.

Yeah when Hopkins fought taylor in his fights, I dont know to me he just seemed like if he was smaller than in his past fights and smaller than taylor. If he cant out muscle you he has problems I think and it was obvious taylor was giving him fits with his overall physicality. Honestly hopkins looked unbeatable when he fought against tarver he did a good job of building his body I have no doubt he would win a pretty easy decision if he fought taylor at that weight and he looked like that.

Gotta agree. I didn't think it was decisive enough in the first fight to strip Hopkins of the title, let alone the 2nd fight.
And in his last fight, Taylor didn't "unbeatable"....actually, he looked wild and sporadic.

But nothing specatular pops out at you when you see him fight. Yeah i'm looking forward to M. A. Barrera v.s. J. M. Marquez and Mosley v.s. Cintron in march then the "super fight" in may.
From what I understand margarito is gonna drop his wbo title so he doesn't have to fight williams, I guess he doesn't want to risk a fat payday against cotto in june(if he can get past his mandatory).

He is prepared to wipe out all the top 205-pounders the UFC puts before him, and blaze a path to a much desired title shot. I for one thought that Baldomir had a chance to pull off an upset against mayweather, I realized that mayweather is 100% disciplined in that fight. And has a Bernard hopkins mentality as far as pleasing the crowd, he only cares about getting the W which is smart.
So considering this is pretty boys biggest fight by far the question is will he take risks he normally wouldn't due to the magnitude of this fight or maybe to please the crowd? Considering what I have seen in the past I would say absolutely not!!
That being said this is not a good weight for mayweather and De La Hoya with his speed and boxing ability definitely has a chance to rock mayweather with a bomb and you never know.
But with all that being said I look for mayweather to win 8/12 rounds and get a unanimous decision.

Oscar has 3 controversial losses, two close fights with Mosley(mosley deserved to win the first fight) and one to Trinidad, really his only clear loss was to b-hop i'll also mention he had a close decision against Sturm. So I dont know it'll be interesting as I dont think Mayweather is gonna try to out work him as Mosley did, or out bully him like Bernard did. So he'll have to out box him, which he is more than capable of.

I definately agree He is gonna be way more prepared for this fight than any of his previous fights which like you said is scary. Honestly Oscar says He needed a fight he could get up for and this is it, but I agree I dont think it'll be as one sided as the gatti fight, but I do think he will dominate De La Hoya,
Who do you think would have the best chance at beating Floyd. It's just hard for me to pick against floyd...they same thing was said about Baldomir....I agree this is the most complete fighter Floyd has faced......I think he is hungrier than Oscar....Floyd wanted the fight....not Oscar...Oscar is not into 100% anymore...he's more of a business man. Floyd was under contract with Bob Arum.....who Oscar HATES....would not deal with Arum.....Floyd bought out of his contract with Arum., making him a FREE AGENT. Oscar loss to Mosley.....signed him to Golden Boy Promotions, Lost to Hopkins, signed him to Golden Boy Promotions....see a trend here. Oscar wants the MONEY...win or lose he gets it. The fight is CINCO de Mayo....if he wins, he beat a smaller guy...if he loses he still makes money off of Floyd by signing him. Oscar is Don King's biggest threat right now....which is a good thing.

I thought Hatton looked good to, his opponent was to stiff though, but I think Hatton with his style would give anyone trouble. I was impressed with ngoudjo he reminded me of Clottey. I would like to see him in with that measuring stick zuper Zab.
Castillo looked o.k. considering he was fighting a good opponent. I think hatton would win a unanimous decision if they fought. 8/12 or 7/12.
I think Calzaghe would beat Wright he has the style to do it. He punches from every angle. He also has a crazy work rate. I think he would win a convincing unanimous decision. Unless Calzaghe gets old overnight or something. I think B-hop could give him a run for his money with his awkward style.

Margarito has officially ducked williams(well he hurt his wrist or arm in the clottey fight, or so they say). Anyway I think he has a punchers chance against Cotto. I kinda favor cotto to win, but think Antonio will not be annihilated like most do...

Williams was his mandatory so he gave up the belt to fight Cotto.

will this fight be in PR or the states? .. i think margarito will do well against cotto.. he is strong... and can hit back... unlike many of cottos opponents except for chop chop and he nearly ended the cotto show in Puerto rico for that matter.... but should be a good one though...

Well I for one thought Winky would give Taylor a very technical boxing lesson and get a very decisive unanimous decision. So I was wrong on that assumption, but it never crossed my mind that Wright would get exposed. Even though I thought Wright deserved a split decision victory I certainly wont argue that he got robbed, because it was a close fight.
I just know Wright does not have the power to hurt Calzaghe(not saying calzaghe has the power to hurt Wright either but i'm sure he has more power than Wright), I assume that Calzaghe would beat Wright because if Wright had trouble handling Taylors erratic punches and physical pressure(which I didn't think he would), I see him having the same trouble with the more well rounded Calzaghe. Plus Wright was banged up that fight and that will take its toll.
Wright is similar to Hopkins In the fact that to be effective he has to be facing physically smaller fighters and Joe would be more physically imposing than Wright in my opinion.
That's why taylor gave both of them trouble even though Taylor has but 2 or 3 punches in his arsenal and has awful footwork, i'm sure every time he fights he will by far be the better athlete and the physically bigger man. I would even go as far as saying that due to there styles I would give Taylor a better chance at beating Calzaghe than Wright would... If they fought I think Calzaghe would win by a slim margin via unanimous decision. I would say 8/12 rounds.

I went to my first live boxing match in Houston this past weekend. Lou Savarese was the headline because it was his comeback. I had ringside tickets since my friend used to do buisness with Lou. I had a great time. Chris Henry 17-0 (Light Heavyweight) is new to the scene and I am real impressed with him. I met Chris Henry and he was a great guy who show his appreciation for me coming out to watch him. I believe he is ranked 12th nationally in the WBC. Anyways....sorry if this was off topic, just wanted to share my experience.

Chris Henry is cool.....I saw him beat a buddy of mine in the Amatuers and saw him fight a couple of times here in Houston.....he needs to step up the competitong a little bit....I think only one of they guys he's faught had a winning record.....but he is a good dude.

Hatton looks good against guys that stand in front of him with no movement....Collazo proved that. Castillo seemed to run out of gas...is he still having trouble making weight? I think Ricky out works him....but will eat a lot of leather in the process. I also think Calzaghe beats WInky...Jermain has power....and a nice jab when he uses it...but some times he seems clumsy and off balanced. He's like an Old Howitzer....has to be planted and dug in to fire. Calzaghe is an M1-Abrahm...can fire on the move from several angles. Calzaghes age COULD play a part....but Wright is no spring chicken himself.

winkys jab would keep joe at bay... no matter what joe tries to do... joe wont rough him up.. he wont knock him out, he wont out box the defensive master...he will hit arms and gloves the entire night... while being hit with the stiff jab all night....
edison miranda does look good.. and has alot of power...but his confidence might be his undoing in the ring....

This was a business move....I think both are overated. Cotto is one dimensional but is HBO's cash cow who call him the next Trinidad...and he brings in a lot of money...Margarito hasnt beaten anyone. So...if you make them fight each other....the loser really dosent lose anything..If either one of them get blown out of the water right now by Williams or Mayweeather...that's it....pretty much one and done. Their teams are doing the right think and getting as many paydays out of them as they can before they are exposed. Cotto was hurt badly by Corley who dosent have much power and by last minute sub Ricardo Torres...so after that...they went after guys who were undefeated...but untested...with NO POWER what so ever....Ginaluca Branco....Paul Malannaggi and Carlos Quintana.
Everyone saw what happend to David Reid and Fernando Vargas....they were hyped up and placed in fights they werent ready for.....
Think about it...Not many people know of Margarito now.....what happens after he looses to Williams?.....Back to ESPN or Best Damn SPort Show period....if he's lucky.

No one is gonna knock Winky out. Joe is the bigger man....Taylors size was a problem with Winky...right now Joe is more seasoned than Taylor. I wouldnt be suprised if he stopped Winky...not a ko...but a TKO. Winky didnt have the power to hurt a SMALL mosley....so I don't think he has the power to keep Joe off of him.

cmon.. you are talking about a guy who has gone through vargas, trinidad, taylor, mosely..... with a strong case of him winning all of the aforementioned.... none of which came even close to knocking out winky.. and joe will? winky gets no respect....what does he have to do? he has gone through the heart of the middle weight class... and still gets no respect.... what does he have to do?..he had the power to keep tito off of him..whom is one of the most prolific punchers of the past 10 years...not a problem.. and joe is not a knockout artist....or have one punch knockout power...i think winky should make the move up and show doubters yet once again.....yes it would be tougher fighting the bigger man...but joes power wont be much of a factor...

Trinidad was one dimensional and came out of retirment....Vargas was young...about 17 fights if that many and still got the decsion even though it was controversial. Shane Mosely is undefeated when fighting guy his size....lost to a bigger Vernon forrest twice and a bigger Winky Wright. He's faced only TWO legit middleweights and that was Taylor and Sam Soliman who some think beat Wright more convincingly than Taylor did. So other that Mosely who was making the jump from 147...he's 1-1-1 against Middleweights...can easily be 0-3......
Joe Calzaghe is bigger than Taylor and Soliman(you should see that fight) More technical also.

Miranda will face Allan Green next...should be an EXCELLENT fight
On March 3rd, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Allan Green is scheduled to face Edison Miranda in an HBO-televised bout. The ink has barely dried on the contracts but the war of words is already beginning. The always talkative Allan Green had this to say on Miranda's promise to knock him out: "Miranda is too stupid to understand science, because he is probably the slowest guy I have ever fought. He has a better chance of tickling a grizzly bear in the a-- with a chicken feather than hitting me. He forgets that I am a puncher also. I will expose, embarrass and destroy him. He is too stupid to know any better but he will get an education on March 3rd." On fighting in Puerto Rico, Green stated, "I look forward to fighting in Puerto Rico. I have a lot of fans there. Someone needs to tell Miranda that he isn't Puerto Rican. He is very fragile mentally, so he is looking for love from Puerto Rico."

EVER? Right off the top of my head.....
1....I HAVE to go with Ali....
2....Sugar Ray Robinson
3.....Even though I HATE to put him this high....Marciano
Today I would say
1. Mayweather
2. Manny Pacquiao
3. Bernard Hopkins

Dude...I used to WORSHIP Roy Jones. I always thought he should have had rematches with Toney and Hopkins. If he would have retired after the Ruiz fight....you could have made a case for him being the best ever...but the loses to Tarver(who I think he would have beaten if he hadnt made the move to Heavyweight) and Glen Johnson hurt his legacy....Also fights with Darius Michealshski, Toney and Hopkins...even Trinidad would have silenced critics.
Tyson...Tyson is on the same road as Sonny Liston...people are debating if he could make it past 50....BEFORE Tyson went to prison....he was one of the best ever....Don King ruined him...after Prison he was just a name...a side show. There will never be another HW like Tyson IMO....I can watch ESPN classic all day and watch all the old Tyson footage.

There is a RUMOR that he and Hopkins are supposed to get it on. If this was 10 years ago it would be something to get excited about. If Jones wants to re-polish his lecacy....there is Joe Calzaghe...if he beats Joe you have to take him seriously and put him back in the mix....the way Hopkins looked against Tarver....he kills Roy right now. Roy is shell shocked. His last fight was in Boise.....that shows you the drawing power Jones has now.

Tarver ballooned to the weight roy put on in doing the rocky movie.... and looked what happened when he went back down to light heavy.... he looked slow, sluggish and had nothing against Bhop.... pre move up to heavy... roy would have ripped calzaghe..he would have destroyed the smaller tito.... Dariusz didnt want to come to the states..... jones with his drawing power at that time... i wouldnt have chased dariusz all over the world to fight him either if i were roy....
