Friday night Kerrville Tivy played historical rival and neighboring town, Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg has dropped down to 3A for the first time in 33 years, and is obviously both a smaller school with far fewer students than Kerrville.
Kerrville, picked in the top 25 in some 4A polls I've seen, annihilated them 70-3. The Kerrville newspaper blamed it on razing from a small group of Fredericksburg fans.
I'm an old FHS alum, and I well remember bitter, hard fought games with Tivy, and beating them. I was surprised to run into someone from another town in our district in college and learn that they hated Tivy as much as we did--and they didn't have the history with them we did!
So for those of you that play Tivy this year--give 'em hell. And I hope that if your team is ever in the position to make a game embarrassing you do what my team did just last November. We played our district doormat in November. We scored over 30 points in the first quarter. At half the coaches agreed to run the clock without stopping in the second half. the final score was something like 56 to 20 something (they finally scored two touchdowns on our third string at the end). That should be bad enough for anyone. Razing from opposing fans doesn't justify anything.
So, as we used to say when I was in high school in Fredericksburg, Tivy sucks and never quits! (Is that what they were yelling that so angered the antlers?) Good luck to all teams facing them!
