1.) 50 cent is not considered rap - I would classify it as pop more then anything.
2.) "Young Weezy" has a unique voice, but that is about as far as his skills go. I am a fan, but he is not even in the same breath with Nas, Jay, Scarface (for my H-town friends)
3.) Cassidy? ...Please. He is not even the best in Philly
4.) Say what you want - but Em should deff. be on there. His early **** was no doubt some of the hottest out and the infuence he has had on the industry is enourmous. I can't even believe you would put Cassidy on there and not Em.
Use some common sense before you post.

True...Nas is the best on THIS list...Why Weezy,Cassidy and 50 are even on here is crazy. I think Jay Z was pop before the blueprint....was it "the life and times of shawn carter vol. 1"...the album with Hardknock LIfe?

Well since I could not identify any of the choices, I would be making an uneducated vote. And I don't do that. This does not mean I do not like rap. It just means that the rap I know of is probably a bit old school for this list. Granted Rap is not my favorite by far but to rule out any kind of music as a group would not be accurate for me. I like Cowboy Troy. :D

It's songs like Gasolina that make me want to learn to produce records. If that's what makes you high six or seven figures these days...
I don't know what's worse, Gasolina or the Holla Back song by Gwen Stefani.
I saw the video for Gasolina aired on a talk show when I was watching Telemundo or Univision (can't remember which of those for sure), and these young people were going nuts over it. There were 8-10 year old girls and boys freak dancing up on the studio stage.

eminem is a unebelievably talented rapper and you are in denial if you say he is not! I guess he was not listed because he is white? The best "in my opinion" that are the most recent (in no particular order) are eminem, jay-z, naz, twista, snoop, and scarface.
By the way i listen to about all types of music besides country. I like everything from hip hop, classic rock, hard rock, to some pop and some blues. I have a wide taste. I cannot hack country though. I have tried and i just cannot do it.

eminem did not get his shot because he does wild and stupid things. He got his shot because he was one of the top (if not the top) rappers in Detroit and in the world. Dr Dre does not sign rappers with no talent. he signs the best and the results prove that. After fake weak *** wannabe white rappers like vanilla ice a producer would really be taking a chance on a white rapper. Then came eminem. Eminem was so talented that it did not matter. Dr Dre thought he was black when he first heard his tape. He called him and found out he was white. Look what most of the respected rappers say about him. they say he is scary talented. 50 cent has huge respect for eminem and his skills. eminem helped give him his shot or he would not even exist in the rap game today. To say eminem is not a very gifted rapper because he is white is idiotic. That would be like saying Dirk Nowitzki or Larry Bird are or was not talented basketball players because they are white. Even though they are in the top 5 in about every statistical category during their era's. Would be like saying Tiger Woods is not a talented golfer because he is a black man in a mostly white man's sport. Silly logic to me.

I don't think anyone said the he is not talented because he is white. I think what was meant is that he probably attracted a larger following of white people and perhaps introced them to a form of music they might not have been interested in before. Therefore it gave him a boost in fan base that other rappers may not have had before but now probably do because people listen to the music and not try to label it by color.

Why do people keep harping on Eminemem's whiteness. I don't hate him because he is white. I am white too. It is excellent camouflage in a snowstorm. Although I could possibly hate him because he is white. I never got along with my parents as a teenager and both of them are white. Hmm...

I was just responding to his comments kitty. If you really want to know how good a person is in his field then just ask his colleagues. Eminem gets mad respect from his colleagues. If he was a phony with no talent they would let him know it and everybody else know it. He would not still be around if he was a phony. He would have been gone in a flash like vanilla ice. He is one of the most successful and consistent rappers out there for a long time now. That is not easy to do, and you do not do that in the rap game without a lot of talent.

I'm not saying he's not great because he's white. The guy is talented big time...one of my favorites. BUT there are other rappers just as talented or maybe more that are out there. Dre is a business man...he knew what he was doing. He was giving young white teenagers someone to relate too. I mean they were buying rap music too. Eminem was outside the "Normal"..again, not to say he wasnt talented...he's not a novelty act like Young Black Teenagers(remember those guys), Vanillia Ice and Kid Rock(remember he was a rapper first) was. All I'm saying is that if Em was black...he'd be Nas. A great lyricist that only the Hardcore fans know about.

IMO - Rap is not true or good music and therefore, there is no good rapper. I know the kids like it but I have trained my teens to appreciate real music: Beatles, Zepp, Springsteen, Mozart, Bach, Bennie Goodman (any big band), Dean and Frank, Gershwin, Buddy Holly - REAL music and they like it all. They hate rap so I guess my job is done.
Holly, for his all too short time on this earth, was a musical innovator (and a Texan) and many of the most famous musicians after his time attribute their success to him and the processes he brought forth (most obvious was overdubbing which he used brilliantly on Words of Love). His most famous followers were, of course, The Beatles.

Do you REALLY like M&M? I would much prefer watching your Panthers playing under the Friday nite lights.
I do not buy any of his cd's now but i did have a few in the past. I like his music. I like all kinds of music ktcarl. I like everything from the Eagles, Bad Company, Metallica etc etc to eminem, korn, and jay z etc etc. I even like some pop songs. I grew up in a different era then you. My father and one of my older sisters hate it but not me. I remember he flipped when he listened to what i was listening to in my car one day when i was like 18. I had scarface in. He chunked it, but i just got another tape the next day. I do not listen to the real hard stuff anymore. Kids change you.

Some of the background music on Rap songs are pretty good. If there was a way to turn down the abrasive sound of the rapping and just have the music play it would be good stuff. Rapping and singing aren't in the same ballpark.

Oh I know and I agree with you. But he is not on the list. I actually would have known who he is and recognized his stuff.

Again, I'm definitely a hard rock/metal fan first but there are and have been some very talented rap musicians.
I don't think there is one definition as to what "real music" is. That is up to the ears and senses of the listener.
Real music to one person is Paul McCartney and John Lennon belting out vocals to a Beatles song and Tupac rapping about staying strong in a tough world to another.

Well, I briefly met you and Wide at the Cove game last year and you're alright. I knew right at the beginning of this thread that I would get something stirred up. I also like a lot of different types of music but for some reason can't get over the obstacles that Rap puts up. I was a big Beatles fan when they first came out and I remember my parents saying, "You gotta be kidding?!" Even as big a fan that I was of the Fab Four I didn't like every single song they produced.

Will Smith
Yeah and remember what eminem told him in of his songs. So Will Smith does not cuss on his albums well f him and f you too. Something like that i forget? I personally respect Will for not cussing but his music is lame with a capital L. Some of the great rappers in the past did not have to cuss. It does not bother me that much though. You just learn to accept it. I guess if you hear it so much that you get used to it. The era that i grew up in as a teenager (early 90's) was much harder then now. It was hard core gangstah rap when i was a teenager. For the most part. So this stuff does not phase me.

Thanks for letting me know i am alright. ;) You are alright too. I talked to yo for about 3 seconds if my memory serves me correctly? Hard to get to know a person in that amount of time. Maybe we will see each other again. I will have to bring the family so you can meet them next time. They rarely go to out of town games.

There is this Christian Rapper I like.... KJ-52... he sounds just like eminem. I remember one day I was in my girls car and she had her MP3 on and the song "Dear Slim" came on... or so I thought... I was like "What?! I didn't know you listened to Eminem... I thought you didn't listen to anything with cussing in it"... then she was like "I knew you would think that was eminem" and proceded to laugh... by the time I actually started listening to the words I realized it was a remake of the song Dear Slim and it was a Christian version that was dedicated to eminem... he was calling out to eminem.. to get saved......
He made 2 editions of the song... he did the first one and then a follow up... I thought it was fantastic... check it out...

The best place to find The old good rap is soundwaves in houston. right now in my car is Ice Cube's death certificate, and Kill at will. Dr. Dre's Murder was the case sound track. Scarface presents: The Product. Paul wall and Chamillionaire's get your mind correct. My son always say's "the stole that from 50 cent..etc..etc." I say "Nope..these guys were around waayyy before 50 cent. Rap used to be something you related to, growing up, being harrased..etc..etc....now your lyrics can SUCK as long as you talk about how many cars with big rims you have...how many women are in your video...etc. Then it really messed me up when I found out most of the stuff in Videos were Rented. Everything from the house, to the cars, to the jewlery....all rented. In one of Ice Cubes songs he raps "If I drove it in a video, I can drive it home" Not too many rappers can say that.
Seriously though....Grand Master C, Black Jack, Simple Sally and DJ Clean Cut were the best rap group ever.....for those who dont know who I'm talking about..here is the album cover

I know hes been around for a while. But this cd will put him in the group of "best rapper alive".
I try to look at things from all angles, some may say I think too much or "outside the box". But a lot of people say society is a result of the music, kids are trying to be like these rappers...etc. etc. It can actually be the OTHER way around. The culture, for good or bad has been around waaayyy before rap music. Rap music started as guys talking about their everyday lives, making it rhyme. They talked about what they saw everyday and what they related to. As the times changed, the music changed to keep up. We started ranking on each other(dozens) and rapped about what we did as teens(house partys, etc) everyone put what they did on a daily basis in the form of a rhyme.
The West Coast, ala N.W.A. did they same thing...even though it wasnt positive...it was real...they talked about what they did. If they knew it or not, they were sending out a cry for help. "Hey world, look what goes on around US"...the drugs, the gangs...and all this stuff that the rest of the world dosent know about. Drugs and gangs didnt start with NWA....NWA brought it to the front. Instead of dealing with the problem...we shoot the messenger. BAN RAP. Same thing in Miami when prostitution in strip clups ran the city....instead of taking care of the problem...ban Luke and the 2 live crew.
The rappers with the longevity are they rappers that change with society. That's why gimmick rappers like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer are things of the past. These days you cant talk about the things you did and go through because today's consumer has changed. You have to keep up with them. and today they want to hear useless gibberish over and over again...that's why you have all these "Wack" rappers on top of the charts and they great ones arent really selling.
