College is nothing but tests for grades. Honestly, maybe you should take a class on taking tests. They do help.

Its not that I CAN'T do good on tests, I just don't study for them or anything. We took a test friday and I got a 70 on it. I normally average around a 45 in that class on tests...

not bad at all for NOT studying, NOT doing hw at home..imagine if i tried:D

its time to sign up for next year:( ..i think i'll have all honors/pre-ap/ap next year..it'll suckkkkkkk

what sucks is i have a like 93-94 GPA and im ranked 232 out of 632..that is freaking ridiculus IMO

I know. I studied for the last test, but not as much as I could. I am shooting for As now though. It shouldnt be hard if I read the 20 -30 pages before every class and do good on the quizzes and tests. I normally do okay on the DBQs, but I do bad on History and English essays

do you have English and History regular? I don't have to take speech because I took Honors English 9th grade, and I took IPC in 8th grade. I took spanish 1 in 7th and 8th grade. (have to take both to get 1 credit...)

I'm not good at argument essays. Right now we are moving on to a new type, but I can't even remember what it its:( In history he tells us the words he wanted to see in the essay AFTER we write it, and its about 4 typed pages (1 word per line, of course) at size 8 font:eek: I'm sorry, but I am not writing a book. Especially in the 45 minutes we get, right after our test.

wow that SUCKS!! each class room at our school, has those pull down map things, plus the atlas's..its VERY helpful

For me to study good I put on some good music, real low, and then study, Normally on my bed, unless i get tired(dont want to fall asleep while studying). I put the music on so I don't get sidetracked by other noises, and so I don't get bored to easily.

ive tried that, and i just lose focus..i study the best while on here, i dont know why..i ask my friends to quiz me on aim, and then i guess in between problems this lets me relax or something

It's not that hard majority of the schools use a window's based programm if you had the ip to one of the main computers or a computer to a certain class you could slide pass.

If you have the right password you can get in. I do not wish to know this password because I would not want to change mine or someone elses grades.

OH. Gradespeed is cool because there is a parent area where parents can sign up and look at your grades. AND the individual grade for each assignment. My mom doesn't know how to get there, but she knows it exists. Me and my sister share an account, I can look at my grades whenever I want, from any computer:D

LOL. its funny though. Cause my mom was always like "What do you have in history" and I'll be like "I don't know" and she'll be like "I CAN GO UPSTAIRS AND CHECK YOUR GRADES RIGHT NOW SO YOU BETTER TELL ME OR YOU WILL BE IN TROUBLE." I don't do this anymore though. Now that I know what my grade is, I say "about a 70" if I'm failing (i get yelled at, but not as bad as if I were to say 60 something), and I'll tell her actual grade if its over 70.

Yeah I get that alot. If I get anything below an 80 I get yelled at. If I get in the 70's, they yell at me and I just tell them that I will bring it up and don't worry about it.(which they do because they have a right to know about it).

yep. When I got into TAG I set the bar WAY to high.

My sister is a senior. She took pretty much the same classes last year that I am taking this year. Same physics class, same History class, same English class and she got STRAIGHT As.

when I joined it was Gifted and Talented. the later changed it to Talented and Gifted (someone real gifted came up with that idea:rolleyes:). In elementary it is basically a class that you take where you learn at a higher level, and you do a lot of puzzle's and mind boggling type stuff (i guess thats how I would describe it...)

TAG for MS and HS is just Honors but more in-depth.

My advice to all you guys...(no matter what school you're going to unless it's crappy and you can get in doing whatever you like).... is to seriously take care of business in high school and do as well as possible. I never had to study in high school and made it out in 10.4 % of my class. The year before, my hs was ranked 2nd in the metroplex (for public schools) only to Highland Park as far as academics are concerned. I believe it was Dallas Morning News that did the rankings.....Anyway I'm getting off topic. The point is: take care of business NOW while it's still very easy and you'll be accepted into a good school and will be able to get into whatever major in that school you'd like. Transferring for me to Mccomb's business school from liberal arts is pretty much a pipe dream, but I could have easily been accepted if I'd only have done what I should have in high school. Now I'm gonna have to pay for it by going to graduate school in order to do what I'd like.

Your graduating in 08 but you are taking english 3 now? or is 08 just a number....? and where is your history grade?
Rocket... Most people that attend Garland High do so for the IB program. Most take English I in 8th grade, and begin HS taking English II. In order to meet the states requirement of taking a core english class every year, most students end up taking English V their senior year.

Amen to all of that.

I'm sure y'all hear that from teachers, parents, family...alot of people you don't want to hear it from and you probably just blow it off.

I'm sure most of y'all think it won't apply to you...and that's normal...but take it from mtbray, myself, and many people I know that were in the same shoes y'all were in...

Learn how to study NOW and you'll be much better off when you get to college.

I was like ya'll in HS. I basically coasted all the way through AP Physics II, AP Calculus, AP English (with a 5 and a 4 on the AP tests), etc...but college kicked my *** for a good two and a half years before I truly learned what it meant to really study. By then, my GPA was pretty much set. Although it wasn't bad, it did not reflect what I was capable of and I do believe it really hurt me when it came time to interview for jobs. You do not want to be in the situation I was in...a tight job market, with not a whole lot of tangible evidence to set yourself apart from your colleagues. The result, for me, was 6 months out of college, with an engineering degree from a Top 10 university, without a full-time job.

Please, save yourselves the headache and start learning good habits now. I know, I know..."it won't happen to you." Unless you are just extremely gifted, trust me, it can.

Im in college now, and can honestly regret not trying my hardest all the way through highschool. I coasted through, barely studying, and im just not starting to realize what kind of effort it takes to make the grades in college.

Like people have said. Try hard in school NOW, learn how to study properly. It will make college classes easier later.

I've got to completely agree, although I'm only in my 3rd semester here. My first year I sort of had a tough time adjusting to college (UT being so big and all) but this 3rd semester I've actually been trying so far about 85-90% and my grades are MUCH better with me trying, even though my classes aren't as easy as they were freshman year. Take it from ktchamp kids, learn to study now.

A bigger point I wanted to express though is that you should study now to get position on the other students while it's easy to do.

If you study now and get ahead in your class (top 2 or 3 % of your class...which really shouldn't be difficult to do since no one actually tries in high school) so you can do what you like in college.

For example, if I could have been accepted into the business program here at UT, and I wanted to transfer into any other college w/in the university to change my majopr, I'd be able to do just about anything. If you come in and get into a not-so-good major, and you decide you want to do something else you'll be screwed.

Agree on all points with mtbray and ktchamp.

In our education system today, so much emphasis is placed on results that the process involved to obtain them is either eliminated (special calculators, Internet, etc.) or just plain overlooked. Results are obviously important, but don't mean much if you don't understand the steps involved to get there.

In high school, you usually test once every couple of weeks and get quiz grades once or twice a week in addition to homework grades. Then, it's onto the next phase and the previous curriculum is forgotten (until it's time to cram for that final). I think the Euro method has us far surpassed in that regard. Their high school equivalent students learn in a manner similar to what American college students do over here. You might have 3-4 test grades (or just a term length project) in a semester, and that's pretty much your result in that class. So, more emphasis is focused on soaking in the material rather than powering through to meet an ambitious curriculum requirement.

I didn't convince myself to really study the processes or steps involved in gaining conclusions until I was over a year into college. I took on the attitude of just wanting to "get by" and throw answers down. When I finally convinced myself to do otherwise and commit myself to studying the details, I finished out college by making the Dean's List in each of my final four semesters.

Getting a college degree is very important, but it doesn't guarantee you anything except unlocked doors. You have to be prepared to walk through and deal with what's on the other side.

There's a quote I like, not sure who it is by, that goes:

"Life is 10% action (what happens) and 90% reaction (how you respond)."

Sorry to quote from like...the first page, but a question was asked of me...

I'm in a program called International Baccalaureate. Basically, its very accellerated classes, so I took IPC, Algebra 1 and English 1 as an 8th grader. I do not have a history class this year because of some convoluted IB stuff that I don't really understand...I think it's cause I took a history in 8th grade or something...
