LOL :laugh at the recruiting sites rating him a 4 star when most of Texas thought he was a no duh future 1st round talent. The rest of the nation was behind on that one.

yep - and the reality is Dez was woefully under-utilized at Lufkin. Coach O is the first to say that. He should have been touching the ball 20 times a game minimum.

Coach O had some weapons at that time for sure! Congrats to Dez..I hope he has a long pro career.

I remember looking at the 2007 LSR top 100 from Geoff Ketchum (orangebloods.com writer), and he had him ranked #6 at one point and the in the little tidbit that they had written about Dez, Geoff wrote.....
"Hes my personal clear cut #1 player in the state as far as talent goes, but i dont know if he will qualify"
So good for Dez. Before him, there was a disturbing pattern of talented Lufkin players that werent able to qualify coming straight out of high school (lenard hewitt and McKinner Dixon immediately come to mind), so it was good to see him break that small trend. He signed so quickly for obvious reasons IMO. This has to be a dream come true....to be able to play for your homestate team who you've probably rooted for all your life, and now they just so happen to be NFC/superbowl contenders. With all the offense weapons the cowboys have, he knew that he was gonna need to get into camp ASAP to earn his playing time....

When did they become superbowl contenders?

When did they become superbowl contenders?
I would say last year when they won the NFC east, beat the defending champion at their place when they still wanted to preserve a perfect season, and when we hosted and won a playoff game. Remember i said "contenders" not "favorites" even though they very well may be the favorite if it wasnt for Jason Garrett. You can't name me more than 5 teams that...going into the season with no injuries (knock on wood) are better than the cowboys based on the talent they have.....thus making them contenders.
sorry for hijacking the thread, but we have a hater in the house;)

As if the Lufkin/Carroll showdowns weren't enough, I have reached a new level of respect for this young man. He is a throw back. Money is important no doubt but he chose his love of the game to ensure he was involved with the Cowboys from day one. No matter how his career goes ( IMHO it will be great) I will always respect him. Way to go Dez:yes:

I love the Cowboys but I'm realistic. The Cowboys are always talented but talent alone does not guarantee you victories.

From a player standpoint, the only thing that worries me about this squad is the offensive line. Tony was sacked about the 4th most times in the league last year.
Overall, the thing that worries me the most is the playcalling.

There were those back in 2006 before the RR game that told Dez he would never amount to anything. Those folks are still around too, so I wonder what sauce they will use when they eat their crow.
Most of what the national media and people are saying is based on rumors, exaggerations and hearsay. Yes, Dez was not in the top of his class and he did have some occasional time management problems in high school, but he never had a problem when he was playing football, nor was HE ever in trouble with the law. He is one of those rare individuals that was just born to play the game of football and make a living with it. I have never seen a better all around receiver in high school, you better get that rookie card cause it's going to be worth something in the next few years.

I agree with you 100% that this kid has what it takes to be a very special player for many years to come. He could really do great things in the NFL. He is a very special talent on that field.
But, this kid better get his ego in check. When a vet ask you to carry his pads in, just carry them in. He is about to really get "punked" by some of these players that have put the time and work in. Get ready to see him on ESPN taped to the goal post with a jock on his head and water being dumped all over him. Dinner on DEZ coming soon. He is losing some respect from some of his teammates (he will get it back once he starts catching passes and scoring touchdowns) and that is not good. He needs to just pay his rookie dues and live with it. No one is bigger than the team and that is the message he is giving his teammates. I don't understand his thinking at all, things are about to get rough for him at camp.

Kid should have cracked a smile and took the pads...afterall he is doing it in real life anyway.

I can tell by a few of your remarks that some of you guys don't know much about Dez . It's also evident the media assumes on a lot of hearsay as well. The kid is not egotistical or thinks he is above anyone else on the team. He has alway let his play do the talking and this will be the case again with the Cowboys.

Geez, what are you, his Mother? :)
It is only light criticism, and should disappear when things get more serious next month. Look at what Roy Williams has to put up with. How about you defend him for a bit for being top notch about the whole thing?

This stupid pad thing went nation wide with the media and people making some of the most ridiculous and inaccurate assumptions.
Your right it will die down and go away, but this has grown tiring. I have known and watched this kid play since the 7th grade, just trying to get his back.

I bet he is a great kid and as we all know one hell of a football player.
But, from your comments I would GUESS that you don't know alot about professional sports. It is just a stupid pad thing but something ALL rookies go through. Pay your dues...... Like we all have said it will go away, but i promise their are some old vets in that locker room with a sour taste in their mouth from this. It's all part of the GAME.......

Did not say Dez should not have carried the pads out of tradition. I said it is stupid to make a big national deal out of it. I have been around professional football quite a bit in fact and know most of the old traditions the vets hold to and they are different with every team and generation.
Dez will pay his dues like every rookie, like singing his HS fight song, buying coffee every morning for someone, up at 4:00 AM to get someone a paper, picking up some big dine out tabs or having a few cars detailed. It's going to cost him one way or another.
My uncle worked for the Cowboys for over 30 years, so I got to go to lots of Cowboy games and events during those years. Even got to shoot basketball with Roger Staubach at his house one time.

Fact is, that rift before the RR game took down one of the most talented teams not to win a state championship. He was at the center of it. He was challenged by his coaches and got his feelings hurt. He was a high schooler- can't say I can blame him, but it was what it was.
Dez did blow up his college experience because he was in love with a whole lot of "me." I'd say he made the naysayers right in screwing it up.
His talent is undeniable, but his contract with the Cowboys doesn't erase what happened in the past. It absolutely gives him a fresh start though.
The guy has gone through some rough things in life. His future lies in his own hands, and for that, hopefully, he is thankful. I will be rooting for him to do well- both on and off the field.

I think it is great he is on a team like the Cowboys who have lots of talented vet receivers on hand. This will help Dez mature as a person and player.
The RR deal was not good but it's in the past.

I'm willing to bet that this isn't the first time that a rookie has said no.
I don't think Dez has the "ego" that people are assuming that he has. Dude has made it very clear that he is there to do a job, and his actions show that he wants to do the right things. Should he have picked up the pads? Yes but, people act as if Dez slapped Roy with a backhand. LOL! It seems that it's already been handled in house and, that's good.
Minus this minor incident, Dez has shown thru his actions so far, that he'll do what's right. No big deal! He'll probably just end up paying for, not only Roy's dinner, but Miles and Patrick's too.

yep, startlegram said this morning that he simply did not know of the tradition. Otherwise he would have carried all of Roy's equipment. link (http://www.star-telegram.com/2010/07/27/2365845/cowboys-bryant-was-not-aware-of.html)
Bryant said he was blindsided by the initial request and the reaction that followed because he didn't know anything about the rite of passage tradition of a rookie carrying a veteran's gear after practice. "I didn't know," Bryant said. "And like I told Roy, if I knew that situation was going to turn out this big he could have walked in with his tights on. I would have taken his shoulder pads, his pants, his helmet, his socks, his shoes. I would have took everything."

Im going to tell you all something that only a few people outside Lufkin may know. Leonard Hewitt was equally as talented as Dez was playing DB. It was truly a treat to watch them two go at it on the practice field every day. Let's just say when I was there Hewitt got the best of Bryant most of the time. Unlike me where I got matched up with Bryant once when he ran a dig route(I was a LB) and I will let you all guess who won the fight for the ball. Hewitt was a complete game breaker and I have not seen a DB as talented as him come through Lufkin since I have been around. He was twice the DB Byndom was who just signed with Texas. Leonard was a sure future 1st rounder. I still get chills when I think back off him picking off Chase Daniels 3 weeks after completly tearing his ACL against Pflugerville. Hewitt even shut down Redskins Malcolm Kelley in a scrimage. Kelley did not catch one pass on him.
