I grew up in Katy and went to school here. I've been following Tiger football since 1992, and in that time the best player I've seen is Bill Jatzlau (RB, 1993-94).

I grew up in Seguin and the best player I have ever seen on our team (be it I am still young) is (DE)Terrance Woods (02-04... he was dominant at 6'0 250... quick and strong... met a guy recently that played tackle for New Braunfels.. as soon as I told him I went to Seguin he said "Did you know Terrance Woods? That guy was the best player I ever played against... where did he go"? Sadly he is playing JUCO.
Also, current player CB Desmond Jackson.

Chris Pryor-Running Back 82-83~Lead the Rockets to the Semis his junior year then lead them to a win over Midland Lee in Judson's first state championship victory in 83.
Jerrod Douglas-Running Back 92-93~Dominated football while in high school. Was San Antonio's career leading rusher (recently broken by Wilkerson) and lead the Rockets to two straight state titles in 92-93.
Kyle Fox-Running Back 02-04~Would have easily held some records if he hadnt been behind Chancey Campbell for two years. Helped the 02 tremendously throughout the playoffs and into the 02 championship. Had just over 1000 yards in junior year as a backup. Had 2600 his senior year with only playing partial games helping the Rockets make it to the semis in 04.
Not one of these men could be stopped.

Derrick Johnson.....his stance on the field was recognized before the game even started. And, was felt from the first play of the game thorugh the end.

Rusty Bucy...I recently watch my old highlight videos, and he was as dominant a HS linebacker that I saw or played against.

Warren McVea - San Antonio Brackenridge
Please note that Warren McVea did not play at my school (Tyler Lee); but I think he is best player of all time. The best player at my school was OL Randy Grimes, Class '79...(2nd Team All-American at Baylor and All-Pro for Tampa Bay).

Hands down it is Bobby Reid. Not that North Shore hadn't had good quarterbacks before he came along, but he was the first true quarterback to come along. Before him you had Cedric Cormier and Willie Gaston both exceptional quarterback but not near what Bobby was. Now if either of them would have had Bobby's passing ability who knows North Shore might have more than jus tone state title in the trophy case.

UIL to present- Stephen Tyree- 3 year starter on the gridiron. Lead team in interceptions and recieving yards at WR and FS. Lead team to 9-2 as a senior in 06 during Jesuit's dream season. Committed to Bucknell for basketball after lettering for 4 years and starting 3.

Not many people on here are old enough to remember him. He is the most amazing running back I have ever seen. He was probably just a tad faster than Cedric Benson...but alot more moves...and could do foward front flips over defenders and land on his feet. Just amazing.......
Guess who's son will be back-up running back this year for Waco High? Louis'.....and heard he is alot like his dad. He is a sophomore......Jared Salubi is starting...but heard his son is going to make a big fight to start. And, Salubi will go major D-1.

Will thompson i'd say. Bill was great but i think he was more hard work then pure skill. Will is more balanced on both. Every one remembers the int. of Daniel in the 03 state game as a soph.

since I played at 2 High schools...
WF Rider- Khari Long DE ( late 90's) was on that 2-8 team that went to quarterfinals(wrote about it in another thread) Very quick, and dominant on the line.
Paul Johns WR( late 70's) went to Okie State, played for Seattle until injury ended his career. 6', 190#, "average" speed. ALWAYS open and hands of glue
Abernathy- Rick Houston OT(early 80's) lead team to quarterfinals last 2 years of HS. Played for Oklahoma and Phila Eagles. 6'5" and 300 before it was cool to be that big. Was talking about his career, and said toughest thing he had to do was block Reggie White in practice, said it was impossible!

Of course that's probably because I'm biased - he, like myself, is an ex-Spring Branch Bear:) Also, he was runner up for the Heisman, a great running back and to this day, an all around nice guy. I remember watching him at old Reggie Grob stadium when I was a kid and he was my hero. I saw him in August at an all school reunion (at Grob no less!) and he looked better than most 20 year olds!!

Johnny Jackson, DB/QB, Harlingen High.
Johnny Jackson played in the mid-80's and went on to star as a db at Houston, back when Houston was good. At one time he held an NCAA interception record (I can't remember which off the top of my head.) He was a back up for the 49ers and won a Super Bowl ring.

Best I've seen personally at lake was Elrick Jones, lightining fast with good hands. He and Oswald were the core of the offense when we went to the semi's. Probably the best player in Lake's history would be Steve McKinney because he went pro, but that necessarily doesnt mean you were phenomenal in high school.

We've actually had a few. David Parks comes to mind. I think you'd have to consider Sneezy in there also. Not to mention the great Billy Olson (track and field world record holder and the first to clear 19' in pole vault. Marcus Johnson, or how about Daivd Little (basketball). Mark Oates (gymnastics). Loyal Proffitt could've been really great if he had someone to throw the ball to.
Can't argue Jack Mildren (Cooper) or Terry Orr for that matter.

At the HS level, the best I've seen would be Dane Johnson, Southlake Carroll, 92 & 93, the best playmaker I've ever seen and it was at the 3-A level..unstoppable (RB) on offense and shut down half the other team on Defense...you had to be there to believe it...

Not a chance. Maybe the last 4 years. You have to go back 30 or 40 years and see what those players accomplish after Highschool. Everyone can claim to be the best if you lead a team to a state championship. See my earlier post. Thomas, Needman, BR Smith all did that. As did Earl Campell and Craig James. What makes them the greatest is also what they do after highschool. Do they waste their talent in college and never achieve greatness on that level then onto the NFL? That is stil to be seen with Mcneil and JOrvorski. I don't think so. Earl Campbell, Pat Thomas, Craig James and Billy Ray Smith did that.
You have to expand your horizons other than what has happenend since 2000. That only comes with experience and time and looking outside your school of choice.

For Strake Jesuit.....I've got to give a couple. I was there 01-05.
Justin Sandy - RB/FB - Broke his arm midway through his senior season. this kid could flat out run through anything. bad work ethic though...which i think kept him from making it at the next level
Chris Ogbannaya - WR/QB/KR/CB - current Longhorn Fullback was a straight-up play maker at any position. got moved to QB his senior year before an injury and a sub-varsity call-up allowed him to return to reciever. he could make a play wherever he was, and few i ever saw could stop him.
Stephen Tyree - what didnt he play? - this kid could play. ballhawk, play maker at wideout, hard hitting free safety. moved up to varsity in 3 sports his freshman year and didn't ever hit stop
also.....in basketball....best Jesuit player I ever saw was Craig Gilson, now at St. Edward's. This kid had ridiculous hops and great court vision. I never saw Jake Voskul, but I hear he was impressive at the high school level.

great news about marcus, who my son played with at ou, is that he seems to have turned the corner a little. he tore it up at qb at cisco jc and caught on at tarleton. i truly liked him, though i know about his baggage. hope he can get satan behind him. great athlete. looking forward to watching him thru acu games. considering who he'll be competing against for qb snaps, he should do well.

having been watching plano games from the first title year(65), i'd say the best players from all the teams i've cheered and played for were
1) kenneth davis(65-66)-ask any opposing db's what he looked like leading johnny robinson on the quick pitch. he was a two way all-state lineman who qualified for the state meet in the 100 yd dash. got overwhelmed in college.
2) alex williams(67-68)-plano's first black qb. unbelieveable overall athlete. won district in tennis twice and never played except for the district meets. little all-american at howard payne.
3) pat thomas-see above
4) billy ray smith-see above
5) best i saw play vs plano-earl campbell, craig james, jarod douglas, joe wylie(henderson/ou) mckay jacobsen, and a tight end from hamilton park/lake highlands who played for tt and was unstoppable according to all the lb's at rice i played with(can't think of his name right now. i'll edit it in when i come up with it.)

Having gone to Baytown Lee, I was wondering about Dr. George Walmsley... He played there from 1940-1943... As a sophomore he led Lee to their first victory ever over Port Arthur Jefferson (before he arrived Lee was 0-9 against PAJ and had been outscored 408-20 including a 100-0 slaughter)... I know he is in the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame and I remember seeing all the write ups and even a nationally syndicated cartoon hailing his high school accomplishments, but I haven't been able to find much about him on the internet.... All I remember is he was a QB and his feats were unbelievable and that he was considered one of the best ever back in his day...
Anyone know where there might be any records on him?

I was just wondering if he had nightmares about seeing the back of the Number 1 Jersey running away from him? I believe that kid was pretty good. (Kyle Fox)
:D
nope that was the SS that was the only one fast enough to catch that #1 when he was running away thank you
I think I remember a SS from SV 2 years ago....wasnt he really short?

Once he is in the endzone, you cannot call that catching him.

1982-1984 Anthony Johnson (A.J. Johnson) RB/DB Started 4 years at SWT and the last two Started both ways at WR and CB! Played 8 or 9 years in the NFL and won Superbowl with the Redskins.
2001-2003 Yaniv Barnett D-Line - By far the most dominant D-lineman that I've seen in HS. Double and triple teamed every play of every game his senior year and still had nearly 130 tackles with 20+ for loss yards. Aboslute definition of a man among boys while in HS. Started for Mike Stoops at Arizona as a true freshman and will be a junior this coming season. Will play on Sundays!
2003-2005 James Henry DB/RB Unbelievable amount of God-given talent! Great running back with great size and an even better DB! Senior season cut short in the 7th game with broken leg and ankle. Signed with UT on National Signing Day to play DB. Great young man that if he can stay health will also be playing on Sundays in the near future.

[QUOTE=CyFallsMom]Any era? Okay, I'll go with Chris Gilbert.
CFM- You go back to my era! North Shore was a flegling new school with only jr's and sophs and SB was in our distict those years. I can remember Chris Gilbert and Norman Bulaich (LaMarque, Miami Dolphins) tearing us up! My sr year we beat then no 1 state ranked Memorial at their home field and still got beat by SB that year! They were always a tough team.
There are too many greatest ever players from Texas to pick one but the Sugarland Express has to be ranked right up there with the best- Earl Campbell, Bubba Smith, Gilbert, Bulaich, Wooster. The list goes on and on. Some of his national records still stand unbroken.

You are right about those guys. Yaniv and James for sure.
I would also toss in 2002 QB Travis Hunter. He had a rocket arm and great field vision. Standing at 6'4 also didn't hurt.

Cedric Benson... 3 state titles...nuff said...btw...I would like to add that the woodlands was the only team to hold him under 100 yards in his last year!!
Im quite sure Odessa High did the same!!

I remember those days well - I was in elementary school but the memories are vivid- Smiley, Galena Park, Northshore, Victoria...we didn't have anyone else to play but the schools in that direction!! Memorial was very new and then Spring Woods and Westchester came along. When we moved to Spring Branch, Long Point was still part dirt road!!! Cy Fair was the ONLY "Cy" school there was!! We played them too at times - that was a LONG way out the Hempstead Hwy to visit the Bobcats and, yes, we beat them pretty solidly (and their current head coach was on our team at one point too). Then that new school, Jersey Village, opened and we proceeded to rip them up too. I guess I'm showing my age but that's okay - those were good times - suffice it to say that I learned to drive on a two lane farm road called Highway 6 where the only interesting thing you ever saw was Wolves Corner where they hung the dead wolves (I think it was the present day 529 & Hwy 6 but not sure)

That 529 still rolls out to Katy as a 2 lane hwy. If you enter Katy on Katy Hockley Rd you still get that small town flavor. It is gone in just about any other direction you enter Katy from, until you actually get on 90. Maybe if you are coming from Fulshear you could enjoy a small town entrance.

Most people would say that LB/Jessie Armstead was the best from Carter, but I would say RB/Darren Lewis was the best overall.
I would say offense - Darren Lewis and Defense - Jessie Armstead

Hands down it is Bobby Reid. Not that North Shore hadn't had good quarterbacks before he came along, but he was the first true quarterback to come along. Before him you had Cedric Cormier and Willie Gaston both exceptional quarterback but not near what Bobby was. Now if either of them would have had Bobby's passing ability who knows North Shore might have more than jus tone state title in the trophy case.
Certainly a phenominal athlete. Where is he now?

Not from my school - but just up the road from where I live - the player for whom the outstanding high school football player in the country trophy is named (The high school equivalent of the Heisman )
Ken Hall - the Sugarland express who averaged 338 yards per game rushing his senior year and holds the National high school rushing record at 11,232 yards in 3 years - 38 straight games over 100 yards rushing. He was one of the famous "Junction Boys" at Texas A&M for Bear Bryant, and I remember him playing for the Oilers in their early years. Played for Sugarland High School 1950 - 1953.
