Arggghhhhh!!!!!

I know it is not a crime for the journalist who wrote the article or the paper that published it, but dammit. We have to find a way to get to the person who leaked this kind of crap.

(she steps carefully down from soapbox)

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/25/world/25military.html?hp

First part of article (highlights entirely mine):

WASHINGTON — The top American commander in the Middle East has ordered a broad expansion of clandestine military activity in an effort to disrupt militant groups or counter threats in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and other countries in the region, according to defense officials and military documents.

The secret directive, signed in September by Gen. David H. Petraeus, authorizes the sending of American Special Operations troops to both friendly and hostile nations in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa to gather intelligence and build ties with local forces. Officials said the order also permits reconnaissance that could pave the way for possible military strikes in Iran if tensions over its nuclear ambitions escalate.

Apparently the words clandestine, secret and covert (used in article title) have changed meaning since I had a Security Clearance. The ban on me speaking of what I knew then will expire a few decades after the end of my expected life expectancy.

Screw the NY Times and the idiot who wrote this. I am much more concerned about putting US forces in some extra degree of danger so some jerks in New York can think of themselves as investigative reporters and the monitor/arbiter of the US military. Such items are necessarily secret for a resaon. If you feel like reporting on our special forces, SEALs, activities, do so after the fact; not while they might be in the field on an operation.

The meanings have not changed. The people that are trusted with them have.

Why this is news baffles me. The fact that we have special ops spread out doing reconnaissance should be no big surprise to anyone.

You know what? I give up.

Let's get a do-over for D-Day. It would have been so much more fair if we had let Herr Hitler know where and when the invasion was going to be.

OF COURSE there were security leaks when I held security clearances and compartmentalized access to programs of importance to the National Security. I never implied otherwise. Thanks so much for letting us all know that this stuff doesn't matter to you. Try to imagine opening up the latest issue of Time Magazine and seeing a huge cover story about a program which, should you discuss same with your neighbor, could land you in prison for a long long time. That has happened to me. I am sensitive to this. That ******* also did not get in trouble but I railed about it then as I do now. I railed about this crap under Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and now Obama. Equal opportunity when it comes to our security.

Just because you think I am as dumb as a box of rocks does not make it true. If your purpose in posting this was to get under my skin, you succeeded. Ain't you just so proud?

There was a time in American journalism where we didn't report on personal lives of public officials or people we held with some esteem and where governmental or military secrets were just that, but in this day of gottca journalism it's no holds barred. Sad, having had a Top Secret clearance and knowing the sensitivity of material I was working with I understand how very dangerous this can be to our men and women in uniform.

Of course someone had to leak it and that is where we need to begin. If they had orders from above then we need to know why. Then again, a V.P. outing a covert, C.I.A. agent is fine and defendable by many in this country. Guess we just don't know the whole story as to why this was leaked.

Leaks are a serious problem. No one said otherwise. The main issue I had with your post is that it seems to suggest that this is a brand new problem that would have NEVER happened back in your day:

Apparently the words clandestine, secret and covert (used in article title) have changed meaning since I had a Security Clearance.

That's demonstrably false. I'd also say it's a giant leap to suggest that no one will get in trouble.

Where you got the idea that I thought this was brand new is beyond me.

This subject has come up on the board before. My position is/was clear. I have been personally affected by this kind of thing (but not put in harm's way) and I have had a problem with it FOR YEARS. And I did make it clear that like you, I suspect, I support the premise that the reporter and the NYT are not prosecutable for the leak. You prints what you gets. Should they have? I would say no. That's why my young idealistic self decided NOT to be a journalist after all. I would not have made it in that world.

Sorry. I will annotate all future posts regarding National Security and my experiences with same.

I thought your point was clear: there was decidedly a time in the United States when the editors of major newpapers would at least exercise some degree of discretion in publishing such information. For a large number, that time of exercising some degree of responsibility has passed. :( They may try to justify it, but to do so should it place American lives in unnecessary jeopardy is inexcusable to me.

I don't think the article divulged anything that the enemies of the USA do not already know or expect. Having US personnel secretly gathering intelligence in these areas is about as predictable as mad_fan playing knight in shining armor to cove_mom everytime she starts crying, as so visibly demonstrated here. :D

It is one thing to think ya we probably have people in all sorts of places. It's another to have it confirmed in news print that it is not only happening but in a top security kind of way.

And FYI- Cove Mom does a pretty damn good job defending herself and stating her opinions. The fact that Mad agrees with her and calls people out is secondary.

It did claim that the NYT viewed a classified document. It's a bit ambigous what level it was classified at...the article claimed the directive was "secret", but it's unclear whether that means it was classified "secret" or if the NYT is using the word stylistically.

Leaks are damaging and they are criminal. People are still prosecuted for them. There's a trial for an NSA official who leaked going on right now. Have the people "changed"?"
