A tip I picked up from Randy Rodgers the other day.... if you don't test really really well, don't let them test you. RR claims you are much better off letting actual colleges watch your game tape.
Put 15 or so key plays on a DVD or VHS tape, followed by one or two complete games on the same DVD/tape. Then send those to the colleges you want to attend. Find out who the position coach is and email/call them. Let them know that you are sending the DVD to them. RR claims they are more likely to watch it if you call first. Then follow up with them and ask them if they got to watch the tape and what did they think. Don't be afraid to ask them if they are interested in you. Be right up front about it.
Again, if you don't have a great 40 time or if you don't run the shuttle quickly enough in your own mind, OR (and this is HUGE) if you are not 100% that day OR if the weather is crappy that day..... if you are not ON TOP OF YOUR GAME, do not test.
Once numbers get posted next to your name, it's now the perception of who you are.
If you still want to do this testing and only you can make that determination, find out from the camp folks what college coaches will be there. Pin them down. As RR put it so well, neither Nike nor Rivals have college scholarships to offer.
If you and your parents haven't put a game plan together yet, I highly HIGHLY recommend you make contact with Randy Rodgers and put something together. Considering what a 4 year college scholarship is worth these days, investing a few buck with RR is a smart move.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions about all this stuff. I've really only been getting into it, but I've learned a lot so far. My son is a 2008 O-lineman, so I'm probably a year too early, but these days you can't start early enough when it comes to getting your plan together. I've had some help from two guys that are really really into this stuff.
Finally don't count on your coaches to do this stuff for you. They mean well, but they've got important stuff to do. Getting you a scholarship is not one of them.
P.S. Report to 2-a-days this summer in 110% shape. The first few games of your senior year, you'll want to make a new tape/dvd and send it out again. You'll want to be on top of your game that first game. Too many bg guys use 2adays to try to get into shape and their first game or two suffers because of it.

Thanks for the info!!! I'll ask the question.... What is the personal recruiter cost? I know a scholarship (full or partial) is worth a ton of money, so any investment now would be worth it for results. Never mind... went through the web site. Duh... ;)

I don't have any affiliation with RR, but I like his attitude a lot. Very realistic in his approach both as a former recruiting coordinator for UT and as a parent with three sons that played at Westlake.
I'm not sure you need him to visit the home, per se, but the phone call thing is probably mandatory in my book if you've missed his seminars.

Really???i though that is the most important thing to coaches. I know according to my coaches, getting us to the next level, and giving us a free college education is most important, they got 2 of these special computers and stuff that hooks up to a VHS recorder and TV and our coaches spend heck of alot of time on making tapes and stuff i've even sat in on one day with one of our coaches and seen him make tapes, make calls and all this other stuff and it is alot of work, all coaching staffs don't do things like that??????

No not the Combine, its the Camp at College Station at Texas A&M, or from what i read if i have time management problems, i can send my confirmation letter back to and put down any other site to attend the other camps around the nation, i would just to have the transportation there.

your coaches may have your future collegiate future in mind, but it pales in comparison to your present ability to help them keep their job(win hs games). nothing like earning a paycheck to keep your priorities str8.

well if they manage to do all of that, as well as go undefeated and win district, then i dont believe they will have to sweat about their jobs, money shouldn't be everything, our coach has pride and even gives speeches about wanting to see his athletes on TV on Saturdays playing, and even on Sundays and Monday nights, he already has a few in the league from his past job...
plus i doubt Mr. Banks will never get rid of Coach Brantley and this staff from this year, you don't find a coach like Coach B. every day, and especially dont have near perfect coaching staff chemistry in every highschool in Texas... this coaching staff fits the school and the community

Don't get me wrong, a lot of coaches do a lot to help the players move on. But not all have the facilities to do it. I'm just saying don't leave it in the hands of the coaches. Take control of your own destiny. Don't be conceited or arogant. Stay in great shape. And, keep in mind your greatest opponent is injury. Best way to not get injured is to be in the best shape you can.

Not to add any pressure -- but the Nike camp is probably the single most important opportunity to impress and get on the radar of lots of d-1 programs at one time, including just about every progam in the state of Texas, every Big 12 program -- there are probably somewhere in the region of 50-75 d-1 programs represented at the combine -- including lots of head coaches -- their staffs, etc -- it is during an official NCAA evaluation period -- it is not uncommon for a wave of offers to go out following the camp. It is worth taking the month before to get prepared -- to do your best -- not just in the combine testing events, but also in the skills competition.

That's good information. From everything I've heard, if you're going to go to an event like this, you want to make sure there are coaches there from as many schools as possible.

First of all congratulations on the invite! Second, you and the other players on your team should shake your coach's hand and tell him/them how much you appreciate them doing this for you. Not all coaches and or ADs do this for their athletes, I know they should, but they don't. Get after it and good luck.

Hey congrat's on the invite, and I know everyone love's these camp's and everything but be careful going to these camp's, I know there is a ton of hype on them and yes they can help you but, they can also hurt you, by not putting up good number's or by not preforming as well, and yes you can sctrach your time's and all that but, remmeber coache's will be there watching how you perform, now im sure some people are like "duh" when I just said that but, I was invited to a few of these camp's and I didnt attend them, bc I felt that I play football much better than I do benching or running 40 yrd's. I was still recruited and got a scholarship, but just my opion, good luck though, make sure you go in confident.

I say go to the camps. Go to as many as you can. But.....and it's a big BUT! You better be ready! You've had a few of the posters tell you that if you go, then you better do well. This is fact! There will be a lot of coaches there and yes it's great exposure but if your times or lifts SUCK OUT LOUD then that's what the coaches are going to remember (if they remember you at all). If you have great game tape (because that's what is going to matter most) that shows you know how to play the game, then that's your best way to get their attention.
The camps will help a player that might have been missed or was out due to injury and wasn't able to show his stuff. Some players might have grown more and might not have caught a coaches eye due to size but now has put up 2-3 more inches and 20lbs. It a free evaluation for them.
So if you're going to go........then be at your best. If you're not.......then don't go.

D-1 coaches attend in droves and pay the Nike camp and others for copies of the results -- so, to say the camps are not important is not the case -- there is not a d-1 program in the country that does not have at least one coach or assistant assigned to the rivals, scout, etc sites checking daily (or more often) on players -- reading articles, camp results, watching video, message boards, etc -- to not take the camps seriously and be prepared is simply closing the door on a major opportunity -- if there is a time or result in any of the combine events you are not happy with -- be sure to tell a camp offical that you want the result scratched from their official results -- so really, there is not a risk in going and giving it your best shot --

I agree with most of what you are saying but the statement of "be sure to tell a camp offical that you want the result scratched from their official results -- so really, there is not a risk in going and giving it your best shot" is not correct. You can have them scratched but they see what you are and how you timed. The old saying is "if a dog is ugly and you put a bow on him, he's still ugly". The bow didn't make a difference. It will be the same in their minds if you time or lift badly. This will be a first impression for most of the athletes and first impressions are everlasting. Make it your best.

From my experience the combine portion of the Nike camp (bench, vertical, 40 and shuttle) are not widely viewed -- in fact, in many cases are off limits to anyone other than the campers -- 40 times are not broadcasted -- Without question, the single most imporatant cobmine result is the 40 time. You are right -- if you are injured or for some other reason don't feel you can put your best foot forward -- don't run -- but if you are simply considering not running out of fear of causing your stock to drop, then by all means run and scratch the time if you are not happy with it.
What coaches really gather to watch is the skills part of the camp -- and usually just wait to get the official Nike combine results part of the camp from Nike. The lineman vs lineman drills are fun to watch -- and the qb/receiver vs db drills are alot of fun too...

I'd listen to Brant. He's got a full ride to Big 12 Mizzou. Brant's dad understands this better than most. I've been talking to him a lot lately and he sure has helped me a lot. how the heck Brant was only 2nd string all-district this year is beyond me. He spent more time in the other teams' backfields than a lot of their backs seemed to.
I look forward to watching him play next year.

T J Johnson will definitely lead the pack among the DB's, I hope he can put together a good year and get him a D1 ride. He is a great kid without a lot of support except for his coaches and fellow players.
All of the old GISD schools have a lot of kids that if it were not for the coaches and teammates would have very litte.
