Ok guys...I've been working out a lot.....seems like I hit a number that I can't get over. Not my goal though. I'm a guy that likes to do things the "Natural Way"...good old fashioned running...cardio etc. I don't like taking supplements and stuff.....they scare me. As I get up in age...the metabolism isnt what it use to be. What's something good and cheap at GNC to assist with dropping weight? I still use weights to tone....but I just need to get over this hump.

I'm a "Crusierweight" right now.....want to get down to "Middleweight" or "Welterweight" if possible.....share your secrects and NO KTCARL, I'm not joining Curves with you!

About 30 mins of Cardio.....a mile run......I'm trying to watch what I eat.....but it's hard to do....I barley go over 1000 calories a day....I don't think that's healthy though.....try to avoid red meat......lots of water. I do what I can since I really don't have a schedule for a strict routine. I started the year at 200 even....goal is 185 but I'm stuck at 192-194.

I wish I could help...but I've been stuck for 15 years...6' 6"...200lbs...
I eat what I want and when I want...
I drink beers and Scotch...
I stopped working out when I left the military...
I tried the 'Super Size Me' diet when the movie came out...
Nothing...

One gallon or three litres of water per day helps. Not even a diabetic diet would require that low of a calorie intake for your size. To stop bad food cravings and a for a burst of energy try setting aside one meal per week that you can eat anything you want. Fer instance....Rib eye-baked tater wit everything-salad-dessert. And dessert has to be a real dessert.

I'm stuck at 174lbs (but don't care to gain or lose) yet my body fat is decreasing.

Body fat = 17%

I'm shooting for 12% which good for an old coot like me but not good enough for 6pak abs. That would be ridiculous work IMO.

When I work out I do 5 miles a day 5 days a week in about an hour which for me is a reasonable jog. It burns 800 calories a day. They say walk 10k steps every day and that is about right. Light weights 3 times a week.

There are several calorie counting programs on the web for free. When I am trying to loose I stay between 1500 and 1800 calories a day and felt full all the time. When was really trying to build, I would work up to 4000 calories a day but that was 3 years ago.

I only take a multi vitamin and one or two servings of protein after working out and between meals to keep the edge off. I drop weight fast on this regime.

Dada,

Don't focus as much on the weight. Focus on body fat %. Especially if your hitting the weights. If you're adding muscle, you're putting on weight as fast as you're taking it off. Don't know if that's what you're doing though. Get you a scale that measures body fat % though. As long as that's going down, you're good. As far as the diet, you're not taking in near enough calories. Hell, if you're doing weights and cardio, you could probably take in 2500 a day and still lose fat. Also, I like to stay away from too many carbs, especially things like sugar, white bread, potatoes, etc. Lots of lean meat and veggies for me. Snack on peanuts, cheese, nothing with sugar. And like ktCarl said, I have saturday as my "eat whatever I want" day.

That may be a big part of your problem. Starvation will actually down regulate thyroid function. Lower thyroid function decreases metabolism. Your body is trying to hold on to all the fat it can.

You need to eat enough (probably around 1500 minimum) to convince your body you are not starving so your thyroid will start working again.

SLC93
05-04-2010, 06:48 AM
To begin, you need to eat more, period. You're body is going to plateau as you progress through workouts so variety is your friend, too.

Second, as mentioned a few posts up, water is essential. Not only does it eliminate unnecessary calories and sugar fom other beverages, it's going to serve to better filter your system which has a huge effect of your metabolism. Also, you cannot underestimate the impact being hydrated will have on your workouts. They will improve and you will sweat that water out.

Lastly, if possible you need to increase the time and variety you have allocated to your cardio. If weight loss and tone is your goal removing 10-15 minutes from your lift time and putting it into cardio is the way to go. The rate at which we burn fat and calories, for most people, increases significantly after the 30 minute mark. Mix things up. One day do 40 minutes on cross country on the stair master. The next sprint 15 on the eliptical and walk at a max, uphill setting for 30 on the treadmill. Do the stepper for 20 and ride the bike for 30. The point is vareity in machine and setting is going to push your system harder and work different areas of the leg. You'll also find yourself getting more of an ab workout using the stepper and stair master.

After your cardio, don't mess around with your lifting. Get some water and go right to it. I hit my abs a for 5 -10 minutes after cardio and then lift. Don't waste time between sets and stations. Most lifts only require a 30-60 second recovery time. By keeping up your tempo you can better maintain the aerobic state the cardio put you in and continue a good calorie burn while you lift. plus, you don't become the poser that takes 5 minutes between sets and ties up a machine for 15 minutes. I do more in 2 hours than some of these behemoths do in 4. It's silly.

Good luck! Sounds like you're doing very well. Eat,though!

Right and you need to understand that if you're going to burn over 1,000 by the time you've completed your work out, you've left the body nothing to recover with. If you're burning 1000 per you need to be taking in closer to 2000, honestly.

Do it right with fruits, nuts, light meats and eat often in small portions using dinner as your real meal.

Also, a very simple multi vitamin every morning is not only good for you but it helps to work your metabolism to a peak rate, naturally.

No way a 192 lb man is burning 1000 calories doing what dada is doing.

1 10-min mile @ 190lbs = 145 calories
30 mins of running would be about 450 calories.
Light weights for 1 hour = 260 calories.

If dada is running 30 mins and lifting light weights for 1 hour, he's burning roughly 710 calories.

His BMR (calories burned in a day to survive) is about 1900 (I guessed on your age dada).

1900 + 710 (exercise) - 1000 (food) = 1610 calories burned in a day

3500 calories = 1 pound

Other posters are correct, though. Less you eat, the more your body will try an hold onto whatever you eat. And if you don't change up your cardio and lifting routine, you will experience diminishing returns. Basically, your body gets accustomed to the exercise and doesn't burn as many calories. My calculations are probably higher than what you actually burn since you've been doing it awhile.

Run, bicycle, pickup basketball, swim, jump rope, etc. Switch up your cardio and you'll see results.

I'd also eat closer to 1800-1900 calories. Think about that. Your body is already burning 1900 calories a day just to function. If you eat right at that amount, then any exercise you do will give you the calorie deficit you're looking for.

Eat 1900 cals a day
Burn 500 cals a day in exercise
1 week = 3500 cals = 1 pound lost

Good luck! I'm restarting my diet today. Gained way too much weight over the last year.

Wait...I have to give up my Shiner?

It really helps to not have the valueless calories. A couple a week probably won't hurt. I eat meat but I eat the leaner cuts. Also, I broke it down to three meals a day with small servings and two snacks. That way your body doesn't got into the the starvation mode and you keep your energy up. Wished you lived closer, I've been looking for a work out partner. This is something that really helped me. Having someone you work out with, that will show up every time and push each other to improve. Take it slow.

Now that you have started this thread, I am chastising myself for not getting back to my regular routine...dang it, dada! :) The reason I got off my routine is that I pushed to hard for my age and suffered an injury. Don't be in a big hurry and think of it as just another part of your daily routine. Soon you will look forward to it.

Chill is doing the six meals a day routine, eating lots of fish and lean deli meats. He stopped drinking soda every day (maybe has some sprite once or twice a week now). He's dropped a lot of weight (around 20 lbs) just by switching his diet from the standard three a day without really working out a ton aside from some running.

BTW, I can get by on 1000-1200 calories a day. I did so in 2008 during my diet. But I was taking vitamins, and seeing the doctor every week to make sure I wasn't doing myself any harm. 1000 a day on your own is pretty severe.

I started this morning getting back on the meal replacement shakes I used in 2008. I'll drink 3 servings for breakfast (300 cals), 3 for lunch (300 cals), add in some fruit snacks between and after (banana, apple, etc), and supper will be veggies/rice/lean meat like chicken, turkey or fish. I'm upping my water intake and cutting out sodas. Cutting out milk products for the most part and oils/fats (mayo, etc) will help me a lot.

I'm also thinking of starting P90X.

It really is mostly mental. Chill made the switch almost instantly once he decided he wanted to do it. He went to the store and bought all the stuff he would need for his new plan. Some people can do that.

I have not followed his lead. I'm a picky eater and not quite as motivated as chill. I eat three meals a day (always eat breakfast), but that's pretty much it. I don't do any significant snacks in between.

Watch out for these dang things, they can be loaded with calories. The secret to eating is to eat clean. Most trainers (my son is one in Austin) will tell you the secret to the calories is that they are clean and nutritious. Vegetables (lots), lean meats, brown rice (no white rice, bread, muffins, rolls because the are just like eating sugar), water, water and more water.

The three meals and two snacks that I ate did not include the protein drink right before or after a work out. If you use a protein drink be sure it has a good balance of protein and carbs. Good carbs help to absorb the protein and get them to the muscles.

Yep. The body is a weird machine. It starts to make sense when you think of it as a machine. That's what they all say you have to do to start running efficiently, whether you are trying to lose or gain weight.

From what I'm reading...I need to incorporate some protein drinks......what are some good ones? "You're not losing weight because you're not eating enough" just sounds weird.

Not eating enough causes your body to go into a starvation or reserve mode. It will only start targeting the fat when it feels it has enough of the other essential components to survive. Once it does it will target fat to burn and is much more efficient in doing so.

I like the ON Gold Standard 100 Whey protein in Chocolate. I mix it with fat free milk or water. If I am going to the gym I will have some before leaving the house and then right after the work out. I throw a couple of ice cubes in the mix I am taking to the gym with me so that it is cool when I drink it.

It can get a little expensive but it works well and gets alot of clean protein and carbs in you at just the time your body needs it to trigger fat burn instead of muscle. The more muscle you add the more efficient your body becomes at burning fat.

GNC is probally on of the more exspensive places to buy protein. You can get on line. There is a place next door to the 24 hour fitness on Mason that is great and reasonable priced. That's where I buy mine but that is because it's only 5 blocks from my home.

Agreed, which is why I suggested increasing his cardio by varying ratesof 10-20 minutes. As with anythin it depends on where you are in your conditioning but I can burn between 800-1000 in 45 minutes depending on what machine I'm using and the setting. Stair master and stepper are beasts for calorie burn.

I hate those things but you are exactly right...and vary it up so the body doesn't adapt makes all the difference! Thirty minutes on a stair master, shifting speeds between 5 and 8 every 2 minutes is a killer for me. Then hit the treadmill for a run...you will burn some calories.

I was back in the gym for a year before I braved the stair master and stepper. I love them now but I do not do them exclusively. I can tell you that they really melt the last bit of a love handle.:D

I've got an ankle that can go gimp on me so I never run on the treadmill. I'll put it on the max incline setting and walk between 4.0 and 4.3 miles per hour. That's a purdy decent burn and is good for about 500 calories in a half hour, for me.

Actually your way may be better than the jogging I do on the treadmill. I read an article some weeks ago that said that differenet people are built to walk or run. I'm one of those that have a hard time walking fast but can do a slow jog all day if needed. If frustrates my wife to no end. I can be out of the gym for a year and go and jog five miles the first day but have a difficult time with walking the same distance.

It's my knee that gets me. My husband and I have started walking a hour or slightly more 4-5 days a week before work. After just 2 weeks I can tell improvement, not so much weight just overall how I feel. If I do the treadmill I usually do a varied incline (I get bored quickly :D) at about a 4 mph pace.

If that is what works for you, then you should. I can't run because it feels like someone is stabbing me in the knee. I can walk with no trouble, and putting it on an incline really works your gluteals. I like to vary how much incline so I work different muscle groups.

I like SLC93's suggestion. Inclined treadmill and elliptical. Dial up the resistance on the elliptical and it will give you a heck of a workout with no joint impact at all.

I don't know what you do as far as mph, setting and level. I also only know the available setting for the treadmills at my gym. When I hit the treadmill I put it on a manual setting with a 15.0 incline and set the speed at 4.0 mph, increasing it by .1 every 10 minutes. I prefer the manual setting because it is the only one that lets me set the incline at max for the duration of my time. Seems like all the other settings want to continually adjust my incline.

I like this because you get a great calorie burn, it really works your lower body better than running and is very little stress of your joints. If you want to run, hit the eliptical. It's zero impact, better form and you're pumping rour arms with every stride.

Just my opinions and experience. I am no expert.
