About time..... ;)

Construction for Allen's new 18,000-seat high school football stadium is expected to begin this September. And by the looks of it, it's going to be a state-of-the-art facility that will be the envy of Class 5A programs from the Dallas-Fort Worth and beyond.
In May 2009, voters approved a $119.4 million bond proposal for a new auditorium at Allen High School, new multipurpose stadium and a new service center for maintenance, student nutrition and transportation.

it will never have the atomoshere like the double-wide had with it seating 18,000.They will come out the first year but what about after that?
they should pay it off pretty quick if they open it up for playoffs. 18,000 will be able to play into the 4th and 5th rds with aa stadium that big; only problem is allen is really away from it all.

I'm glad they're finally getting it. It should be very attractive as a neutral playoff site...that equates into additional $$$ revenue.
If it were left up to me I would scrap all those trees and just create more parking. And without all that "beautification" clutter the lot itself could be used for more things in the off season. They have sportscar rallys and motorcycle safety courses at Pennington all the time.

50 million dollar stadium/complex and you still have 6,000 endzone seats and from the look of it not that many rows of seats. Just like the old dump.
What is so wrong of having the seats between the endzones and not beind it.
Why not make the endzone grass and build the 18,000 seats between the endzones and if needed open up the grass during big games.

Just like the double wide they wanted to keep all the students in the endzone. Something pretty special about that. Plus the enclosed endzone will keep some of the noise level in the place. With the students at one end and the band at another, one can't escape some level of noise wherever you are at on the field. I have a 10 page site plan if anyone wants to look at more details. It's gonna be a special place on Friday nights!

They aren't there. To the right of the indoor practice buliding is just
some of that good ol' brown Texas grass this time of year. . . . and two

ALLEN ISD just signed a contract with the new
caterer for the new stadium. It was a drawn out,
very competitive process. However the winner was
thrilled to get the contract. She said right off the bat that
the folks from Longview would be thrilled with the new menu
at the new house. She said they were accustomed to her
style of cooking.

No, they need at least 10,000 seats for just the band parents!
Now, when we built our 11,000 seat stadium in Mansfield, THAT was too much. I think the biggest crowd ever was the Summit/Mansfield game a couple of years ago and that only had 8,000.

School districts make some money off playoff games. They keep all parking revenue, they keep a portion of the gate and concessions I believe. It's not a ton of money but its not a philanthropic venture.

It is a beautiful place and I'm sure it fits the needs of those who pay for it. Playoff games without the Eagles, if open for them, could get a little rough if up to 17-20 thousand show up. I can see a lot of fan problems if two teams like SLC and ET show up. More fights in the end zones than on the field.:)

The stadium is suppose to be budgeted for 59 Million. From what I have heard though . . . . it should be coming in at less than that. It is actually a good time to be buliding.

I was previously critical because of so many endzone seats but I was basing that on the picture in the first post. One of the news channels showed a different view in which the upper deck can be seen on the home side.
I've had time to view the Stadium Update (http://www.allenisd.org/20061061015583133/lib/20061061015583133/Bond%20Project%20Artwork-Files/Stadium%20Update.pdf) package and see the view the news used, field level, and the sections view.
I still think the 18000 seats could have been allocated with more sideline seats and less lowlevel/endzone seats. I think it's a shame that the student seats are all in the endzone.
I have changed on the envy factor though. It's a very nice facility.

They are adding ~1,500 parking spaces mostly around the east and north of where the new stadium will be. that should make for lots of spaces for the visitors to park and quick close access into the stadium. Total parking spaces will be 4,500 including all the current spaces at the High School.
They also have advanced planned the exits and quick routes back to the highway. They talked about contraflow before and after the game to help with that.
It will be great. I promise!!;)

Serious question.......will this turn out as "buyer's regret"....I know at the time of the state title.......everyone was "in the momement" and 18,000 sounded good......but when you're getting what 8-10,000 a game what will happen? To be honest.....I don't know what Allen's average attendance is....but will EVERY game be 18K?
At one time Berry Center was a good idea....but I think I've only seen it to capacity once.
Don't get me wrong....the stadium is awesome from what i've seen.....but the 18k makes me scratch my head.

They were originally talking 20K. The 18K is peak capacity usage for sure. There should be maybe 2-3 games during the year that it will be close to or at max capacity. When I go back through the years I can remeber which games that would have been.
There will be many games that will be half full. I am sure when that happens there will be folks crying and moaning and complaining. They always come out. There may even be years when the team is down and attendance will drop along with it.
All I can tell you is I will be there no matter what yelling and screaming for the Eagles!!

I don't see many sellouts anywhere but your point is well made. Can they get 80% - 14,400?
Allen is big - double the size of other 5A schools. If the Katy or Cypress-Fairbanks school districts cut out half of their high schools how big of stadiums would they need?

Sure, we have had 14,400 multiple times in the last few years at home abd probably more than that at several Games down in Plano at Clark.
At 5049 Allen is about the size of Katy and Katy Taylor combined. If Cypress cut out half their schools, Man! That would make 5 high schools with over 5800 kids in each of them. Plano can't even match those numbers. I think they would need at least an 18K seat stadium or two!!:D

.....but the 18k makes me scratch my head.
It's simple, Allen paid $55M for an extensive market analysis that determined "17,500" was a critical factor for their athletic recruiting campaigns.
Then, they paid another $58M for a subsequent "better" report that said "18,000" was correct number, so they had to add the end-zone seats.
The good news is, it all going to be paid for through a toll-tag system being installed in Longview, and by adding $4.00 to the price of school milk in Southlake.

It's the Allen curse. We just have a hard time not sticking with our "Humble". I think when Plano finds their Humble, they will start winning again.

OK little boy, Using Dude to address me is really funny. Tell me a stadium nicer than Clark since the renovation? None. Don't say Kimbrough either. Its nice however any stadium with a track around and a small vistors side does not compute. Now go get your shine box!!;)
Whoa now, We like Clark. It's just, feels like Home!! :D

You do know schools make next to nothing for playoff games? Certainly not enough for pay off a stadium.
You are dead wrong on this. I work in the purchasing dept for HEB ISD and my mother is in the accounting office. You'd be REALLY surprised at the revenue Pennington field makes on each playoff game.
They make enough to not keep any of the parking fees. They charge $2 to park and then use the money to make personalized name plates for all the lockers for both teams. they make a killing on concessions and rent.

P.S. Did you see the story on channel 8 tonight about the 100,000 sq ft. Cabellas possibly coming to Allen? I'm sure our forward thinking attitude had nothing to do with that. ;)

This will happen at some point....I am trying to imagine the next Cathederal to HS Football that will be built, what it will look like and where will it be? Denton has a nice palace, Mansfield has a nice palace, Houston? San Antone? Austin area?

They may put the bands in the end zone seating...leaving all the other seats for the fans.

Students have their own section in one end zone - in a fashion similar to many colleges - to create a wall of sound. The band - the largest in the country with more than 600 members - will be on the other end. There will be a wall of honor for former greats from the program.

They may. Bricks and mortar can't be changed easily but a seating plan can. I based my comment on the slide showing the seating plan in the Stadium Update package.

Too bad Keller doesn't have that vision for THEIR kids.:(
Can't agree with you here. Keller High is the only high school in Keller. The other three in the district are in Fort Worth.
To be correct you should have written "Too bad Fort Worth doesn't have that vision for THEIR kids."
If Keller was a one high school district, then they could spend for their one Keller high school.
Tough to convince Keller voters to support a new stadium used by Fort Worth kids 100% of the time, or a renovated stadium used by Fort Worth kids 75% of the time.
Much easier to operate from a one school district.
VERY nice looking stadium Allen! Might replace my current favorites of Mansfield and Aledo.

BigDaddy is right - they originally were looking at 20K seating, but rolled it back to 18K. Students are located in the end zone to help maintain the feel and sense of intimidation that you find at the current Eagle Stadium. IF you have ever gone to an Eagle game in Allen - you'll see the football team run out of the tunnel and down to the student section. It is pretty cool to see that happen and witness the energy that builds from the team feeding off the student section. The end zone student section is LOUD. Couple this with the million man band and you have a pretty intimidating place to play football. Wasn't it the Dallas Morning News that rated it as one of the MOST INTIMIDATING in the Metroplex? The planners for the new stadium did not want to lose site of that.
So why 18K? They currently sell 2500 season tickets (same as our Lovejoy neighbors who are 3A). With the demand for season tickets (people camp out over night to get the limited 200 or so that open up each year because people hold on to these tickets LOOONGGG after their kiddos graduate) - they could probably sell a total of 5-7K season tickets. Additionally, because the season tickets are sold out AND anyone wanting to go to the game with general admission tickets must sit in the temporary bleachers or on the visitors side, MANY people choose NOT to go to the home game. They do travel to attend the games in Plano, Rockwall, etc. because they can actually get a decent seat and they have a chance to see the game. Have you ever noticed how MANY ALLEN FANS travel to see away games? I'm glad that more people will finally have a chance to see a home game!
I have lived in Allen and have gone to high school football games since 1996... there has been a high demand from the time I moved here and the demand continues.... Can't wait until opening season 2012!

Thanks. I guess we will find out tonight what we are going to do. The school board has its set this evening for a special meeting and one of the items on the agenda is the new scoreboard.
Glad to know that the cost of your new digs is way down. I was concerned that you guys were sort of getting ripped off on the price, as we discussed just after the initial announcement was made. Then I read where UNT was paying about $70m to $75m and getting a 35,000 seat place and that reminded me of the price you were paying, so I thought I would check. Thanks again.

I hope this stadium isn't what's to come for all 5A future stadiums. It's too expensive. KISD needs another stadium so we can get back to having Friday night football so I hope a new stadium down here isn't any bigger and better than Rhodes.

I don't think that is the case at all. Lewisville has just built their 5th stadium. It's simple, ugly and definitely not a jewel. I would think Katy might add something nicer than Rhodes but not by much. THat is if they do build a new stadium

Congrats Allen!
Looks beautiful, and much needed!
In my opinion, building a stadium like this is a genius move from a business and local politics standpoint. I know Pennington Stadium (Where Euless Trinity and L.D. Bell plays) makes some good money for the area. It seems every time I drive by there, there is something going on. Even the parking lot is utilized for Motorcycle safety courses, remote control car tournaments, etc. The local businesses benefit.
We need to remember the amount of students, and the size of the of the band at Allen. Look at what that stadium in Frisco is doing! That place seems to get used for all kinds of things.
In this economy, Like someone said; Construction costs are low, and people are looking for cheaper entertainment. Also, Texas High Football is increasing in popularity like crazy. I'm sure the new stadium will attract a lot of different type of events as well. I don't know why more cities don't build something like this? Or even multiple cities getting together to build one.
