The Republic of Texas is the best hamburger i've ever had in that dirty city. they have texas flag umbrellas on all the tables outside so they're easy to spot. there is a mexican place pretty much right next door but i can't recall the name, they have mariachi outside alot. really good food. do not under any circumstances go to Dick's last resort. by far the worst steak i have ever eaten

Rio Rio? Blah. Absolutely terrible service along and the food wasn't much better. It paled in comparison with Casa Rio and Mi Tierra.
We complained and got free margaritas the next night though. :D

Mi Tierra is a place at the Market, right? If so I went there with my Trinity fans who still love me so that place is a no. Not that great. I want a place with some damn good Mexican food, good margaritas and reasonably priced. It's not my goal but I do expect to gain about 40 lbs here. So bring it on:D

I gave you a lot of good places to eat earlier.
Stay away from places on the Riverwalk, unless you just want to eat on the Riverwalk. It's touristy and not that good. The only people that ever think its good are those not from the area.
I told you to have Okt0ber take you to Chacho's one night.
Fiesta starts this weekend. Check out their site. They may have some events that interest you.

I saw in this thread that Mi Terra was also suggested, give that one a try as well!
What part of San Antonio are you staying in??

Gotta hit Tip Top for Chicken Fried Steak. Bring cash (no CC). Seriously good, and about ten minutes from NSM. Onion Rings rock too.

I like eating at Pappasito's on I-10 West heading towards Fiesta Texas.
There's a place down there that has a pizza that weighs over 40 pounds. It's something like 40 something inches diameter.
I like Goomba's Pizza and it's on the other side of 410 from North Star.
There are a few Chinese places I like and a Korean joint, too. I'll give you more info if any of those appeal to you.

Pappasito's is okay, but waaay overpriced. If you are going there, stop at the resturant just before, named the County Line. Ribs that will make you slap your mother in law.

:D
Mamacitas? Whirled Peas for sauce? The owner is a Super hard working fella from right here in Kerrpatch, but his stuff is like Pappsitos. Nice enough guy, but Too dang expensive, for what you get.
If you are going to throw Chachos out there (and LaFogata for that matter, I don't care WHAT time it is), then I can throw out Alamo cafe. There are better places for rice, but the Fajitas, CFS, queso and tortillas are pretty smack daddy.
And, yes, the Okie from Las Palapas at 2:00 in the morning, is only trumped by the dinner number 2 (or Barbacoa tacos) at Don Pedros AT 2:00 in the morning, IF you happen to be on SW Military drive at that hour.

Chacho's is good when you just want to hang out with friends, eat, and have some margaritas. They pile up so much food that you can just order 1 plate of Nachos and share it with everyone. They have kaoroke (sp?), and I know farmer is just dying to get up there.
Alamo Cafe? Really? That's the low of the low.

Alamo SUCKED, during it's short stint in Dallas. I'm telling you though, try the Queso. THE best. The salsa was voted best in SA a time or three. The tortillas are good too.
Chachos is the place to hang out with a Margarita. IF it is still there, Pico de Gallo, across 35 from El Mercado has a good Margarita also.
La Fogata IS good. No argument there.

Ok. I should have seen the Enchiladas Mexicanas part. I went to Los Barrios last night and had a puffy taco with the Nachos Butler. Not my favorite. La Fogata still the best I have had so far. I had lunch at Fattys Burger yesterday and the Checker Diner on Perrin Bitel(sp) the last two days. Fattys was really good but was not impressed with the Checker Diner.
Tonight I think I am going to try to hit up County Line.
How far is Kaspeers and Chris Madrids from Los Barrios on Blanco?
Heed the advice of SV61 about the Tip Top. Fredricksburg road. Chicken fried steak.

Sea Island has reasonable prices and good seafood. Behind North Star Mall. Get the seafood platter. Good steak, pricey @ Ruth Crist. Down jones-maltsberger. My son said you can go CW dancing at Cowboys.

I drove past Alamo Stadium on my way there and didn't realize that thing was so close to 281. Dang that op rows behind one endzone are literally over the right lane on 281 going into Downtown.
I think I will go back and walk the campus of Trinity and Incarnate Word. They both looked like nice campuses. I did see 2 girls getting in their BMW while at the restaurant and they were both Trinity students, or that is what the shirts said and the sticker on the car said. Must be nice :D

Yeah, you drive right by Alamo Stadium off 281. There is this high rise condo building right next to Alamo Stadium and people will sit on their balconies and watch games.

I remember the first time I walked into Alamo Stadium I was like "WOW!!" I believe it was a 1997 area playoff game between Victoria and Brownsville Rivera.
I was just a poor kid from Victoria. The only stadiums I had seen at that time were Memorial Stadium in Victoria and Buc Stadium in Corpus LOL
I still love that stadium.

It looks like an old Stadium and I like those. I love the light towers they have their too. That was the site of the FM Marcus state title game in '95 when Roosevelt shut them down. I believe it is still the largest HS stadium in the state

It is. The last time I was there they had just put in new turf. It has the light green, dark green type of turf with the color alternating every 5 yards. The teams that play there are god awful. Players hated playing there because of the concrete below the playing surface.

The Chili Bowl was fun!! Even if it was inner city SAISD Fox Tech and Lanier. I'm sad that FT no longer plays football because that ended a LONG history between the 2 schools.
Okt0ber and I would go to the Chili Bowl and that stadium was FILLED. The people around us were always nice and there were people there with their entire family for several generations. This one lady introduced us to her family by name and year of graduation LOL

I hear ya with the turf. Those old stadiums seemed to have that problem. The different shad of green every 5 yards is a cool look. Oregon and Penn State pull that off I believe.
Where is John T Flores Country Store? James McMurtry is playing there next Friday and I am tempted to go check that out

When I used to play there the field was grass, but that was when dinosaurs still roamed the earth. :D

Flores is in Helotes out Bandera road. It is west, northwest of town but not very far. From where you are, you can just go west on loop 410 until you hit Bandera Road and go west from there. Flores is right on the road once you get to Helotes.
If you have never been to Flores, you need to go. Its almost an urban setting now but still old fashion enough. All the REAL country singers have played there.

I will be back that's for sure. The food at La Fogata was better IMO, not by much but better but the atmosphere at Josephine Street was top notch. God bless those ladies in there :D
I am jealous of FF. Enjoy the rest of your trip. I second the recommendation about TipTop and would also sneak into Alamo stadium.

I think Ratliff is many years from replacing their turf but I hope they consider the different shades thing the next time. I'd like to see a pre district Judson/ Permian game at the Alamo.
