The Panther fans should enjoy the pic I just updated on the home page. Hopefully, Claybon is healing up well and will be ready to go full speed in the spring. I was really impressed with him against Cove.
Special thanks to the good folks at www.lufkinpanthersports.com for the photo. Very well done site.

Unless Jeremey has changed his name to Michael and now plays WR for Katy, I don't think he's on the front page just yet.

Thanks KT - I believe Jeremy is doing well though I haven't seen him in a few weeks. Looking forward to spring practices.

When he went out of the Cove game, I was sitting there thinking, Cove now has the chance they need. Horrible to say it, but I was thinking it.
Then the back up kid came in and his speed was just as good as the starters. Once he had a series or two under his belt, he did an admirable job of filling in.
Lufkin should be fun to watch this season.

I was thinking a similar thing when the Claybon injured but i was sick. I had said all year that Lufkin would be in BIG trouble if Claybon went down because they did not have a true backup qb. I knew that was the one guy Lufkin could not afford to lose. Like you said though, Thomas did a very admirable job filling in considering he hardly had a snap all year. He was a starting wr (2nd best). He did the best he could do in the SLC game but that was a mission impossible task. You need to be healthy in all of your key position's to have a legit shot vs SLC.

One thing I saw with Claybon last year was he got better every time I saw the Panthers play. My heart sunk into my stomach when he got hurt. Not so much for the team, but for a kid who looked average at the beginning of the season and worked his a** off , he had become a very dangerous weapon. He was taking over that game until the injury. The only gratifying thing was that he had one more year. I wish him the best this year.

I attended the Cove v. Lufkin playoff game...Claybon demonstrated awareness and confidence in a difficult situation.

Claybon never looked average to me at the beginning of season. You could see the skills and unlimited potential back then. Well in my opinion. Yes he got much better at reading defenses and scrambling, and in my opinion was an excellent qb by the end of the season. His numbers prove that. If he stays healthy and continues to work hard then the sky is the limit for him. It does not hurt that he has 2 Big time wr's in Bryant and Thomas either. Not to mention a stud rb in Turner along with the most hyped player in Lufkin since Reggie in sophomore rbTrevon Lews Oh yeah, they return all 5 starters from a very good o-line. The offense should be very fun to watch next season. Lufkin always has a very solid defense so i am not worried about the number of returners there. Everything is in place on paper but that does not mean crap. you have to get it done on the field.

Amen Brotha. Being from Longview I can attest to that.

I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want Cove to get back in the game because of an injury. To win a game because one key player was injured, would not have made me happy, either.
I believe the better team won that night, and Cove did a hell of a job.

They sure did. I loved seeing such great fan support too. That was an exciting game for sure. Too bad we couldn't have met up this year. Heck even a non-district game would have been great. Good luck to you all this year in 4A. By the way, do you guys ever hear from the infamous trooper82?

Cove's fan support this year has been the best in 3 or 4 years. I remember I would be at the games and the band wouldn't play, you could barely hear the cheerleaders, we barely got into it.
This year everyone was getting into it. The band finally played to pump up the crowd. The student section had their buckets and cowbells. The crowd was barking. We even had a kid that did the wave, now that was cool. The last time we had that much excitement was when Duff and all the others were there. The year after was good too, and maybe class of 2002. After that it was boring.
I think some cove fans would agree.

he is doing ok... i see him almost everyday coming from the new training / practice building. He has developed even more since the last game. I was on the sideline commenting on the play for the radio and I noticed that he was not getting up fast like he usually does. I had a bad feeling but I didn't think he had broken his arm. The coaches and doctors wanted him to stay in the locker room but he told me he had to be with the team. That sparked additional life into the Panthers and he gave great advice and support to Thomas.
Can't wait...

No, not totally. Lufkin will have about 7 guys back on defense with a great deal of varsity and playoff experience. There are also a great group of JV players moving up that will add to the current varsity talent and add some depth that Lufkin did not have in a couple of spots last year. The linebacker spots will be key.

lufkins offense will be good next year probaly great the only thing holding them back is a sub par o line they got all the speed and power and quickness any offense needs, and isnt number 7 coming back penson rights? damn he was fast and strong i gave it to him though, did the defensive tackles graduate because they were good players the only player yall need to replace is mandela i know there will somebody ready to replace that cornberback he was overated anyways.

Well, you might want to give our O-line a break, they were all inexperienced juniors in 2005, they will be better in '06. Also I would not catagorize Leonard Hewitt as an overrated DB. He was a 1st team all -state corner in 2004 but completely tore his ACL in the Pfluggerville playoff game. He played last year at about 80% of what he once was and by playoff time it was about 70%, he was playing hurt. Some of it was his own fault, because he did not rehab his knee according to the Lufkin team doctors schedule but to his own standards and it did not work for him.
A.J. Penson will be back on defense, along with Randall Murphy at the DT postion. Lufkin will have about 7 defensive players returning with exstensive playing time last season. Mandella Roberts will be a tough one to replace, but I think Cameron "CAM" Davis will prove to be an outstanding replacement at MLB for Lufkin.
It will interesting to see which new faces step up to play in 2006. We are blessed to have talented kids here that travel through a very good youth football program in Lufkin and into a one middle school and one high school system in Lufkin. Never mind that our middle school is the largest in Texas.
Fantastic community and booster support is also a key ingredient here.
They run the same system from the 7-12 grades and we have a great group of coaches that develope these kids so that when they reach high school, those coaches know the talent they have to work with.
Coach Outlaw and his coaching staff are some of the best at getting the most out of the talent we have here in Lufkin.

Hewitt and overrated do not belong in the same sentence. He can play the game..I hope he can get healthy for the next level, if so, we will absolutely see him on Sundays..

DRGNBKR is right Hewitt can play with anyone. As stated he was not 100% because he did not do what he should have, then in the play-offs he had a goin injury on top of that. If he will commit himself to working out he will be a great player.Any player that play with a torn ACL and against SLC and had a pick is ok in my book, shows heart.

Hewitt was the best cb i have ever seen at the hs level when he was 100 percent for most of 2004. Period!! He was still a very good corner in 2005 but he was not great. He lost of couple of steps last year. A complete tear in your knee will do that. Hopefully he can get back to 100 percent in college? The guy was special and was far far from underrated? How can you lead the state in interceptions and be underrated? Truely a dumb statement? The offensive line will not be a weak spot next year it will be a strength. All 5 coming back from a line that gelled by the end of the year. They were a very solid o-line at the end. They will be much better next year. The offense will be very very tough to stop.
