View Full Version : The Pacific
Anyone catch it? Stayed up way late last night, and watched the first episode. A bitslow, but you have to define the characters I think.
Seems like it has the chance to be a great show.

I did. Loved Band of Brothers. Especially those first two episodes in gearing up for the invasion and showing how they became "brothers". It was a bit slow in parts but the intensity definitely picked up in others. I am looking forward to next week and following weeks

Sunday nights on HBO.
It is about The Pacific theatre in WW2. It is like Band of Brothers but instead of focusing on the Army this one is about the Marines. Last nights episdoe started off in Guadacanal and I am interested to see how they focus on the other atolls. Tarawa was a very bloddy battle for our Marines as was every battle in that theatre. Lots of promise to the sho though

I'm anxious to see the Navy in a good light. We really did and do have an important role in the Pacific. Lot's of untold stories there to.

the review i read (it's personal, so this may not be the case for everybody) said that the pacific is different from band of brothers and there definitely is not as much bonding between the soldiers. the guy cited the fact that there were far too many deaths among the corps and in the movie for there to be bonding like in band of brothers...the guy also said to take this show with an open mind and DON'T compare it to B.O.B because of the differences (he gave the show 4 of 4 stars btw). so a heads up to everybody...i'm a gigantic fan of brothers, so i can't wait to see the pacific whenever i get around to it.

I'd say that's a pretty accurate write up and one of the things my mom and I were talking about last night after we watched the first episode. The Pacific just an entire different theatre than the European one. The attitudes of the Japanese was almost a complete opposite of what was encountered in Europe. Make no mistake, they were both bloody theatres and every single man and woman who contributed to that cause is a hero.

I have not. I was in DC back in the summer of '04 right as the WW2 memorial was being complete. That was pretty impressive but that's about the extent of what I have seen. I have always wanted to go to the WW1 museum up in Kansas City

Lot's of interesting stuff on Oahu with Pearl, Hickham Field, Schoffield Barracks, etc. I wish I could afford to visit Wake, Iwo and some of the other Islands.

I watched it and really liked it. The Pacific Theater, the Marines, and Navy have long beed due a good treatment of their story. I expect it to be excellent, like everything HBO does.
Side note, I finally got around to watching John Adams, and was pretty much sucked right in.

I have not seen the Pacific because we do not have HBO. I will order it when it comes out on DVD because most everyone is giving it great reviews. I did order HBO when John Adams came out and loved it. I ordered the DVD of it. I love Abigail Adams. Quit a woman.

Difficult for me to agree with that considering Real Time with Bill Maher and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel/ Mary Carillo are on HBO.

I have seen both of them (The Thin Red Line is one of my favorite moves, but Sands of Iwo Jima is superior in every way as a movie to Flags of Our Fathers). But you can only do so much in a two hour feature move.

Should specify their movies/miniseries. They are excellent usually better than major studio products.
