A U.S. employee of the Ciudad Juarez Consulate and her husband were gunned down in their car, in front of their young daughter, after leaving a consulate social event. In another part of the city, a Mexican staffer was killed after being followed from the same event. State is authorizing families to leave border consulate postings. This comes on the heels of the closing of the Reynosa consulate.
Things are getting wooly out there. Killing foreign diplomats has not been SOP for drug cartels. Many, many prayers to the consulate community and the families of the victims.

It saddens me greatly to see what has happened to El Paso and Juarez. They used to be true sister cities.

I don't remember it, but when I lived there as a baby my parents would take me shopping over there because everything was so much cheaper. We used to go to the dog races every month too.

It was nothing to go shopping or go over for dinner. The dog races were fun. And of course the weekend parties, that some moms still don't know about.
We didn't think twice about just driving over during the day or in the early evening. The late night stuff could be dangerous, but if you had money or knew who to call it was all ok. Nothing like now. We went back and forth at ease. In fact at the bridge they would only ask what country and we said America and went past. No Id's or anything.

Except they traffic much much more than marijuana.
I talked with an old friend and she said Jag you have no idea how bad it is. She thinks it is only a matter of time before it really spills over into the US.

In 1947 one of my step dads, my mom and I would walk across the bridge to eat. The Rio had a little water flow beneath it then and Mexican kids would get in the water under the bridge and people would throw change to them. Mom would let me go down to near waters edge and she would throw coins at me. Whatever I caught or picked up I would then give to the xylophone player in the club where we ate. Guess you can't do that any more.

I remember in my younger more adventurous days going over to Juarez to party. You could see them selling coke and pot on street corners and in the bars. I guess all the civilities of those days are gone. And no we did not buy but knew what was going on it was right there in front of you.
