Why does everyone think the Garland schools are so great in football. Since Joe Martin left Garland the number of playoff wins by all Garland schools is 2. 2 wins in the last 6 years. Why can't they win more than that with all of those athletes? Just wondering. A buddy of mind always talks about how many athletes the Garland Owls have and they never do anything with them.

Look who they have to play...

They've gone heads up againist Longview, Lee, and Lufkin for a while and now they still have to put up with Longview and Lee plus the Mesquite schools...

Atleast this is what has happened since '02

I wish we could go back to playing Allen in the first round :p Those East Texas teams are the biggest challenge to have to face early in the playoffs.

No doubt about it, we have a some good schools, but when you play Tyler Lee and Longview in the first round (or Lufkin in the past) life isnt too easy in the first round of the playoffs. It might sound like we're complaining but you try to play the state champs in the first round, not too fair really. Im not trying to be a homer here, but there were a lot of schools in Texas last year in the second round that werent as good as Garland. But theyre playing Samuel in the first round instead of Tyler Lee. And yes, we have a TON of talent come out of this district every single year. Garland alone has sent I think 88 players in the last 10 years or so to college. South dishes 'em out too. We have talent over here but there are some teams in East Texas who dont do too bad theirselves.

Because their talent is there, its just the luck of their first round match up. Kinda like before the south Austin schools got moved to region 2, they had the luck of hte draw from the 3rd round on.

I agree with you that Garland is better than most teams in 2nd round playoff because they had to play us and that was tough.

Plus, with GISD being its own district, all the talent gets pretty well split (each school usually has at least 1 very talented player), meaning the district kinda collapses on itself, because of internal strife...If there was a district vs. district championship, i think GISD would be a top runner.

Yea, the talent gets split between 2 maybe 3 schools. And those are the same 3 schools that go to the playoffs every year. Yes, Lakeview and Rowlett have a couple good players every year (Jared Norton, the Dockery brothers) but Garland, South, and North have loads more talent than the others.

oh please do not start the split school argument again big city schools. ;) all 3 garland schools still probably have at least over a thousand more in enrollment then lufkin, longview, john tyler, and maybe even tyler lee. not to mention that longview, and tyler have to split up also because of the size of their town. just on example, i think garland has well over 3,300 students while john tyler has about 1,900 maybe?? lufkin has like 2,200.

Actually, GHS's enrollment is right at 2500-2600, which isn't small, but definately isn't all that big for a 5A program. The Plano highschools have an enrollment of over 4000.

LoboFan07

GHS is still bigger than all 4 5A Programs in East Texas I believe.

If not, you're only a few people behind Tyler Lee.

Longview doesn't complain about it with Spring Hill and Pine Tree schools in the same city. They have some talent every year.

No one's complaining - the question was asked...

Garland ISD is well regarded because they have great talent and coaching, and because they've had some winning programs. They have not done as well in the playoffs as some have expected. They play top notch competition, but they need to beat them. Garland has been among the top teams in the metroplex for about 12 years because they always have great regular season records. They need to start mixing in some playoff wins or they might fall off of the radar statewide...

i was wrong on the enrollments with garland.

according to dc magazine garland has a 2,385 enrollment and south garland has a 2,262 enrollment

lufkin has 2,218 longview 2,162 tyler lee has the biggest at 2,563 and john tyler the smallest of the et schools with 1,976 amazing jt has almost 600 less students then tyler lee!!

so garland has about 150 more then lufkin not over 1,000. they still have more though and you get my point. lufkin and longview are almost always identical in enrollment.

the biggest enrollment in 5a is plano east at 5,221.58 the woodlands at 4,918 judson at 4,864 la joya at 4,814 plano at 4,706.87 vic memorial, spring westfield, alief elsik, dallas skyline are all in the low 4,000's

Do you know why 600 less students than Tyler Lee? because alot of black students come to Tyler Lee for better education and very good teachers.

they should not have a choice considering you should have to go to school where you live at. i have heard of the odd minority rule tyler has where a kid can go to a school where they are a minority regardless of where they live. in other words a black guy or girl could go to tyler lee and a white guy or girl could go to john tyler no matter where they live in tyler.

Yep your right and I heard that next year they can't do that anymore due to Tyler Lee overcrowding and bathrooms getting worst and textbooks getting cost more.

Bathrooms are getting nasty and thats what school newspaper said and actually I heard people say that JT is pretty nasty and its built in the 1980s and our school was built in 1960s and its still more cleaner.

the bathroom's are getting worse but the football team keeps getting better. sounds like a fair trade. they might want to keep that rule. :)

garlind is easily the most "ghetto" (sorry if I offended anyone, just tell me and I'll quit saying that) of the Garland ISD schools...the ceiling tiles in the math hall lift up, when it's windy, but there are no open windows (if you've seen wid in a classroom with open windows, you know what I'm talking about, the tiles lift up and make a funny noise). In some places, the ceiling leaks, even when its not raining. I have some hope thouggh cause we're getting a new audotorium and a new building (we're tearing down memorial tennis courts to make more room for parking...how sad is that?)

THere may be worst, but we do have a right to cmplain being that our school has the brightest kids in the district (or at least thats what they tell us... ;) )

yeah thanks man lol
we have to travel a mile off campus just to get to our athletic complex, which means driving to the stadium, and the likelihood of being pulled over
...
not saying that i have been =)
but our football, softball, baseball, track/field have to go off campus, plus next year tennis is gonna have to go off campus, not to mention swimming has to go to a complete other DISTRICT to practice...glad im not on swimteam
anywho, the point of this being, garland has ABSOLUTELY no room for expansion, let alone 10 acres

i wish we could have a nice big field in the middle of downtown garland

Garland might be the most ghetto of all the GISD schools... but look at the dates they were all built.

Garland- 1900's
South-1960's
North-1970's
Lakeview-1980's
Naaman Forest-1990's
Rowlett-1998?
Sachse-2002

Also Garland is the most recognized of all these schools. Here in West Texas (Texas Tech) when people ask what school I went to and I say Garland High, they always say... oh those owls huh. With a top notch football program (yes we did have more success in the playoffs when we played the ALLEN/PLANO district..I think we are the only team besides JT that has played all 3 of these teams(LUF, LEE, LONGVIEW)... and we went 1 for 3. Our recent NBA 9th pick Ike (I have a picture with him), our State runner up softball team, our swim team is like 12 years and running district champs, our academics with the IB program. Our Performing Arts program (2003 Acappella Women accepted to TMEA, 2005 Acappella Choir accepted to TMEA) and we generally have a better teaching staff. Usually the older schools are the ones with the most prestige because they have the history.

One small correction, the actual age of garland high school is unknown, the first school in garland was in 1848, but Garland High School (once called Duck Creek High School) was probably built around 1880.

Though the actual date is not known, it is know when the first graduating class was. I graduated in 2002, and I have a pen that says
"Garland High School, 100th graduating class"

I also have a shirt that says Garland Owls, EST:1900. Though it may of still been called Duck Creek HS in the 1800's, around 1900 is when it changed names.

Also the old high school, (1900s) was not in the same location it is now. The original building burned down with the town in the 1900s.

The present school campus, the AD wing part, was built as a works project of the Roosevelt "New Deal" by the Tennesse Valley Authority (TVA) in 1936.
