by tackling them?:p yes, it will be scary to watch them go around defenders.

Guys it will take more than a Dodge and Newton combo to perform the monster routine. You are experiencing for the first time, something you haven't had to deal with since arriving in 5A. Now, I am not saying SLC will not be a good team, but losing 52 seniors in one year will have it's effect on the Dragons in 2006, at least early on in your season you will learn from your losses.

i know....but i have a feeling dodge was preparing for this year last year as well, so these kids will more likely than not, be ready to just step right into the system and 'protect the tradtion'

I am sorry, it is inevitable that Southlake WILL lose a game and not win the State Championship, it may or may not be in 2006 but it will happen. My feeling is this year will be the best opportunity to bag a Dragon. On the flip side, I think 2007 might be a Dragon year to remember.

Not an unreasonable observation. A virtually new wide reciever group and many new linemen on both sides will present a challenge. 2006 will be interesting and 2007 could be a gem.

Rockwall and Grapevine have an excellent chance.

02-16-2006, 09:41 PM
Based on last year's game, one could say Grapevine has a chance, but they lost their quarterback to graduation and I haven't heard anything about their new offensive leaders, as compared to what I hear (and saw) regarding Riley Dodge and Tre Newton.
I don't know anything about Rockwall other than they had a decent year in a tough district.

you will come across the right defense that will stop both of them running. you might want to stick to what has made you so dominant.....passing.

Given the schedule, I don't see Carroll really even threatened until the playoffs unless they hit an injury problem or something.
The new alignment put Carroll in a district similar to what they were in during their first two years in 5A.
Don't forget how much Carroll had to replace in 2003. They lost their entire receiving corps and defense. Also, they lost Chase Wasson at QB and replaced him with a converted WR (Chase Daniel).
This is not the first time Carroll has had to replace a lot of graduated talent. If they have decent receivers and another good OL, they will put up ridiculous numbers with Dodge and Newton starting everything in the backfield.

My school
QB 4.47
FB 4.61
TB 4.52
but none of this speed matters, it is on a track in track spikes. Put the shoulder pads and helmet on and then run a 40 to see what kind of football speed kids have.

sOUTLAKE cARROLL is "God's" team ... totally unstoppable ... totally unbeatable ... I am not even sure why teams continue to play them ... opposing teams should just forfeit to save the public humiliation, right ?

I dont see SLC having any problems next season....Riley Dodge running a 4.42 40 sounds pretty DARN impressive...i think it'll come down to the WRs, SLC runs a HECK of a zone block scheme for the OLinemen and Riley having 4.4 speed takes a HECK of alot of pressure OFF the Oline...
I think IF, Blake Cantu and Co. at the WR position can get open, SLC can win....
oh, and i think the ONLY team that has a SHOT at SLC next season is Evangel, and i dont think its a good one..

Lake Highlands-no, Evangel-no depth will hurt them, Rockwall-absolutely not that will be over with by halftime, Grapevine-good game but Carroll pulls this out, Heritage-no.
If they do lose Lufkin will be the team that beats them.
ALLIN

"If SLC does lose, Lufkin will be the team to beat them" That has been said before, for the last 3 or 4 years. Lufkin will be super tough this year, but if SLC makes it to the 5th round and is undefeated again, anything can happen. By then, they will be firing on all cylinders (both teams hopefully). How many more months??????????

Yeah, the offense is going to change a lot..more like 02 & 04.. it will go back to the running threat being the driving force...Riley will surprise people with his ability to throw, after last season being mostly on the run. He has amazing touch with the ball & I believe he will develop the ability to throw the long ball..As the new O-line develops, he will take the pressure off of them with his mobility, Trey will have matured a lot, picking up the blocking role..can't wait!

okay so all this talk about Riley Dodge and Tre Newton is getting old..... ya Tre can play some ball and riley can scramble good, big deal.......
but another topic should be about Grapevines Sophmore class, 10 sophmores on varsity, 6 of which started and 5 of those got honorable mention all district, and the biggest impact of those 10 was from Kale Gelles and Ethan Davis the two stud outside linebackers, Ethan got sophmore defensive player of the year w/ 7 interceptions and Kale was 2nd on the team in tackles..........
those 2 players WILL stop Riley and Tre... no doubt

At least D08 can say he's associated with a winning team, more than anyone from grapevine can say. I mean its been what? ten years since you won a 4a state championship with 5a numbers? when daniel and luna were juniors they lead slc to state can dodge and newton do it this year they are the fastest back field in the state and one of them can through scary! dodge ran a 4.42 this week in off-season and newton ran a 4.5 how do u think teams r going to be able to stop that?
Very impressive indeed! There is no way to stop that type of talent. But you can slow it way down by having a D-line that can overpower the Dragons O-line with quick penetration into the backfield and have linebackers that are extremely quick and can make one-on-one open field tackles when Dodge and Newton do get out of the backfield! The problem is that with the offense SLC runs and the way that these kids learn and play this system, they will still be able to succeed even against the best defenses. So, bottom line is, they won't be stopped entirely by anyone, but they could be slowed down a step or two be a defense that has the physical ability and is very well coached.

The Dragons offense will get their points until the defenses catch up with "Dodge Ball", so I don't know if the defense is the key as much as an offense that can contol the ball & the clock vs. the Dragon's defense..ie. Katy 03. As we've often said post the 03 title game, Coach Dodge said "everytime the Dragons O got the ball, there were only 3 minutes left in the quarter"...

but ya next year will be an interesting season for district 5-5A, it looks like carrol will be doin more of a qb/rb option or just handin the ball 2 tre, which tre can run the ball he has proven that, im just sayin we got almost are entire defense back so it will be a smash mouth football game
Our is possisive, are is a verb. I'd spend a little more time in the classroom than the track if I were you before insulting a smart D08.

At least D08 can say he's associated with a winning team, more than anyone from grapevine can say. I mean its been what? ten years since you won a 4a state championship with 5a numbers? Thats real talent right there. And I played the trumpet, its a bad @$$ instrument. Having to resort to graffiti to "win" and feel a sense of accomplishment is pathetic.
well how about this.... How bout Southlake divides there school into 2 highschools like Grapevine did to make Colleyville b/c they would still have enough numbers in each school 2 be 5A and see how good yall really are. I guarentee that if gvine and cville where still together the would be whoopin some serious @$$ right now just like Southlake is. The reason that yall wont split the schools and let more kids have a chance to play and do all kinds of other things in school is because yall are 2 ego-minded and all yall care about is winning the State Championship. Let me say this one more time if Gvine and Cville where still 2gether and we did what yall did by having a senior high and a high school then we would be the ones competing every year for that State Championsip.... So why dont yall do what every other school in the state does and seperate your school to give more kids an oppurtunity to play instead of having 100 kids on varsity......... then see how good yall do after that

wouldnt be both 5a..both would be small 4a schools..
and how do you know that? well lets see you dont..you can say a whole bunch of what ifs....but your 'dream' is diffrent..thats 2 diffrents TOWNS (yes i know part of gpvine goes to heritage) but still southlake is ONE town, and can have ONE HS! and the HS's are rather small, compared to ONE hs of many other schools

Ummm SLC isn't even close to being able to split and still have two 5a schools. SLC only recently jumped to 5a, and won last years SMALL school division. They aren't even the biggest school in their district. Take that BS somewhere else, where facts don't count.

After the Colleyvile / gvine split, Colleyville is still larger than Carroll...size obviously does'nt matter, as with Grapevine, Colley has yet to figure out how to compete with the Dragons...weak stuff stang...weak! But keep bringing it! Its entertaining......Carroll is pretty close to built out so rather than splitting, there will come a day when the Dragons drop back to 4-A...

Stang, back to your original post....it sounds like the Stangs have some decent young players coming back. That is good to hear. They gave SLC quite a scare last season. A couple of more breaks and they may have pulled off the upset. Good luck to your team in 2006(except against SLC:) ) . I don't think they will be as good as SLC but that is why they play the game.
SLC does have some rebuilding to do. They have several good, experienced players coming back but alot of "holes" to fill. With Dodges' system in place they should continue to be strong. I think Lufkin would have to be considered the front runner out of the gate with the other usual suspects in the hunt.
I think some of us SLC fans need to be a little more humble when discussing the Dragons accomplishments. Sometimes it is in response to somebody's negative post but other times it is just trash talking. We should enjoy the ride and be thankful for the hard work the coaches and players do to be where they are. We should also know that ride will eventually end. Enjoy it while it last but continue to respect the other teams.

I agree with Drag goon. SLC does have alot of holes to fill and the only thing that yall are relying on is if Coach Dodge can rebuild this team. Grapevine will most likely have two players that are making the jump from playing JV to playing on the varsity level. SLC has more than you can count on one hand. Grapevine and Carroll are simalar because they both need new Qb's, we both have lost all recieving players but Grapevine may have to rely on their experienced defense next year with 7 returning starters.

please leave the opinions as facts behind. the fact is, there are lots of very talented replacements in the wings. dodge isn't just hoping someone shows up next fall. they have been preparing these kids for years. nothing is happenstance around here. these kids have an extra 12 weeks of practice the last 2 years. it all adds up to another pretty good forecast. gl to the mustangs. you lit the fires under our collective rears last year. thanks.

if you had seen them in the 60's and 70's as i did, you'd be surprised if it weren't so. their tradition is the polar opposite of slc's(save for the 2 titles for which they should be immensely proud.) they should have plenty of room in their trophy case.
