Well Favpack, I waited as long as I could to see if you were going to start this...Then I became ansy and had to do it..:D
Ok, so we have the first race of the season starting tomorrow night, with the Bud Shoot-out. It already looks to be hairy with wrecks occuring in practice. Hamlin hit the back of Martin and that then caused a mini pileup, wrecking 6 cars in total. Should be a fun wild race.
Here's the starting lineup for tomorrows shoot-out race...
1. Carl Edwards
2. Kevin Harvick
3. Brian Vickers
4 . Ryan Newman
5. Greg Biffle
6. Mark Martin
7. Jeff Burton
8. Matt Kenseth
9. Jamie McMurray
10. John Andretti
11. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
12. Bobby Labonte
13. Tony Stewart

22. Kurt Busch
23. Jeff Gordon
24. Denny Hamlin
In other news, Danica Patrick has qualified 12th out of 47 drivers, for the ARCA race Saturday.
Good stuff. She still hasn't decided if she is going to race the Nationwide event there, though she will race in 12, possibly 13 events this season. Danica is one of 6 women that will be in the ARCA race.

I for one hopes she does very well.

It will be very interesting to see now that Nascar has said the drivers can be more aggressive and they relaxed the rules on bump drafting. I look for many pile ups on Valentines Day.

I also am very happy to see Nascar is back on Fox. You can't beat Daryl Waltrip in the announcers booth. He keeps it entertaining.

I don't follow NASCAR but do they win some moonshine if they finish a race in first place?

Yep and Daytona is a very bumpy track anyway, so it takes very little of a tap to cause a wreck as it is. There will definately be some big ones in the main race.

Images in signatures?
Well, Danica had a great first race, albeit an ARCA race...It was still an impressive showing for her, especially considering she had to come from the back of the field to finish 6th. She showed great poise out there and while I expect some growing pains for her as this season unfolds, she definately showed she can race a stock car.
And we had a little fun tonight. Gordon bumped Biffle after the restart with 2 laps left. Biffle didn't pit to get tires and as a result was quickly swallowed up by Jeff, who had fresh tires following the pit stop. I'd expect to see alot more excitement this coming week and for sure during the 500.
Here is the results from this evening...
1. Kevin Harvick
2. Jamie McMurray
3. Tony Stewart
4. Jeff Gordon
5. A.J. Allmendinger
6. Kasey Kahne
7. Carl Edwards
8. Matt Kenseth
9. Kurt Busch
10. Kyle Busch
11. Brian Vickers
12. Paul Menard
13. Denny Hamlin
14. Jimmie Johnson
15. Casey Mears
16. David Stremme
17. Greg Biffle
18. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
19. Bobby Labonte
20. David Reutimann
21. Elliott Sadler
22. Michael Waltrip
23. Reed Sorenson
24. Jeff Burton
25. Scott Speed
26. David Ragan

I was out tonight so I missed it. Jr. in 18th? I am expecting another year like the last few. He just can't do it in the top program I guess. He was great in Nationwide but not so much here.
I need to watch and find someone new. Anyone but the Busch brothers. ;)

I dont like Kurt at all, but Rowdy is a fun, exciting driver to watch. That kid has more talent in his little fingers, then most drivers have in their whole body.

True Kurt is the more snotty nosed brat of the two. Kyle does seem to have humbled himself some. His talent is amazing.
I will watch the first few races and see who I like again. I can't believe I am saying this but it would be nice to Gordan win another one. I always thought he was a prima donna but he has matured well.

Well, Gordon is my driver and I will say that early on in his career he resembled what Rowdy is now, not necessarily the talent, but just in his brashness. I certainly am hoping Gordon can get another title before he hangs it up. Oddly enough, if not for JJ coming in (who was scouted by Jeff) Jeff would have 2 more titles already and 3 if Nascar didnt change the Championship format...But, it is what it is and JJ is damn good.
As far as Rowdy is concerned, I think he will win a title pretty soon and once he starts winning them, he is likely to win several in a row like JJ has.

True you can't deny Jeff's driving talent. I was pulled to wanting either Martin or Gordon to win it over JJ this last year after JJ winning the previous two. Martin more than Gordon.
I have a big soft spot for Mark Martin. I would would love to see him win one before he finally hangs it up. He is one tough guy. YAY for the old guy he is the oldest driver to win the pole at Daytona.:)
I am not sure who I will cheer for. Watch now that I have said I am no longer that big on Jr and he will win one.

Fify..:D
I love Martin, he's always been one of my favorites out there. I always pull for him if Jeff gets knocked out, even before he came to Hendrick Motorsports. There isn't another driver out there that has been a better ambasador for Nascar and he is one of, if not the most humble athlete I've ever seen.

Thank you for the fix. My bad.;)
Martin is very humble and such a gentleman. I am just glad I will have something to watch on Sundays after football is over. Helps pass the time before August.

Yea, I'll be sick if he wins 5 in a row...
That it does. I'm as big or bigger Nascar fan than I am an NFL fan. I love college football and high school more, but Nascar is very close for sure.

Never miss High school football (either in person or on the radio) rarely miss watching or keeping up with college and will watch my Cowboys when I can, never record it. If I am home I will watch. After December and the bowl games NFL is it so that takes me into Nascar. Then in August it is high school practice again and time to get ready for another season and have the final weeks of nascar as well. Perfect time of year.
Well, Danica is going to race in the Nationwide Series race at Daytona.
http://i.cdn.turner.com/nascar/2010/news/headlines/bg/02/08/dpatrick.debut.nationwide.daytona/patricknew.665.jpg
Danica Patrick will make her Nationwide Series debut in the No. 7 Chevrolet Saturday at Daytona, JR Motorsports general manager Kelley Earnhardt announced Monday.
Patrick, Earnhardt, and team officials convened Sunday following the ARCA event at Daytona, in which Patrick raced to a sixth-place finish in her stock-car debut. The decision for Patrick to compete in the Daytona Nationwide Series event is supported by sponsor GoDaddy.com and JRM co-owners Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Eury Jr., and Rick Hendrick.
"Racing in the Nationwide Series race was my goal during this entire two-month preparation process, but we wanted to make sure it was the right thing to do,"m Patrick said. "The ARCA race was a blast, and I'm not ready for my first Daytona Speedweeks to end just yet. I want more racing."

Great write up by him. He definately see's the big picture for her. I believe she'll be fine and it will surprise people just how quickly she adapts to racing stock cars at a high level. No doubt it will draw big crowds and viewers to the Nationwide series for the races she runs, and honestly it can use it.

By the way, anyone that says Kyle has matured and Kurt hasn't, doesn't follow them much. Kurt has done a lot to try and change his image. Does he blow up some and use foul language? Sure. He's ultra competitive. But there's no more of the, "do you know who I am?" stuff anymore.
And a Gordon fan hating Kurt, after what he did for Jeff last year (or was it the year before?), is funny. He didn't attempt to pass Jeff at the end. He could have bumped him and crashed him, but instead, he took 2nd. Later that year, situation reversed, what does Jeff do? Bumps Kurt out of the way. F that noise.
Also, I guess Kurt really showed his immaturity in pushing Newman to the win a couple seasons ago. A mature driver would have used the bump and run on his teammate to get the win for himself.

What happened to the rear spoiler? I thought they were getting rid of that wing and going retro?
They talked about gettin rid of the wing. We''ll see.
Maybe it was just me, but the "racing" Saturday night was a wee bit boring. Many times, though (to me), the "shootouts" usually are boring. Stewart made a super move, one that I was sure was a wreck. Gordon was about 6 inches short of being perfect. 6 inches = a bunch of wrecked cars in this business.
I will say this: Whatever the aero/tire combination Nascar and Goodyear has settled on, they have made Daytona MORE of a handling track since the restrictor plate. At least at night. It was cool to watch the cars actually go away, almost like they used to at Rockingham, or Atlanta.
It SHOULD make for a good race, but if the yellow don't keep guys bunched up, and the cars start to slip and slide, you MAY see a breakaway of few cars. Again, to me, good racing. You reward programs that have their car dialed in, instead of catering to all of those (and starting some huge wreck) that DON'T have their cars sorted out.

Until Jimmmy and Chad stumble, though, That's a pretty tall order.

Nascar..er racing is a different animal. I dislike almost all drivers not named Jeff Gordon, big deal. There are a great many who dont like Jeff and a great many who dont like Kurt too, same for all the other drivers.
As far as what a driver chooses to do...Bump em or dont...I want my driver to go for the win..ALWAYS. PERIOD. If Kurt feels he should give any driver the respect, even when he is faster, then shame on him. Jeff did that a few seasons ago with Jimmy at Martinsville and I was pissed that he didnt move Jimmy out of the way, I dont care if he is part owner or not. Bump his a$$ and keep moving. Thats what made Dale great- Go for the win..ALWAYS.

Then people are full of crap. Kurt would drive aggressively like that early in his career and everyone complained and said he was a jerk.
I hate a lot of drivers too. Gordon, Johnson, Harvick, Stewart, Montoya...I'm sure there are more.
I like a few other than Kurt. Martin, Edwards, Labontes, and a couple others I like well enough.
But I love going to a race and seeing that fan in a blue deuce shirt or jacket in a see of red. We have an immediate bond. Us against the world. I love when Kurt is the "jerk" and gets up on his wheel. He's got a lot of talent, and I wish he'd get back to racing like he's meant to instead of playing nice.

I think it may be Mark Martin's year.
I'd be completely fine with seeing Mark win one before he takes his last ride. Five runner up finishes in his career is just not something I equate to Mark at all. There is nothing about him that says "loser" to me, or "almost". Everytime I see him (on and off the track), I see a winner, so I'd love for him to finally put that notch in his belt for sure.
What happened to the rear spoiler? I thought they were getting rid of that wing and going retro?
They are still looking at it and likely wont do anything until late March, early April. They originally said that something could be in place prior to Bristol, but just last week they said they were still testing some things and that the data from all the tests could be released by early March. With that in mind, there isn't any way we would actually see them on the track until well after Bristol, because all the teams will need to do their own testing with them due to the drastic change it will make to the handling of the cars.
From a fan standpoint I like it because the cars will look better (not a great and viable reason, but truth none the less) and the racing should be much better.
The safety reasons are first and foremost though and without question the spoilers are much safer then the wings.

Every year I become more of a fan of NASCAR. It has passed NFL which wasn't too hard. It has now passed college baseball and is probably going to pass college football as my favorite sports to watch. I haven't been able to watch any decent high school football because I have been out of Texas for over 6 years now. I can't wait for the start of the 2010 season. I really hope to see Mark Martin win a championship and go out on top. If not him then I want to see one of the Roush drivers win it all. Whatever happens it will be one hell of an interesting year.

Bumpin' is back!!!! This season is going to be good!!!
Well, the Daytona 500 has came and went...Not alot of crash excitment, so thats good. The track had it's own issues though. In fact about 3 hours worth of issues with the hole in the track, caused from water weeping from all the rain. I hope the Daytona folks either re-pave the track or put concrete down, because outside of the weeping issue, it's become an extremely bumpy rough track.
The bumping was definately back in full force today, though it was a pretty clean race all in all as far as wrecks are concerned. Jeff did cause one with Kasey and I feel bad for Kacey in that deal. He rammed Kasey twice while in the turn and he knows better than that. Not real sure what Jeff's problem was today, but it bothers the hell out of me that he seemed to be driving aggressive today and other drivers had to pay for it...Funny enough, he fell to the same fate on the final lap. Kinda what goes around, comes around thing.
Jr. had a damn good finish at 2nd..Pretty impressive considering he was 10th on the restart.
Anyways the results of the Daytona 500 are as follows and fittingly the #1 car finished 1st...I am pretty happy for Jamie and he was emotionally shaken in the post race interview..Good stuff!

Daytona 500 was delayed 2 hours for a pothole? Next year they're going to set up orange cones and have the drivers form one lane for no apparent reason.
Let me start with:
I am not a Jeff Gordon fan. However, when Gordo bumped Kahne, causing him to spin, I really think that MOST of that, was a result of the front runners getting out of shape on the restart. It just accordianed back to Kahne, and Gordon never got the memo.
Okay, pressing on....................
Who was in the 88 on the last lap? THAT was refreshing. See what happens, when you take your foot off the brake?
Tell Jimmie Johson not set his car up that way, and the asphalt will hold up better.
Why didn't the course guys, use the good stuff on the hole to begin with?? I was initially concerned, when the off white stuff was used to ultimately fix the hole. I thought maybe it was the same stuff they use, to paint stripes on the public roads. That stuff is slicker than Owl snot. Guess it wasn't the same stuff.
Is Jamie Macmurray gay?

It was a pretty entertaining race outside of the restarts. The restarts/delays are always annoying, especially when there are so many inside of the final laps. It takes away from the race, and the best driver for the day doesn't usually win.

I was actually yelling for Jr. at the last. But I laughed hard when Jr. bumped Jamie after they crossed the finish line. Kind of like, "hey buddy, I was right on your tail". But since it is Jr.s car anyway, I guess he can bump it if he wants to. :)

It's really Theresea's car. But I think the bump meant the same thing.
I kept hollering for Truex Jr, in the 1 car.

Even though I KNEW it was Mcmurray.

I was yellin for Jr. at the end also. I think I was yellin just because it was so unbelievable that he was actually that close at the end.

That was pretty much my point about thinking he was being aggressive, because everyone except Jeff got the memo.
As far as McMurray being gay or not....This says no..

Though your likely joking...I find it very refreshing that he was moved to tears in what is a mans man sport...If you listened, Daryl, Mike and Larry all said they were crying too.

Well, not Jr's car but I definately think that bump was a "I wanted to beat THAT car so bad I'm slightly pissed, because my pissy step mom owns it" bump.:)

I agree that this is a case now of the best driver doesn't usually win deal with the restart format, but, all in all I love the restart style they use now. Its very exciting from a fan point of view, to have about 25 cars racing for 1 spot. The delays, however, were aggravating as hell...I can deal with the usual cautions, but the track issue ticked me off a little.

Didn't Texas Motor speedway have the same issue of water seeping up through the track the first year it was open? It was a mess.

Didn't Texas Motor speedway have the same issue of water seeping up through the track the first year it was open? It was a mess.
Daytona hasn't been resurfaced since the 90's. It's time.
Daytona officials are repairing the area in turn 2 with the pot hole that caused 2 delays during the 500 last weekend. Says they aren't going to re-pave it until 2012...
Daytona International Speedway began repairs Thursday to the damaged portion of Turn 2 that forced two delays during the Daytona 500 totaling more than two hours.
Track president Robin Braig said a team of engineers and asphalt specialists from North American Testing Corp. decided a strip of pavement will be removed and a reinforced concrete patch will be poured in the area where a significant pothole developed during Sunday's race.
"This is the correct course of action to repair the track," Braig said.
The broken asphalt, which twice caused stoppage of the Daytona 500, is getting a temporary fix.
The patch in the asphalt surface will be about 6 feet wide and 18 feet long, and should hold up until the 2½-mile, high-banked superspeedway undergoes a $20 million repaving scheduled for as early as 2012. The current surface was paved in 1978.

I like Jimmie Johnson a lot but he had incredible luck on his last pit stop. What are the odds that just as he enters pit row a caution comes out? He pits and is able to just barely beat the pace car to the scoring line at the end of pit row. When everyone elses pits under caution, Johnson gets the lead. Then Harvick closes the gap, is in position to overtake Johnson and he scrapes the wall and falls back. Johnson made a good move to block Harvick but having the wall crush Harvick's right fender in ultimately helped.
It was an exciting last 20 laps.
Driver 48, gets win 49. Thats 2 wins in 3 races to start to 2010 season.
Jeff likely would have won that race with 4 tires, but thats how it goes. You can second guess those decisions all day.

Looks like the "wings" will be coming off pretty soon. Thank goodness: For the safety of the drivers and for the sanity of the fans. That damn thing made the cars look ugly to me, plus it affected the racing too...
"We're hoping within the next two of three races that we'll be able to be at a point where we say it's time to take the wings off and put the spoiler on," NASCAR president Mike Helton said Monday.
While Helton didn't provide a specific date for the expected removal of the wings from the cars, that timeline coincides with the March 28 race at Martinsville that most teams have expected to be the first with the more traditional-looking rear spoilers.

I've softened to him since he came to HMS for sure. I used to hate him, mostly due to the fans that latched onto him because of the last name. Since he's came to Hendricks, the fans have settled down quite a bit. At least they dont throw stuff at Gordon anymore.:)
I will say, though, that I cant for the life of me understand why he isn't competitive with Hendricks, like the other 3 are. He has the best of everything with Rick and still isn't getting it done.
In all honesty though, I just dont believe he was ever that good, he was just popular and ran pretty well on the restrictor plate races. Not a knock, just an observation. I dont wish him to do bad at all. I used too, but I am neutral on him now.

Personally I think sometimes life has a way of humbling people. He now has to do it himself, and not on his daddy's name. Sometimes we have to fall to realize not all things come easy.
I wish him well, I do think he handled his dad death as well as he could. I was also very impressed with how he handled the step-mother stuff. He refused to take it public. It could have been a whole uglier.
I also think that Jr. has over extended himself with all of the other things he has going on besides his racing. I think he has like 3 other businesses.

All good points.
I completely agree about how he handled his dads death. He is for sure a mature guy. The same with his step-mom too. She completely mishandled that situation and he handled it extremely maturely.
There's every chance he has over extended himself, but most of the (at least the top guys) racers have other businesses too. Some in the racing field, some not. Anyway, not that Jr. isn't over extended, but I'm just saying others like Jeff, Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin..etc all have other things going on as well.
It's a definate balancing act for sure and I know Kevin has Delana, Jr. has Kelley to help take alot of the load off of them, so that they can try and concentrate more on racing.

Yes the top guys do have multiple businesses. But they didn't build them going through what Jr. did. Jr. had to deal with his dad's death and the aftermath with sudden golden boy status and the internal stuff with Teresa. There was no getting away from it. It was his work and where he lived. Alot of times that kind of pressure won't show up until after it is done. If I am correct in my thought then this year would be year 3 away from the Teresa stuff and he should be able to focus and show what he has. To me this is the year for him either come out or stay an average driver.
I also said that because in an interview with Daryl Waltrip earlier this year when Daryl asked him if he was over extended he protested to much. IMO
Don't get me wrong I am in no way making excuses for his performance on the track. He has been handed the keys to the best cars, shops, and people in the racing world. Now he has to step up and do something with it. I hope he does.

I agree nobody went through what Jr. did, at least not as heralded as his dads death was (other drivers had moms and dads die though). What I was saying though, is that Kelley pretty much runs most of the stuff for him. Same thing that Delana does for Kevin, but you're right as far as piling all that stuff on top of his dads death. It would be tough for me. I likely couldn't do it.
Yep, this is his 3rd at Hendricks. Though when Rick brought him on, he expected rsults from year one. Now, no doubt Rick makes money off of the 88, but Rick is, has and always will be a results first owner and he didn't bring Jr. on just for the media attention. I cant see him sticking with Jr. for too much longer if he doesn't at least win a few races and make the chase. Not that he has to win the championship, but he needs the 88 in the winners circle and to make the chase.
I know you aren't making excuses for him at all and the bolded portion of your last sentence is pretty much the bottom line in all this. He must start performing. I, too, hope he does. Like I said earlier, I've softend to him since he's come to HMS. He's now a teammate of Jeff's and I like all the HMS teams to do well, just maybe not as well as JJ has.:)

I agree nobody went through what Jr. did, at least not as heralded as his dads death was (other drivers had moms and dads die though). I really need to quit talking about him because everytime I do he has a bad race.
Yes other drivers have dealt with deaths and tragedy but not in the public media like he has. That is all I'm saying-it all has been very public and that makes a tough situation even harder. No excuses, he is a big boy and needs to and needed to deal with it.
You are right, now he just has to win or at least be a contender each week or RH will send him on.
They were saying yesterday on Speed people are calling for JJ to quit winning to make it more exciting. He is starting to be hated. So I guess he is the next one to be hated. That puts him up there with Richard Petty, Daryl Waltrip, Dale Earnheart, and Jeff Gordon as far as winning lots and being hated for it. Pretty good company.

It is pretty automatic for JJ & team right now. How long will it run? He has a great owner, but the like all businesses, the sport is changing a lot behind the scenes with sponsorship/attendance issues, and only time will tell.
For whatEVER the reason, Hendrick seems to always have a team that doesn't perform like the others.
As of late, it always seemed to be the 5 (Mears, Bush, etc). Not awful mind you, just not as good as the others.
I am not intimate enough to understand the inner workings of Hendrick Motorsports, so I can't say anything with any confidence.
Earnhardt's Jr's comments after Daytona told me as much as anything however. With the 2nd place finish coming out of nowhere, Junior was almost apologetic, stating that "he doesn't like to drive that aggresive". Uh, Sir, this is Nascar. Most all of the cars are PRETTY equal. Your driving is what will define your success as much as any set of tires, or rear gear, or camber angle your front right tire might be.
Nobody wants to talk about Crazy Carl? Should there be a suspension? A fine? Both? I think that Nascar will enact some monetary fine, and possibly a short suspension. But make no mistake. If he does something like that again, they'll park him, and for a LOT of races.
Just MO.

It doesn't look like this year JJ will be slowing down any. The season is early but he seems to have picked up right were he left off last year. I like him. He is a classy guy.

Yea, forgive me here, but I dont think JJ and Chad have any plans to stop winning.:)
They are the most complete team in racing (any form of racing, that is. Infact any sport) and unless there is a break-up of parts of the team, I dont see them slowing down too much. What I do see is other teams having a catch-up of sorts. Natural bumps in the road for the 48 team (see Daytona) and other teams just flat getting better (see Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon..etc. I know the 48 is doing great so far (2 wins in 4 races) but there is so much that can happen to de-rail a season with 32 races left, that it's more the unknown than it is the known.
Fans hating a winner is all part of sports though. Look at the Yankees, the Cowboys, the Patriots, Jeff Gordon, Sr., Waltrip, Man-U, the Lakers, the Celtics...etc. They (the fans) want teams like that to do bad almost more than they want their team to do good. The 48 winning like he has isnt bad for the sport at all. What is bad for the sport is all the other teams not being able to stay competitive with them and thats something they all control. When JJ beats Jeff, I'm not upset at JJ, I'm upset with Jeff and the team. Most people need to focus their energy on pushing their team and driver to be better, rather than thinking the 48 team is doing something bad for the sport.

All 4 cars are equal, support is equal and resources are equal. The difference is the drivers and teams, so if a car isnt performing to the level of the others, it's directly tied to driving and team.
I think Carl should be suspended for sure, as well as fined and put on probation too. There is no place for what he did yesterday. Bumping a guy in the heat of a race, when the other guy is slower or blocking, or if it's incidental or even on one of the short tracks (lower speeds) is one thing and I dont have much issue with that stuff, but what Carl did is dangerous and uncalled for. He could have injured Brad or the fans or both and even worse, he could have killed one or both as well. Hell, Carl admitted afterwards that he did it intentionally. It's one thing if you think he did, but cant really prove it, but when the guy freaking admits thats why he did it...Um, as far as I'm concerned, you need to be sitting at home for a few races watching it on tv.

Actually, the 5 and the 88 share a shop, while the 24 and the 48 share a shop. While most practices and techniques are common, Not ALL secrets are shared between the shops. I think that is why the 25 (or the 5) were never a. s strong as the 24 and the 48. These days, the 5 does okay, and I can't think of anyone else I would want in Junior's ear, than Mark Martin as a mentor.

Agree 100%. Kyle Petty just laughed when it was said now it is JJ turn to be hated for winning. He has seen all the greats be hated then loved. People forget that at one time Dale Earnheart was hated when he was winning all the time. Now that Jeff Gordon has not been as much he is starting to be loved by all.
The driver/team relationship is key to who wins and who doesn't. Just like in football you can have all the talent on the field but if the chemistry is not there, they will not win. Same with racing.
Daryl Waltrip said the samething about JJ. Don't expect him to lower his team, expect the other teams to raise up to the bar JJ has set.

SOMEBODY, or SOMEBODIES, will come along. Who is it going to be? Roush gonna get it together? Ganassi/Earnhardt? Childress is starting to look racy again. Will it be this year?

I don't know if it will be this year but when it does happen I am hoping it is Childress. I do like Kevin Harvick.
Petty had quite a run going, then Yarborough came along. Earnhardt Sr. came along, with a Rusty, Alan, and Bill mixed in there. Then, it was Gordon's turn, with a Labonte or two thrown in for good measure.
Maybe we should be lookin at Stewart. They have been quiet thus far, but if they get their act together, watch out. It usually is less benign than this in the beginning, though. When a new guy hits, they usually come out swinging. I haven't seen that this year, other than the Childress guys, and that isn't knockout runs. I know the Chase format has changed some of this.

Actually, sharing a shop has nothing to do with support, ownership, parts, building...etc. It's just where they have the cars.
Dont kid yourself here- The 48 team DOES NOT share secrets with the 24 team. ----> See the 48 team winning the last 4 championships in a row, while the 24 has finished 6th, 2nd, 7th and 3rd. And, while what you are really speaking of may seem like "secrets", they are actually just car set ups, and there's way to many things about how the 48 is set up, that Jeff doesn't like...same with the 24 that Jimmy doesn't like. That goes for Mark and Jr. too.
Another thing as well is...Not much sperates the top 25-30 cars each week. And last I checked 29 of those top 30 do not share a shop with the 48 team. Doesn't seem to bother Smoke or Happy or Kurt or Denny or Rowdy or Biffle or Kenseth or Kahne...etc...etc...etc. Those guys do pretty well without any "secrets".
I think at 35 years old (not a young kid mind you, see Joey Lagano or even Rowdy as much younger) the thought of him needing a mentor at the highest level of racing is a bit silly. He just needs to lace em up and go racing.
Yep.

I think it'll be another HMS team (Mark or Jeff) and Roush (Kenseth, Edwards or Biffle) and Gibbs (Hamlin) and Stewart/Haas (Smoke) and RPM (Kahne) and Penske (Kurt) and RCR (Happy, Boyer or Burton) that put pressure on the 48 team and keep them from winning a 5th in a row. That and the typical "bumps in the road" stuff that can happen for any team during a 36 race schedule.
Like I said earlier about the 24 and 48 teams. Dont kid yourself, same shop or not...the 24 team would cut Jimmy's nuts to beat him on race day and for the championship.

Much agreed. I was taking the other angle. The angle that points out that the 5 and 88 do NOT share the same shop space as the 24 and the 48. The angle that not ALL the knowledge is always transferred.
My sentimental favorite is Mark Martin. Don't know if he has it this year or not. Would like to see Stewart do it. One of the best drivers in the sport, IMO.
The Childress boys might be up to something. We'll have to see!

I completely agree with you about Martin. I'd love to see him get that ellusive title. I think he'll be ok the rest of the season. The 5 team is going to get a few wins this season. He just needs solid finishes in the races that he doesn't win. He'll be in contention by the time the chase rolls around.
I used to not like Smoke when he was at Gibbs. Too many anger issues back then, but he has mellowed alot and he's grown on me. My feelings wouldn't be hurt if he won one either.
IMO, the fact that RCR seems to be getting things figured out, is good for the sport. Nascar needs a competitive RCR group. Even if it's just one of his drivers...having RCR in contention and in the chase is very good for Nascar as a whole. I'd love to see Happy win one too.
I must say, I am fairly shocked that no suspension came from Carl's actions...
NASCAR president Mike Helton on Tuesday announced Sprint Cup driver Carl Edwards had been placed on probation for the next three Sprint Cup races as a result of Edwards intentionally wrecking Brad Keselowski this past Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Edwards' probation covers the March 21 and March 28 races at Bristol Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway, both half-mile short tracks, and the April 10 event at Phoenix International Raceway, a 1-mile oval that NASCAR still considers a short track.

I was just having this very conversation with a co-worker. In all honesty, it would have surprised me if the DID suspend Carl, after this incident. NASCAR usually gives you a swing, MAYBE two. Ask Kevin Harvick.
Now, the next time Carl does something like this? They'll park him for 10 races, effectively killing his car, and his team.
People will argue "he could have killed somebody", and they would be right. But the fact is, he didn't kill anybody, and while he has had minor things going on, this was his first real serious deal.
NASCAR sent their message.
I also wonder about what the other drivers think about Carl's actions. Will steer completely clear of him (I doubt it), or will they cut him less slack now? Is Keslowski really the bad guy? Did Carl do the whole sport a favor, and get this young mans attention? Remember, these guys race each other all the time. Brad K put Carl on his roof not too long ago. Is this payback for that? If so, then Carl might think about a career change.
In listening to Carl, this was a cumination of MANY things done by Brad in the past. Of course, what else are you gonna say, when you just got caught red handed, and a national TV audience wants to know what they just saw?
Oh, the DRAMA!

Brad K. has had it coming for a while. He has been the cause of many wrecks dating back to last year. If not Edwards, then someone else was going to put him in the wall. I know of no less than 5 other drivers that have no love loss for Keselowski. Brad is going to have a tough year, he has pissed off way to many.

I pretty much agree with you. Though, for the most part, I believe what Brad did to Carl was just inexperience and hard racing, nothing malicious.
I've never liked either driver, so honestly I dont care either way, but I know I dont want ANY driver intentionally trying to engage in some "payback scheme" on a fast track like that. Not saying I'd be fine with it anywhere, but on a short track or a road course, I have far less worries of a driver possibly losing his life over something like that.

Looks like the "wings" will be coming off pretty soon. Thank goodness: For the safety of the drivers and for the sanity of the fans. That damn thing made the cars look ugly to me, plus it affected the racing too...

Good deal. I had almost gotten used to the look, didn't want too, but after 3 seasons it had become "part of the new ride". The safety and racing will be beneficial in terms of this change back to the spoiler. Sure, for the most part Nascar higher ups dont think it put a major issue in the everyday driving of the car, but on fast tracks with hard rear impacts if the car was lifted, that wing was just that and would help the car to go airborne if it turned with the rear to the wind.
The big thing will be the improved down force at the rear of the car, allowing a much better grip or bite. this will allow much better handling in the turns and faster speeds on the straight aways (as seen in testing at 'Dega).

The wing should give greater downforce, than the old spoiler. That is what allowed NASCAR to "give back" some motor (make the holes in the restrictor plate larger) at Talledega and Daytona. If the motor is the same in the winged and spoilered cars, The spoilered car SHOULD be faster. The car won't be as stable in turns. Less downforce. IT is why an Indy car is ablsolute Shite without a rear wing. The car simply will not grip the pavement (not enough downforce), without that downforce.
In any case, to me, it is a step back in the right direction. Now, get rid of the stupid template car setup. I want to see a Ford, A Toyota, A Chevy. I don't want to see a box stickered up to look like a Fusion, which happens to look just like a Camry, or is that an Impala?

No thanks! That ship has sailed. Go back to hearing days and weeks and years of Ford (or pick your own make) drivers/crew chiefs/owners/fans ***** about needing another 1/8 of an inch spoiler to equalize some perceived/imagined/real deficiency in drag/lift/down force!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No Thanks.
Nascar is put too much emphasis on equality. The box car is an example. It caters to the "no one left behind" mentality. It still harbors SOME competition, but not the level of competition it could be. Some of you guys will point the micro competitve angles, but I am talking more big picture here. Things, gasp!, out of Nascar's control.
There have been things that NASCAR HAD to do. Initially, everybody had to drop motor size. Understand that. But, when Chevy threw out the Lumina in the late 80's (a front drive car), and Nascar said okay to that, it began the downward migration of diluted racing Nascar promotes today.
Hey, how bout letting the manufacturers actually have some personal involvement again? Hell, let em whine. When you get your tail kicked enough, the competitive fires begin to boil again!
Let's get this sport back to some semblence of what it used to be. A sport, where the particular car brand had SOME say in the competitiveness of the car. Let one make win by two laps every now and then. Whiners will whine. Winners will find a way to win.
If I want to watch clone cars make parade laps, I'll watch F1.

Congrats to Jimmie Johnson for his 50th win.

No doubt.
Jr. had a pretty decent day too. I thought Kurt had the field covered today, but that 48 team came through when it counted again. Wow.

I am happy for Jr. and his crew. I'll a take 7th place finish for him.
Did you hear what Kurt said after the race? He said he would have rather lost to anyone other than the 48. I almost felt for him.
I felt bad for Mark Martin as well.

Yep. Thats what it's come to. Everyone is tired of losing to the 48 team. Now it's time to do something about it. I never feel bad for anyone for losing straight up.

Me neither. When I said I almost felt sorry for him it was for his frustration not that he lost straight up.
Sorry to see you abandon NASCAR for F1, cause they ain't going back.
I watch all sorts of motorsports. I think it is what lets me be objective about things, and not defensive about others.
The race on Sunday was pretty good. It wasn't a wreck fest, like Bristol can be. There was SOME good racing, helped by the progressive banking of the track.
Jr. FINALLY had him a car that he liked. Top 5 fo sho, if he hadn't got his speeding ticket.
JJ = Right place, right time. Perfect example of making your own luck.
We may be seeing who will be challenging the Hendrick Mother ship. Bush and Kaslowski are startin to look pretty racy.
Damit. I thought Jeffy baby had this thing wrapped up and BOOM!! caution flag.:(
Freakin Denny was driving like a man possessed. Hard to believe that late pit stop paid off. Good for him.

Dang, Jimmy Johnson DIDN'T win?

Apparently normal.:D
What Jimmy DID do, though, was take over the points lead. Yikes.
Hey, does Jr's 15th place finish mean he didn't have a car that he liked?:heli:

Logano finished 2nd and is 13th in the standings.
What was I doing at 19? Must have been studying and walking as I didn't have a car until I was 21.

Yep. Joey is a special talent, thats for sure. All 3 Gibbs cars looked real good today. If there is a program out there that has all it needs to de-throne Hendrick, it is Joe Gibbs Racing.

I didn't get to see any of the race. I didn't get to see any qualifying, if there was any.
Junior was top 10 for a time. What happened to him?
Gordon led laps. Why didn't he win? I mean, in the olden days, if Gordie got out front, fagetaboutit.
My team to watch (besides Childress), is the Dodge boys. I think they MAY have something for the Hendricks boys this year.
And I am not a Dodge guy.
Miss Kitty, take heed!

Qualifying was rained out.
Jr. slid back from the 8th spot from about the 15th-20th lap on. Never got out front of the green track and didn't keep up with the changing track from overcast to sun to overcast to sun to overcast...etc..etc.
One thing about the olden days, is competition from top to bottom was not as good as it is now and the cars were far less "equal" too. When Jeff got out front back then, he had a decided advantage over the field...Not so much now, plus the double file restarts pushes everyone back together. If Monday afternoon had been single file, Jeff would have been gone.
Jeff had a top 5 car all day and in fact was leading with a pretty decent lead when Rowdy spun out bringing out the caution, with Jeff about 90 feet from the start finish line on what would have been the white flag lap. Instead we had the awesome GWC and after the restart Kennseth got into Jeff and Jeff then returned the favor and Denny, who had restarted 4th was able to make those new tires stick and when flying right on by. Which is fine, he had led 172 laps, so he was really the best car all day. Jeff was honestly not better than a top 5 car and he finished 3rd, so it's fine.
I think Dodge is fine, as long as we are pretty much saying Kurt is "Dodge", because the only other Dodge drivers are Keselowski and Hornish and neither of those guys are consistent enough to put any serious pressure on Hendrick.
I think Roush (Ford) and Gibbs (Toyota) are the teams to watch to supplant Hendrick as top dogs.
I think Bush (Kurt) may have something this season. Not saying that the Gibbs boys or the Childress boys are chopped liver.
Roush SHOULD compete, but it almost seems like that have not progressed, but rather, maintained.
I did see a recap on Showtime about the race. Pretty interesting, the way it ended. Good old Martinsville, good for a hurt feeling or three!
This time Gordon pushed Kenseth inSIDE the car, instead outside the car, on pit road! Only after Kennseth pushed first!

70% of rain for Saturday and Sunday. :(
If the weather up DFW way, is anything like what we had around here the last couple of days (and it will be), I don't see them racing till May.
Actually, Monday is ONLY calling for a 30% chance.

As I told my son, leaving the TMS parking lot, Who would have thought that by Sunday afternoon, the best racing I've seen, was the ARCA race!
