View Full Version : Lufkin dominate next year?

With all the returning talent next year the lufkin panthers may be the only super team next year. The question is will there be any teams that can defeat or even contend with them next year?

Lufkin is always very well coached and loaded with talent..next year that talent will also be loaded with experienced leadership..it's going to take a very good team, playing their best, to beat the Pack...IMO

dont worry big guy....i promise that once playoffs start, and even at least one non-district game, the pack will be challenged and probably beat....there are some GREAT teams across this great state of texas, and lufkin is one of them....but only 2 win the state title (in 5A)...

Well yes there are alot of greats teams in texas, but there only a few elite and it seems as though without the star team southlake carrol who has lost their star recievers no one is able to stand in their way.

At Carroll, we might say the older receivers have moved on, giving the new crew their chance to shine...The Dragons have reloaded before and been fairly effective...but this is about Lufkin, who will be very good next year...;)

Lufkin will probably have it's most explosive offensive unit ever next year. To think that Jeremy Claybon - as a complete unknown junior - eclipsed Reggie's single season passing TD mark is still hard to believe. Injuries can change that in a heartbeat - but the Pack will put points up in bunches.

The kicking game will be as good as anyone in Texas with Jaime Fernandez back one last year. The defense will have a good base, but, by no means loaded. No one really worries about D around here - but you're not going to see 3-4 all-staters on D like you may have seen in years past. Should be fun - the unknown is always most exciting.

i did notice some BIG young linemen( sophs) on the sideline for the playoffs last year. If they develop early, LP's Offense could be very deadly combining speed with those big ole boys come playoff time.
who will be the big leaders on the D, it seems like the heart of that defense graduated.

In a playoffs last year, i attended some LP games with a relative, of my wife , who lives in lufkin. I asked him during the game if any one had returned any kickoffs, and he said a few. I said, " That really surprises me with Lufkin's speed." He said, " oh you meant for a touchdown. I thought you just meant running it out of their own endzone..." It was very funny.

jaime has touchbacks even when he's kicking into the wind. I haven't seen AMC, so i cannot comment on their kicker, but the fernandez kid will have his pick of schools to kick for, come college time. very strong leg.

he'll have a lot of schools from which to pick, but there would be a few where he won't get offered due to already having a good scholarship kicker on hand.

that's a function of having 80 scholarships to offer, not of how good he is.
no program is going to load up on kickers.

I didn't realize your AMC kicker was a junior - he is very good, as is Jaime. Both made all-state selections. Sure seems both would also have a bevy of schools to pick from.

The "Pack" will be loaded next year on offense, but you can never tell the outcome. The season is long , and the Defense will have to prove itself as there will be some new faces. We always think we can contend for the title. We thought in 2003 that we would go back to back, but a up start new to 5a SLC :) knocked us out.............

Lufkin will be a very good team next year, but so will a dozen other teams in 5A. I don't like the word dominate when your 7 months away from playing your first game. Too many talented teams around in the State to talk about dominance.

We'll see, starting in September.

I guess you're referring to the team LP OWNS...

I don't think anyone would concede anything to Lufkin, but they do have momentum, talent, and tradition of being there at the end. Who knows who will step in up this year? Look at what Cy Falls did this past year, S. Garland last year, you remember them right?
At least one west texas program is usually pretty stout, like Abilene, they just have to play SLC usually, so the rest of the state doesn't get to see them...
San Antonio, Austin, and Houston always have 1-2 teams that could win it all.
If my school is in the playoffs, I definately don't want to see a few names on my side of the bracket, and LP is definately one of them.

Comm'on a stupid Scout Teamer came on here to make that remark about Lufkin. None of the Lufkin regulars have said anything about dominate. You Longview boys always jump on a crumb and try to run with it.

For the life of me, I cannot see where anyone from Longview can or should make any negative remarks about Lufkin. You have proved nothing other than your teams have not produced with the talent you have had there.

Need I remind you, again, of Lufkin's 10 wins ina row over Longview, Lufkin to the State semi-finals 3 of the last 4 years, losing to the eventual State Champions Southlake in each case. Longview has thought for 2 years that they had Southlakes number, only they could never get there to find out.
No your always home complaining about getting beat in the playoffs either because your players were sick, had failing grades, bad coaching decisions, team was not ready to play or bad officiating, it is never because you were not the better team.

Lufkin will have a good team this year, but I am not going to let a scout teamer talk for me and the whole Lufkin area, Southlake is going to be dominate, just ask them.

Drgnbkr - my comment was that the Lobos - Longview - was the dominant team in 2005 until about week 8 or so - then they just simply lost something and were booted out in Round 1. Leonard's groin injury (which I never heard confirmed) appears to have happened around Week 1 of the po's -- maybe the week or two before against The Woodz - who really knows. He was probably no more than 90% before that due to major knee surgery - and 70% after the injury -- still better than 90% of db's out there.

In this Texas playoff system you also need to have a couple of breaks go your way and be relatively health to win 6 games in the playoffs to be State Champs.

the end of the season ( around week 8) was also when Claybon really came into his own and became an asset at crunchtime.

He got better each time I saw Lufkin play. In the POs he was just as vital as anyone else when it came to making plays.

I hope he is able to recover from the surgeries he's had on his arm, and be able to play as confidently as he was at the time of injury. IMO, that is when I thought Lufkin had a chance against anybody last season when Jeremy came on so strong.

from the outside looking in, i don't think the streak means much EXCEPT for bragging rights. As with any great rivalry, either of these teams can win each time they play.

Wouldn't say Lufkin and Allen were the SLC/LP of today. Lufkin thumped Allen in the playoffs 43-16 in 2000 and 28-6 in 2002. The SLC/LP games have generally been much closer. Lufkin has 9 of 11 returnees on offense and 5 of 11 returning on defense with a stellar soph. class coming up. This team may be the best since the McNeal led state champs. Until Allen beats SLC I wouldn't worry about the Panthers.
