I was wondering what's the best sporting event you ever turned down or couldn't go to because of work/sick/ school or whatever...
I turned down FREE flight, room , board, and entertainment and the Daytona 500 this weekend, because I am SO FREAKING DEDICATED to my job!
my Bro-in-law invited me and my wife out for this weekend to see the busch race and the 500, and I had to turn it down. My wife is going, I insisted she not miss the chance to see it with her brother. She loves NASCAR, I don't care one way or another, but i do think it would be cool to see it!

I missed Nolan Ryan's 7th No-Hitter because I had a British Literature final exam the next day in college and always studied for the test with a group of friends. I listened as he was working his way through the lineup on the radio and think I ended up getting a "C" on the test and a "B" for the semester. The bad thing was this was 1 month before I joined the Air Force and I had been driving over to Arlington for a lot of games and wanted to go to this game.
The previous year, I went to bed too early and didn't listen to Nolan pitch that 6th No-Hitter in Oakland. I went to his first attempt at 300 wins, but Deion and the Yankees beat him up before he got a no-decision. I tried to get tickets for the 5000 strikeout game, but couldn't get them without paying a scalper.
I also missed out on seeing a 4OT Penguins-Capitals playoff game because I decided to go on Sunday versus the game during the week.
The good news was I went to Emmitt's rushing record game!:D

OH MAN. Sorry you had to turn that down. I have never been to a NASCAR race before, but when I can drive you better believe I will be at the first race at Texas Motor Speedway.

I got to the PESH/John Tyler "Greatest HS Game EVER", I believe, in the early 4th Qtr. John Tyler scored just after I got there and went up by a godawful amount of points....so I left thinking the game was over. I listened to the finish on the way home, thereby learning my lesson about leaving games early. I never leave one early now........period.

:D I didn't go to the Katy vs. Cinco Ranch game last year because it was an instant sell out and some friends of mine had a senior that year. So I let them have my seats for that game so they wouldn't miss the experience.
The sacrifices I make for my friends. SHEEEESH!!!!! :D

At this year's Lufkin vs. SLC game I noticed an elderly man with an empty space next to him. I asked him if the seat was saved for anybody. He said, "Yes, sort of." I asked what sort of meant and he told me that him and his wife had been attending PACK games together for 30 yrs. but she had passed away and the empty seat next to him was where she would normally have sat. I expressed my condolences to him and asked if he had any other family members who enjoyed coming to the games and he said yes. I asked him why none of them came to the game. He said, "Well they all went to the funeral." When I asked him what funeral, he said "my wifes". :D

Why can't you just say you don't like NASCAR? How come people feel the need to insult the things they don't like versus just saying they don't like it?

heres my take on nascar..
its something i havent liked till UPS started sponsering dale jarrett..so my dad and i started watching it, and it becomes addicting i must say..its something me and him can bond doing, since he works a lot during the week, its nice to be able to hang out and watch it on sunday's..i espically love the night races, mom bro and sis are not home (at tournaments) we just some pizza's turn on the race and hang out..same goes for football as well, its something me and my dad can do and enjoy it..go ahead yankee call me a 'redneck'

I would rather watch drivers go 300+ for ~4 seconds on a straight 1/4 mile, than watch people make left turns for 5 hours... But thats just me :p. I've never really watched a Nascar event, so I might have to see what all the buzz is this season.

that must have taken you all night to think of that.
I am no NASCAR deciple by any stretch, but if you think playing 2nd base or someone who plays hoops like Shaq is tougher or requires more "athleticism" than driving that car 6 inches from 42 other cars going 140-200 mph for 3 hours, not to mention it is hotter than hell in the car,you truly show your ignorance...
I'm not saying it is the most athletically challenging sport, but it aint exactly chess either.
just because you may not be interested in it, doesn't make it less of a sport

I just don't get it with all of this specialization. Most people like fast cars.
We all have our favorite motorsport, but for the life of me, I can't understand why those who like speed don't at least think all of it is cool. I don't have enough time to devote part of the day to all the disciplines, but I will say:
IRL
CART
NASCAR
Busch
Craftsman Trucks
IHRA
NHRA
Formula 1
Formula 3
Snowmobiles
Ice motorcycles
Bonneville Salt Flats
Pikes Peak Rally
24 hours of LeMans
Speedboat races
and everything else I don't care to list are ALL COOL. If you like speed, it ought to be appealing no matter what it looks like.

The old NASCAR drivers would not be good examples of athletes in spite of being in a sport that requires much endurance. The new guys do work out to keep their edge behind the wheel.

No I do think its all cool... I just think Nascar gets kind of old and boring after watching the same thing over and over... Any person that will drive a vehicle that fast for fun has a notch in my book.

I just appreciate all the races for their individuality. I like the sheer power and speed of drag racing, but I appreciate the skill and patience in NASCAR.

no more or less crazy than someone who would let Roy Williams hit them running at full speed while stretched out to catch a football.
Or stand in the batter's box, ala John Kruk, and let the Big Unit throw 105 around you.
I'm understand if it isn't your favorite thing, but it's not the simplified boring redneck sport you aluded to earlier. To each, his own. That's good enough for me.
The thread was really about any major sporting event you missed because of work/school/ sick, ect

I never said it was a redneck sport... so dont put words in my mouth. I only said I think its a boring thing after a while... Im not a big fan of watching cars go round and round for hours on end.

I took the wife to the airport today to go to the race
She kissed me and got her bag out of the truck, and says,
"I'll bring you a hat."
I didn't say a word, just gave her a dirty look and drove off.
next week i am going to Shreveport and park in front of some dice tables for about "eleventy billion" hours.
I need to cope for awhile...

I was born in North Carolina (NASCAR crazy state) and went to my first, and only, NASCAR race a few years back when I was in college. I went to the North Carolina Speedway at Rockingham, aka The Rock.
I can't claim to be a real fan, but I am familiar with the top drivers. I didn't realize how big of a deal NASCAR was until I saw it for myself in person. Tents and RVs as far as the eye can see around the stadium. Flags waving everywhere.
I'm not a huge fan, but I understand how people get into it having experienced it for myself.

I don't know all the details, but the gist is some of us knew he was a poster on a white supremist message board and it started hitting a head with some of his discussions with Wide. They really started to go at it towards the end in the BET thread. For a long time, we knew how he felt from reading his posts, but he tried to hide it well. Wide started calling him out at the end. I don't know when he got banned or the exact reason. I never asked the admins. I just knew he was gone one day in January when I checked to see if he was still a poster. I do that from time-to-time when I don't see somebody post.
