I'm really hoping N.Crowley makes a name for itself again with some retooling from their new HC.
Paschal did better last year than in recent history fielding a team with a new mindset....
I look forward to the new challenge in district that is Martin......
should compete at an even better level than last year and move from being called a scrappy team to what they deserve which is a really good team.

Even though they only won 2 or 3 games last year, Paschal came a long way.
For the first time in about 8 or 9 years, the Panthers didn't have one single player quit, or flunk off the team, not only at the varsity level, but at the JV and freshman levels as well. The varsity team started the year with 58 players, and they ended it with 58 players. Coach Cook is doing wonders over on Berry Street and Forest Park BLVD.
One of Paschal's losses was a 35-28 game to Weatherford, where they held a 28-14 lead with 8 minutes left. Somehow, someway, they let it slip away.
I'm interested to see how Paschal, North Crowley and Weatherford all do in their new district.

Russell will be featured more often and wants to be great.......this team will be faster than last year's and while Sergio Cantu is the incumbent at QB (throws a nice ball), Colby Listenbee is like a cross between Chris Matthews and Ronnell Sims so I expect him to take the QB spot. The incoming jr class is the best I have seen at Bowie. As freshmen..they held their own scrimmaging our undefeated JV team.
We finally have some HAWGS.........but at least one of them should be a DT (he is a beast and is being looked at by the big boys).
Me and my video camera will be watching you guys intently at the Herbie :ninja:
I love how you guys are so aggressive on defense. I mean man coverage against the spread? It was the perfect foil to Carrol's short passing game. Farmerfan commented that he thought it was a mistake Allen committed in surrendering the underneath stuff by sitting in a cover2 zone - I did catch peices of your Arlington game and I don't think you guys played zone but a few times. It was early in the year your front wasn't getting to Joeckel quick enough and he hurt you on some deep flag and go routes. I don't fault the secondary - In man your job is the short stuff and pray the pressure gets to the QB to stop the longer stuff.

Joeckel schooled our young secondary and the type zone we played had us looking like ducks on a wall........but we should have attacked him more. I think our kids were thinking more about the streak than beating Arlington. It's like they were looking past them since SLC beat them up early season. And no one was prepared for their sophomore (Dickerson). He had been on JV. Arlington has to get the most credit, it was their game of the year.

Cam is a player.....but this group is very good. Hard to replace what we had last year at the WR spots, but definitely faster in aggregate with a couple of inches lost in height. I expect names to be made this summer.

Hey now. Fuller has never met Erwin without having Perry guide him ;)
You know it's Coach Perry's game.
Fuller will have a QB developed whether he's a dropback or runner....and the kid will be prepared.
The biggest thing I look forward to seeing is the initial transition to a spread with read options.
Reid seems like he'd get the DC spot......don't quote me because I'm speculating. He'll look for guys that will lay licks but not let anybody behind them in the deep spots.
Kids will respond to both of these coaches.
Erwin is a very good coach........I don't have to tell you or most reputable posters that one.

Miller was the OC in '08 prior to Fuller. He's HC at SOC.
In all honesty......all of these guys are good coaches in their own right and many come from families of coaches, the only recurring theme among them is Coach Perry.
I think the theme will continue.
Erwin is smart enough to know more than the basics of anybody's game.
Whether the team executes or not is dependent on who he has more times than not.

I had the pleasure of meeting and kicking it with TT80 at the Bowie spring game tonight..........really cool guy.
There were some good signs...........Cantu throws a beautiful ball and there were a few good signs of guys that will catch quite a few including a freshman that broke the starting lineup.
Defense is very good and I look forward to seeing all of these guys on the same team. Linebackers really impressed me.
Overall size is decent on the lines......not huge but not tiny. I really was hoping to see more than we have though.
Far too many guys are banged up......I counted at least six guys that are core players.
I expect a lot from this team........plenty of work to do though.
Shame......an excellent player wishes to transfer to Bowie but that team's coach refuses to sign a release. He was at the game........

I was my pleasure meeting you as well. Coaches are always keeping key players back for one reason or another. I love the QB and at least one WR that hooked up a couple of times. His throws are effortless and really hit the mark. I saw a team that has plenty of talent and just lack a couple more beefy players to fill in where they may face a team with more size. Bowie has skilled players all over the field so they should be a team to kon with!

I don't post on here too often but I'm an AHS fan. I have wondered about whether or not they'd move Davis or Dickerson to the slot this year. I don't know which one has better hands but I hope Davis can catch because I'd like to see Dickerson as the primary ball carrier after seeing him break through as a sophomore last year. I'm excited to see what Onyegbule brings to the table at QB. He's a strider and reminds me of the kid from Sam earlier this decade. I think Devin Williams was his name?
The Colts don't get any breaks out of the gate this year. The first two games could test their patience with slugfests at PESH and at home against Coppell. Ringo at PESH always has his team in the upper portion of the area defensive rankings. Coppell just beat the snot out of Arlington in last year's playoff game.

Man, I don't know about that. Ha. That, and they will have a very stout running game.
Arlington has too much riding on Miles being a one-man-band and keeping him healthy. Combined with an extremely difficult schedule right out of the blocks, Arlington may really have to struggle to keep any kind of optimism by the midway mark of the season. If they get a break or two and win a game they shouldn't AND keep Miles healthy, then they have a great chance of finishing strong and having some confidence going into the playoffs. I'm concerned, however, that there is at least a greater-than-equal chance that a rough start could torpedo the whole season.
Arlington has a ton of younger talent on board - I really think they'll be loaded the next two seasons.....they just need to get through this one.

For the first time in 18 years, I expect to miss every regular season game in the Arlington ISD school district.....
Since my cheering alone (I am the 2nd most interesting man in the world) helped Bowie become a power, I am hoping that my magic mojo can work an even bigger miracle - turn my Midlothian Panthers from a team that could not even win a game in 4A to a powerhouse in 5A.
Since I will not be at any of the AISD games, I will predict the following scores for my old Volunteers (or rather, at 34, I am the old one now?):
Bowie 71 Arlington 3 - Bowie wins this one with no problem.
Bowie 63 Sam Houston 0 - If only that qb could transfer.....
Bowie 81 Lamar 5 - Payback continues for the next 18 year biyotches.
Bowie 95 Paschal 2 - Bowie snaps a fumbled punt for a safety for Paschal.
Bowie 3 Weatherford 2 - A week after that 'debacle' against Paschal, Bowie players decide to aim for the statistical scoring anamoly.
Bowie 23 Martin 21 - A Bowie 31 yard field goal with 0.2 seconds left seals the deal before 25,000 at Cowboys Stadium (game had to be moved there because both UTA Maverick and Cravens suck at having enough room for all the living).
Bowie 31 North Crowley 0 - North Crowley alone has the same number of state championships that the entire AISD does --- that number being 1. (see Arlington Colts 1951). Bad thing for N. Crowley is that the only relevant football is played in God's conference - 5A. Well, that, and the fact that they are just not very good.
Sarcastic Notes directed at district rivals meant to draw the ire of others (tongue and cheek for you Martinistas and Viqueens):
If Paschal is bringing you pancakes, North Crowley can always make you some bacon and eggs. You can always go outside of the district, and get your gravy from Grand Prairie High.....
Weatherford is still there to flip off your fans as they arrive at Weatherford stadium though.... circa 1995 or 96 (last time I went there and saw their students giving the bird to one Bowie QB Vernon Wells). Stay classy boys and girls! That's what Roos do! I heard Kangaroos were once used in fights against human boxers....
I still hate Martin, and I suppose I probably should harbor continued resentment towards Lamar's success..... but nothing cures that like seeing the alma mater turn the tables. Martin's cheerleaders were always good at spelling the phrase 'Can You Spell Exemplary?" for friendly display to the other AISD schools (just a friendly encouraging display), but everyone knows that even in the rare good years, Martin will always come up short (stick to baseball, volleyball, and hockey boys and girls).....
I give Lamar credit - they let their football team represent what exemplary was for many many years. I appreciate that, and I am sure Kenny Perry can take it from here (here being 2006 to the present and onward). Coach Fuller has great big bear sized shoes to fill.
Sam Houston - oh what can I say positive beyond the epic Southlake Carroll game that everyone wants to forget ...... moving right along...
Arlington, Arlington, Arlington - I actually kind of like you guys. Always thought the Green unis were great. Now, my sister lives just a few blocks away on Tucker, and her children will one day be Colts.... I suppose I can develop a soft spot for those lovely people from Old School Arlington.
Non-District: Odessa - Bowie fans don't understand what it's like to consistently be 2nd fiddle to a power like Permian..... but man -- we know what 5th wheel, bottom of the barrel, and getting the crap kicked out of us by Abilene feels like.
Desoto - Your new recruit from Bowie has about as much class as he does loyalty.... 0. Character guys like that always deliver the title, even if they sacrificed their character first.....
Skyline - Are we going to get another officiating crew composed of the uncles and grandpas of current Skyline players? Or will these be guys that just happen to live within 3 blocks of Skyline high? GO RAIDERS!
Finally, I end with this note: I lub you. Now where is my Shiner?

I don't have enough time to post here often anymore - rather, I chose to do other things, namely coaching ice hockey.... but I wanted to specifically give pied, rbethman, and other fans of the other 4 relevant (a.k.a 5A) AISD teams enough bulletin board material to last a month or so. The Bowie coaching staff (most of whom visit this board) hopefully get a chuckle, and not a headache.
If people can't tell it's in jest, and half-hearted attempt to jab at each of the 10 opponents, I guess thats just on them. I have connections to all 6 AISD schools.... so I don't know how much I can truly 'hate' any of them.
I'm pretty serious about Desoto's 'move in' though........... this kid and his dad sound like epic works of character..........
If by chance there are any Seguin fans that are offended, try 4A message board.

6 months of lurking... I couldn't help but respond to this one.....
Probably comes off that way. Not meant to be disrespectful, but a little humor is ok. The man built a great team and program. Like anything, us fans like something new(see college recruiting or the NFL draft). That hasn't been at Lamar since the school opened. Looking around the district it's nice to see Peach's infulence.
It's almost time. Going to be at the opening of Marauder stadium, likely sitting on the opposite side from Mrs. pied. Last time we did that, it didn't work out so well, 12/95.

District talk from FWST:
Will Arlington Bowie hold off Arlington High and Martin? Bowie, which won its district and advanced to the fourth round of the playoffs before losing to Abilene, is poised for another run. The Volunteers will have one of the top defenses in the area.
Senior defensive end Michael Amaefula already has around 15 college offers, safety Quentin Sargent has committed to Oklahoma State, and cornerbacks Malcolm Surrel, George Adams and Robert Zenon are returning starters.
But the other Arlington teams will test the Volunteers.
Martin has two great leaders on offense. Quarterback Russell Bellamy is headed to Purdue, and running back Danzel Williams is committed to Oklahoma. Miles Onyegbule, who is headed to Texas next year and is possibly the best receiver in the district, leads a strong Arlington High offense.
Sam Houston has several college prospects, and coach Kenny Perry's former offensive coordinator, Trent Fuller, is entering his first season as Lamar's coach. District 4-5A newcomers Fort Worth Paschal, North Crowley and Weatherford might not be as strong as the Arlington schools, but also carry the unknown factor.
Bowie also faces a rugged nondistrict schedule -- Odessa, DeSoto and Dallas Skyline -- but should be seasoned in time for the playoffs.

I went to the game vs Abilene at UTA.
I had minor discomfort on my big toe when it started to get cold... Just needed a long sleeve sweater and a light jacket, and I was fine.
other than that, it felt like home to me.
I live on the ice in my recreational time (temp just above an ice rink is 40's usually). So I didn't mind the cold weather game - in fact, the air had a crisp feel to it that I enjoyed.
I don't think weather had anything to do with the outcome. I think it was Sims and Sims and Sims and Sims............

I agree the weather had nothing to do with the outcome but it did
have a lot to do with balls not being able to reach the sideline.
Missing a player is a usual excuse in many of these type games and I would have used us missing at least three starters if I was trying to do that. The game was definitely more suited to Abilene's style.
Stopping them for one half defensively didn't make up for the quarter they had their way with us on the field and scoreboard but we did adjust.
Sims killed us, but Curtis did too.
The weather was typical for where I'm from (NY).
Best ground game wins 95% of the time.

I believe Martin has a lot more people (skilled and unskilled) coming back than Lamar. Plus Martin has 5 players going to big time D-1 schools including Oklahome, Texas A&M, TCU, Purdue and one other. How does Lamar stack up?

Where's the list of big time D-1 schools?
Right in the post or did you read it? But here you go:
DB/RB Danzel Williams (http://rivals.yahoo.com/Baylor/football/recruiting/player-Danzel-Williams-105367) Oklahoma
QB Russell Bellomy (http://rivals.yahoo.com/Baylor/football/recruiting/player-Russell-Bellomy-109426) Purdue
DB Devonta Burns (http://rivals.yahoo.com/Baylor/football/recruiting/player-Devonta-Burns-109652) Texas A&M
LB Deryck Gildon (http://rivals.yahoo.com/Baylor/football/recruiting/player-Deryck-Gildon-103854) TCU
OL Damon Martin (http://rivals.yahoo.com/Baylor/football/recruiting/player-Damon-Martin-113557) Kansas
Those are the ones that are verballed and been accepted. They are all rated three stars by Rivals. Rivals lists 4 others that have not commited and not ranked.
Euless Trinity has three 3 stars. 2 are going to Baylor and one to SMU. They have one unranked player committed to Oklahoma. They have three other players unranked that have not verballed.
Lamar has no three stars and no one committed. They do have 4 listed that are not ranked.
Now, peed, how's that for a list of players going big time D-1 schools? In my humble opinion, Lamar's varsity couldn't beat Martin's JV.
It's August. Enough of this pussyfooting around. Let the mud slinging began. http://forums.5atexasfootball.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Lord Byron let me give you a little back ground on myself. I am a t-sip, and you will not see me admitting that any of those teams, ou/a$m/etc. are big time programs.
I graduated in '89 from Lamar and am a huge fan, the problem is that I am now a bit older and as you can see my location is not in Arlington any longer. I travelled to many away games(including Midland/Odessa/Houston/Orlando) and saw many home games, at Cravens and Texas Stadium. My first kid was born in 2000 and that put a damper on my attending many games. It also coincided with their somewhat down turn, although that was a little later.
I say that because I want you guys to understand my comments. I wish I had more direct football knowledge to share about my Vikes, but the fact is unless they get better, they are unlikely to get more press. The less press they have, the less I will know about them. I will be seeing at least one game this year, and am excited about that.
I do expect that to change with Fuller. As to exactly why, I will struggle a bit to expand on for a time and more games played. In the end I am a fan, and I will not let the lack of knowledge stop me from being a homer and engaging in good natured ribbing with the losers from Central and South Arlington.
Lamar is back and you will need to deal with it!

The only reason Martin became good was because of Lamar's IC Little. The Lamar-Martin rivalry really seems to have blown up after I left. There was little interest int hat game, or no more than the other city teams except Arlington when I was in school. It sseemd like the Lamar-Martin game was almost as big as the AHS game the last few times I've been.

That being said, in my day there was the McDonalds food fight/etc. I think things have calmed a bit these days.
I completely disagree with you about IC Little. He was a very poor coach although somwhat better than the other coaches Eddie Peach let us have, Even Lamar fans told me they were glad that IC left Lamar.

Damon Martin was seen coming by to get his locker assignment and get fitted for his equipment at Arlington High this past week - sounds like wishful thinking that he might be transferring.I have no knowledge that he transferred to Martin. I just went to Rivals and typed in Arlinton Martin. Now I see my mistake. Becuse his name is Martin, he came up. Arlington High is in very small print.

Arlington High has plenty of its own D-1 talent as well
Miles Onyegbule-Texas
Laderice Sanders-TCU
Damon Martin-Kansas
Douglas Brothers are already gaining lots of interest.
Dickerson is stud RB gaining interest, and they have a couple of huge offensive lineman that started last year as sophmores-Robbins/Lysenko. AHS is looking good for years to come.

I hate Martin the most out of the other 5. So there you go. I even cheer for Sam Houston or Lamar over Martin now days....
Lots of bad blood between Martin and Bowie going WAY back - tied to Seguin, boundary lines amongst many other issues.
Seems pretty juvenile to me to hate another school over football or any athletic contest played by kids.

I agree with you about the quality of the Senior class at AHS. They have a lot of guys that made the varsity as sophomores and still had a fairly salty JV team. Onyegbule is one of the best wide receivers I've seen in the last 20 years. Is he going to play QB?

I agree with the post and the line of thinking that AHS has several pieces to put together another solid season. We've been a little spoiled the last two years though by watching 7 playoff games in those two years (3 in 2008 and 4 in 2009). You knew when last year started that the team was a legit threat in Region 1. I think Martin is that kind of team this year. That said, Martin wasn't considered a serious threat in Region 1 when the season began and look what they did.
Bowie friends, as long as KP is on your campus you're ALWAYS a threat in Region 1.

I think Martin improved greatly with the addition of IC. I also wish the sunnyside would stop blamin Eddy Peach for Martin's football shortcomings in the past. That conspiracy dead horse has been beaten enough. I would also like to remind the little warriors that IC was very instrumental in the hiring of your current coach.
I think the little warriors are loaded this year and if they don't shoot themselves in the foot, I can see a pretty solid run in the post season, especially if Trinity somehow winds up in D2 this season.
I'm ready to watch the little vols this season, because I think they are real salty on the defensive side of the ball and they have a running back that will give them the ability to control the clock.
Little colts should be okay if they don't get shell shocked at the beginning of the year. They are also going to be running the ball much more this season, maybe keeping their defense fresher.

Good to have you on the board for our AISD banter. Speaking of, where do the little vikings and little texans fall on your radar this year? In the one game I saw the Texans play last year I was very underwhelmed by what I saw. And the Vikings made what I think is a good hire for them but aren't they a program trying to do more with less?

None. The AISD always assigned some old, loyal AISD assistant coach to Martin jyust before they were ready ro retire so that they could get a better retirement check. They never had a previously successful head coacgh accepted even though many applied. One was a defending AAAA state champion. One was the head coach of Odessa Permian. Neither of those two made it past the first cut. IC was the best of the lot and he was a very poor coach. Wager is Martin's first previously successful head football coach. If he had been there in the 80s or 90s, he would have done just as well as he is doing today.

Little colts should be okay if they don't get shell shocked at the beginning of the year. They are also going to be running the ball much more this season, maybe keeping their defense fresher.Well, blueraider10, we've argued this before on a different thread. I will just sum up what transpired in the beginning. In the 80s anyone connected with the AISD knew that Eddie ran the AISD in the sense that whatever policy Eddie wanted, Eddie got when it came to AISD athletic policies. The AISD adopted a policy that I initially agreed with. They wanted to reward loyal AISD assistants by promoting from within. I thought this was a stroke of genuis. I thought that this would attract bright, young assistants. What young assistant wouldn't want to come to a district that rewarded loyalty?
It worked great in attracting young talent. In fact it attracted Wager. but the problem was that this talent then had a difficult task in beating the good ol boy system in rising to the top. Wager left. But the real problem was at the head coaching position. The policy of promoting from within apparently applied only to Martin. Martin was stuck with old AISD assistants such as IC little and Ronnie Lawrence. AHS went out and got the best head coach in Texas IMO in the coach from Cuero - a perenial power in AAA. They later got Eddie's son, who I think was and is a great coach. Bowie got the head coach from OD Wyatt and Kenny Perry out of one of the Birdville schools (Haltom, I think). Martn had a lot of very good head coaches apply but they didn't make it over the AISD assistants that had never been good enough to become head coaches anywhere else.
The person responsible for hiring Wager was the Martin Principle Laura Jones. She was in her rookie year when IC resigned the head coaching job at Martin to become AISD AD. When IC retired, he had to open the position for head football coach for at least 10 days as required by state law. He closed it on the 10th day. Why? Because he wanted his good old buddy, Ronnie Lawrence, to be the head coach and he simply wanted to limit the competion. But two good head coaches got in under the wire - the head coach at Odessa Permian and a head coach that had recently won the AAAA state championship and would win it again later. They didn't make it past the first round.
When Lawrence retired, Laura was a wizened veteran and had a game plan for overcoming the AISD's policy of sticking Martin with old AISD assistants. As Martin Principle, she was allowed to place a certain number of people on the selection committee. She instructed her appointees to go outside the AISD and get a successful head coach. Laura Jones was responsible for getting Wager, not IC little.

On the question of my thoughts on the little texans and the little vikes, I think you will see more offensive talent with the proud crowd than any other team in the district. The only problem is that they will also have to play defense and they will have to be on the kick off team and the receiving team. Rumor was that they had less than 30 kids during spring practice. It also can't help that this is the third set of co-ordinators in three years for the little texans. Gee lordbyron, this might be a good example of where they should have hired one of those tired old assistants in the AISD. I think the little vikes will be okay this season, but I think they are real thin in a couple of areas that could come back and hurt them later in the season. Trent Fuller was a solid hire, but it's going to be hard to improve on what they did last year.

I will be honest with you, blueraider10. I really like Lamar and AHS. I should. I have been to see a lot of their playoff games the last 25 years. When I go to the Texas Relays, those Bowie Volunteer boys and girls really make me proud. Sam has fallen on hard times of late, but back in the 80s they had great football, basketball and baseball teams.. I usually make it over to the Texan side of the field and strike up a conversation with some of their parents and remind them of their glory days and let them know I think they will get there again.
I would like to wish all of the AISD teams luck for the coming season. It is my fondest wish that the AISD teams win all their non-district game, finish ahead of those newcomers in our district and make a strong playoff run. If Martin gets knocked out early ( and I don't think they will), I will be folowing whicever AISD team that is left.

I see someone brung up Sam! I would've loved to see where the Texans program would be right now, if Kenny would've still been there and not left for Haltom. For some reason, he didn't have any success at Haltom but, not only did he quickly get Bowie on the right track, he also put Sam on the right track in a hurry and, Sam was on their way back to becoming "Big Sam".

You're going to see one heck of an offense at Sam for about 2 quarters, then you're going to a pretty burned out second half. You truly can't have the entire team play both ways in 5A football and be consistant.

I watched NC varsity 7-on-7 team at an early state qualifier.....Arlington's JV team would have kicked their rears (of course, AHS's JV was also state champs this year, however :))......not impressed whatsoever. If who I saw was NC's starting QB, they are in real trouble.
Weatherford will be competing with Paschal to bring up the rear in district play.
Four of the five Arlington teams will make the playoffs.....the question is, can Sam upset either Lamar or Arlington to make things VERY interesting for that 4th playoff spot??
Thank you, UIL!!!

Martin beat Allen by several touchdowns yesterday in thir scrimmage. Russell Bellamy (QB), the Purdue commit, and Danzell Williams (RB), the Oklahoma commit, picked up where they left off last year. Allen got two touchdowns in their first possession on a couple of long bombs but were pretty well shut out the rest of the way.
Martin lived up to their #10 state ranking. We're just a little bit excited over here on the sunnysde for the opening of the season. I wish good luck to all the AISD teams and pray that no player gets injured.

Miles had a great debut. He's not a one-man show but he was the best player on the field. Throws a nice deep ball (didn't see that coming), throws a sharp mid-range ball, but babies his short throws. Hopefully he cleans that up with reps. I came away super-impressed with the potential of the AHS offense. You're right, they do have multiple running threats. They also have a couple of pretty good receivers.
Putting up 41 points in regulation against the PESH defense was a great sign. Next they get the Coppell defense. Rough start.
As bad as the defense looked early, they looked that much better late. East put up 41 in regulation as well but only 10 of those came in the second half. They had a 89-yard TD pass on 3rd and long deep in their own territory about midway through the 3rd quarter. Then late in the game when Arlington muffed a punt at the 20 while trailing 38-34 the defense stepped up and didn't allow a first down, holding PESH to 3. Arlington then drove 70 yards with about a minute and a half to go to tie the game and force overtime.
They came into the year counting on big things from Miles and Sanders and both guys delivered in game one.

I need to see Sam do something against Bowie, Arlington, or Martin. Last year I was very underwhelmed with what I saw from them but I may have caught them on a bad night. A year ago most good offenses had their way with AHS. Sam didn't. Little texans are going to run into the same problem they have had for the past two seasons, just not deep enough to play all 4 quarters. Don't get me wrong, what they have on the offensive side of the ball is downright impressive, but with the Morales brothers pulling double duty along with others, it just won't work.
With all of the transfer issues in the world, it sure is nice to see the kids at Sam that all played together at Hutch still playing for the little texans. I just wish they could be about 20 kids deeper.
Not to change the subject, but where is the great Lord Byron/seagonowhere? I honestly think this last game might just help the little warriors. I've never seen so many penaltie on a football field. Martin deseved every one they got. Plano West got a lot also and I'm pretty sure they got some they didn't deserve. I'm thinking the refs thew some on West just to keep the penalty count differential reasonable. Martin had a ton of false starts. They did three in a row once. I think you can rightfully say they were "smelling themseles" but I thought it was just a case of them being anxious to live up to the highest ranking they had ever achieved. But there was a bright spot blue. Martin has NEVER won the first game of the seaon under Wager. Weve been soundly beaten twice by Mt Pleasant ( a little ole AAAA country school out in East Texas) and Mesquite Horn. Plano West is the best first team we've played under Wager and we almost won. so there is a bright spot over on the sunnyside.
The first thing that jumped out at me about Martin was that they ran out of gas before the end of the first half. I think a lot of that was because they had scrimmaged Allen just 6 days prior. Wager does not hold anything back in those scrimmages. I think he uses game one to continue getting his team into shape for the season.
In spite of that the game turned out to be pretty interesting. West concentrated on stopping Danzel Williams and did a pretty good job. We sure miss that big running back we had last year. Danzel threw a 50 yard touchdown pass on a reverse but, of course, it was called back by a holding penalty. With 4 seconds left Martin tried a 50 yard field goal. It looked good to us but it was wide left. That fifty yarder cleared the top of the goal posts by several feet. Martin will be a threat to score anytime they get inside the 40 yard line. You can expect to see a 60 yard field goal this season. The kicker is just a Junior. He kicked a 54 yarder as a Sophomore.
Don't worry, Blue, Martin will be there when district starts but they have a lot of work to do to catch Bowie. Looks like Evolution's enthusiasm is entirely justified if Odessa has any kind of team. I'm anxious to see how we do against South Garland. They may be better than Plano West but we will have 8 day's rest this time instead of 6.

Onyegbule/Dickerson tandem sounds and looks A LOT similar to the Devin Williams/Omarr Johnson tandem that Sam had back in 2002.
But, Onyegbule is faster, which is very scary!
Good call, and wasn't Scott Peach the OC that year at Sam? Miles, like Devin that year, gains 3 yards with each stride.

This week's 4-5A match-ups...............and my picks:
Arlington Martin @ South Garland ( Martin picks up their game)
Coppell @ Arlington ( Higher score favors AHS but this is an upset)
Mansfield Timberview @ Arlington Lamar (after a triple O/T last week, Lamar get's Fuller his first win)
Sachse @ Arlington Sam Houston (The amazing Jamal Turner show prevails)
Ft Worth Paschal @ Burleson ( Paschal is sentimental to me, but I don't think so)
Richardson Berkner @ North Crowley (Where'd NC go? there's talent in those halls)
Weatherford @ Aledo ( Aledo has to pissed about losing to them last year)
Desoto vs Arlington Bowie @ Cowboy's Stadium 9/6 ( Bowie declaration )

Martin is struggling........
I know it's just predistrict but this is unexpected by most.

Struggling may be a little too kind for this Martin team. South won 27-14. The game was closer than the final score as Martin was on the South 20 with less than a minute to go. On 4th and 5 Bellamy threw a pass to the right sideline that would have given Martin a first down with plenty of time to score. He thew to Hawthorne and only missed him by about 15 yards. South scored a meaningless touchdown on a dejected Martin team on an 80 yard run in the closing seconds.
This Martin team is on pace to be the most disapponting team ever at Martin. I know, Wager's teams start slowly but this was pathetic. This team is very poor at the fundamentals of blocking, tackling, throwing and catching the ball. They can run a little bit and they have one heck of a kicker.
Gloom and doom is pretty thick over on the sunnyside these days.

I can't believe I'm doing this, but nobody needs to hit the panic button just yet in regards to the little warriors. I'd be concerned, but I think it's too early for the sunnyside meltdown. I don't have anything to base this on at all, but I think it has something to do with playing on Thursday, combined with them going into the season being a favorite(other than LB/seago, the little warriors have never gone into a season with these expectaions), and they have had a history of starting slowly.
I know two things, Wager can coach and the sunnyside has a lot of bandwagon fans. I think he'll right the team, maybe not win district, but they are still a threat.

I agree with you........can't throw out the baby with the bath water.
Martin needs to play a game at a time.......especially winning games they are supposed to.

Thanks guys for making me feel better but with 15 starters back I was expecting a better start. But I do know that Wager gets off historically to slow starts. I know he's never won a first game of the season at Martin. I think he uses the non-district games more of a tuneup than any coach I have ever seen. He's got 8 days until his next game with Flower Mound and then a bye week but he opens district with Bowie and then Arlington. He's certainly got his work cut out for him.

Good lord, I had to pull this off of the bottom of page three.
District took it's lumps this week.
Week 2 Predictions:
Sam over Lake Dallas. Last team with the ball wins. 49-42
Azle over Paschal. IDK, just a guess.
Bowie over Skyline. Bowie defense comes back to life. KP won't look like that two weeks in a row! 24-21
Arlington big over Timberview. 49-21
Burleson over Weatherford.
Duncanville laps N. Crowley three times. Would be a much better basketball game. 49-14
Marcus over Lamar. Vikings still haven't learned how to tackle, not a good matchup for the little vikes. 41-21
Martin over Flower Mound. No reason for this pick, other than I just can't see the sunnyside go 0-3. 35-33
I was at Marcus' practice yesterday. We have them right where we want them. They are cocky and were talking crap about the Vikes all day. They are more into their opening game for the stadium than playing the well-oiled machine that Fuller is preparing on the north side of Big A.

Go Vikes!
Martin's opponent this week is Flower Mound. They are 2 - 0 having soundly trounced McKinney Boyd and Jesuit. They look to be as good or better than Martin's first 2 opponents. Martin's two previous opponents are unbeaten. This would certainly be a good time to make a statement or at least get a little confidence back going into district play. The bye week next week should help also.
Not for sure what your criteria for judging whether or not a fan is on/off a bandwagon. If the bandwagon is Martin making the playoffs, I am still on that bandwagon. If the bandwagon is assuming that since you made a deep run in the playoffs last year and have just about everybody back and you expect to make a deeper run, you better betcha I'm off that bandwagon.
