The BEST teams from South of SA are NOT gonna be the 5As, FORSURE.... i would go with CC Calallen 4A, GregoryPortland 4A, EdcouchElsa 4A, Sinton 3A, PortIsabel 3A.......EdcouchElsa (EE) is KNOWN for their TOUGH brand of FOOTBALL, they're NEVER very big, but they're ALWAYS SUPER FAST....the went 12-1 this past season, losing to NB Canyon in the 3rd rd....PortIsabel is a LITTLE GIANT....i dont know what those kids do over there, but they KNOW HOW TO WIN....
In 5A, i'll go with Harlingen, LaJoya and CC Carrol that are probably tops....
when you start listing SA, in the mix there are just TOO MANY GOOD TEAMS form that area to list.....Judson, Madison, SmithsonValley, O'Connor and Taft to name a few...

2006 Season
SA - Judson and Smithson Valley on tradition alone. What do they have coming back? Obviously both lost a lot to graduation and may not have great experience coming back, but does it really matter with these two? Also look out for O'Connor. They have the program thing starting to go like Judson and SV and they have a ton of great talent returning. One more: Churchill. They probably have some of the best talent, but they just can't seem to come through when it counts. They are just hard to figure out.
Coastal Bend - Probably CC Carroll, but they have been inconsistant. Victoria Memorial has been one of the biggest busts ever in Texas HS football. What happened to the second coming of Judson that everyone predicted when they combined schools with more than 4,300 students? Lots of talent, just can't seem to put it together. I guess enrollment numbers aren't as important as once thought. Me personally, I think quality comes before quantity. Victoria has both and nothing to show for it!
Valley - Its always unpredictable down there. LaJoya seems to be coming along and getting more consistant. Harlingen and San Benito are OK. But it seems they will always be (to quote CC Carroll head coach Terry Morris) "genetically challenged" against the San Antonio schools in the playoffs.

Carefull going there. I tried to argue the same thing during the season and people are relentless.
The rest of what you put seems pretty good. But SA is going to have a lot of surprise teams also. All of the 26-5, minus Lee, are going to have good teams. Its gonna be a fight.

The best teams in SA are well known. However, if you want to know the best teams from south of SA, you are well advised to ask an insider, because the rest of the state generally doesn't follow the South Texas schools. Please note, I am talking about programs here, not my predictions for next year.
I'll start with the RGV:
5-A: There is really no debate here. Harlingen is far and away the most consistently good program by any measurable standard-- winning pct, total winning seasons, most total wins, most district championships, most playoff appearances, most playoff wins. One or two teams might have better a playoff winning pct., but they are nowhere close in total appearances. The numbers simply don't lie, and it is usless to argue about it. La Joya has in recent years put together good teams, but time will tell if they can keep it going like Harlingen has-- they have made some great strides, and I give their program a lot of respect. San Benito had a really good season two years ago, but historically usually sits at home during the playoffs. No comparison between San Benito and Harlingen, they are rivals and Harlingen leads the series by something like 56-17-11. Donna was good VALLEY football team under coach Evans, but was a perennial playoff flop, Brownsville Rivera is much the same (Although Rivera under coach Chavez seemed to have a magic "Harlingen Bullet"). I know I am a Harlingen fan, but if you keep track of the records, the numbers say what they say, and any Valley fan who has been watchin for years knows it. Harlingen also has the most success (though still meager) against upstate teams, and when they played in a CC district for two years, they were the only valley team to make the playoffs. Mission has a good history but really fell off the map after the schools split, and Edinburg High usually puts together a playoff team and has had some playoff success, including a trip to the semi finals in 1998.(Maybe 1999). Almost every season some valley 5A squad has a decent year, is proclaimed a new powerhouse, then is never heard from again. Sharyland is constantly being hyped as the next power, and they had success in the lower ranks, but so far nothing much in 5a.
4a-- Currently Edcouch Elsa puts together fine teams, although 4a is the weakest district in the Valley. E-E, however, along with Port Isabel and Harlingen, makes up the Holy Trinity of Valley football. They are usually unfortunate and catch CC Calallen or Gregory Portland in the first round, however they broke the Coastal Bend Curse last year. Other than E-E 4a is usually wide open, and usually not very good, although there is always an occasional surprise. No consistency in 4a Valley football other than E-E.
3a-- Port Isabel is the Valley's best program, hands down. Harlingen is second only to PI in the measurable statistics program, and PI often does beat teams from upstate, including powers like Cuero. Port Isabel has made multiple semi final trips and almost never exits in the first round. La Feria is a distant second in valley 3a, sometimes Lyford, Rio Hondo, or Hidalgo has a decent squad.
2A-- Really no team worth discussing, although I mean no disrespect to those hardworking kids-- there is simply almost zero playoff apperances and success with valley 2a.

Corpus Christi/ Coastal Bend:
5a-- CC Carroll always has a decent team, better than nearly all valley squads, but they have the bad luck to play the SA area schools early. When the Valley had only one or two 5a districts, Carroll usually won the first round playoff games. Back when Victoria played in the district with Corpus, VHS dominated and Victoria Stroman was weak, but the new, combined Victoria Memorial has not found a groove yet, desptite big time hopes. After Carroll, King, Ray, Miller, and Moody usually compete for the remaining play off spots, and do not have a track record of great success in the playoffs. CC does have some great baseball.
4a-- CC Calallen and Gregory Portland are the powers here, with CC Calallen having the edge. Calallen has one of the best programs, numbers-wise, in the state, but usually loses in the semifinals to a Houston area school. Still, coach Danaher is a Texas coaching legend. The third place 4a team is usually no pushover either. The valley 4a schools have a very poor track record agains the CC 4a schools, and CC 4a football is far better than CC 5a football.
3a-- I don't follow Coastal Bend 3a football, so I can't comment.

It didn't seem that long ago Clark and Churchill was a dominant force in the SA area. I'm still surprised the Callallen has reach an enrollment of 5a #'s. Heck in the valley "genetically challenged" is a great word to describe the feeling of going to play the schools up north. That's why on the playoff spot, they want teams to travel south

I could care less what one thinks about me like i said its all TALK I dont care much for talkers...and i dont bring anything up so i dont know what you are talking about. if im stupid then so be it like i said i dont care....I came here to learn about up state football (a long time ago too)..not to hear about how genticlly challenged we are, or whatever else you guys want to crack at us..I think the people who should let it die are others...it is getting old..we already know how you feel so why bring it up..
its really that easy..thats how easy it can be..but you guys want to keep throwing in jabs and well i can do the same cant I..all you have to do is keep your stupid comments to yourself and none of this will happen..
thats how easy it is..now the question is..are you guys genticlly challanged enough to do it??

I think when they refer to "genetically challenged" that, (yes you can name 2-3 kids on each team in your area that are Big Fast and Athletic) it is because the teams don't have the 10-15 Big fast and Athletic kids on the roster. It's just as a whole the Valley does have smaller teams if you take the averages of height and weight. And is St. Joes RB really named CoCo??? or is it a nickname?
its a nickname they gave him..

Ahh...That would kind of be a cool name to have. Everyone would know you, that's for sure!
yeah, i dont remember his real name, but he was AWSOME!!!! as far as RGV teams, we are usually NOT as fast as SOME MOST UP STATE TEAMS, sometimes we are though, i think we'd benefit ALOT from BETTER coaching and facilities....i think we can be competative....heres an example..
In 1990 Mission HS the Eagles beat Madison in the Regional Final by a score of 55-17, Madison EASILY had MUCH MUCH MUCH better athletes and Mission ONLY had 1 REALLY GOOD PLAYER....it was with Lupe Rodriguez at QB, NOT Koy Detmer....there was 1 DIv I athlete IF THAT...
Today, the RGV is still the same, we got some good kids, NOT A WHOLE BUNCH, but ENOUGH, but the problem is that we run CRAP schemes like the WingT, Nasty Slot, Power I and the WishBone...and that crap dont work, UNLESS YOUR Euless Trinity, Galena Park or Converse Judson and have HUGE OLines that can BLOW everyone off the LINE....if you NOTICE, the ONLY teams from that RGV to have beaten SA teams, Harlingen, Edinburg and Mission.....all have 1 THING in COMMON!!!!! 1 thing....THEY COULD ALL PASS THE BALL...I THINK if the RGV coaches would grow with the times...LIKE SVs' Coach Hill did we can really progress....only tme will tell

...dude, your not gonna win RGV. I know its fun to put up a fight, but this is getting rediculous. You have not put down any facts, you have not proven anything except that you like to say the same thing over and over and over again.
Seguin, you need to lay out some stats also. Find some stats from the Judson-Seguin game and compare them to the Judson-Harlingen game. OR SOMETHING.

Seguin, you need to lay out some stats also. Find some stats from the Judson-Seguin game and compare them to the Judson-Harlingen game. OR SOMETHING.

RGVBadboy - Sorry, but you must be corrected. That 1990 team WAS lead by Koy Detmer. Rodriguez' last year was 1987 when Mission beat San Antonio Sam Houston and played Willowridge in the regional round at Judson stadium. In '90, Mission beat Madison and advanced to the state semi-finals against Aldine who ended up winning the state championship and was voted the #1 team in the nation. That was Sonny Detmer's second year as coach at Mission and Koy was a junior that year. To say that it is just because valley teams don't throw the ball as the reason why they don't advance is a bit shallow. Plenty of valley teams have thrown the ball over the past few years and plenty of up north teams have done well with running the ball. Valley teams just don't have the depth of talent and possibly the support and tradition of the successful upstate teams such as Judson, Katy, SLC, etc. An aggressive and sound defense is probably more important to a team to advance in the playoffs than what style of offense is being run. SLC not only had a great offense, their defense was very solid. So was E. Trinity's.

yeah, i dont remember his real name, but he was AWSOME!!!! as far as RGV teams, we are usually NOT as fast as SOME MOST UP STATE TEAMS, sometimes we are though, i think we'd benefit ALOT from BETTER coaching and facilities....i think we can be competative....heres an example..
Yeah, I think coaching has ALOT to do with winning, before Padron came to O'Connor we SUCKED! I think our combined record for the first 4 year was something like 6-34 or something like that with no playoffs, but in the last 4 years we are 34-13 with 3 playoff appearances. I think a coach will move down there one day and turn one of those programs around, but the Kids have to buy into the coach as well.

1988 :)
Harlingen vs Judson (5A)
Harlingen 20, Seguin 13 (area)
2005
Seguin vs Judson 21-0 :(
Seguin had 115 yards of total offense against judson. :(
Judson had 236 yards on the night.
"The Matador offense struggled to get going all night, finishing with only 115 yards of total offense. Quarterbacks Caleb Ramos and T.J. Hartwick combined for a 10-for-19 night, throwing for 49 yards and an interception. Running back Isaiah Sneed led Seguin with 38 yards rushing on nine carries."
2005
Judson vs Harlingen 37-15 :(
Harlingen had 261 yards of total offense.
Judson had 288 yards of total offense
"We just made too many mistakes," said Sanchez, who completed 6-of-17 passes for 59 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and 149 rushing yards on 35 carries with one touchdown.
"We were able to move the ball on them, but the turnovers hurt," he said.
The turnovers were a big difference, as there wasn’t much difference in total yardage. Harlingen finished with 261 total yards (202 rushing, 59 passing) and Judson finished with 288 (231 rushing, 57 passing).

Hey, lay off Seguin they are the greatest team ever to have never accomplished anything. One day they will be good and SM can say I told ya'll Hell would freeze over. You guys are argueing over who has the best second rate team. In my opinion you should both look up to Lee, they have won a State Championship. We all come on here to support our teams, give each other a hard time, pass time, or whatever, but seriously must we argue about the second tier teams. Lets talk about the Great dynasties that have won a state championship Judson, Roosevelt, Lee, and Churchill. Remember the great one's do more than make the play-offs, they practice on Thanksgiving and play in December. O'Connor is a program on the rise and will remain that way as long as Padron is there. He is a great man and a great coach. You guys are lucky to have him. Regardless of your talent level year in and year out he and his staff will be able to keep you in games with their immaculate game planning. To qoute the great Charles Barkley "Forget the stats. I don't care about the stats... I watch teams play". Individual game stats are pretty much useless... especially in football.... there are so many different variables that go into each individual game it is impossible to measure a teams worth on the stats of it. I have seen both teams play... and Seguin would beat them by 21 and that is pretty much all there is to be said.

You crack me up Seguin. The one thing that is true that you post is that the Valley has, overall, smaller and slower teams than the ones up state. That is an undeniable fact, especially the "smaller" part. But, you insist that Seguin would blow out any team the Valley had to offer, and your only back up for that statement-- "I just know because I watch the teams play". Then, surprise, surprise, you pick you rhome team/
RPM just posted proof that, against a common opponent, Harlingen did AT LEAST as good as Seguin did against Judson, a state finalist. At least Harlingen scored some points. They also held Judson to less yards, and put up much more yards on offense. (Incidentially, that was good enought for Rocket TRN)
Bottom line, we don't know who would win between Seguin and a good valley team, but your opinion does not constitute solid evidence. Seguin, you are just a homer who wants to feel better about your school's pretty pathetic playoff history in recent times, so you take pot shots at an easy target. We in the Valley will freely admit that Judson, Smithson Valley, and definetly the elite north Texas teams are light years ahead of us in HS football. But we don't have to take crap from a Seguin fan, who really has no evidence other than his own BS (and of course, "coolestkidever's opinon).

Seguin may have had a weaker playoff history, but you also have to keep in mind that Seguin spent many years either in 26-5A or facing the likes of Austin Westlake, Austin Bowie etc. I dont think any Valley team would have a better playoff history if they had been in these district. Seguin is not state power, but they do deserve some credit.

lol the stats to the judson game are just dumb. Larado united played a good first quarter against SV. better than any other team all year but that is because Sv and other SA teams dont see the valley teams as a threat. any team is not into the game is going to play worse. i know that when we were in the playoffs we would watch way more tape on seguin than a valley team and we didnt even know if we were going to play them.so if high school coaches are more worried about seguin than a valley team that kind of makes me wonder who is better. and if you want to play the stats game i can play that. i dont have to give my "opinion" but it thought i would be nice and stay away from the whole "stats" thing for your sake.

Seguin makes it to the 3rd round of the 5A playoffs.

Seguin schedules a Valley school in nondistrict

Seguin's best shot of playing a Valley team would be to come out as district champions in their district so that they can play a 2nd tier team from 26-5A. Anyone know how well Seguin will do this coming year as opposed to this past year? How did Seguin's JV do this past year?

Our JV is never good because we are not loaded with a lot of talent and any player who is pretty good plays varsity from his sophmore year. I think they were somewhere around .500 but I am not close to 100%.
Seguin has a solid shot at winning district this year. This years class of seniors were coach Carsons first group of freshman and that has to count for something. We are returning pretty much the same team. We only lost two note worthy players... one being Safety Thomas Wright and defensive tackle Micheal Castillo.
We are returning 2 starting D linemen. 2 starting Linebackers and 3 defensive backs. Key returning players on defense are an all area middle linebacker who got honerable mention all state,an all area defensive back who got all state on 5atexasfootballs.coms all state team, and a defensive of end who had 16 sacks.
On offense we are returning 3 out of 5 o linemen, our quarterback who took most of the snaps to end the year, our running back, and two key recievers. Our key returning players on offense are first team all district (although not that great) running back Isaih Sneed and reciever Calvin Caad( an absolute stud).
