Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't like this at all. Takes away the "Purity" of High School sports.

I am not a big proponent of All Star games. This is a money grab by IMG in my opinion. I would be surprised if the THSCA endorses this.

Well football is already off-limits and from the sounds of it, it looks as if basketball and baseball and some other sports are going to be made up of all-start teams from that respected state. What good is that?

I do think the purity of high school sports has already been taken away though. Look at all the marketing firms that have gotten involved with football and all the huge basketball tournaments that go on. I am sure teams leave for some baseball tourneys in Florida and Arizona as well. The purity has long been on its way out and I think you are right when you say eventually it is only going to be completely gone.

If this takes off and becomes succesfull, it's only a matter of time before they start looking at the REAL cash cow, Football.

How the heck would the determine how to do it with football though? Just take the top 2 teams or what? That would be interesting. With baseball and football you can play several games a day. Same with volleyball. Track and CC would be easy to settle. Just have one meet. Prelims on Thurs and finals on Friday or something.
Would the Texas schools agree to take part in this event if football was involved?

I'm not for something like this at all... The paragraph below from the story is the main reason.

The moves heighten concerns that high school sports are following college athletics' evolution from extracurricular activity to high-stakes, high-pressure commercial enterprise. "How much longer is it," says Dan Lebowitz, executive director of Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, "before we're at the middle school level?"

To me, sports at the high school level should not have this level of pressure or national sports marketing tied to them...

Schools both here in Texas and across the nation are not helping themselves though when the agree to take part in events such as the Herbie and other events that go on. HS athletics has evolved into what it has because the coaches and schools agree to let it do so

Farmer, I agree with what you are saying... While the SLC games against Miami NW and such were "exciting" with a lot of build up, I also wondered at the time if all of this was too much for high school sports. The kids handled the pressure pretty well, but my real concern was more from a perspective of the commercialization of high school athletics.

I'd sure hate to see high school sports start chasing dollars, instead of a experience for the kids to learn how to be part of a team and how to pull together. Let the kids be kids...

Texas has a rich history of giving the HFHS the bird and I think they will continue to do so. I would settle for D1 - D2 unified championships in all sports here in Texas.

Why would we do this, we already know that who ever wins Texas State Championship is the National Champions ;)
