View Full Version : Your Top 10 Things Most Remembered From The Last Decade?
We had some close family and friends over this evening and we talked about what we would most remember from this past decade...and without question it was September 11th, 2001. That was 3 days before my 30th birthday and our decade was changed from that day forth. My little brother was called to arms and we've only seen him 3 times since then and spoke to him only a precious few times more than that. That was the main thing mentioned as a whole, but another by family and more directly tied to us and me was my 1st sons death in 2006. He and a friend of his died in a single vehicle accident just outside Purvis, Ms. where he lived with his mom. He was a Sr. at Purvis High School and would have been 18 a few months later.
Those were my bad memories from this past decade and what made me appreciate the good things from it even more.
So anyway, I wanted to make a top ten of the things I will most remember (good and bad from the past decade) and hope you all will join in and share your's as well.
1. My daughters birth in 2004.
1. My 1st sons death in 2006.
3. September 11th, 2001.
4. My brother leaving us after the attacks on Sep. 11th.
5. Seeing the look on my 2nd sons face when we walked him outside blindfolded and showed him his new car.
6. UT's National Championship in 2005.
7. Carroll's domination after moving up to 5A.
8. Moving back to Sherman in 2007 after being gone for 14 years (and seeing all the grass and tree's...then smiling)
9. Lance Armstrongs utter domination of the world from 2000-2005.
10. Emmitt Smith 2002. Nuff said.
So, whats your's?

Wow I had to think on this one.
1. September 11, 2001. The panic of not being able to get through to my sister who lived on Long Island at the time.
2. Fall of 2001 started the journey of being involved with the youth department at church. They have taught me so much more than I will ever teach them.
3. October of 2002 turning 40 and realizing that this is fun. And I am not old.
4. November of 2003- Parents move to DFW to be near children. I had not lived near my parents since 1980. The joy at realizing what a good friend my Mom is.
5. Easter 2004- My youngest son's baptism. He looked so sure and mature for only being 9.
6. May 2008- Celebrating 20 years of marriage and thinking Wow time flies when you are having fun.
7. June 2008- Oldest son's high School Graduation
8. August 2008- Taking oldest son and leaving him at college. Amazed at the young man he had become and missing my little boy.
9. May 2009- The death of one my oldests good friends. Childen should not die.
10. July 2009- Death of one our very dear friends. I wish I could hear one of his jokes just one more time.
Overall a great decade. I am glad 2009 is over and am ready for 2010 to be a banner year. :)

7. My first Houston Dynamo soccer game. Went in the stands with the Texian Army and than later got on the sideline and got the whole team's autograph and Patt Onstad gave me his gloves.
8. Celebrating downtown for the Spurs' Championships.
9. Travelling with the football team to every game in 2007 and 2008 seasons.

1. 9/11/2001. I still remember that morning at the PO, casing mail and hearing it all come down on the radio...spent the whole day running in and out of businesses looking for people with TV's on and new news. Remembering the days afterward wondering about new attacks...the skys with no planes in it...the utter wonder about the unknown.
2. The Longhorns National Championship in 2005 spent watching it with my very sick buddy who died last year...priceless memory.
3. I know Garland won it's state title in December 1999, but it carried over to the 2000's.....invigorated my love for HS football......brought back memories from the 60s' as a child....again, priceless memories.
3A. Finding this 5ATexasFootball.com in 2004...changed my life....srsly.
4. Grandkids born, especially the one we are raising, in 2000.
5. Gastric bypass surgery in August 2000....lost 140 pounds and saved my life.
6. Watching the Katrina situation 24/7 due to being off my feet from the gastric bypass surgery....I learned a lot about people then....and preconceived notions...and how dirty politics really is.
7. Garland Girls softball winning back-to-back state titles....proud times.
8. The last political campaign...
9. My two shoulder surgeries and gall bladder surgery in 2006, 2007, and 2009, respectively.....and my wife's gall bladder surgery....put them together to conserve choices.
10. My two sons going to war. Son #1 to Iraq in 2003 for a year and he just went back for the second tour in October for another year. Son #2 went to Afghanistan for 13 months in 2004....he now is in the reserves and is a Dallas cop.

1. I came out to my family on June 15, 2000. Toughest thing I ever did in my life but I look back and wonder what I was so afraid of.
2. 9/11 It was a crazy day. I worked at the HEB gas station and it was crazy busy with people thinking the world was going to end. I literally had money all over the floor in that booth and I filled so many bags that night full of money to be taken away by the armored truck.
3. Hurricane Claudette hitting Victoria in July 2003. It was a small category one hurricane but it caused my apt to nearly burn down and I was homeless for a week. It was crazy seeing the town completely dark at night and we had a curfew.
3. Receiving my BBA in 2004 and MBA in 2007. The first in my family to graduate from college.
4. Moving to San Antonio in 2004. This is where I really grew up and found who I really was. So many great times (and bad) in SA.
5. Going to my first State Championship game. It was 2002's Southlake Carroll vs Smithson Valley.
6. Realizing in the 2000 season that I no longer have a HS football team to cheer on :(
7. Moving to Dallas in 2007. I really love it here. Looks like the DF Dub will be my home for a while. Plus, we play the best football in the state ;)
8. Being able to afford to travel.....love San Francisco, NYC, Chicago, San Diego, and many others.
9. My first international vacation...Went to Italy this past June. Got to see the Pope and tried to cure myself by drinking holy water (I have pics!) :D It didn't work. More international trips to come!
10. Losing 100 pounds (since HS) by diet and exercise and running my first half marathon this past December in 2 hours and finished in the top 30% of all half runners.

First of all, SLC, so sorry to hear about your son. That had to be so hard. Our kids should outlive us and not the other way around.
As for the top 10 things:

6) Beatlefest in Las Vegas (and meeting Pete Best)
7) Texas winning the National Championship

That happened to me in the last decade and I don't remember it, but I remember waking up a few days later.
