TYLER LEE-COLERAIN BLACKED OUT ON ESPN-U IN TEXAS
(Please credit this story to KTBB Radio and Smoaky.com-Copyright)
KTBB Radio and Smoaky.com has learned the Friday, September 9th high school football game between Robert E. Lee and Colerain of Cincinnati will not be available on ESPN-U in Texas.
I've learned the University Interscholastic League and the Texas High School Coaches Association have decided against removing their ban on live telecasts that are not during the championship weekends.
Two sports marketing groups, Titus Sports Marketing of Plano and the Fahlgren Marketing Group in Columbus, who put the Ohio vs. U.S.A. together, have been in negotiations with the UIL over the past several weeks, but according to my sources, they've been unable to change the long-time tradition that allow only championship games to be broadcast live in Texas.
The Ohio High School Coaches Association approved the live broadcast earlier this month.
Lee and Colerain both won state championships in 2004, and are scheduled to meet at just after 8:00pm central time on Friday, September 9th at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
I don't know whether or not the game will be offered as "tape-delayed" or not.
I've also been told negotiations will continue with the U.I.L., but the THSCA has already been very steadfast on not allowing live games during the regular season or until the championship weekends.
The radio broadcast will be available "live" on AM600 KTBB, with our broadcast crew of Randy Johnson, Craig Smoak, Kerry Ainsworth, Mike Laroux, and I.

I thought the rule was that the game couldn't be played at the same start time as other games in Texas. I think they started the SLC-Ryan game at 8:30.

May have started it at 8:30, but it was moved to Thursday, because of the UIL rule.

I would love to see the game as well, but think the entire concept is a little silly since the actual teams that won the titles aren't playing. Not that it isn't cool to see Texas boys share the whoopin's throughout the nation, but to hype the game as it being between the two reigning State Champs is misleading.

Yup. UIL rules do not allow a Friday night game to be shown live. I thought because this was an out of state game and part of a special weekend, they might make an exception. Obviously not.

Mr. David Smoak
Sports Director
KTBB/ESPN Radio
1001 ESE Loop 323, Suite 455
Tyler, TX 75701
Dear David,
As background, TITUS Sports Marketing is a sales and marketing representative to the Tyler ISD. Earlier this year, we negotiated Tyler Lee's participation in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge with Fahlgren Sports Marketing.
TITUS does not own rights to the event -- television, radio, merchandising or otherwise. TITUS Sports Marketing was not officially involved in either the press conference in Tyler or Columbus to announce the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge. In both venues, it was clearly stated that the event is owned by Fahlgren Sports Marketing.
We are only managing the event for the Tyler ISD as it relates to the official traveling party from the moment it leaves Tyler on September 8 until their return on September 10 – under the terms of our contract with the Tyler ISD. Our goal every step of the way is to maximize the experience for the Tyler ISD and to guarantee that every item in the contract we negotiated has been fulfilled.
If we can assist the community of Tyler in any way regarding Tyler Lee’s participation in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, I think we have shown a willingness to educate and assist there, too.
In addition to our relationship with the Tyler ISD, TITUS manages a corporation’s annual contract and sponsorship of the University Interscholastic League’s state championships. Our relationship with the UIL spans a number of years and various partnerships. As early as January, we made the UIL aware of Tyler Lee's expected participation in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge to make sure that we were following all UIL guidelines as it relates to Tyler Lee’s travel, agenda in Columbus, game officials, etc. We also contacted the Texas High School Coaches Association -- and invited both parties to the press conference in Tyler when Fahlgren Sports Marketing officially announced the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge.
Since its contract with the Tyler ISD was signed, Fahlgren Sports Marketing has asked TITUS to help in contacting the UIL to assist with identifying the steps necessary for Fahlgren Sports Marketing to gain a waiver or ruling for live TV in Texas of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge.
Following every conversation with the UIL (including our meeting on Tuesday in San Antonio in conjunction with the annual NFHS meetings), we have reported back to both Fahlgren Sports Marketing and the Tyler ISD on what steps remain for Fahlgren Sports Marketing to receive a waiver or ruling for live TV of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge. Fahlgren Sports Marketing has been clear in both press conferences (Tyler and Columbus) that one of the ESPN channels will telecast the game live nationally -- and throughout the state of Texas provided the UIL agrees to a waiver. Such an agreement has not yet been reached, and the window for such an opportunity for Fahlgren Sports Marketing will be the UIL’s State Executive Committee meeting in Austin in August.
If you have any questions regarding our responsibilities with the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, please feel free to call us.
Sincerely,
(w/o signature/ via e-mail)

Very tough place, did you know I have never seen Lee lose at Rose everytime I am there? I have only saw Lee lost 1 game in my 3 or 4 years ever in anywhere which was losing to The Woodlands 2 seasons ago and it was very close game! 50-48 in 3 OT! And since when did we get a "pathetic" defense...Cause everyone I've talked to is saying our defense is better than last season and at the Green/White game they showed that they are.

I agree Lobo, at this point losing to LP may be in the players heads. If Ivory and Mcgee are healthy this year and LP and Lview meet again I think they will have their way all day(Just like Mcgee did last year). They are the guys who can end the losing streak. I can't wait till Ivory has an opportunity to avenge his performance form last year against Lufkin. Look for him to have a very BIG game.

35-28 and 14-0. Sounds like two good games to me. I didn't make any excuses as to why we lost those games, but scrubs are your excuse as to why the first game at Abe was so close. Even two TDs isn't a blowout, you make it sound as if it were.

The first game of 2003, was one of the worst games Ive seen between Longview and Lufkin a long time.
The 14-0 contest was all defensive. I still think that Lufkin caught that pass in the endzone to end the first half which wouldve given them a 21-0 lead but nothing can be done about that now.
But besides the 2003 season, they been pretty close.
2004: 31-21
2003 |2|: 14-0
2003 |1|: 35-21
2002 |3|: 24-21
2002 |2|: 29-20
2002 |1|: 23-12 (God that game was horrible in that pouring down rain for Homecoming..But Ill admit I was one of the fans that stayed for the whole game and didnt leave like a lot of people did)
2001: 21-7
2000: 30-22
1999: 17-7
So I mean its been 14 or less points since 98 when we beat you guys in OT.
Now that I look back Im surprised we stayed that close to you guys in '99 and '00 seeing as how our record was then. But never the less, Lufkin has deserved and earned each and everyone of their wins over us. Do I think the 2004 game was a lot of the mental that we cant beat Lufkin? Of course I do but Lufkin won the game hands down. They made the plays when they needed to and they took advantage of those 5 fumbles (sighs) that we had. I cant wait to see what you guys have in the scrimmage on August 20th but Im more importantly hoping to see you guys in regional once again. But I wont go that far ahead to predict that we'll both be there.
On the shut out comment, you are correct about the last time us being shut out being the 20-0 loss @ Lufkin in 1995. We ourself shut out 7 different teams inbetween that streak.

Pretty selective memory there Lobofan. The score last year was 31-21 Lufkin even though Longview led 14-0 2 minutes into the second quarter. So in the last 34 minutes of the game Lufkin outscored Longview 31-7. I know you gave the Pack credit but a lot of Lobo fans act like it was a fluke.

Ack didnt notice I put 34-31...shouldve said 31-21.
I think a lot of Lobo fans are just so sick and tired of losing to Lufkin. I know I am.
Lufkin has had our number no question about it. And yes we know Lufkin is gonna be good every year we play them..but our guys are so used to losing to Lufkin something always seems to happen to use to cost us the game.
You cant tell me had we not fumbled 3 times in the first quarter that we would not of been up more than 14-0. We were killing the Pack then. Thats why we were so mad after the game. We were beating you guys and we fumbled our win away because of a dang broken hand.
Do I think we can beat the Pack this year? Of course I do but I also said that we would beat the Pack in 04. And in 03 And in 02. Its getting tiring of saying that I think we'll beat them only to be let down.
Last year's game wasnt a fluke. Lufkin won the game obviously. They made the playoffs and proved why they should be 13-0 at that time. Dont get me wrong I went out to Waco and support Lp all the way againist SLC. For some strange reason when you guys lost I even started crying for you guys (What the heck happened to me there). But I want to win. And I think most of Lobo fans would agree that the thought on my mind and the goal I want to accomplish this season the most..even if we dont win State is to beat Lufkin.

Of course yall more than likely woudl have been up by more if not for the fumbles, but no one knows if you would've won the game. It's been about "what ifs" for Longview over "the streak". But most of the games have been good ones, espically in the playoffs.

I know that during that 1st qtr I couldnt believe what I was seeing. We were sitting in the grass behind the endzone so it was really hard to see what was happening along the line of scrimmage but I had not seen anyone push our defense around like that since Aldine Eisenhower in 2000. Hopefully we will have a rematch this season and break another Homer Bryce record for attendance. That was crazy! People everywhere and a lot of them werent even from Lufkin or Longview.
