Well, I am disappointed that Katy lost. I had predicted a loss, and I guess the game basically played out like I thought it would. Even so, it is hard to watch your team lose.

Katy was not a great team this year. They struggled on offense all year. Their offensive line never came together. There are many things that occurred in the game tonight that non-Katy fans would not recognize, but basically, it spells that Katy's effort in this game was a complete circus.

Abilene was great. They are probably the best team in the state this year. Them and Trinity.

Katy was probably a top 10 team. But their performance tonight was strange and comical at times. Busted plays. Illegal substitutions. False start penalties. Tight end changing jerseys and playing tackle. Really? Really. Kicker change. Sophomore QB making 2nd start of career.

Katy didn't look ready to play.

The defense, which is the back bone of this year's team, did not seem to be ready to defend Abilene, IMO. Naturally, they would need help from the offense. But they didnt' get it. The offense was a circus.

Katy's defense settled down, but it was not going to be enough without help from the offense.

The Sims cousins were as good as advertised. But I thought the whole Abilene team was really good.

Katy was not.

Katy will be back. Katy will be loaded next year. But like we learned this year.....if there is no offensive line, then nothing else realy matters. Katy really needs to have an O'line to be considered "loaded". So I guess, I'll have to wait and see.

I will not question the effort of these boys. Effort was there but no answer for the Abiline offense on a consistent basis. They had speed which beat us on every one of their scores. The penalties were very frustrating and not typical of a Katy team. Several times big MO was stopped by a penalty. All that being said the Eagles put together a total team effort and are very deserving of the trophy.
With regard to personnel moves you will not find me calling Coach on Monday to discuss these. He made these moves for a reason and I trust he had good reason. Great season Tigers, can't wait for the next one.

I am not saying the coach should be questioned. What I am saying is...

if your coach is making changes in the week of a championship....

then something must be amiss. Coach gave a tremendous effort with what he had.

As for Katy penalties not being "katy like"....

hmmmm. This year they were pretty common.

And we know what the result was. You cannot make mistakes of that nature when playing a great team like Abiline.

Congrats to both teams. Katy played well defensively, but, yes struggled offensively despite good pressure from Abilene.

As simplisitic as the Eagles O looks at times, it is not, and it was on full display tonight. I honestly thought Katy played great to keep AHS to 4 td's. Great win for Coach Warren and his staff.

Great season Katy - you will be back strong next year for sure, and so will the Eagles.

The teams that have won the big show, know how difficult it is to win it. Katy simply never overcame the issues that have plagued them all season. It speaks volumes of a program to deal what they dealt with this year and still make it to the championship and make a game of it in week 17. The bottom line is that you have to be fundamentally sound to even have a chance against a team like Abilene. Abilene was and Katy was not last night. Congratulations to Abilene, they are very deserving of this championship.

Well, regardless of how you spin it, I cannot say that "Katy played great to keep AHS to 4 TD's". Katy did NOT play great. We've seen Katy greatness in the past-that wasn't it. But nobody wins all the time. Katy will have to regroup like everybody else.

Dude, just take the compliment and give credit to your opponent and to your own team. Katy did all they could but were just overmatched against Abilene's great athletes. Katy's TDs came from a trick play and near the end when Abilene went prevent. The score could have been a lot uglier. But Katy fought them all the way. The Soph qb had a great game. But the Sims guys were just unstoppable in the end.

Katy was a great team this year and I have to give your coach credit because his game plan makes up for what the boys lack. Truth is we seen that your defense is not very fast just put in good position to slow down a fast pace offense. You cannot coach against that kind of talent the qb and running back had. Abilene was not only talented, but well coach and I seen a qb and rb who can go to the next level. I would like to give the heart award of the night to number #11 on katy defense. He gave it his all and more. Truth is Abilene was a better football team than Katy tonight and anyone who watch the game can tell you that. We were one touch down from a blow out but your coach who I think is brillant change some formations up to counter abilene attack style offense. Guys they whoop the number 3 team in the nation cedar hill 45-17. Hold your heads up!!!!

I was pulling for my friends over at Katy last night and can identify with the feeling of making it that far and then having a less than stellar performance against a great team and some truly amazing athletes. R. & H. Sims reminded me of Will Cole from 2006. Amazing athletes, and the rest of the Abilene team supported their performances very well. Great job, Abilene.:notworthy

This being the first time I have seen Katy this year, I can say what I saw last night was not the typical disciplined Katy team. The procedure calls and the substitution infractions were just way out of character when considering the Katy teams of the past. The effort and heart were there all night, just not the discipline. It killed too many drives last night. I was really surprised to see that.

It was very easy to see that the Eagles' players were very focused and intent on winning that game last night. I don't think any team, even a typical Katy team could have stopped your guys last night. Congrats, Abilene!

Congrats to the Katy team and fans on another great run this year.

Ace79603, yes your fans were loud and you had a big crowd. You may even have had more fans than us. Your team was well oiled and ready to play. I want to give credit where it is due. In my opinion, you are the best team that we have seen in years. I was also pleased to see that cheap shots and late hits were all but eliminated. In fact I believe that the late hit penalty you received was not warranted. On the replay it appeared that he was trying to grab our guy and keep him from flying through your bench. It is that kind of hard play and good sportsmanship that will keep your team on top for years to come. As coach Joseph said, “The best team in Texas won the football game.” We hope to see you again next year. Enjoy your win and your bragging rights. I am proud of our Katy team. They have basked in the glory of a handful of championships. This is your turn and your year. Just don’t get too used to it because we will be back.

Great season for both teams, and congrats on winning it all Abilene!!!

That was a great first game to watch too. Lake Travis dominated the game when they played Austin Westlake and won that game I think by 21.

Tough loss, Katy. It's hard watching your team lose a st. champ. game. But Katy fans should be proud of their team. They made a game of it even though they fell behind in the 1st qtr. Katy fb is still going strong & will be back next yr., I'm sure. Congrats to Abilene Hi--I don't think any team in the nation could beat Ab. I'm proud as can be that a West Texas team won it all this yr.

No, I think that "Truth" understood the post. He was disputing me.

I apologize for the characterization of my post. See the problem is, I am an anti-homer. This puts me in a rare position. So, very often I make posts that are in response to fans' opinion of a team, rather than the team itself. I guess it is my way of combating all the hyper-homerism.

I naively want to have conversations, but on message boards...well. I think you know what I am saying. 90% of posters really just throw reality aside and try to argue for their own school. And that is the fun of it, I guess.

I do most of my talking thru PM's because that is the only way you can get someone to calm down and really talk to you about stuff. People are willing to drop their shield and be more truthful.

The comment "Katy was not a great team.." had a very specific context meaning and I should not have used that sentence in a broad forum like I did.

I went to the game last night and first and foremost I have to say Congratulations to Abilene! This state championship will be great for the city and I'm very happy my team won! Also, Congratulations to Katy, you played a very hard fought game. Here's what I have to take away from the game:

1.I have to say that Katy's defense against Herschel Sims was phenomenal!!! No other team has played Herschel as good as Katy's D has. Except his one touchdown run Katy kept him contained. Good job scouting and preparing for him but with the focus on him his cousin, Ronnell Sims, was set free and man did he tear it up! 223 yards on 28 carries and 3 touchdowns! Even he didn't realize he had that many yards. I guess you can only stop one of them and not the other. Amazing job against Herschel though, never thought i would see him in check for a majority of the game.

2. #4 on Katy is FAST! I do not know his name and according to the program there is two number 4's on the team so i wasn't sure of his name. But he was GREAT! His speed is what took me away as he made many A-High players miss on his returns.

3. I lost a tad bit of respect for Katy fans on my trip home after the game (I live in Houston). I stopped at a Buc-ee's, and of course it was full of Katy fans and some of them were less than friendly. I was very surprised of some of the comments I got just for wearing my A-High hat and shirt. Now i realize this is a very small percentage of Katy fans so i do not hold it against them. Most were teenagers, some adults though.

Obviously, every school has it's share of misfits. I read of some obnoxious Eagle fans on the Riverwalk but every Katy fan I ran across after the game were gracious in defeat and gave congratulations.

Katy defense played an excellent game. They adjusted quickly and were able to hold Abilene scoreless for two quarters. The only path Katy offense had against the Abilene defense that worked was passing and it was not employed enough. It seemed like the intent was to try and control the clock by running and that wasn't gonna work against Abilene's line.

Haack strikes me as a good play-action QB in the making. Maybe he should spend some time with Dalton for some pointers during off season.

Abilenes's QB and running backs were incredibly fast and tough to tackle. Looked like Katy was trying to contain greased hogs.

Great game Abilene!! Best team in D2 period. I knew Katy was going to have problems after attending the Abilene vs Cedar Hill game. The Abilene offense was executing then and Katy's was still floundering. Oh well, if you look back in the earlier week's posts I picked Abilene to win by 10 points. I was pretty close.

there are always going to be sore losers and sore winners. after the game on the ride home (in our katy covered truck) we gave some abilene cars the thumbs up, then not 2 minutes later another abilene truck came by and gave us the "thumbs down" and started pointing at us and laughing.

it goes boths way no matter the teams IMO.

As someone who's been to quite a few games, and seen quite a few fan bases, this Katy group is right up there with the best. I posted this in the "Abilene vs State" thread, but I'll repeat just a part of it to answer this. A good portion of Katy fans stayed after the game was over, after their runner up trophy was presented, after their players left the field and after many of their own fans had left the game. Why? To clap and cheer and offer congrats to our team after beating them. After taking away their 3 peat. After ending their senior player's season with a loss. Im kinda harping on it, but I dont know if we wouldve done that. I dont know if I couldve done that. I was complimented on the team on may way to the car, and recieved nothing but praise on our team and fans. I'd bet money the ones you ran into were fans leaving late in the fourth. I hope you stuck around long enough to see what I saw, and that was a least a hundred (probably more) Katy Tiger Fans cheering for our Eagles when they were presented with the trophy. As a whole they're sportsman and class. Its hard to lose. Its harder to lose in the playoffs. I bet its hardest to lose this game. I'd give them a little breathing room and chalk it up to the game.

I want to congratulate Abeline High and all the players. They showed up to play and deserved the win. As a class of 93 graduate and player, this was the first time I have ever seen Katy lose at a game. They were the best team for sure. One thing about Katy is that we are not bad losers, and we stick it out till the end win or lose. The fans were great and the loudest I have ever heard them. Hope we will see each other again next year.

Yes. Thanks dragonfan. As far as most of us are concerned it is all about the kids...like you said yours and ours. I hated seeing the boys not get the win, but I won't stay sad too long. After all we have had the pleasure of supporting our Men in Red for 16 games a year of Katy football for the last three years, and into December more years than not the last decade or more. The Katy band was awsome!!! As a ex band parent the Eagle Band has just not had it the last 3-4 years. Big game on big stage last night and IMO what the Eagle band did was lack luster and disppointing.

Careful what you say, eagle87 will come to walkers defense, call him and tattle on you!

Read my post on the other topic started about how Katy won the halftime show.

Congrats ro Abilene!!! The better team won.

While Katy contained rb Simms (except for one run) while the defense had no answer for qb Simms. I was hoping the Tiger defense or return teams would get or set up a score but the Eagles had no turnovers and great kick/punt coverage.

Both schools had large and loud crowds which made for an excellent atmosphere. With many players returning for both, maybe we can do it again next year (hopefully with a different result).

On the topic of classy fans, the Abilene people I met after the game were gracious in victory.

LOL, doesn't bother me. My kids long gone and I usually don't get into these topics. But enough is enough. The fans around me were also upset and disappointed that the Eagle Band has been over shadowed by every band we have seen all year. My only concern is that the kids get the very best experiance they can for all the hard work and time they put in.

I'd give them a little breathing room and chalk it up to the game.

you sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. I was part of what you describe above and i thank you for your kindness. "The Section" that I run with are always as you describe. We bleed Katy Red, but all the while we enjoy what all the kids on the field are doing not just the ones in Katy Red.

Good post, and I agree. You can't judge by the outlier few, but rather by the norm. The norm for Katy are good people who care about their kids, their football, AND your kids as well.

thank you sir!

if you will reread my post I was picking on the Katy poster for typing that sentence in his post. Classic denial.;)

I think Katy was a great team myself otherwise they would have been at the house watching the game like everyone else
No I was agree with you I just should have put on post instead of replying. Have a Merry Christmas

When Abilene took Cedar Hill to the cleaners in round 3, I believed that Abilene would take State. I wish Cedar Hill had been there instead, but have a huge amount of respect for the talent of Abilene's player and coaching staff. Congratulations Eagles on a fantastic season!

Great post. Your team has nothing to be ashamed of. The punter has a future somewhere. Man, he's got a leg.

I am not saying the coach should be questioned. What I am saying is...

if your coach is making changes in the week of a championship....

then something must be amiss. Coach gave a tremendous effort with what he had.

As for Katy penalties not being "katy like"....

hmmmm. This year they were pretty common.

So exactly what was the issue with the Senior QB for Katy (I'm assuming that is what you mean by "changes in hte week of the championship")?

I wouldn't tack anything from Haack. The kid played above and beyond his abilities for a sophomore QB being put into a stressful situation like a Championship Game. If anything, this game has already made him a 'seasoned pro' when it comes to the pressures of high school football playoffs. I'd expect him to take full control of the team next year, and put Katy back into another deep run in the playoffs next season.

What was up with #88 going to #73, I had heard that the starting tackle was hurt and the moved the TE to tackle? Was his back up not on the team?

The Katy fans were the loudest I've ever heard... I'm sure part of it was being in the dome but they definitely brought the noise..!!

I was in the enzone and both teams brought a lot of loud fans. It was a great enviornment. Congrats to both teams for being in the game and all praise to the Ailene Eagles.:notworthy

A question for the Katy informed about something that I was not understanding during the game. That is that on the qb sweeps, the Katy olb's were playing to force the run to the outside. It seems that with the speed of the Sims kids, this would benefit them more than the Katy D. Would it not have been better to try and turn it in so the speed difference between the Sims' and the lb's would have been reduced somewhat by not having to run as far outside to try and get to them?

No....he was moved to tackle earlier in the week.....(Issues with Oline)...I think they made he change numbers before the game started.....not sure why.

Sideline is the 12th man....string them out and not give up cut back lanes.

In everyone of those sweeps, I saw the contain man getting sealed up top behind the line of scrimmage sealed to the outside. So in effect R. Sims would cut inside of that contain man and break out afterwards while Katy's DT and LB's were sealed towards the inside or having to attempt a cut across field five yards back to no avail because of Sims speed.Once Sims got five yards downfield that second gear would kick in.

But the olb's were constantly sealed to the inside with the blocker on their outside shoulder. This never would string it out......just bump it out a little.

I figured Katy would drop back the rush and make Sims beat them with his arm, that was his weakness.
