How do I get rid of it?
Normally I would do a system restore or Spybot Search and destroy or Malwarbytes Anti-Malware and I would have no problem. For some reason now, when I try to do a system restore, it says I have no restore point and the Spybot and Malware wont even start up for some reason......
I know I can get help here.

Normally I would do a system restore or Spybot Search and destroy or Malwarbytes Anti-Malware and I would have no problem. For some reason now, when I try to do a system restore, it says I have no restore point and the Spybot and Malware wont even start up for some reason......
I know I can get help here.
The deletion of restore points may be caused by any one of the following by-design conditions:
You run out of disk space on the system drive or on any one of the available non-system drives, and System Restore stops responding and stops monitoring your system.
This behavior causes the system to delete all restore points in an attempt to free up disk space. However, you have probably already received a warning about running low in disk space prior to this point. In this case, when sufficient disk space is freed, System Restore starts to monitor the system again. At this point, it creates an automatic System Checkpoint.
Note If you have a multiple-partition computer with a drive that has almost no free space, this drive may cause System Restore to stop responding all across the system and to delete restore points. However, this only occurs if you have reached the minimum disk space that is allowed and if you perform operations on monitored file types. Examples of such operations are upgrading, uninstalling or installing programs, moving, and deleting or renaming files. If your drive has almost no free space but you only perform operations on non-monitored files, System Restore does not stop responding.
You manually turn System Restore off.
If you manually turn System Restore off on the system drive, all restore points are deleted, and you receive the following warning message:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track and undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?
Yes No
If you manually turn System Restore off on any non-system drive, all restore points on that specific drive are deleted, and you receive the following warning message:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore on this drive. If you continue, you will not be able to track or undo harmful changes on this drive.
Do you want to turn off System Restore on this drive?
Yes No
When you turn System Restore on again on the system drive, it immediately creates a System Checkpoint. When you turn System Restore on again on a non-system drive, it does not immediately create a restore point on that drive, but monitoring resumes immediately on the drive.
You upgrade from one operating system to another or you reinstall the operating system. The upgrade might be from Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition to Windows XP or from Windows XP to Windows XP.
After you run the Setup program, you will have to run System Checkpoint, but the restore points you had under the previous operating system are gone. Windows does not let you return to an older version of the operating system by using System Restore.
Note When you upgrade, you might still see some restore point files and folders in the <drive letter>:\System Volume Information in Windows XP or under the <System Drive>:\_RESTORE folder in Windows Millennium Edition. However, these restore points are obsolete and cannot be used as they do not appear on the Select a Restore Point list on the System Restore page.
If you start the Disk Cleanup utility and you click the Disk Cleanup tab, a System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores entry is available. These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them. If you choose to clean up and delete these files, you will no longer see them under the folders that are mentioned earlier in this article, and the option to delete obsolete data stores will no longer appear on the Disk Cleanup utility.
You start the Disk Cleanup utility, click the More Options tab, and then click Clean up under System Restore. When you do this, all restore points (except the most recent one) are deleted.
You are running low on disk space, but not so low that System Restore stops performing. System Restore deletes some of the restore points, but not all of them. This occurs because System Restore uses a First In First Out (FIFO) process to decrease the size of the data store to approximately 75 percent of its maximum size when the data store reaches approximately 90 percent of its maximum size. The maximum size may be the default size, or it may be set by the user. System Restore performs this deletion regardless of how much disk space you have.
A restore point reaches an age of 90 days. The restore point is then deleted because 90 days is the default time to live.
You manually reduce the data store size. This triggers the FIFO process to delete some restore points to accommodate the newly-resized data store.

I have had unBELIEVABLE luck with the new Microsoft Security Essentials. It has removed bogus stuff from my outside customers' PCs.
Might give it go. Don't cost nothin.

I have a ton of diskspace....atleast I did the day before yesterday. You think the virus uses up disk space? I will check again when I get home?
Can you still get Internet Access on this PC?
If so, DL the Microsoft stuff and run it.
If you can not get to the Internet from this PC, DL the Microsoft stuff to a USB stick, install it on the bad PC, and try running it.
If your PC is so stove up, no programs can be downloaded or Microsoft Essentials will not run, you may need to start in Safe Mode, load the MS utility, and run the it.
The fact that Spybot or Malwarbytes won't run, tells me you got a nasty aggresive bug. Might even be using your PC for a home base, so to speak.
No need to make this more complicated than it has to be.
At least, not yet.

I will add this: I was accessing a guest network today, here at work. I signed on to 5aTexasfootball.com, and guess what? I was greeted with "Your PC is infected, yada, yada, yada................, Click here for a free scan yada, yada, yada.....................
Is there a chance, that one of the servers that 5aTexasfootball.com uses, MIGHT be infected? That is the way it acted. I had five other IE windows open at the time, and none of those windows showed any sort of error.

It's happened to me as well, but only on an occasional basis, not each time I come on.
I don't get the pop ups anymore....and I couldnt download what you sent me, but since then my PC is super slow and it want save restore points.
Your PC is slow, because the program is still lurking.
Your PC won't download the software, because the program is still lurking.
Your PC won't save restore points, because, well, you get the idea.
:)
Go to another PC, and download the Microft Stuff to a USB stick. Try installing it from the USB stick, to your Infected PC. It will probably NOT work, for it might still see anything coming from USB as a threat. IF it doesn't work, re-start your infected PC, and start in Safe Mode (F8 while your PC is booting if I recall; you are using XP? Vista?). Once your PC boots to safe mode, THEN try installing the Microsoft Security Essentials from the USB stick to the sick PC. It SHOULD install then. Once you get it installed, then try running it from Safe Mode.
If you still have problems getting it installed or running, I think Registry Edits are in order, or modifying the startup files in MSCONFIG.
These things can be real time killers.
It's happened to me as well, but only on an occasional basis, not each time I come on.
Yep, it will be random. The key is to NOT let the software "repair or modify" anything. When you see the screen let it do it little speel, or "Alt+Ctrl+Del" to the Task Manager, and End that particular task.
I just close the Window, and everything seems fine. I did a complete scan just for good measure. It found nothing.

I was hit an hour or so ago, but I was able to remove a couple of files in my system directory and it seemed to clear it up. I scanned the files with McAfee and they passed, but if I tried to open the XML file it knocked out my IE processes, so I just removed the 2 files. Now I login to this website with a less privileged user on my PC.

We have been looking into the issue since the first couple of reported instances a few weeks ago. It is most likely sneaking through one of the ad rotations. We will analyze that further and see what action we need to take specifically.
What would help us additionally is if people took screenshots when/if they get infected and sent them to us so we can nail down the source. It is like trying to find a needle in a haystack otherwise.

I'm new to this forum, though I have been a lurker for awhile. About six weeks ago my internet provider GVTC in Smithison Valley started blocking
the forum part of this website. When I called them about it they said whoever is hosting the forum has some open ports and GVTC's security has detected Malacious activity through these ports. And they will continue to block the forum until it is fixed. So I can only read the forum at work. I hope this helps the Admins.

If it is modifying the windows registry and your antivirus cleans it after a scan then the part that is in the registry will respawn if you do not do a registry clean up.

However, they did identify a Forum board feature that could allow a user to enter malicious code through a posting. This type of code has the potential of impacting another user's PC directly without infecting the site itself. Therefore, we have disabled the "allow HTML" feature within postings to eliminate this as a potential source for malicioius activity. Any past HTML entries in postings have been disabled for extra assurance. The HTML feature is not something that our members have used extensively and will not impact the most valuable functionality within the Forum.

If it was something in the ad rotation, the entire site would be blocked and there would be other sites impacted as well. These ad rotations are used on several web sites.
We are continuing to address the issue and may need to take the board down for a little bit at some point today. I will let everyone know when/if that occurs.

I often have survey things, including this one, pop up and usually X them out with no trouble. I get them most often on espn.com or msnbc.com. I don't think I've ever had one pop up here.

I got it about two hours ago on my personal computer, with Firefox.
Will attempt the Microsoft solution.

3 hours later, we're clean again.
I ran Semantec and Malwarebytes to no avail.
The Security Essentials did the trick. Scanned for over 2 hours, then killed 3 bugs.
Thanks for the help from the gurus.:heli::notworthy:yes:

A properly prepped PC won't get them either.
That REALLY makes the pop up maker pissy, seeing as how they are aiming their popups at PCs!
PC Counter terrorism, is you will.

My machine was still acting slow and sputtery with pop-ups when I hit this site this morning, so I ran Malwarebytes again. 17 malintended items were found.
Whoever invented the process of inflicting viruses and malware on folks that are just surfing the net should be shot...or at least kicked really hard in the nuts for a day or two. Complete and utter nonsense...

My evil brain sometimes sits and wonder how much money Legit ANTI-Virus companies, pay covert companies to create viruses (the threat).
To some people, this is their K2.
Because it's there.
Think viruses are bad? Try getting rid of a bad install of a anti virus!

They're either pranksters, phishers, or simply bot-netting your computer for DDOS attacks.
