It's.....THE SIMMS!!!!! Game.
H. Simms is a back like Will Cole in 2006; he has the 'it' factor. Get ready, only a junior.

I didn't see a thread so I started one.
even though Im a Houston guy..it wld be cool to have a West texas team back in the state title game..it seems the power has shifted to the metroplex and other areas for the last several yrs. Also..I have heard a lot of stories about the Permian pogram also..and I used to work with Chris Comer ( great Permian FB..from the late 80's and obviously the "FNL" era). Its obvious from his stories that there is a lot of pride about the ol' MOJO program). I wld not mind Abilene finally humbling Katy really..Im a Mayde creek alum and enough is enough. LOL

Yeah, Comer was a great back for Per. back in the day. I just heard the half time stats, & it's not even close. I was impressed w/ Klein's 1st drive, but it was mostly all Ab. in the 1st half. I'm glad to see Ab. having the kind of success they've had this yr.

If Klein played their D the first half, I think the Bearkats make it to state. They couldn't stop them early and it hurt them. That's going to be a long bus ride home, the announcers on TSRN made it an entertaining finish.

Again - what can you say about Klein? They complete two long 4th down passes on their final td drive. They then get the ball on their 8 with 9 seconds left. Pass to mid-field, spike it with 1 second left, then complete a pass to the 1 as time expired.
Hats off to Klein - no give up in them.

Klein did make good adjustments at half. Interception in endzone in the 3rd hurt AHS. They score there and it is different game. That's why they play the game.

If that was indeed the case, I think it was a calculated risk, that although in the end worked, could have backfired terribly and caused a whole different outcome if not for a yard...

I don't think that is the case. Yes the offense did get conservative when Herschel was out for the two series but remember they drove to the 5 without him and Ronnell threw the INT in the endzone.
Herschel came back in for a few series later but there was obviously something wrong with him. On one play he bounced to the outside with no one around and was not able to turn the corner. Uninjured he would have been off to the races.
Herschel's injury was all the help the Klein D needed to get some confidence.

I wasn't there, but AHS was a tipped pass in the end zone from going up 36-7 with 11 minutes left. I think you would have seen some heavy shut down at that point, so, maybe they did it mentally anyway.
Still unreal to me that Klein passes for well over 160 yards in the final 5 minutes. That would be a concern for me if I'm Coach Warren. Why in the world were they not rushing more than 2?

I dont. A few mins into the fourth we started rushing two and putting everyone into deep prevent. At 29-7, Warren was playing to hang on for the win, while risking as few injuries as possible, and while I completely agree with his decision I HATE seeing teams play prevent. On the other hand I cant tell you what it was like for those few moments seeing Sims on his back and not getting up. Props to Klien for not giving up, and ALMOST making us pay for that decision. You are a good team, with good players. I cant believe how many 4th downs you guys converted. How many was that...more then i've ever seen in one game. Anyhow, you are a well coached team that refused to give up when most teams would have accepted their fate. As far as shoulda woulda and coulda's.. Klein was throwing everything they had on offense. A double reverse flea flicker...i think???? Tons of trick plays on top of the many 4 down trys. If the games closer, I dont see your coach calling those plays or going for it on 4th that many times. Oh well, no need to get wraped up talking about what was, when we are blessed to have one more week talking about what will be. Congrats Klein on a great season and a team full of great players. :notworthy

One thing that someone needs to relay to Coach Warren... All a prevent defense prevents, is winning! It almost cost Abilene big! :p

Nope just saying that Kline made it a close game after we got conservative..
All I am saying is that the way the fans are posting about it, it sounds like AHS got skeered and went conservative to try and hang on.;)

and you are exactly right...I understand the thinking, we've forced them outta the run game in their wing T and with 6-7 people playing coverage we should be able to shut down the pass. But with enough time, these athletes are going to get open and the qb is going to find them. I dunno, I pull Sims without changing the defense. It had been working perfectly ALL DAY with no sign of life outta Klein. Either way, it wasnt up to me and it worked. Im glad to have won and glad that in the end it didnt cost the game.

What a great game. Congratulations to Klein on an amazing season, and a well fought game.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter - which is what makes PO football so special. It could have gone to 36-7, but it didn't. Family could have scored rather than be tackled on the 1, but he didn't.
AHS is in the final game. Klein made a valiant effort, but it came up short. Congrats to both.

I may be wrong but that was the last time Tony Curtis touched the ball in the game. After Sims was hurt we started throwing more and also started running Ronnell more. I don't understand why Curtis wasn't put in to the same roll Herschel would have played had he been in the game.

LOL!!! That's funny.
I am not trying to stir anything up but am really just trying to understand what the fans are posting here about it. I know the fans don't speak for the team or coach, but, saying they backed off to avoid injuries brings 2 thoughts to my pea-brained mind...
1. If the team keeps playing full force, Klein will beat the crap out of us.
-or-
2. Playing at less than full speed is usually when kids get hurt.
Abilene has a very talented, well coached and determined team that earned the W today. But, I would think SOME Klein fans could consider it a slap in the face for SOME Abilene fans to come on here and imply that the ONLY reason the game was close was because Abilene took their foot off the gas. If they did that, and looking at the way the game went, could one then say it was bad coaching by putting the team in the position of almost going to OT?
Either way, it worked out for the Eagles. Great job to win the game and great job by the Bearkats to keep fighting.

WOW!!!! What a game!!!! No losers in this one.....two great teams that left it ALL on the field!!!
First off......CONGRATS EAGLES !!!!! Way to dig deep and find a way to win against a very good and determined Klein team. One more game and you are champions.
Second....Congrats to the Klein Bearkats. What a team you guys have. One of the most determined and inspired 4th qtrs I've seen. No quit in that team at all. Hard for me to see how that team lost 3 games earlier in the year. Very hard playing, disciplined, well-coached young men on that team. Congrats again for an outstanding season!!!!
Now some game analysis. This is off the top of my head....haven't seen any stats yet.
First half Abilene dominated the game on both sides of the ball. The entire first half Abilene moved the ball at will against the Klein defense. The majority of the damage was on the ground with a few WR screens thrown in to keep the Klein D honest. Abilene's kicker missed XP after second TD and Warren tried to make it up on 2pt conversion next TD and ball fell incomplete at the feet of an open rcvr who probably would have scored the 2pts. Also interesting decision by Warren to kick the FG at the end of the first half after the blocked punt. I belive it was H Simms who got the ball to the 1 ft line but clock was runniing at 22 secs left and AHS had no TOs. Warren had obviously already decided that if we didn't score on that play to kick the FG because the FG team ran out immediately. Score was 22-7 at half and Abilene had dominated the game. Offense had not been stopped and the defense had shut the Wing T down after the first Klein possession.
Second half. Abilene forces 3 & out on Klein's first posession. AHS Tony Curtis breaks off 65 yd TD run. Simms injured on the play....not sure what happened but I think he just got his bell rung. I'll elaborate on that in another post. Abilene appeared to be about to put the game away on 4 and 2 from inside the Bearkat 10 yd line when #18 makes a spectacular one handed INT at the one yd line to kill the AHS drive. That play seemed to shift old MO to the Klein side and they began to play inspired ball. Both teams slugged it out in the fourth qtr. The Klein D made some great adj and stopped the Abilene offense. The Abilene D made some big plays of its own but Klein would not quit. The Bearkats willed the ball down the field converting a few 4 th and longs and got within 8 pts on a leaping TD by Barnes from inside the Abilene 5 yd line.
And then....one of the best finishes to a football game I have ever witnessed. AHS recovers the onside kick. One AHS first down and the game is over. The Klein D stuffs two running plays to bring up 3rd and long. R Sims throws a pass to H Sims who is brought down a couple of yards short to give Klein life. AHS punts and pins Klein deep inside their own 10 yd line with 9 sec left in the game. AHS goes into prevent with only 2 or 3 rushers and 4 men deep. Barnes out jumps 3 AHS defenders for the ball at midfield....2 sec left. AHS goes into same prevent D. Klein QB launches ball deep to the far sideline. Klein recever makes catch around the AHS 5 yd line surrounded by 3 AHS defenders and breaks inside to the endzone. One defender grabs hold of his jersey and holds on for dear life as the Klein rcvr lunges for the goaline. Th other 2 AHS defenders catch the duo struggling at the 2 yd line. The Klein player reaches the ball out with one hand in a desperate lunge as the 3 Eagle defenders bring him down.....a half yard short of the goaline....Game over AHS holds on for the win!!!!!! WOW what game!!!! My bloods pumping just writing this down!!!!
Congrats again to the Bearkats and the Eagles......no losers on this day...just one team that advances and one that fell just short.

Have to disagree with the posts that Abilene went conservative on O. They kept calling the same plays that had been working all day but Klein made some great plays in the fourth qtr on D.
Also disagree with the comments on the Abilene defense. They did not go into a prevent until the final 9 secs when Klein completed those two final passes which was the correct call.....you dont expect that they will complete those two passes. Abilene defense played the same way they did against Bowie last week...they rushed 3 or 4 and played coverage. Klein just made some great plays.
Give the kids on both sides the credit they deserve....every player on both sides of that battle left EVERTHING they had on the field. Two great teams that were determined to win. Abilene was one play better today. Klein is by far the best team we played all year and I saw all the games in person except for Tyler Lee.

Just wanted to also say that i was impressed with Dakota Barnes. While the Abilene D shut the Klein Wing T down that kid never quit. He made some great pass receptions. He came thru with the TD that got Klein close and made a great play to outjump 3 AHS defenders for the ball to set up that last play.
Also impressed with Kissiberth....kid made some great plays on both sides of the ball.
And finally i have to say I was impressed with the passing of the Klein QB. Abilene totally shut the Wing T ground game down and that kid made some great throws to bring his team back. I was very surprised.

Also disagree with the comments on the Abilene defense. They did not go into a prevent until the final 9 secs when .
With all due respect, that is just not true. There were multiple people around me that noticed it, and I specifcially paid attention it on the drive they scored to get to 21... well before 9 secs. Opinions are one thing, fact is fact. They were rushing two most of the time, three every once in a while and pulling everyone else back into coverage. That was NOT how the defense was playing for the first 3 quarters. As far as slaps in the face, it is NO slap in the face to lose to a good team. If we had lost, it would be no insult to us either, but to ANYONE who was at that game, Im sorry that score was closer then it should have been, closer then the game actually was. Thats just a fact. Again not interested in rehashing the past, Klein is a great football team and had the most heart of any team we've faced in the playoffs. But Im not going to sit here and say this was a one yard, run outta time loss. Klein was dominated for most of this game in every aspect. When they started coming back was after multiple trick plays, 4th down conversions and when we (except for one late drive) pulled Sims and started playing prevent.

And now let me give respect to those Abilene Eagles. This team just showed a ton of heart and dug deep to find a way to win today against a great Klein team. Much respect for every Eagle team member for taking us all to the big dance.
Some individual kudos to Herschel, Tony and Ronnell for doing what they have done all year in a huge pressure packed game. Herschel and Tony both rushed for over 100 yds......kudos to the O line for paving the way. Ronnell had some big runs of his own as well.
The defense shut down a very potent ground game and made some big plays throughout the game. And eventhough they gave up some big passing plays they made the plays that counted when the game was on the line.
Congrats Eagles!!!!!!

People can say what they want about the prevent defense. I have watched Abilene High and have seen where the 2 man rush 9 in coverage defense as part of their package. Klein was not a throwing team going in and Im sure that abilene high didn't game plan to use the "prevent" look except for the situation like they were in today. The defense is either a goat if you do it or a goat if you don't. If you keep with the defense you ran all day to shut down the run then you are in one on one coverage in pass and giving up big plays. Using the prevent look atleast made the passing game run time off the clock. Bottom-line in this stage of the season a win is a win anyway you can get it. The eagles are state bound and that is all that matters.

I gotta disagree again on the statements about the D.
They didn't drop into a true prevent defense until the final two passing plays with 8 or 9 back in coverage and 2 or 3 rushing. They played the first 3 qtrs differently than the 4th because up until the 4th Klein was mainly running the ball. Once they started throwing the ball the Abilene D played the same style they did last week against Bowie.....rush a few and drop back into coverage. Last week everyone says the defense played great and shut down a potent passing attack but this week its...oh they played prevent and what were the coaches thinking. Gimme a break.
yoy are correct that Abilene dominated the game for 3 1/2 qtrs. And yeah Klein threw every trick play they had in the playbook at us...but hey...their season was on the line and they did what they had to to get back in the game. They outplayed us in the fourth qtr...simple as that. We made the play that counted in the end and won a great game. That's what champions do...find a way to win.

I'm sorry but i was having conversations with people around me about the 2 to 3 rush at 3-4 mins in the game. Again i understand the mindset; we've got them out of their game, and we forced them to try and beat us in the air. I just dont agree that you change it up at that point. You're totally right, champions find a way to win, but since there is a disagreement about whether or not we let up, I'll just quote a couple players who were on the field, and seem to have felt what I clearly saw:
Herschel Sims:
“It feels real good,” Herschel Sims said of reaching the finals. “We played our butts off today. It wasn’t our best game, but we found a way to get the job done.”
Tony Curtis:
"They were kind of in a bind, and they started executing and playing harder,” Curtis said of the Bearkats defense. “We just needed to get it together. We were kind of slacking, but we came out with the win and that’s the main thing.”

I'm sorry, but rushing 2 is not the way to go in my book. If you give a QB all day to find a open receiver, he will. The pass defense needs to go. Rush as many as you can and put as much pressure on the QB as possible. Flush him out of the pocket and make him hurry hid throws. This pass defense IMHO could have cost us the game.
Okay! And if you rush everyone and then have a one on one with a reciever and he makes the catch for a score, then your getting on here and saying I can't believe they didn't back off in coverage. Like I said the defense rushing 2 dropping 9 is a hit or miss deal. Today it was a hit. Im sure the coaches know what they are doing. It is only Bozo's like us that get on here a question.

Exactly.....they played the same way today with 3-4 min left.....when Klien started throwing the ball.....that they did the entire game against Bowie....rush a few and drop alot into coverage. And as far as the letting up....I just don't see this team, that has been so focused all year letting up at the most critical point in the season. I have read those quotes and I have to say that alot of the reason for how that game ended and what those young men said has to do with the play of Klein at the end of the game.

Again......last week against a prolific passing attack that featured a QB who had thrown over 30 TDs and had three superior rcvrs the Abilene D played just like they did today ....rushed only a few and dropped back alot into coverage. Bowie's QB had all day to throw but couldn't find any open rcvrs and the few rushers finally got to him. Everyone exclaimed how great the D was against the pass. Today the D plays the exact same scheme against the pass.....until the final 2 plays......but Klein is successful and you guys are crying about how the D almost lost the game and how they should blitz and such. You dont change what got you this far at this time of the year. You guys are killing me.

Like I said the defense rushing 2 dropping 9 is a hit or miss deal. Today it was a hit. Im sure the coaches know what they are doing. It is only Bozo's like us that get on here a question.
How do you call that a hit? Klein nearly got it in for a TD. Granted there is still a lot of what if's, like if they get the 2 point cinversion, but i'm saying that we still need to rush more than 2!
[QUOTE=warbird00;1424772]I'm sorry but i was having conversations with people around me about the 2 to 3 rush at 3-4 mins in the game.
Amen brother, Im with ya! However some of the dorks (me included) get on here and post and have know clue what they are talking about. it is just a bunch of arm chair QBing. Eagles won and are headed to state. In these rounds a win is a win.
I think the Eagle coaching staff especially on the Defensive side have done a great job with very little talent on that side of the ball all year. and have molded a group of young men into one of the finest defenses in the state. So we need to stop bashing and appreciating what we have.

I knew the yardage might be close (especially with Klein's 90 in the last drive) but had no idea it would be that close...When was the last game that Klein has had that many yards passing? Any this year?
when we played Westfield i believe

LOL!!! Agree with you on the armchair QBing....we are all guilty of it....myself included and I sure ain't no coach. I'm just a guy who played some ball in my younger days and still loves the game....and has thoroughly enjoyed following this fine group of young men who are accomplishing the dream that so many of us once had but fell woefully short of.
I also agree that the defensive coaches and players have done a wonderful job in turning this defense, that so many of us....myself included, thought was a weak link early in the season into one of the best in the state. Kudos boys!!! keep doing what you do...it has got you to the championship game!!!

Having AHS play prevent defense the rest of the way helped matters, Klein coach Stan Labay said.
“Abilene didn’t want us making a lot of big plays and they really backed off,” he said. “They started loosening up a lot and didn’t put pressure on us as much as they had. They didn’t play as aggressively. They were just trying to prevent the big play, which I certainly understand. They were going to wait for us to make a mistake, go for the picks and fumbles and whatever they could create.”

Dunno if he means in just the last few secs or not but the way I read it, it seemed like the Def was playing "prevent" Defense for a while....
Not that I care either way just throwing out more info for ppl to discuss and so that I may read :)

I guess perhaps we should get on the same page for what happened first. When you said "they werent playing prevent until the last 9 seconds." I dont understand how you can say that. Whether it was a right or wrong decision is a different matter. One is an opinion, but the fact is they were playing prevent WELL before 9 seconds left. As far as the quotes, yes Kleins play contributed to it...duh. If they didnt have any play we could drop 0 into coverage it wouldnt have mattered. The point is this wasnt a halftime adjustment...there was one major adjustment made, it was in the 4th quarter and it was BY US, on defense, shortly after a player in a key position needed help getting up. THEN Klein started moving the ball all over the place. Thats fact. We changed what WE were doing...they took advantage of it. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I wouldnt have made the same decision to play prevent. But after having them score twice in just a few mins, and almost score a third time...well hindsight is 20/20 and it seems to pretty clear to me giving them more time to run around and get open was worse then sendin in four or five guys every snap and relyin on your CB and safeties to do their job. No dis the decision from me IN ANYWAY....again I understand exactly what they were thinking and trying to do. Just making an observation of what I saw.

hmmm. Other Abilene fans saw it. Our players said it. Klein's coach saw it, took advantage of it, and is quoted above agreeing with my assesment that we backed off. In the same article coach Warren ADMITS he was playing prevent. Since they apparently agree with me, Im eagar to know who exactly your referring to as clueless? lol. I win.

Pretty much everything has already been said on here about this game but I feel like i need my share of crow :p
Abilene is all they have been advertised to be and completely dominated the first 3 and a half quarters. Sims is the real deal :notworthy
But I can't say enough about my Klein Bearkats. They fought until the absolute LAST SECOND and never gave up. It was a great season for a great group of kids that definitely deserved it. State semi-finalists is nothing to frown upon!
Congrats on a great season, Bearkats!

Look on the play of the defense I am not arguing the point that they changed from aggressive play. They had to change from defending the run to the pass. The point I am making is that once Klein had to throw the ball the Eagle D played the pass like they have pretty much all year. Very rarely have they blitzed against the pass. All year they have rushed only 3 or 4 and dropped the rest into pass coverage. That ia a fact. Call it want you want. I call it a base defense. To me a true prevent is what they played on the final 2 plays or at the end of the first half against PESH last year in Plano. And yes in both o those instances the results were less than stellar. Lack of a pass rush has been a problem all year itdidnt just happen yesterday all of a sudden. Klein is just the first team to really exploit the style of pass defense Abilene has played all year.

Makes you wonder. What if we had passed a bit more this year? Besides the two INT's, West was fantastic yesterday! He has an absolute rocket for an arm and really came in the clutch on those drives in the fourth quarter with all of those 4th-and-long conversions!

I was impressed with the passing game Klein showed. QB definitely is a good passer.
That second guessing comes with the territory when you run the Wing T. Ask our district buddies over at Burleson. One of their former QBs led McMurry Univ and Coach Hal Mumme's "Air Raid" offense this season. Kid threw the ball allover the place. If you didn't know Mumme is one of the architects of the pass crazy offense run by Mike Leach at Texs Tech.

It really does go to show how important offensive and defensive schemes are.

Very true.
(Oh, and I disagree with the 36-7.;))
It may not have ended up 36-7, but AHS had first and goal on the 8, up 29-7. Eagles usually get a TD out of those situations. Congrats to Rowe for a heck of a play to keep it from happening.

Rowe had 3 interceptions in the last two games...and he is going to be around next year! ;)
