University of Texas System regents on Thursday are expected to approve spending nearly $150 million to remodel and expand Royal-Memorial Stadium.

The project, scheduled to be completed in August 2008, would boost seating capacity for football games to more than 90,000.

They are also expected to build a $120 million hotel and conference center on campus.

http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/02/8utbuild.html

No word on if aggy will try and expand DKR East to keep up.

I noticed that Tech is adding another 10,000 seats to Jones as well as finally getting rid of that god-awful turf in favor of the new synthetic grass surface. Should be very nice.

BTW, this what DKR West is expected to look like one both endzones are rebuilt...

Sweet. Now you can get college nose bleed seats. JK but 90k is a lot.

I don't know much about College stadiums, but 90k is bigger than NFL stadiums. Is this because the NFL can make the tickets cost more because seating is limited?

It's because of demand... pure and simple. You have college stadiums out there that seat 105,000+ at an average of probably well over $50 per ticket. The NFL could never dream of drawing such a crowd at the prices most of the big college programs charge. The only exception I can really think of is the Washington Redskins who can seat around 90,000 at their stadium.

In my experience, it was far easier and cheaper to go see the Cowboys during the mid-90s that it is to go see the Longhorns now and that's not even counting the Red River Rivalry where you can easily drop $250 or more on one of the worst seats in the house. Again, that's my experience.

Oh, I had it backwards. I guess a lot of people don't go to NFL because of the same reasons we like College better on here.

I went to two UT games last year mid-level seats $55.00, I also went to two TXState games close to the front row $12.00.

aggy can't even sell out their current stadium consistently.

The hotel is going in on the southern edge of campus. Do you know where Player's is? It's a burger joint at the corner of MLK and Guadalupe (The Drag). They were going to tear it down for a parking garage next to the proposed hotel. Player's fought and won. Now the hotel has to build a 3 story garage beneath itself. But if you know where that corner is, you know where the hotel is going.

Don't forget Texas is also rennovating Disch-Falk, building an outdoor swimming center and a tennis complex. There's always room. :D

I just hope they start to do away with the surface parking and build garages.

Keep up with the Jones'? We ARE the Jones'.

And it makes sense. Kyle Field is known as a tacklebox.

To quote wide, "tight-ness." Thanks for posting those, they are awesome. I can't wait to see it myself. What is really cool is that the endzone seating will finally be moved close to the field. Combine that with the new double deck structure that wraps around and it should get VERY noisy down there since the sound has nowhere to go anymore.

Maybe it's just me, but I think when they finish up with DKR West, it is going to look like a much more attractive version of Tennessee's Neyland Stadium...

Kyle Field official capacity: 82,600

2005 home games

SMU - 75,128
TSU - 72,741
BU - 79,280
OSU - 78,451
ISU - 86,172
UT - 86,617

Season Capacity Total = 495,600
Season Actual Attendance = 478,389
Season % Capacity = 96.5%

That's 2 sellouts and 4 non-sellouts. The last one aided by Longhorn fans that bought up a bunch of tickets. My dad and I sat in the aggy student section along with a thousand other Longhorn fans.

I hate to be picky, but the TSU game needs an asterisk next to it. Because of the hurricane, actual attendance was around 50,000. That certainly can't be held against aggy though.

bowiedawgs01
02-10-2006, 01:54 PM
No asterisk needed. I'm using tickets sold, not turnstile. These attendance numbers are what were reported in the box score by A&M. They include season ticket holders that didn't necessarily show up.

lol No it's not. You said to give them an asterisk b/c only 50,000 showed up. I gave them credit for what they reported in every game, not what showed up at any particular game. And they STILL can't fill it to capacity consistently.

96% is pretty horrible if you compare it to Texas who averages over 100% capacity. Comparing your attendance to SMU is sad. Even aggy hasn't fallen that far.

jtk1519
02-11-2006, 02:25 AM

Actually, I was saying to put an asterisk next to it because of the hurricane. The attendance that night, be it counted by butts in the seats or tickets sold, is going to be seriously skewed because of the hurricane thus making that game a poor one to use for the basis of comparing attendance figures. A lot of last minute tickets that might have been sold weren’t because of the hurricane and a lot of people that might have purchased tickets for the game didn't show up because of the hurricane. Either way, no matter how you count the attendance, the TSU game should not be used because extreme circumstances forced the numbers deviate from their norm and from what they might have been.

In other words, aggy should not have that attendance number held against them because of the very unique circumstances surrounding that game. Now, putting the boards on the wrong side of the freakin' glass... well, aggy deserves some mocking for that. ;)

This was also a losing year for us...I'm no expert by any means on t.u., so I don't know f they have ever had a losing season (sarcasm), but do a similar statistic on them in a losing season. You may still be above 96% but I would be surprised. I will say that the timing for a stadium expansion may not be great, but you gotta take all things into account.

bowiedawgs01
02-16-2006, 02:07 AM
Texas expanded when demand was strong for years in a row. A&M's demand has been waning for a few seasons in a row. The fact that it was a losing season has something to do with it. But comparing it to a Texas losing season doesn't matter since we expanded with demand. Go back the last 4 seasons and compare A&M's attendance to Texas'.
