And to think, the two years you guys were in region 2 you couldnt get out of the Williamson county 1st round ;). I'd like see what 16-5a would do against San Antonio, and the Valley, as opposed to Dallas, Houston and East Texas teams.
I kid I kid. That is a very impressive and almost unbelievable feat, especially the way you guys always do it even in what yall would consider a "down year". That 1st comment i left is just the envy coming out .:notworthy

Well this year 25-5A put it to 16-5A. We'll see if both we and Stony Point make it to the finals who wins (for the rest of the state--we've never played each other). Pflugerville made the switch from Region II to IV last year with some success--but not a walk in the park. And I think not too different from how they did in Region II playoffs their last couple of years there.
I think the big difference is that the types of teams we see in San Antonio, the Valley, and even Houston are somewhat different that what we see out of Regions I and II. San Antonio usually has run-oriented teams. Houston area--we've seen some passing teams. Fortunately, 25-5A prepares us for both.
Hope you're at the Dome if SP and we make it there--even though I'm sure you'll be rooting for SP! Better yet, why don't you come over to Memorial Stadium next Saturday and actually root FOR us?

Great argument, but no Rangers playoff appearance in the last year of the decade, really hurts their case.

Exactly what is the purpose of this recognition? Who cares if a team has had a successful run at winning a Region Championship? The ultimate goal of playing in high school playoffs is winning the State Championship. All these 'District Champs', 'Bi-District Champs', 'Region Champs' monickers schools throw on their web sites, T-Shirts, and other athletic memorabilia provide a nice moral booster for the kids that attend the school, but unless you win the 'Big Kahuna', they're nothing but false platitudes. Yea, they can be perceived as evidensce of a successful football program for a school, but unless that program can back it up with one or more State Championships, who really cares?

Well then every year there are ONLY two successful 5a programs? That doesn't seem accurate to me at all. In my opinion the best barometer for a program's success is its consistency in making playoff runs.
Based on that, it would seem that Westlake is the number 1 team over the last 10 years, with 3 (possibly 4) state finals appearances and having never missed the playoffs.

seeing as i used to go to westlake, i see this as an interesting conversation.
let's put westlake in 16 next season.
their "give me" win will be vista ridge, but let's evaluate who else westlake would beat.
vs leander... in all honesty i think this would be a good match up (at least for the coaches).
vs cedar park... depends on if coach ross would feel like running something besides a conservative offense. it's tied 1-1 in the past two years (but it has been all cedar park statistically speaking).
vs stony point... (hopefully we will find out in two weeks :ninja:) i think stony point would have this one, through and through.
vs georgetown... next year would be interesting, seeing as georgetown will be mostly upperclassmen and well used to "having nothing to lose" from this season. i think georgetown could definitely make a case for itself, but i feel like westlake would win.
vs round rock... if round rock had a grown secondary in their defense, and the same ground game offense from this season, then they could win... but if their secondary is weak, then westlake would have this one by half time.
vs westwood... westlake would probably burn the warrior defense, so westlake.
vs mcneil... a new head coach who knows what he is doing mixed with mcneil's usual "A List" roster could definitely do some damage. but if their new head coach is the same, then not so much. toss up.

Again, I consider a team successful if they continually win The Big Event, not the one's leading up to it. I remember before the Spurs won their first NBA Championship, they hung up all these "West Division Champions" banners in the Arena and Alamodome. Most of the fans just laughed about it because they figured the Spurs had to hang something up in the rafters so when Boston, Chicago, and LA came to town, they could have something to look at.
Never missed playoffs? 25-5 has 8 teams in their district. You have a 50-50 chance at not making the playoffs in any given season. Looking at their records this season, Akins and Anderson look like they belong in 4A instead of 5A (since they started their seasons playing mostly 4A schools). Austin Westlake would have to miss their first 5 games of the season to ever miss the playoffs. :D

Oh, please! And Round Rock has beaten Westlake when? Not in the last thirteen years--and I suspect never is a good possibility. I'm glad you're proud of 16-5A, but you need to update your familiarity with 25-5A. And for the other post about Akins being 4A, Akins is actually one of the largest schools in our district. Success on the football field, however, has been difficult for them. Anderson is very competitive and beat Austin High. They may drop down based on numbers, but if your 16-5A teams think that 25-5A is the pushover it was just a few years ago, they haven't been paying attention.

You beat us in bi-district two years straight. You always have a very talented team and are bigger than we are. The previous time we were in Region II, I remember going to Waco to play (and lose to) the eventual state champ Garland in what must have been at least the second round of the playoffs. So while we do okay against Region II playoff teams in non-district, we haven't been nearly as successful in playoff games there as in Region IV.

Since 2000:
Westlake
104*-20* 84% win percentage
22*-9* 71% in the playoffs
*-Westlake is still active in the playoffs
Westlake has made the playoffs every year this decade, have been regional champions 5 times, been to state 3 times but haven't won.
2-0 vs Converse Judson
1-2 vs Smithson Valley
Converse Judson
94-32 75%
19-7 74% in the playoffs
Have been to the playoffs 8/10 years, have been regional champs 4 times, have been to state 3 times and beat midland in 2002.
0-2 vs Westlake
1-6 vs SV
Smithson Valley
115*-22* 84%, .005% greater than Westlake or
90-19 83% since joining 5A in '02
28*-9* 76% or
22-7 76% since joining 5A in '02
*- SV was 4A in 2000-2001
Have been to the playoffs 9/10 years, have been regional champs 5*(4 in 5A) times, and have been to state 3*(2 in 5A) times and have never won.
2-1 vs Westlake
6-1 vs Converse Judson
Unless Westlake goes to state, I give the nod to SV.

You seem to be going through a WHOLE lot of effort to make your case about having some moniker and useless platitude awarded to Austin Westlake. You trying to create some moneymaking scheme where you can make up some kind of new bumper sticker or window sticker that says "Austin Westlake Chapparels - Region 4 Team Of The Decade"? If so, knock yourself out. I'm not doubting the stats. I'm just asking, what is the point of the entire argument of who is the Region 4 Team of the Decade? Why stop there? Whose the Team Of The Decade for every district in the state? Whose the Team Of The Decade in every city and small town in the State of Texas? Austin Westlake won Region 4 again this year, we get it. I'll be more impressed if you can say Austin Westlake - State Champions - 2009. Now there's a mature comeback. Living through your local teams success because the school you went to completely sucked when it came to football? Or better yet, a little disturbed that Katy can truly claim themselves as the 5A Division 2 Team Of The Decade? At least you got the 'boy' part right. No one paid for it--except those who bought the magazine--it was the big cover story. I think it used winning percentages and several other statistics to reach that conclusion. And I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't win a higher percentage of our games than Judson, because we had a 70+ game streak of district wins without a loss that stretched past 2000.
I think we agree to disagree, but know that Judson was NOT featured on the cover of a statewide magazine as the Texas team of the 90's (not just Region IV).

There are alot of really good football programs in the state of Texas. The bragging stuff just goes to diminish that school, at least in my mind. We have a big game this weekend against a really good opponent. Let's be measured by our performance on the field! GoChaps!

Close but not quite... Westlake was #2 with 126 wins from 1990-1999
LaMarque had 127 wins
(which should put the 128 wins by SLC, 131 current wins by Katy and 132 wins by Celina from 2000-2009 into perspective)
Granted LaMarque competed 6 out of 10 years in the '90's with only one single division in the 4A playoffs...
