The purpose of this thread is to serve as a portal for information on the 5A State Semi-Finals (Division 1 and Division 2). This will include game information, radio information (broadcast and internet), television information (if any), webcast information, and articles links to articles on the teams and players.

If you have any information that you think can contribute to this thread, please post it as reply below and I'll edit it into the original post as soon as I can. I'll most likely be updating this with additional information at least once a day in the evenings.

Well since it is in Waco...can they make it a doubleheader.

Abilene vs. Klein
Euless Trinity vs. Round Rock Stony Point

Sounds like a plan. If they have to play at different venues, I just hope they don't have the games at the same time.

Yeah, poor planning revenue wise. Had the games been scheduled apart, would bet crowds would have attended both.

I don't see how them saying on their broadcast that Stony Point vs. Trinity would be broadcast on Legacy Sports Network isn't a confirmed reliable source. You can listen to the archive of the game and verify it if you don't believe me. It'll be posted on their site and the K-MAC Sports web site on Wednesday.

Millennium Sports has broadcast all of the Trinity playoff games this season, but they have rotated between using the Millennium Sports link on Audio Online and KHVN AM 970. This site does update weekly though to show exactly which it will be on, usually on Thursday: http://www.hsgametime.com/dfw/sharedcontent/dws/spt/highschools/football/radio.html#

New Braunfels said all playoff games would be broadcast live on KGNB 1420 AM, but if you want printed sources, then you can check out the sister web site, though they don't update it until the day of the game, at http://knbt.fm/site/feed-item/44. You'll notice all of the New Braunfels playoff games have been on KGNB this season by looking through those archives.

Last week I listened to a game through a radio station that continued to say "Millenium Sports Network" throughout the game. However there never was a link to the game I could find on their website to point a link to.

If I'm going to stick my name on something, then I'm going to see it in print that it is going to happen. The links are there for anyone to follow to the main sites. If I am able to see it in print, I'll remove the "unverified."

Nothing against you or anyone that provides information, but I'm a "trust but verify" kind of guy. :D

I'll check out the links and see if I can verify the schedule.

I'll also be able to add more radio station links Friday or Saturday AM once the newspapers publish their radio/ TV schedules.

I fully understand that. What I was saying is Millennium Sports will broadcast the game, but we don't know if it will only be online or on a specific site yet, which is one of the reasons I provided the link showing the Metroplex games that is usually updated on Thursday.

The others though were said during their broadcasts that they would air on those stations. We just have to wait until mid week when they usually update their web sites to have the source outside of the broadcast.

Now I'm :( .

The STP/Trinity game is at 2pm at Waco ISD stadium. I'll be missing the Abilene game.

Oh, well.

Three games are at two and one game is at noon. My phone will be busy looking at the updates on the games.

:D

It would be a win for everyone if these games were staggered at different times, no? Presumably more revenue due to bigger crowds along with more media coverage. Maybe have one on Friday night and three on Saturday spread out throughout the day depending on stadium availability.

Here is some information which confirms Trinity vs. Stony Point will be broadcast on KHVNam.com and KHVN AM 970.

That's not all. TSRN will also be broadcasting the Trinity/ Stony Point game, meaning TSRN will broadcast all of the Final Four games.

The amount of historical/current ties in the Cinco Ranch v Westlake game (through Katy) is pretty crazy...

Westlake provides Cougars a mirror image in execution

If there any more interconnecting story lines for this week’s Cinco Ranch vs. Austin Westlake state semifinal game in Austin, it could be an episode of “Lost.”

For starters, there’s Cougar head coach Don Clayton, who will lead his charges into their first 5A semifinal 15 years and one week after he did the same as offensive coordinator for the Katy Tigers in 1994.

Did we mention it’s at the exact same stadium – UT’s DKR Memorial – and that no KISD team has played there since the Tigers whipped Converse Judson’s butt way back in 1994? How about that Clayton’s Cougars have beaten two of the same post-season opponents – Lamar and Beaumont West Brook – that his Tigers did 15 years ago on their way to the state title game.

“I told a few of our guys a couple of days ago, I feel like I’ve seen this script before,” Clayton said Monday in his office.

“In a lot of ways, I think that win over Judson was the biggest Katy ever had. They were the two-time defending state champions and we just went in there and whipped them.”

A buff when it comes to high school football history, Clayton has no problem connecting the dots of the similarities between Katy-Judson ‘94 and Cinco Ranch-Westlake ‘09.

Having held their own with Katy the past two years and losing to eventual state runner-up Hightower in the 2008 post-season, the Cougars are on the cusp of moving into the state’s elite.

Of course standing between them and that goal is Westlake, a squad which has played for six state titles, won one and whose most-famous alumnus – Drew Brees – is currently making a mockery of the NFL’s MVP race.

Looking at the Chaparrals is a lot like looking in the mirror for the Cougars, or at the red-and-white reflection located a bit northwest of campus.

“They’re a lot like us, and a lot like Katy,” Clayton said. “They’re going to rely on their execution instead of size or strength. They’ll wait for you to make mistakes and then capitalize on them.”

They didn’t have to wait long for mistakes last Saturday in their 37-20 win over San Antonio Clark.

After swaggering into the game at 13-0, Clark turned the ball over six times, two of which were returned for touchdowns as Westlake exploded to a 30-0 halftime lead.

The Westlake offensive attack centers around senior quarterback Tanner Price, a two-year starter who’s a load to bring down at 6-2, 210, and has thrown for 2,206 yards, rushed for another 980 and accounted for 18 Chap touchdowns.

“He’s already committed to Wake Forest,” Clayton said of the signal-caller. “They’ve been riding his ability all season and he can do both things very well.”

Price only completed 7-of-17 passes for 66 yards against Clark, but ran for 96 more. When he’s not carrying the ball, the Chaps will give it to junior tailback Van Gramman, who has gained 904 yards on 202 carries this year.

Two main targets have emerged when Price goes vertical – Collin Shaw (32-692-5) and Miles Berger (32-736-0).

Much like Cinco Ranch, Westlake presents multiple defensive fronts for different situations. Clayton likens the Chaparrals to West Brook in their ability to use speed to run to the ball.

As interesting as Clayton’s relationship with the stadium is the make-up of Westlake’s coaching staff. Head Darren Allman is in his first year since coming to the state’s capitol from the land of “Friday Night Lights.” Allman was previously head man at Odessa Permian for four seasons.

Two of Allman’s assistants are as familiar to the Katy area as Clayton himself. The Chaps’ offensive coordinator is Jeff Rhoads, a Katy High School graduate who Clayton coached during his own stint with the Tigers.

Rhoads is the son of KISD’s first-ever athletic coordinator, the late Jack Rhoads. In addition, the Chaps’ defensive backs coach is Jeff Joseph, current Tiger head coach Gary’s son, a 2001 Katy High School graduate.

“Jeff (Rhoads) was the first quarterback I had at Katy. I’ve known him for about 25 years now,” Clayton said.

“Jeff Joseph ... I remember him when he was a very young boy running all over the Katy High School field house.”

While it’s great to see old friends, Clayton and the Katy alumni will be fierce rivals come Saturday when the Chaps try to figure out how to slow down the Cougar rushing attack that has chewed up 641 yards of turf in its last two games.

At the center of that attack is Cinco Ranch junior K.C. Nlemchi, who with 145 yards against Brazoswood, now has only three names and 258 yards between him and the greatest rushing season in KISD history.

If the Cougars can win Saturday and advance to the state title game, Nlemchi will have a legitimate shot of dethroning all-time KISD rushing champ Bill Jatzlau, who set the bar with 2,565 yards in ... you guessed it, 1994.

As good as Nlemchi has been, quarterback Zach Myers might be the real pivot man for the Cougar offense on Saturday. Myers ran well against Brazoswood, gaining 66 yards on just 10 carries, and passing for another 75 as well as a touchdown.

And if all those connections weren’t enough, there’s the volleyball factor. After years of near misses, the Cinco Ranch volleyball squad broke through for its first Region III title last month, only to have it state dream cut short by Austin Westlake.

Although it won’t be the same as playing for a title themselves, you can bet that Cougar spikers (as seen on Page 1B) have more than a little bit of interest in Saturday’s game.

Truthfully the nickname applies only to football and actually goes back to when it was part of the little SWC. The nickname came because the Eagles would have to go to war every week to get one of only two playoff spots at that time.
