Will Permian ever be a power again? How are things looking under there new coach? Are they close or far away from at least making the playoffs?
Would like to see them good again and competing in the state playoffs.

Successful runs in Texas High School football largely depend on coaching...the schools that have had long term success have had consistently good coaching throughout...Permian would love nothing more than to re-kindle the success they once enjoyed, and with the right coach, maybe they can pull it off....Some of the schools in Texas that are todays Permian, are Smithson Valley, Katy, Lufkin, Celina and others, although most have'nt won the titles that Permian has...

Permian dropped football a couple of years ago. At least that is what some of the Odessa High fans would lead you to believe when they talk about their "streak".

Yeah I know who is good today in Texas football, I was just curious if Permian was close to rekindling their past or was far away. It seemed like they were pretty consistent for a good number of years. I agree coaching is a huge reason, talent helps as well. Is the area still producing good athletes like Roy Williams and Stoney Case?

They have a very good coach. I don't know where there talent level is. There probably aren't any Roy Williams or Stoney Case caliber athletes, but they have playmakers.
Winning is all about attitude. If Alman can restore that old attitude, anything is possible. I would be surprised if Permian is a playoff team. Not only will there be an extra team in the playoffs  , but I expect Lee and AHS to be down form where they have been.

The coaches on the Permian campus right now have impressive credentials via places like Burnet (Stephen McGee-Jordan Shipley years) and Brownwood.
From what I understand, the staff has brought back a hardworking and detail oriented approach that hasn't been there in a while.
Permian should be in the hunt for a playoff spot this year since 4 of the 6 teams in the district can go now.
Given the Permian staff's credentials and the values they are instilling back into the program, I'm really keeping an eye on how they develop.

I don't know where that came from, but it doesn't surprise me because i've always thought you were a closet Permian fan.

Hmmm, jtk a "closet Permian fan." Well, I've only met the man once, but I kind of suspected it for a long time.

They've got good coaches and have Coach Gaines back as AD of Ector County ISD. I heard that the current 8th grade class at Permian is a good one.
Let's see...is there any market elasticity between oil and talent, if so???:)

Are you sure you don't mean that OHS has the good 8th grade class. One of the OHS feeder schools (Bowie) were city champs and another one (Ector) finished second.

I don't think Permian is going to take a 50-yr. hiatus fm. the limelight like has happened to alot of schls. that were once fb powers, but I think its return to being competitive again will be a gradual process lasting another 5 yrs. or so. I think Per. has a good coach & good assistants & can cycle back to prominence again.
Right now, the big city schls. are pretty much dominating the playoffs, so it remains to be seen if any of the West Texas schls. can be competitive again consistently. I don't think a town like Odessa will remain content to field mediocre fb teams forever.

Nothing like the excitement of a great 8th grade class. :p Gonna need an infusion of more talent for Permian to compete again.

I don't think Per.'s past success was primarily due to talent.
