We have a new tunnal that says "Cowboy Fight Never Dies" on the side, and shoots out smoke as the players run out...*thinks* isnt that exacatly like Southlakes that says "Protect the Tradtion"
I just found it funny...

ours doesn't say that, but there has been a sign that the srs carry out with those sentiments on occasion. the tunnels are getting fairly passe, but they give the dads a chance to hug their kids just before they take the field, and it is great from that aspect, imo.

A lot of people have that..
Longview has one but it just says Lobos on the side..Lufkin has one pretty sure it just says Lufkin on it..
John Tyler even has one.

Almost every team has some sort of slogan. "Cowboy Fight Never Dies" sounds nothing like Southlakes.

Tunnel and Helmets are common around 4A and 5A today. Lufkin bought their tunnel/helmet combo in 2001 and the fog machine before that in 1995.
I don't know who the first school in Texas was to originate the inflateable helmet run through, but it has spread like wildfire among schools. You have heard of keeping up with the Jones haven't you and the combos are not cheap. Lufkin's booster club spent $10,000 on the original in 2001 and have added upgrades since to the tune of $4000.00, plus you need to send them back to the manufacturer ocassionally for refurbishing or repair, that is another cost.
The big thing now with school districts is getting their stadiums outfitted with artificial grass installed, new scoreboards with video replay screens and new indoor practice facilities. Lufkin is spending $2.8M to build and install all the above and more this summer, thanks mostly to sponsor/ partnership contributions and other revenues. Key word here is the taxpayer in Lufkin should be happy about how this was done, no tax increase or bond proposal were needed to accomplish these improvements.
Got to keep up with the Jones.

SLC tunnels just says "Carroll Dragons". I think the most impressive one I've seen is Haltom's giant football player. Doesn't Dennison have a impressive tunnel situation too? Now here is a question... how does everyone feel about rolling out huge speakers to blast music out as the team walks out of the locker room. Kind of remember Dennison, Sherman and I think, not sure because of old age, Arlington.

Jesuit does not have an inflatable tunnel or smoke. The booster club offered to get one for the varsity coach two years ago, but he said that was an expense he could not justify. Like Katy, they run through a sign. Now, I think the sign is no longer paper. And, I know it is re-usable.

None of these things make you play any better.
In fact if I were watching a game where one team

a cheerleader jumping out of a cake...
and the other team just jogged out on the field with nothing...
I would root for the team that had nothing.
Kind of like Tyson back in the day...black shorts, black shoes no socks,

After the tunnel/hemet combination and the channel of Belles and the large handmade sign by the cheerleaders, the Dragons are led out by the Crew carrying the Carroll flag, the Texas flag and the American flag. By the time the team gets through all that, they are past the 50 yard line.

For several years now, I guess Lufkin has been ahead of the curve. We have always had the team run onto the field through the tunnnel, helmet, smoke, drill team and a large Panther banner, alway lead by the cheerleaders with a giant LP flag and 14 flags that spell out Lufkin Panthers. I guess all we lack now is American and Texas Flags and a cannon to fire off. There is also a Panther fan that lives 1/3 mile from the stadium ( outside the city limits )that sends up some great fireworks as the Panthers take the field and when they score all while listening to the game on the radio. No one ask him to do this, it is just something he does as a fan.

Very true wide-e-wide. Just come out of the locker room and get after it minus all the hoopla. However, it was kinda cool to watch Permian come storming out with their big flags that spell Mojo and the one that said 7th flag over Texas. They always backed it up with an a## whooping!

Wide-E-Wide, I have to agree and disagree with you. First, I agree all the "hoopla" as you say, doesn't make you a better team or the best team on the field, the game must be played. On the other hand all the "hoopla" adds to the atmosphere of the game and goes a long way to exhibit school and fan spirit for the game and their school.
Have you ever been to a game without the "hoopla", the band, drill team and cheerleaders? Go to a game condition scrimmage and you will find out quick that the football game itself doesn't support the same atmosphere without all the "hoopla". The sights and sounds of all the student involvment at a football game, the tailgate parties and the BBQ cooking on the pit is what attracts us to the game, the entire package is what makes Texas High School what it is today.

I concur. You can't tell me that teams don't get intimidated when they looked over and they see smoke coming out of the helmet, and the players emerge, and then the band blasts the fight song, and the crowd is on their feet, screaming, and the players run out, the cheerleaders are doing their thing, the flag guys are running, and the players sprint onto the field. I think that might get into your head just a little, especially if it's a powerhouse program such as SLC, Lufkin, Katy etc.

I dont think teams get intimidated by a entrance, if they do then that is sad. I have seen games where at team has all the hoopla and will wind up getting blown out and vice versa, for years teams would bring their circus act to Goldsmith and we would send them home with a big time butt whippin, this after we would just run through the drill team and a paper sign. The entrance is not what will intimidate a team, its the way they play. When Bob Mcqueen coached at Temple, he was known for keeping his team in the locker room while the team would run out onto the field just to make them wait and so his players didnt have to put up with the festivity that is a entrance, he did it to Lewisville in the 93 semifinals and I thought it was pure genius. Once again if a team gets intimidated due to a entrance then get them off the field cause there is something wrong with those boys.

Ive never seen those fireworks or heard them! But then again Ive been sitting on the visitors side since '99! We also have the Panther "growl" they play after a big play. Its ok but they use it too much sometime. Ive actually seen visiting fans get some air under their butts the first time they play the growl! Back in the '70's they had a cannon they shot off after a Panther score.

I couldn't agree more, one of my favorite things about Katy is the continuation of tradition. The cheerleader do work their butts off and have come up with numerous great signs, the best still being in 2001 against Katy Taylor. The huge sign had a very good replica of the 2000 State Ring with the caption "Hey Taylor, Your Daddy can't buy you this." Katy would have a huge fight if they ever went brain dead and fell in line for the smoke and mirrors angle. But I will say the lamest of all is the velcro reusable run throughs, quite pathetic.

First off...football wishes it's tradition was as rich as baseball's.
So making football more like baseball might not be a bad idea.
As far as watching a game with no band, cheerleaders, and drill team...
or no smoke, no inflatable helmets and all that jazz....
The fact remains, THE BEST TEAM IS GOING TO WIN.
All of that other crap is for show. And in sports show has very little
to do with true talent.
Like I said before...I think it is too much.
Give me Earl Campbell tossing the ball to the ref after a touchdown over
TO dancin' like Al Jolsen and looking like a fool.
IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU PLAY ANY BETTER.
And any kid that is intimidated by smoke and over-sized helmets is either
poorly coached or just plain scared. Either way I don't want him on my squad.

the pregame stuff was a timing issue more than anything. teams often like to use the whole field when the other team isn't and when we came out, a few of the stragglers hadn't made the trek south. teenagers don't always hear what the coaches tell them, and so a little friction can occur. no harm, no foul.
