This was in the Opinions section of the Odessa American on Sunday. It was written by the editor of the paper, John Kerr.

Who’s calling these signals?
Makes you wonder who the school board’s picking in tonight’s Super Bowl.
If the rumor’s true, some ECISD board members must know a lot more about football than they’ve been letting on. Word is they’re about to ignore Gary Gaines’ recommendation and deny Odessa High football coach Scott Phillips a new contract.
Gaines, the athletic director of “Friday Night Lights” fame, possesses one of the finest high-school-football minds in the country. He wants to keep Phillips on as coach as a reward for developing a program that wins more than it loses and has beaten Permian twice in the past two years.
What then, you might wonder, does the school board know that Gaines doesn’t?
Then again, maybe the board’s just calling yet another audible.
Maybe its rumored problem with Phillips is more about “playing ball” and kissing up to the right people (or not playing ball and kissing up) that’s put Phillips on the board’s short-timer list.
We’ll know more after an upcoming meeting when the board is scheduled to take up the issue.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the ECISD website the next school board meeting will be on Tuesday, February 21st at 6 PM.
The meetings are held at the ECISD Administrative Building on 804 N. Sam Houston St.

Scott Phillips is an excellent coach. However he does come off as very arrogant and aloof at times. I can easily see how he can rub people the wrong way in Odessa. He rubbed people the wrong way at Plano East and being arrogant and aloof is a positive character trait in Plano:D However, he kicked Plano around for years.
I personally think Coach Phillips is frustrated that he hasn't won a state championship since 92 at Wachachie. He thought he had it at Plano East in the mid to late ninties but Garland and Tyler John Tyler stopped him from winning one. Once he saw that he wasn't going to get it and support dwindled he took off to a more of a football town.
I believe Coach Phillips would jump at the next chance to coach in a town with 1 highschool in 5A. Restless man he is.

He's spent the past 2 offseasons applying for every job he could. He even applied at 4A San Angelo Lakeview, which is about as downtrodden a program as there is in 4A right now. I suspect that has a lot to do with it.

I don't think Gary Gaines would recommend that Phillips get a new contract if he wasn't sure that he wanted to come back.

I thought it was the board that had the problem with him, not Gaines?

It is. If Gary Gaines thinks Scott Phillips deserves and wants a new contract then why shouldn't the "new" school board members.
He is the athletic director and knows a hell of a lot more than they do.

Maybe they're responding to what their constituents want?

On another note, have you heard anything about Coach Mungia interviewing for the vacant OC position at Permian?

Nope. That's kind of interesting since I believe he is a LB coach.

We've got 2 vacancies, it may be for the other one.

Maybe the school board is looking at more than just his coaching abilities. I know the board is not loaded for Ohs like it was for so long, but it's also not loaded for PERMIAN. Coriv, maybe your post saying that Phillips wants to stay is true....but what is the reason....does he really feel a loyalty to stay with Ohs or has he just not found another place to coach that fits for him and his son?
I, too, have heard the rumor about Mungia interviewing for one of the PERMIAN coaching jobs...........but it confuses me a little because Quis was the one who was really trying to land him and his QB son.
One thing about it, until an announcement is made.....they're nothing more than rumors.;)

Maybe i'm wrong but is Mason Munguia even allowed to play for another district team if he transfers?

I'm not sure what the rule is since it would be transferring within the same school district. When Yenzer came to Midland High, his son did not have to lay out. Of course, it was not a transfer within the district. Maybe they don't have to lay out if the transfer is not for athletic purposes.

No not in the same district.

Yenzer came from Hereford and they were a 4A school I believe. I don't think there is any rule against him transfering and playing in that instance.

I was under the impression that if both schools signed off, the transfer could be done.

I don't know the rules enough to say one way or another but you might be right.

When we transferred, we were told that there were two ways to go. Both coaches (and I think the AD's) had to sign off on the transfer.
Secondly, the kid would have no varsity eligibility for one year if both coaches didn't okay the move.
NOW, since then I have heard that there are rules that allow for a three week layoff before the kid is varsity eligible.
Haven't downloaded and read the rules since spring of last year, so that all may be different.

I think you're right Katt. I just remember the my daughter's senior year as a PERMIAN cheerleader was shattered when they were kicked out of the playoffs. The parent(s) of an ohs player moved into PERMIAN district. Both coaches agreed to sign off. PERMIAN signed off but somehow the ohs signature fell thru the cracks UNTIL PERMIAN made the playoffs......and then....WALAH....ohs turned PERMIAN in to the UIL and the rest is history. Sad thing was that PERMIAN reaped very little benefit from the player as he only played a few downs the entire year.

I believe it's 15 days actually. I know when JR Norman moved over from Permian to LEE, I'm pretty sure he sat out 15 days. But I could be wrong about him.
Then back in the fall when we were getting ready to play Kimball and Port Arthur, they had received some Louisiana kids. A very reliable and knowledgeable source told me they wouldn't be eligible for 15 days as well. I can ask her exactly what the ruling is.
Well, I went to elementary and jr. high with the kid in question and he did not move. His family lived in the same house. he got mad at the LB coaches and decided he could start for Permian. I was on the team at OHS with him and knew the whole deal......

I am not exactly sure what this board is about, but I have a good idea.
On the news a few days ago, I saw that the head football coach at OHS was resigning. Something about his mother being diagnosed with cancer or something? May I was too busy to notice the whole story, *shrug*
