NEW: NEISD to appeal UIL realignment for Lee High School

Web Posted: 02/06/2006 05:44 PM CST

From staff reports

The North East Independent School District will ask the UIL on Tuesday to add approximately 450 students from a magnet school to Lee High School's enrollment, which would move the school back to Class 5A for the next school year, NEISD superintendent Richard Middleton said Monday.

The move was prompted after the University Interscholastic League moved Lee to 4A for 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years as part of the UIL's biennial district realignment last week.

In what the UIL said was an unprecendented move in state history, the NEISD had excluded the magnet school International School of the Americas, which is on the Lee campus, from Lee's enrollment for the realignment. The move pushed Lee from the UIL's largest classification to 4A and would have kept ISA students from participating in extracurricular activities without an appeal.

Public outcry from the ISA and Lee communities, including a heated meeting at Lee on Saturday night, forced NEISD to act this week. “What I’ve shown students is a dishonorable way to get to the 4A level,” Middleton said Monday after a meeting with about 20 parents from ISA. “Even if I and Lee desperately want it. I have to make the decision where all the children can compete.”

Lee, which has competed in the UIL's largest classification since 1962, was once a power in the area but hasn't won a football district championship since 1979. Last week, it was realigned into a 4A district with Alamo Heights, Boerne, Fredericksburg, Kerrville Tivy, Memorial and Kennedy.

Trying to cheat and now everyone is going to be screwed up. That will add another team to 26-5A and those who have already set their preseason schedule will have to drop a game. Sending all those programs into a frenzy looking for games. Just suspend them from UIL for two years. The DEATH PENALTY. Its not like they would miss any playoff appearances.

OR Lee is move to 26 and SV is sent to 27.

OR Lee is move to 26 and SV is sent to 27.

I agree, but then SV would appeal for sure. If anything they'd have less road time in 25-5A. Seguin, Austin, and San Marcos are much closer than Corpus and Victoria. Smithson Valley and Westlake in the same district?

Bah....I made a thread when I didn't see this one....but it would make sense for SV leaving the district....and just keeping North East ISD and Judson ISD together.

The Superintendents (spelling) from all school district involved will have to vote. Neisd, Jisd, And Comal Isd will have to vote to accept them back in. then the 4A districts will have to vaote to let them out. If all this happens then Lee will be back in 26-5A making them a nine team district. Then each of the eight teams already in the district will have to cancel one of their preseason games, leaving all those teams scrambling to find a game. 26-5A would then start in week 2, leaving only zero week and week 1 open for preseason games. And each team would recieve a bye at some point in district due to the district now being an odd number.

And I take back when I apologized for being sure that Lee was going to be 5A. They should have been, they will be, and they are some cheating dogs.

why not put them in the cc/victoria district?

why not put them in the cc/victoria district?
That depends on the UIL's policy or rule about placing schools in the ISD's in same district.

That's unfair...Private school kids from outside the school's area get to compete in the UIL, why can't the public school kids compete...damn seperate rules!

It seems like more of an end run around the rules, but they did not realize the out cry.

I was reading where other teams across the state are in the same situation, where they are going to be moved up because of inaccurate numbers.

Why does everyone like to hate on poor Lee?

I actually went to their game vs Seguin during the 2004 season (I was curious and it was a Saturday).

They actually gave Seguin a run for their money that day. I was suprised.

Lee is in an area where there aren't very many KIDS. Most of the people living in that area are OLDer people. So I can understand why they aren't a big sports school.

I don't "hate on them". But I do feel for them getting blown out every week though....I'm not gonna lie that I don't get any satisfaction of seeing Reagan blow someone out but it sucks for the other team....

The following is another school that had to move up because of inaccurate numbers. I think that they have not won a game in two years.
