Despite all our complaining and labeling this the "Bore Bowl", this was one of the higher rated Superbowls in a while. In fact, it did VERY well in the ratings dept.

The stat I look at is the % of households watching from Nielsen. When you look over the last ten years only two years have been lower than the prelim number for this year (41.6). This used to consistently run 44+. The highes ever was SB XVI in 1982 at 49.1. The next highest ones are

1983 48.5
1986 48.3
1978 47.2

The number of viewers is growing because the population and access is growing. One could argue, however, that in the earlier years there were not as much alternative choices, but I think that stat is the really telling one.

Wish I were alive in 1983.....

It was probably rated so high because of the records that were set in this game. The longest rushing TD and longest interception return were both new records for the Superbowl even though they were both only 1 yard over the previous records.

And thank the Lord they broke the longest rushing TD.....

This was the highest rated SB since the last time the Steelers played in the SB. That was when you had 2 of the most loved teams in America playing in the Cowboys and the Steelers.

They said on Sportscenter the other night that this Superbowl was the second most watched show in history trailing only the final episode of MASH.

I loved Jay Leno's comment:

"Apparently 92 million people watched the Super Bowl....well, subtract 5 because obviously the refs weren't watching..."

Ouch.

Yeah that is a shock. A talk show host jumping on the band wagon. I heard Rick Reilly on Dan Patrick today and he thought it was one of the biggest blown up bs he has ever seen. He agreed with 99 percent of the calls.
