When my nepews played HS football in New York it made the papers that just over 1500 came to the homecoming game. Big news there. My sister told them that's a Freshman or JV game in Texas.

I live in the Dallas area. While I would not travel to Houston or SA for the games unless Hebron was involved, I would go to Cowboy Stadium for a 5A (and maybe 4A) title game involving pretty much anybody. Based on attendance last week so would lots of other non-involved people.
My husband just wishes he could get a beer.

I have witnessed that before. Once upon on a time that game drew more fans that the University of Tulsa.

there's not even a point to compare texas football with oklahoma football. jenks and union have been playing each other in the state championship for many, many years in a row now.

I believe the championship games in Oklahoma are not playedi n the Tulsa area. Not that Stillwater is that far away but I know for a fact that Jenks and Union have played in front of 30,000 fans at Skully Stadium on the Tulsa campus before. They typically draw 20K for their regular season showdown which is also played at Skully. While Oklahoma football does not compare to Texas football they still have some passionate fans and good programs there. The stadium in Broken Arrow is nicer than a lot in the DFW. Same with Union.

this is all true. somewhat decent high school football seem to be mainly concerned with the tulsa area of the state, and they do draw some very large crowds for the jenks/union game.

I believe teh former Union coach is over at Broken Arrow now. I think that is the largest HS in Oklahoma and the campus itself looks like a junior college. Reminds me of the campus for the South Allen Wildcats. I know at one point Lawton had a good team with Ike, Midwest City has had some good teams before and at one time Ardmore was solid. But after that you are correct, the Tulsa area seems to dominate Oklahomas larger classes.

Agree, especially on the husband and beer part. The atmosphere last weekend for all of the games was electric. I know more people that stayed for all 4 than only came to a couple.

Why is it that Permian vs Odessa draws 22,000 and Andrews vs Monahans draws 4000?
Why is it that Andrews vs Monahans draws 4000 and Garden city vs Rankin draws 400?
Who has the largest population Okla or Texas?
Who has the largest population Tulsa /OKC or D/FW ?
First of all, it's like how come a watermelon can feed more people than a pecan? Second of all, it's like the comparison of a game in a city of 100.000 in a stadium built to hold 19,000 having 23,000 show up to a game and in a city of zillion people having a game in a house built to seat 100,000 have only 50,000 show up?

I understand the point you are trying to make mojotrain, but your theory just doesn't work out. According to you, 2 big schools will have a bigger crowd than 2 smaller schools. This year Plano and Plano East played. These are a couple of the largest schools in Texas. Aubrey and Pilot Point played this year. They are both 2A schools. While the Plano/Plano East game might have had a larger showing, I guarentee it wasn't that big of a difference between attendance at the two games. A few years back, the Celina/Pilot point game drew a bigger crowd. Total population for the two cities and surrounding farm area - about 6000. Stadium built to hold about 5500. Actual attendance 7500-8000. How does that fit in your theory of attendance based upon size?
Of course I'm saying this without having the benefit of knowing the actual attendance at the Plano/Plano East or the Aubrey/Pilot Point games. Still, I bet my numbers won't be that far off and I think my point will still be valid either way. :)

I've always said that Jenks and Union would make huge games here in Texas.... They should set up two games before the OU-Texas game each year with them.....
If not.... the East Texas Classic should invite them to play Tyler Lee, Tyler John Tyler, Lufkin, Longview, etc. as the drive is not that bad for them to bring their band, etc. down.
My experience is that the State title game can be very underwhelming attendance wise. Wasn't it the CHill-Cy Falls game game a few years ago that looked to be very empty?

I'd def. be down for a game against either one of those two programs.

Can't address Cy Falls, but CHill doesn't travel well within the metroplex. I would certainly not expect a big turnout from them outside.

You are correct Pied. That game was not well attended at all and as SWM has said, Chill does not travel well at all here in the metroplex.
I also got a chuckle out of a poster making a comment about Jenks and Union playing in the Oklahoma title game. I guess they are the only state accustomed to having a team or two always winning or playing for state championships. We know that has never or will never happen in Texas :notworthy;)

No specifically speaking I was in reply to attendence between to Okla schools compared to that of two Texas schools. There is a reason for that that may not mean okla fans lack interest.
I had two, maybe three points. First you can't compare Texas HS Football with Oklahoma HS football.
Second I make a point that fans in Okla are just as passionate as Texas fans at all levels. The difference, is in the number of people that each state has. There is no comparasion.
My third point is 50-60,000 fans attending a game in a all weather palace built to seat 100,000 plus and draw fans from a metro area containing, what, 2 million-3 million potential fans to see a Playoff game between two notiorious teams, pales in comparasion to 22-23000 fans playing in stadium built for 19,000 drawing from a population of 100,000 potiential fans in a game played between average highschool teams. This is a Texas to Texas comparison.
It looks like you too have good examples of excellent fan following of some small schools. I wasn't defending or don't need to defend Permian/Odessa fan following, I was just using them as a example in comparasion of fan following.
Other than that, at any given moment there more cars on I-35 in the limits of D/FW that there are on hwy 191 between Odessa and Midland. or if we wish to stay with the Okla theme, on hwy 81 between Duncan and Marlow Okla. See?

very good points. my roommates from last year were Tuttle h.s. (about 40 minutes from norman) graduates and former football players there, and i saw a regular season game and a playoff game there. the entire town shuts down on friday nights, the police escort the team buses into the stadium parking lot, and the stadium was packed on both occasions. the population difference is key, and i completely agree.

LOL, the last time I was in Tuttle Shutting the town down would have included closing a service station and not much else. About 1953 or there a bouts. I bet the town didn't have over 150 living in it. It was a farming community.
