I think you are right.
O'Connor is going to have another solid season.
Judson and Smithson Valley will always be up there although I think it is going to take a few games for Judson to get on a roll with all of the talent they lost.
With Fanuzzi, Churchill can beat anyone as they proved last year.
Reagan and Seguin both have a lot of talent coming back and are programs on the rise.
I think Madison is going to have a down year....Madison lost Caflisch and Green and those guys were their main threats. I don't see them as more than a 4 seed in 26.

not sure about region 4
Other than Westlake and Seguin, I really don't see any top ten teams outside of 26 and 27 5a.
San Marcos always has a chance to win some games because of their style of play... but they lost a whole lot.
I am pretty sure either Austin High or Bowie will emerge as a pretty good team... maybe both.

o'connor wil lthe #1 team in Sa at the begining of next year there whople team is coming back they wew all Sophs and juniors there gonna make some noise.

One more to watch will be Jay....Last year they were fast...and young. You nailed the rest of the rest of the teams...

Possibly, MacArthur, but they have a tendency to fade.

Jay looks good to me with what they have back. They return more all-district picks than any other team in Region 4 that I've checked out so far.
O'Connor aslo returns a lot as most have pointed out. Judson and SV are basically givens to be in the top five until the other teams prove they shouldn't be.

Yeah, I'm not so hot on the teams in Corpus and the Valley, but I was thinking of probable playoff teams and then ranking from there.

Seguin behind McAllen Memorial, Victoria Memorial, Austin High, and Madison? That is just insane. The only one you could make an argument for is Madison.
I think Westlake is much too high.
1)Smithson Valley
2)O'Connor
3)Jay
4)Judson
5) Westlake
6-8) Seguin, Reagan, Churchill (Interchangeable... I can't make up my mind)
9) MacAurther

11) San Marcos

I think part of their problem was switching QBs on every drive....Is #21 comming back? I remember he was the only one that could catch Greg during the game.

26-5A is going to be a huge tossup next year. I see no clear cut winner, with SV and Judson reloading, Madison lost Caflish and Green, Wagner is new, Mac could be good but they fade out quick, Reagan IMHO will make the playoffs for the first time ever, Roosevelt could be good and I am wondering if Sr RB Zach Dorsey will make a big impact. I played Jr. High football with him at Kirby. Churchill, if Fanuzzi stays healthy should put up a good fight.
I don't see any undefeated teams coming out of the 26-5 next year.

I didn't imply Seguin was "Gods gift to region 4"... I had them ranked between 6 and 8. If you knew what Seguin had returning, you would realize that isn't far fetched at all. Maybe the best defense in the area last year is going to be MUCH better this year. The offense is going to be improved too. I think that in itself makes Seguin a threat and a top team.... (Note: I posted this later in the thread I just thought I would add it here too)

I know a lot of people on this board like to see how teams pit against each other but I think that's an innacurate way to measure things. Any team can be as high as their potential or as low. Some teams get up more for others, and the matchups are different. Coaches prepare differently. There is just too many intangibles.
As for the LaJoya tidbit....I remember from the Reagan-Harlingen game that our guys were pushing the Harlingen O and D lines everywhere. Now, I wouldn't go so far and label Seguin a racist either....

So you compare me to someone who commits genocide because I make obvious statements about the Valley schools race.. which leads to the size. Everybody knows the Valley is mostly Mexicans. Everybody knows Mexicans tend to be small little peep squeeks.
Okay? What does my old HS's mascot have to do with anything? lol Is that what you do in the Valley, compare mascots? You certainly don't play football.
Judsons has size and athletes where needed. You can plug those little guys in here and there.

Quite an exchange you guys have been having. Hope you don't mind if I give you my take on all this. I am familiar with the Valley as I have some friends and relatives there. I have seen Valley teams play. I will say this. The valley teams play at least as hard as any other in the state. The fan support is better than most other areas and I have seen high school football in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston areas. They can play good football. The reality is that best Valley teams cannot match up with the team speed and size of the better teams in the bigger areas. Every once in a while a Valley team competes with a good team from another area, but usually Valley teams cannot hang with the big dogs. The Valley is growing very fast and this could help it get more competitive. But until then, I'm afraid they just don't have the complete package to be able to win against the state's elite.

Ok, getting some love from Seguin. Mac will be in the thick of the 265a chase. They return 13 starters and 2 starters due to injury
Starters from 2005
QB Schmid (Through 5 games until injury, he had better #s then Udell)
RB Craig
RB Sharaim
WR Odom
TE Williamson (will go both ways at DE this year)
OL Armstrong
OL Williams
OL Shussler (out after 4th game)
DL Johnson (out after Clark game)
DL Perez
DE Hickman
LB Gallegos (had to play DT due to injuries)
LB Mondragon
LB/DB Kinney
LB/DB Ricker brothers
Players not in starting rotation but had plenty of playing time.
WR Loftin (played in 3/4wr sets)
DB Brown
That looks really solid.. I will be keeping an eye on Mac this year... I want them to do well as the underdog in 26.

I think that in itself makes Seguin a threat and a top team.

Seguin is bettering himself by going to college, and getting a degree, and maybe becoming a writer for ESPN or FOx, and RGV is bettering the nation we live in by helping take down people that we really don't need in our society, now can we get back to football, and how O'Connor is going to take the state by surprise? :D

Everybody, but a QB and 2 O-linemen.
I think the RB from Last year #10 will move back to QB, which I think he is a little better at, and the RB we lost to injury looks sharp this year. I alos think the 2 O-linemen stepping up are going to be pretty good, they look to have quick feet and a pretty good grasp of the offense even though they are young. On Defense we replace 1 DE and CB and Safety, but in the secondary they rotated a lot and all got some pretty good playing time. Should be interesting to see when Spring ball comes around.

I agree that MacArthur would beat a lot of the others I put in my top 15. However I had to consider who the probable playoff teams would be. I figure that SV, Judson, Madison, and Reagan will make the playoff out of that district, so the brahmas are the odd man out.
Bastrop lost most of their best players off of their playoff team of last year. Austin returns more all-district players than anyone in district 25-5A. They control the ball and clock better than anyone I saw last year and they have a stout defensive front and LB corps. Their Head Coach was the DC at RR Westwood three yeas ago when they beat Westlake. He knows how to beat those guys, and led the Maroons to a halftime tie with the Chaps this past year. If not for some awful punting, they might have pulled it out.
As far as the Valley teams go. They do play good football down there and are getting better every year. Granted, they don't have the number of athletes as everyone farther north, look for a player like Brandon Stephens to carry his team. Also, La Joya is one of the biggest schools in the state. Just by having morre kids to choose from, gives them a greater chance to have a better team. Someone will make a breakthrough down there eventually, and when they do, it will be a big surprize.

I get what you were doing about the whole playoff deal... but this wasn't a who is going to make the playoffs thread... just a power rankings thread.. going by nothing more than talent and Mac should have been in there.
You think Madison will make the playoffs over Churchill and Mac? I just can't see that this year.
Hey, I respect your opinion and surely you know more about Austin and its football than I.... but I am a tad bit baffeled.... you are pumping up Austin High's defense... and then I go and look up the numbers and the numbers don't impress me... giving up 26 points per game is very mediocre. I know that you insist that they took you guys to the wire last year... but maybe Westlake just didn't get up for the game? I seem to recall Seguin taking Westlake to the wire the last time we played them 3 years ago (In coach Carsons first year)... with a far less talented team than we have had the past two years and especially this upcoming year.
badger95
02-07-2006, 12:28 PM
did I say Madison? I meant Churchill. I understand what you're saying and agree that MacArthur will be very good and deserves to be in there under straight powere ratings. I expect that Roosevelt will be much improved under ex-Tivy coach Neal LaHue, who was the offensive coordinator at Westlake in '96 when they won their state champioship. Jim Streety always put a good team on the field at Madison.
Austin high was plagued by youthfull mistakes. Lots of turnovers and a new offense really slowed them down early. But they came on very strong at the end of the season and barely missed out on a playoff berth over Bastrop.
I saw them play twice. Against Westlake they, had three possessions and the Chaps had two in the first half. The score was 14-14, and the maroons had the ball for about 22 minutes of the 24 minutes.
Against Clemens after giving up several big plays in the first half and falling behind, they completely shut down the Buffs in the second half.
I expect that they will be very much improved this year. I did list them as a sleeper, remember.

What makes you think yall can talk if yall havent backed anything up. Im from the valley and i went to the semis. so that kinda narrows it down right.
ok about the whole RVGbadboy thing. madison gave SV a way better game than LU score doesnt matter no matter what you say. not one valley team would make it out of round 1 if the were in a the SA area. so dont go bragging about how valley teams go deep in the playoffs. of course you are going to go somewhere playing other valley teams anyway. And a word of advice(and i swear i mean nothing by this) you are trying to make your self look good by saying that your police department is one of the best in south texas but you point out that you live in one of the worst parts so it makes your town look bad. lets stick to football and not personal attacks seguin

not that the 3rd round is DEEP, but its deeper than Reagan has EVER BEEN....and its DEEPER than Seguin will EVER GO!!!!
Reagan and Seguin would go undefeated in football if they played down in the valley. Reagan went 4-3 in one of the toughest districts in the state, and Seguin lost the first round of the playoffs to the Finalist Judson Rocket team.
DiamondJ2
02-07-2006, 04:14 PM
In all the years that Judson has played Valley teams, I've always been impressed with the fan support, the hard play of the teams, and most of the coaches. When a Valley team makes it to the playoff round against SA area schools, it seems the whole Valley supports that team which is how it should be. On the other hand when Judson (especially) or SV make it to semifinal or finals, they have more area fans cheering against them than for them. I guess success in the immediate region causes hard feelings or jealousy instead of outside the school support. I can't praise enough about the Valley fan base support and the hospitality that they have shown us 90% of the time.
As for Seguin having a great defense, they have the suspects, but the district will be a little tougher than last year. The number that they piled up may not be as impressive. But they could still be a force.
thanks Diamond thats all we ask for is some support..it will make texas ball much better overall..believe me we know where we stand but we wont take crap from anyone who tries to put us down anymore..times are changing and the valley is makin some strides as well as the rest of south tx. we have a ways to go but we have faith..one day it will happen and it will be very very speacial..IMO more speacial than previous titles..

Previous Titles? Oh yeah that one that Donna won back in the fifties when they were 2A.
I hope that a team from the Valley does make some noise deeper in the playoffs than they normally do. Also, be proud of how far you do get. A third round playoff game looks the same on a banner anywhere.

Last time I checked, since my girlfriend graduated from HS there, Seguin had a considerable contingent of hispanics and their OWN fair share of economically challenged. Judson isn't rich either and most of SA is pretty dang poor. Its not all of you, but most of you all are fooling yourselves. . .

On SASports.com message board some guy is Boasting about how Del Rio is going to be a Playoff team this year and how they shutdown every run game in the district last season(I guess holding JAY to 300 Rushing yards is shutting them down)! IT's hilarious! IF you guys get a chance you should stop by and look at the ridiculous stuff that guy is saying!

I think it is great... Judson only truly sustained one drive on us while the game was still in doubt... and we were missing our best defensive player (who is returning)... we have the only two first team all area defenders returning and a defensive linemen who had 14 sacks returning.

Reagan and Seguin would go undefeated in football if they played down in the valley. Reagan went 4-3 in one of the toughest districts in the state, and Seguin lost the first round of the playoffs to the Finalist Judson Rocket team.
Amen.

Then again Judson had one of their weakest offenses in years, averaging only 26 ppg. I think Seguin had a good defense, and I see them winning the current 25-5A this year. Maybe we will meet in the playoffs again!

I think it comes down to us and Westlake in 25. I don't know what all Westlake is returning but the team is always disiplined and that will win you a lot of games.
As far as us meeting in the playoffs, I can only hope... how does it work now? Two schools with the highest enrollment go D1 and the two smaller enrollment playoff teams go D2? If so, where does Judson rank as far as enrollment numbers go in 26? Any possability that they go D2? I need to look up the enrollment numbers for 25..

A valley guy chiming in here. Wow, this thread got ugly in a hurry. By the way, rgv_badboy, Seguin referring to the "Mexicans" in the Rio Grand Valley is not an insult (although Mexican-American would be more precise). "Mexican" is a nationality, not an insult. And, although there are Latin-Americans from other parts of Central and South America in the valley, the vast majority of the population is indeed of Mexican descent.
I hate the term "Hispanic". It is so vague. Far more precise would be Latin-American (when referring to people from Central and South America in general), better still would be getting rid of the stupid idea that being "Mexican" is somehow insulting. Last time I checked people of Russian, Japanese, Korean, German etc. etc, did not get worked up in a tizzy over being referred to by their nationality. I once saw a t-shirt in the Harlingen mall that said "I am not Hispanic, I am not Latino, I am not Chicano... I am MEXICAN." So true-- being Mexican is nothing to be ashamed of.
I agree that, based on past performance, valley teams should not be ranked in the preseason top 15, barring an unusually talented squad that already proved itself. However, Seguin, don't be to cavalier. The last time you played Harlingen in the playoffs, you lost (Harlingen also beat an Austin team that year, btw). Valley teams have beaten SA and Austin teams, just not very often. However, it makes it all the more sweet when it happens. Knowing that the bad boys up state lost to a bunch of "pip squeek Mexicans" sure is funny to those same Mexicans when it happens. At the 3A level, the folks in Port Isabel do it regularly.
Lonny is right, Region 4 in general should stick together. And folks in SA who deride the Valley for being dirty, corrupt, crime-ridden, etc., etc. should know that folks in Dallas and the rest of the state mock SA for the same reasons-- often using thinly disguised racism. I know-- I herd it constantly at college in West Texas. I remember one time, when a group of friends took a trip to SA, one blonde Metroplex girl made the remark "I never thought a city full of Mexicans could be this nice." Racism against Mexicans and other Latin Americans is absolutely TOXIC for Texas.

Thats probably about the most accurate list right now. I can't wait until Jay and O'Connor play next year, because I know its going to be the District Title game and OC will take it this time, I think our young defense figured out how to stay home and watch for run after that game! It was sick, I watched the video of that game for 3 weeks straight after that embarrasing loss, and all Jay did was shift their TE to the opposite sid of our stud DE and run the ball the other way, and our defense did not catch on, I was like WTF!!!!! Crazy!, I don't think Clark will be that high in the rankings though after the first 3 games of District. I think Marshall will take their place.

Things will probably change in the future for the Valley schools, but the reason, well, just look who were the dominant teams in San Antonio in the 50's, then in the 60's, 70's etc. Then look at the teams that are now cellar dwellars or can't compete in playoff times with the 90's and 21st century leaders in SA area. I will admit you guys would probably still beat us in a head to head game though... mentally you guys have a huge edge on everyone besides Smithson Valley. I still think we have more talent returning than Judson, though. We will not lose to anyone on are schedule this year except for maybe Westlake... that will put us at 9-1 with a win over Madison (Even though they are down this year). Clemens without James Henry wasn't anywhere near as good as they were with him. One of the few times when one player does make that much of a difference.
I don't know what Seguin's non-district schedule is, but they could easily go 7-1 or 6-2 in 25-5A if their defense is a stacked as it is fortold.

I can't think are many more pissed off teams than Reagan this off-season after how they missed the playoffs last year. They had it all in their grasp, and then Judson happened.
I imagine the Reagan players are working very hard. It'll be interesting to see if they continue to improve this fall or take a step (or three) back.
I dunno if anyone believes in any 'game day superstition' stuff but during mid-season my parents bought me a new car and whenever I took that car to a game, we won. And the air bag wasn't working oen day so we dropped it off at our mechanic and that was the same week as Judson.....very strange.
But I do know that the players are working hard for next year.

lol, let me rephrase it, it wasn't "new". And our mechanic like specializes in this kind of car and he could tell it was disconnected. And the kinda of car it is, it sorta needs the airbag.

Have you heard about the fake airbags. For some reason they are legal and you can have them installed in your car. I DON'T THINK SO. Its just a peice of foam that goes where the bag is supposed to go, and when you wreck it just pops the casing off. KSAT 12 did a special on them.

Yeah. But those fake ones are put in with the owners consent. The owner ALLOWS the person to put in the fake ones because they cost less. Screw that, I would rather pay a lot and live than pay a little and smash my face on the steering wheel.

Well, they will have all offseason and the whole season to think about this past years's game, because the Rockets and Rattlers won't play each other until the final game of the season on a Saturday next year. Judson's new school, Wagner, will make the playoffs in a shorter time period than Reagan did, oops, eventually will.

Badboy, I don't know what you are smoking if you think that 40-50% of the valley is Anglo. In Sharyland, maybe, but both Hidalgo and Cameron Co. are around 85% Mexican-American/Latin American, about 12-13% Anglo, the rest is Asian/African American.

1st coach at Reagan was Kincaid who was the coach at Churchill. No comment on his coaching at either school.
Since this is a football forum, I was talking about football, of course. Reagan is coming up on their 7th year in 5A. No way it will take 6+ years for Wagner to make playoffs.

With all due respect, the Valley is 90% Hispanic. You have a few pockets in which there are some Anglos, plus the Winter Texans (which you can't really count)...but the vast majority of residents are Hispanic. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise..McAllen is not even close to a 40% or 50% ratio. It is still 90-10 or maybe an 85-15.

You know I do not understand why you guys are on the valley. They have good football that is well coached, they just lack some of the size and speed that other teams from the rest of the state has. Their traditions are strong, their coaching is good, and their pride is ever lasting. You guys from San Antonio dogging the valley need to realize that the rest of the state views San Antonio in the same way. They think we play second rate football here. Those of us who know anything about football and the strength of San Antonio know different. Lay off the Valley, They do play good football, they are well coached, and they do the best they can with what they are given. You know David Sanchez had good success while he was at Holmes, took them all the way to the Semi-finals. I know he beat a good Marshall team that year in the QTR FINALS. But now he is down in Laredo and not winning very many games. Did he become a bad coach or does he not have the same talent? You can get as much as one could give.

Basically what you are saying is the valley is full of thugs? I am sorry us in SA and central Texas were brought up better than to go out, get drunk, and get into fights. Seriously, you are pumping your chest out over something that you should be ashamed of. You say fighting is bad yet you belittle us because we choose not to?
I, like my friends, am not scared to fight.... but we aren't going to go out looking for trouble because we are civilized and have values and have the basic concept of right and wrong nailed down.
As far as Hispanics go, I have fought 3 of them and handled every one of them very easily.... I didn't go looking for it... they asked for it in various ways.

Donna is a place all its own....ITS NOT GHETTO, there arent really SLUMS THERE, its actually QUITE the OPPOSITE it really rural, with lots of ranches and farms.....there are ALOT of HUGE EXPENSIVE HOMES....but NOT REALLY ALOT OF HIGH PAYING JOBS....if you knwo what i mean, those are some BAD MOFOS that will kill you for looking at them wrong....Donna is a very tough place....they find dead bodies out their by the canals ALL THE TIME....
Either way, all FIGHTING IS BAD....it is FAR better to resolve problems peacefully, but unfortunately alot of SOCIETY as a whole doesnt see things that way...if they EVER do, we'll be in a better place.
then why would you try to bring up SA people backing down to a valley person. im trying to argue you are just not making much sense friend
As far as Hispanics go, I have fought 3 of them and handled every one of them very easily.... I didn't go looking for it... they asked for it in various ways.
