What is your opinion? Should girls be allowed to play football?

In an all girls league, yes. At the varsity level... especially 5a... not at all.

They did an outside the lines once about boys playing in all girls volleyball and field hockey in Pennsylvania. It is embarassing for the girls, because they have nothing to lose and nothing to gain. Everybody expects them to lose to the boys, and when they do well everybody just mocks the guys instead of congratulating the girls. There is a reason why there are girls sports and boys sports. It is because boys and girls are different, therefore they do not need to compete against each other.

I'll give you a combined Lonny/Miss Kitty train of thought.
Playing football can cause permanent damage to a girl's body. Their body and frame is not likely to recover from a vicious hit as fast as boy's do. Obviously, some girls have the mental aptitude to play the game and they might have the physical speed to compete, but they're going to be very limited in what positions they play just because they don't have the proper body composition for many positions. Even the most non-violent positions have some threat of injury. I think most parents should say no to the idea, but there are probably a few girls out there that can do an effective job playing against the boys.
My oldest daughter is strong, fast, and athletic, but she's also thin. The advantage she has over boys her age and older than her right now will evaporate as they get stronger. I'd love for her to play sports, but I don't feel good about her playing football.

This reminds me of an old movie starring Kathy Ireland ( for those of you who don't know her, check your Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Calendar:D ). anyway she played this kicker (converted soccer player) who was awesome.
I just feel that if the right girl comes along with the talent, they should be allowed to try out and if they are better than the boys at thier position then they should be allowed to play. At that point, I don't think you could turn them down, legally or any other way and why should you?

Girls do play 5a Football in Tx. We all know the UIL is scared to death of Law suites, case in point, the privates.
Besides, the UIL figures that the typical Texas highschool male would always like to play with girls and the privates.:D

Alright, I can guarentee I'm about to offend the hell out of some people but here it goes..
In high school, we talked this topic over plenty of times. We talked to out friends that were girls and that were on the softball team. There was about half of the softball team that year that made one of the 3 all district teams. Me and my baseball buddies had a down year and finished 4 games out of the play-off race. Only 2 of us made an all district team and they were the underclassmen. We challenged the girls to come out to the baseball field and we would pitch one of our JV pitchers against them in a 3 inning scrimmage. They declined.
We on the other hand took up their offer to come out and play against their entire line up of softball starters which finished I think 4th in district and did not make the play-offs due to a tie breaker. We faced their ace, all district, all city pitcher who got signed to a college for softball.
The final score?
Boys baseball 13
Girls softball 1
game was only 3 innings...
That one run was UNEARNED, by the way.
Girls are different than boys, therefore, need different leagues.
I will tell you what, if a girl would have come to try out for the baseball team, she would not have made it, but just by trying out it would have opened up a door for all the guys who either got cut because they were on the bubble or were just back ups to switch over and take all the spots on the girls softball team. Same thing goes for basketball.
I think the WNBA needs to have a smaller ball and have the rim lowered to 8 feet because girls just are smaller and if that happened then maybe some WNBA games would not be 66-59 final scores.
Don't get me wrong, I love women.
I love 'em in the kitchen, in the house, in the bed room, in the locker room, anywhere. I LOVE women period. I can sit and admire a nice women all day and all night long and I will gladly open up my wallet to take a nice girl out to dinner and a movie and I will gladly have her watch a good ball game with me, but if she wants to play in the game with me, she better be able to keep up because guys play to WIN.
I am not saying that girls do not play to win, but I am saying it is night and day between womens athletics and mens athletics.

If girls want to play football than they better be ready to take a hit by the big boys. It is not fair for girls to play football at only certain positions. If i was a coach and a girl wanted to play football for my team, than she would have to go through all the same hitting drills as anyone else. If she is good than hey i would let her play but if shes not and couldnt take a hit then she wouldnt make it.
Im all for girls leagues too.... idk why girls want to play with all the guys so much. If they want to play in guy leagues than put shaq in the wnba tiger on the lpga and federer in womans tennis.

I am not comfortable with it you have to ask yourself would you allow your daughter to play and could you live with yourself if she got hurt and/or could not have children because of it. I had to deal with the situation when I used to coach youth league tackle football. After I talked to her she decided to help out the receivers coach, I was glad I was able to offer her an alternative.

my best friend growing up played against Mia Hamm when she played for Wichita Falls Notre Dame. She ran all around them .They didn't realize it was a girl until halftime. then the coaches went to town on them for losing to a girl.
It was junior high. It was 1a schools.
she's a world class athlete. they were average( at best) athletes,
I stand behind my initial post, this is truly on capability. Boys on boys team, and girls on girls teams.

lmao that was funny.."now your closed!"
Boys and girls sports are separated for a reason. Before the boys hit their growth spurts, there isn't the physical advantage. Once they hit high school, the physical differences are too much for a contact sport. I could see a girl kicker, but that's it.

That movie was Necessary Roughness and I don't think the boys minded having her on the team!:D
I thought about kickers and punters, but they also run the risk to get crushed, although not like some positions.

Our discussion is getting a little sidetracked since this started off about football. I've already said football is pretty much a no-go for girls and I have 2 of them, including one that would beat a lot of boys at football right now. She will lose that advantage later on because she's not going to have the muscle mass that they do. There are some exceptions with women that are real buff, but it's the exception and not the norm. Safety is an issue in football even if the girl has great ability. I agree that boys have a natural advantage over girls in sports, but I'm all for the girls playing the boys if they have the ability. Michelle Wie doesn't win tournaments, but she can drive off of the men's tees and she's only 16, so give her some time. I'm all for women racing the men if they have the aptitude. They'll never let men play the women (except that transvestite golfer from Australia!) because they have an advantage, but it's OK for the women because they are stepping up in competition. That's fine with me.

really now, why do girls wanna play football, umm.....i dont understand why some like...girl would wanna get tackled and hit hard and pushed on the groud and go thru long practices....all for what? to get secluded in the locker room (having to dress out in the Trainers room propbably) and to have trash talked about by some guys upset dad.....no thank you lol
but hey if some big scray girl wants to play..more power to her.... I would just think it would be to hard for her gain respect among players and fans....

That argument will get you no where...Men can loose their ability to have children too. I think you made a mistake as a coach. I've had girls play on my baseball teams and they did fine. One even made it to high school baseball. Football is a different sport, but the day is coming when they will be allowed to play.

Football IS a different sport it is not baseball and I had head hunters on my team and we played against head hunters. If a player can not protect themselves you have a duty to protect them.

I had a couple girls on my JH team. It was embarrassing. All the teams would talk **** about us and laugh at the girls. We had a 300lb girl (yes JH) and she was horrible. We also had this girl that was a good female athlete and never touched the field. They completely sucked and no guy would hit them during practice. And this was JH the time when girls are still suppose to be more grown than guys. I will admitt there are a couple of girls I know that would probally be pretty good. Like I know a girl who is like 6'2 220 lbs and ripped, but she would only be average at best on our team. Its not a fair comparison to compare the best girl athletes to the average guys. Yeah they match up against the alright players, but what about them versus the
6'7 340 lb guys?? You cant honestly tell me a girl could play with that kinda size. Hell I could barely do it. Girls can play football, but only in girls leagues. They have no place on the field with the men.

Lots of good reasong on both sides of the issue.
I believe in school sports as long as there are boys and girls teams available for the same sport then they should only play with the appropriately sexed teams. (EX: Baseball - Boys, Softball -Girls, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer)
If there is not a sport for both sexes such as football then the opposite sex should be allowed to try out and if good enough to make the team be treated just like the rest of the individuals on the team.
If there is no boys team say for Tennis then the boys should be allowed to play if one chooses to try an dcan make the team just like the girls in football.
You can debate the sexes thing all the way around the globe and never resolve it. I remember when boys did not take home ec., but now boys sign up for those classes because there are lots of girls in it. (I know i did, not cause i wanted to learn to cook or sew.)
The other $$$$ issue is the law suits that come as soon as you deny someone the opprotunity to try and play for a team that is usually one sided with regards to a particular sex.
My 16 year old dausghter loved to play football when she was younger and was better than a lot of the boys her age. I told her she could play if she wanted to and that we would support her. We also explained a lot of the other things that could play into her decision to participate in these activities and let her make her decision. After evaluating her options, she chose to pass on the football thing and concentrait on soccer and track to which she was able to make the varsity teams in both these sports as a freshman and current sophmore. I think she made the right choices and i could not be more proud of her either way.
I do sleep easier knowing that i think she made a the right decision based on my beliefs as a father to my daugher and my concern for her well being and future.
But should she change her mind, i will support her in her decisions after giving her fatherly advice.
I also thiink that parents should talk to all their kids regardless of sex etc. and explain some of the risks involved and what is expected from them if they participate in sporting activities.
Encourage and guide your kids and that will lead to success for them and in life.

I don't think girls should play football, and it's really not because I don't think some probably could do it.
Until guys start playing in the LPGA, WNBA or go out for the softball team, I don't think women should play in the mens leagues. I don't see why playing in womens' leagues wouldn't be enough. If Annika Sorenstam can play in a PGA event, why can't Shaq play a WNBA game? :D
I think just about everyone acknowledges there are world class women athletes in the world today, so I don't think that's the big issue. The physical and chemical make up of men and women is obviously different, and our sports must account for that to keep a level playing field for each in my opinion.
i voted certin positions. trainer would be a position because if your team wins state the trainers get rings as well but any ther posistion i would have to disagree with

I think they should play as a kicker, if they played at a skilled position they would be broken in half, just think if an average high school girl went up against Sergio Kindle(think about that one & you will realize the end result), physically it is very different I think Kicker & Punter is the only position they can play if they decide to do it, but they want to play a skilled position do it in a girls league.
