View Full Version : Round 2 - Cy Woods @ Westfield

Well, the matchup has been set. Cy Woods and Westfield are playing Friday night at Leonard George.
Any thoughts?

Are the Stangs at home or away? Neutral site?
Not that it matters. Cy Woods likes to run and pass, but they give up points as well. Westfield should keep the defensive intensity up, protect Walker again, spread with the pass and pound the rock. If that happens, I see another 14-21pt win.;) Or we could just be in for a scorefest.:D
If I'm not mistaken, both teams have scrimmaged each other for the past couple seasons so they are familiar with each other.

Why at Leanard George and how do you know? Seems like an awfully small field.... Woods played at the klein field last year... Why wouldn't it be at woods this year. I don't think it makes much sense to be on Westfields home field...

The coin-flips happened last night after the game (though I think the coaches should have gotten together before the game and done the coin-flips so they could announce the date/time/loc before fans left).
Since the CW never played a Spring school in the playoffs (and Westfield hasn't played one in years), there was no prior obligation to fulfill. Thus, the coin-flips. I'm not a fan of playing in your home stadium after the first round either, but it happened to work about well for the Mustangs, this time. Trust me, the CW will show up and fill their half of the stadium. The Westfield fans, hopefully, will do the same.
And to answer slim's comment- yes, they've scrimmaged the last 2 years. They know each other and probably have cases of film to watch of each other.
I also think the Ridge Klein game was already set at Berry Center for Friday night 7:30.

If Westfield protects Walker he will have a field day. If Cy-Woods can get consistent pressure on Walker, this game is a blowout and a Woods win, but if not, I see a shoot out. I'm leaning more towards a shoot out over anything though. The Westfield corners need to play well; they let KO's Michael Starr have tons of YAC when we played them - that can't happen again.

Good insight. I see this game as a pretty close one (and lower-scoring than most). These teams can (and probably will) know each other as well as any 2nd round match-up, statewide. We'll see, though.

Cy Woods really need to control the penalties this week. They had entirely too many penalties against RR Westwood. I dont see a blowout, but I think Cy Woods will win this one.

Callahan plays safety. He can play corner or any other position.
I get a huge kick out teams that continue to punt the ball to him

Find the Klein Oak vs. Notre Dame thread......two dudes went on about it for about 100 pages. Against teams that primarily run some teams use the safety as a backup LB. They even rush the qb with him....go figure......

If I am not mistaken....Westfield's punter kicks like a rugby player. Not exactly a clean punt....tends to bounce all over the place.

Well, I welcome a game that is so close that the style of punt by one team might be the decisive factor. But, at the same time, they have 3 guys who can punt, two of them from off the soccer team, so count on more soccer-style punts than rugby-style.

style of punt doesn't matter but kicking it to Bryce is a big mistake (or a great opportunity depending on your perspective;)).
This will be an interesting mach-up. They scrimmaged each other earlier in the year. I think the game will be close. I'm not a prognosticator in terms of score but high scoring is likely. If we (Woods) get Jonathan Cross back this week we should be at full strength with a legit deep threat.
As I said at the beginning of the year and it remains true each game, I think this team will be as good as the defense. I have a sense that the D has improved throughout the year. They allowed 21 point against Westwood (1 td was a kick return) and one of the tds was from a short field after a turnover.

In the 3 games they lost (and none of these are excuses- just the reason they lost)...
Dekaney - lost three starters in the first quarter (their All-America DT, their TE, and their FB)
Klein Collins - well, the Tigers are undefeated (no shame in losing that one), and Westfield lost by coming up inches short on 4th and 3 from the 5 in double-OT
Klein Oak - team just played like garbage- no better reason than that
Now, we're down to the season that counts more. They're 1-0, so now they have to work to be 2-0.

Sure:
(1) Protect the ball and let first down turn into touchdowns.
(2) Avoid mistakes.
(3) Pitch a shutout.

Now that's the ticket.....no mistakes which would include:
1. Penalties
2. Fumbles
3. Interceptions
4. Missed tackles
5. Incorrect play calling both offense and defense
Of these I pick these three......the team that has the fewest of these mistakes wins......

I somewhat agree with your comment except that I would put interceptions ahead of missed tackles for Woods since they sling the ball all over the place. The other mistake that I would add is:
6. Kicking the ball to Bryce Callahan:eek:

1) First of all the Cowboys suck!
2) The QB's will determine this game. ......
Woods QB as improved as the year progressed and most importantly reduced his turnovers and increased his passing effeciency, He has run the ball well this year too
The Westfield QB (who in fact has been a mentor to several younger CFISD QB's) has had a great year. His TD to interception ratio is really outstanding.
Should be a great game - Woods should find a way to win. They seem to be on a roll.
Good luck to both teams and hope it ends injury free

Walker throws a very catchable ball and has an accurate deep ball. If he gets time your secondary will be shredded, fortunately for Cy-Woods their oline doesn't block too well.

Really? They get 50+ pancake blocks a week and they average 400 yards of total offense per game. If that classifies as "doesn't block too well", this is news to me. That seems like an effective OL to me.

I'm thinking about the Oak game where Walker was getting smacked throughout the game...there were guys downfield he could hit, but he wasn't getting time. Maybe they block better, but then I saw Westfield let a LB off the edge unblocked multiple times against Collins on TV.

I will be at this game and can't wait. When I've seen Westfield they have shown me 2 different teams each time. I also like this Cy Woods team. Huntsman tends turn the ball over to much, but he can make big plays.
I wouldn't kick it to Callahan of Cy Woods. I also would not kick it to #1 for Westfield. Man, he can GO!
And I'm not sure if Westfield definitely has the better 'D'. It should definitely be a good game - it just depends on how these teams match up.

While I enjoy hearing the banter and opinions from outsiders, I find it difficult to understand how someone who has likely seen neither team play say that Westfield has the better "defence" (sic).
I like Wood's chances, though I would not be surprised if Westfield won. I believe Wood's has a more diciplined team with enough difference makers (Callahan, Huntsman, Anderson, Battle, etc...) to match Westfields athletes. Just my admittedly biased 2 cents.

I hear it will be raining pretty good tomorrow, plus the cold so bundle up!!:D Hope it's not like 2007 when we played Stony Point in Huntsville. That weather was horrid!
From what I have currently seen, the Wildcats runs the same offense as Falls, just with a better O-line. High scoring offense that can give up just as many points on defense. I'm seeing a common trend amongst the Cy Schools, do all of them run the spread offense?
Westfield is stacked in their skill positions, it's almost not fair the kind of athletes they put on the field. But they have work to do, and I'm sure they're not looking ahead at Skyline or Desoto. I wouldn't look ahead at any of those two teams!!
Another big key for Westfield will be DT Jackson on defense. He's a beast and he'll give your o-line headaches the entire game. With him back healthy, the defense can regain their early-season clobbering form. Woods are better than Conroe so this should be a treat to watch.
Hope everyone has a safe trip tomorrow!!:D

There is ALOT of speed at almost every position for Westfield. You are correct in saying that Westfield is LOADED with athletes. Woods will have to play mistake free assignment football on defense. One mistake and the speed of the WF rb's will make you pay dearly. Falls did not have the speed on defense to contain them. And on offense Falls could not keep the DT out of the backfield long enough or often enough for Poole to look at his recievers.

I would but not by much. I think we are more potent at running back (now that Fred is back) and Bryce and several of the jr starters from last year are one year older. Colton is a better runner at qb and a very good passer. The one exception would be linebacker. Last years linebacking corp is likely better. O line coach claims that this years line is better than last year. Just my 2 cents.

A little bit.....the QB has matured.....kinda hard to measure. It depends by what game you are measuring. Their potential is as good as last year. A lot depends on which Westfield team shows up....They are capable of laying 42 points on a Conroe team that hung within 7 of Lufkin and within 6 of Klein Collins.

I saw Woods play last Saturday and have watched the Mustangs this year several times. I think Woods has a good quarterback but some of his throws sailed on him. I like the way he sprints out and throws. Woods defense is good but I don't believe they are that fast. Special teams let a return score on them. Overall, a good team. The Mustangs seem to be clicking on all eight right now. Jenkins is super fast and Morning is running at full speed. No. 99 on defense is a beast. No one on Woods team will have very much success blocking him now that he is back. WHS is a threat at special teams and scores often by way of the run back. And then you have Walker. WHS 38 Woods 28.

Great game WOODS! Refs almost let it get out of hand... I thought Woods d-line and turnovers were the game changers...

fair enough but without a d-line that stops their run from forcing it down our throats they aren't throwing as much...just sayin...

I was at the game and I wanted to say some things...
First, congratulations Wildcats!! You deserved the victory.;) I wish y'all luck in the next round against Desoto/Skyline. Westfield chose the worse time to have a bad game, and the Wildcats took advantage of turnovers. Meekins was disappointing yet again. He really made his team look bad by getting a personal foul for yelling at a referee. As lousy as our offense was, he really had no room to act out of line. Our RBs looked scared, the recievers(except for #5) couldn't catch the ball, just a bad game on the offensive side. Coaching kills Westfield, and they are in dire need of a perennial winner.
I don't know what will happen next year with the Mustangs, because Jacoby Walker will be leaving early for Kansas. I've followed him since he was a sophomore and he gave us many many good memories. I wish him the best and hopefully he can make some noise for the Jayhawks.
I'll be rooting for the rest of 13-5A, Klein and Klein Collins.
