View Full Version : Most losses by a state champion

What is the most losses that a state champion ever had in 5A in Texas.
I think I remember that Beaumont West Brook had 4 or 5 losses in 82 when they beat LD Bell in Dome and their QB played Nose Guard as well. I know Plano had 3 losses in 94 and got roasted as being not worthy of a D1 title.
Where is WOS87 when you need him?:D

You mean the year that PESH had the shirts that said,.
3rd in District
2nd in City
1st in State?
I recall both Lake Highlands and PESH easily defeating Plano that year as well as Mesquite. In Planos defense I believe the returned the favor to Mesquite in the playoffs. Katy als had 3 defeats last year
I am pretty sure that Beamont West Brook did hve a few losses as well as possibly Beaumont French in 84 who tied Permian.

That is the most I remember. Btrain38 and I was at the Game on the Bell Side. I think it was Jerry Ball that played Fullback and Nose Guard. Trinity had 5 losses getting to the Championship Game with Judson in '92. They came out with 6 losses!

To the best of my recollection, Westbrook finished 11-3-1 or 10-3-1 when they won state.

That's funny Permian also had three losses when they played in 94, I thought when they played in 77/78 both teams were undefeated. So if Plano had one loss and a tie in 87 that would be crazy wierd.:notworthy
West Brook was 11-4-1 in '82.
Started 0-2, then lost in week five and seven. Their tie came in the area round of the playoffs.
Port Arthur Lincoln, 18-12
Houston Kashmere, 28-27
Beaumont French, 13-6
Port Aruthur Jefferson, 28-14
Baytown Sterling, 7-7

Plano was undefeated in 87. 16-0 including a win over MOJO. Permian was undefeated in 77 & 78 before the Plano games and were not when the whistle blew at the end of the game.

1953 - Port Neches
The only UIL State Champion to win a title with less than 9 wins in a season going 8-4-1
Out of the 350+ teams to win a state title since 1920, none have lost more than 4 games in their respective championship seasons....
There are a few though that are tied with 4 losses....
1953 - Port Neches 8-4-1
1950 - Wichita Falls 9-4-0
1998 - Grapevine 10-4-0
1982 - Beaumont West Brook 11-4-1
1984 - Beaumont French 11-4-1
2003 - North Crowley 11-4-0
1989 - Tyler Chapel Hill 12-4-0
2003 - Atlanta 12-4-0
I know there is a 9th one that I am missing...

That's the difference between a great program and a legendary program... knowing how to win when it really counts. Plano, Permian, CJ and Katy are experts of doing just that. When did PESH win their last football championship?

Nope... Lee only lost 3 games in 2004 according to my records. They lost to Lufkin 33-44, Euless Trinity 39-42 and Longview 31-34... and paid Trinity back by beating them in the Semifinals 28-7

Sure the great ones know how to win when it counts, but as we have debated since this board has been around it is hard to overlook the facts that are presented to a path a team has to take to the state championship. I do not recall Mesquites record in '94 but I believe that is who Plano opened up with in the playoffs, they then beat a Duncanville team in round 2 who ended the year with a losing record. They then got a 3 loss Lufkin team in round 3 and a 3 loss Permian team in the semis. Correct me if I am wrong but I do not think Permian was district champs in '94, same with Mesquite and I know Duncanville and Lufkin were not. PESH and Lake Highlands on the other hand had to contend with a damn good John Tyler team(16-0) who also had to go through a very good Arlington High team in the semis before dismantling Westlake in the finals. So while mocking the shirts or what the PESH fans were saying, it was warranted when you compare division 1 and division 2 that year.

Galveston Ball started the season in 1994 at 0-4. Thet won a game and then lost another to stand at 1-5. They then went on to sneak into the playoffs and go all the way to the semi-final. They never lost after starting 1-5 but tied Westlake at 26-26 and lost on the tie-break system. I wonder if they would have won it all after a 1-5 start and they were so very very close to doing what may not have ever been done.

OMG - The sage got one wrong. SA Roosevelt was 11-5 in winning the state title. So yes, they were 5-5 and then caught fire in the playoffs, beating Flower Mound Marcus. Mark this down in red letters. This won't EVER happen again.

The record is West Brook with 4, but it would've been Trinity if they could've only scored an extra 53 points!:D
Judson could've tied West Brook a couple times, but ran into Trinity both times.
