Austin College is the oldest in Texas. Even Baylor is older than A&M.

It varies from school to school. The SAT and ACT are standardized tests; they are the great equalizer. They represent what you should know by the time you take it. So when Carroll or other schools score higher (on average) on these tests, it's fair to say they have mastered those skills better. Remember: there's no one to pay off to raise SAT/ACT scores. So, when I ask you whether you mean "quite a school" or "a quiet school," I'm being serious.

3) real fan- achieved only through graduation or obtaining sponsorship from an alumnus of said U.

AGREED it does vary from school to school, but class rank does mean something. If your number 1 you are validictorian(sp?), and if your in the top 10% of your class you are guarenteed into Texas universities.

I always knew where I was at and I tracked it each semester to see how far I moved up since going between 2 high schools penalized me some with different systems for honor graduates.

I was destined to be Salutatorian (out of 160) if I had stayed in Pittsburg, but I switched to Mt. Pleasant before my sophomore year. I was not aware that they went by a grade points system with weighted points for harder classes. That meant I lost points in my Sophomore year, too. I think I started my junior year in 13th, my senior year in 9th, and they quit counting halfway through the year where I finished in 7th out of 269. I probably would've been 6th if they had counted the whole year and close to 5th. I would've been 3rd in Mt. Pleasant if I had gone there for all 4 years and known how the system worked.

That rule is somewhat unfair, but you'll get into discrimination issues if you change the rule. They have to have a way to encourage students from around the state to attend college. Furthermore, it also helps make more parts of the state educated. If a bunch of SLC kids go to UT, they'll just move back to Dallas and leave the other parts of the state behind, but you can educate the whole state if you balance out admissions with the current rule.
