Did something bad happen there today? I'm at work and I was just reading another message board and they said something happened but no one had responded.

What's the name?
I would recommend easing off the politics/humor for a bit. Being in Texas, and the location it's not unlikely that there may be personal knowledge of one or more of the victims.

I was just curious whether they said it was middle eastern or did it just sound middle eastern to you? Just a straight up question. No hidden meaning to it.

no it was very middle eastern sounding but they won't say where he was originally from just yet. I couldn't tell you exactly what the name was besides the fact it was three names ....

Neither am I. Just grew up watching International Cricket. Most who do have a feel for the difference between Indian and Pakistani names. If this was politically motivated there's a better chance the perpetrator was Pakistani rather than Indian anyway.

Really sad. I hear he was a mental health professional too. Which is odd.
I hope no one here is closely connected to anything. A girl I am dating is a VaTech grad and was there when everything went down over there. And she is clearly still deeply affected by that day. Wouldnt wish that upon anyone. Super sad stuff.

which would make it even more likely that the shooter had ties to an islamic terror organization.

If the shooting is deemed as a terrorist act perpetrated by Islamic extremists, this could make life very tough for Arab and Islamic Americans in the Military.

I just heard this in a interview with a cousin of his. He had evidently been trying to get out of the military since before a transfer from Walter Reed to Fort Hood last May. That brings to question how could he not get out of the military?.

He could get out of the military. Just pay back the medical school costs that the US Government put out for him. His agreed upon term of service was not up so that is the only way to get out of the obligation.

I talked to my nephew there. He's a Sargent Major and said it was a little wild for a bit. His wife works at Darnel which is the hospital on post and they were still ub lock down but he said she told him that casualties were come in fast and furious.
I lived there for 5 years just out side the main gate...I hate hearing of this crap on an Army post.
God bless our troops!

Covemom, I have to disagree, in certain MOS they will keep you until your commitment is fullfilled. His being in the medical field, I doubt they would let him out until he had done his time...He had offered and the Army said, finish what you commited to, as they should have.

Okay. I think when you combine what I said with your last sentence we are saying the same things, with a small (but significant) difference. ANYONE can get out for "valid" reasons and his opposition to the war coupled with his religion, his previous written words, etc., would have been enough if it were not for the enormous amount of money spent to train him as a Medical Doctor specializing in Psychiatry.
It was probably a mistake to put him on deployment status (no kidding) but apparently the red flags raised in Washington were not communicated to Fort Hood. His supervisor at Fort Hood said he did his job well and that he was not aware of any previous issues. Maybe that is a smokescreen for now, but until proven otherwise I will take the Colonel at his word.
This is tragic all the way around. It is a sad day in Central Texas.
