Buster Olney gave some interesting stats this morning as the Yanks celebrated their most expensive crown this decade (so far).
MLB players are eligible for free agency after 6 years, however, they can file arbitration beginning in Year 3.
Olney reports that, since so many teams are losing money and simply have puny revenues that are 20% of the Empire, they will cut arbitrators this season.
Olney stated that GM's are speculating upwards of 100 high-paid players filing for arbitration will be cut before the end of the year and be out of work.
Then what?
Cashman swoops in a picks up another 4 or 5 prime players, the Mets, Angels, Bosox and Philly get 1-2 more as well, and the others re-sign at much lower deals to the poor boys.
NYY payroll could easily hit $250M next year, while 50% of teams will slash their payroll by upwards of 50% just to stay afloat.
The odds of any east or west coast team other than the Cards making another World Series in the next 5 years is virtually nil.

Yankees have $42+ million coming off the books this season. Doubtful they'll be able to spend 90 million this off season to increase their payroll to $250 million. They don't really have any glaring holes besides replacing Andy Pettitte so outside of starting pitching (something that is rarely on the market) I don't see the Yankees making any huge free-agent splashes.

I love PO baseball. The situations and the intensity on every pitch, but it is getting harder and harder to watch. The 2 best pitchers should still be Cleveland Indians. What a mess.

This. I'll also add that I'm not anti-dynasty. I love it when the big boys are good. It makes things seem more legit. When you have teams that can sport payrolls and give contracts that are high than/worth more than some FRANCHISES are worth, though ....... Massive fail. Just because a team like Florida or Tampa rises up and makes run or even wins a title doesn't mean this game isn't broken.
