You see my point here? Brees has a long ways to go before he will ever be mentioned with these guys.

The voice of reason. To be honest he's not even the best player out of Texas to ever suit up for the Saints. That would be Earl Cambell. I realize N.O. got the beat down version but still overall bodies of work aren't really comparable yet.

I do cut the Cajun some slack here, though. His team is flying high and among the elite of the league this season. Enjoy the ride!

I'd say he's a couple of rings away from being the best QB out of Texas.
Further out to be the best player.

There have been some great ones, but it is hard to argure with that pick. A MLB who moved to RB his Sr year in HS. He loved to hit.

Like I said, I like the guy and he is a helluva player, but lets wait and see if he wins anything of significance and if he ever gets in the Hall of Fame. He's got a long ways to go before he will ever be considered with the greats I listed, pound for pound or otherwise.

Winning over 4,500,000 Cajuns would be significant-might it not?..Who needs the Hall of Fame...

Dude is a machine. His mechanics are simply flawless with the most perfectly consistent release point in the history of the league. He's talented and dedicated. Let's revisit this topic in a few years when there's more to examine. EVER is a longtime and would suggest career merits, not seasons.

After watching him 4 years now his "mental mechanics" are what set him apart in my book...Brees always seems to make the proper read and get the ball to the right man...Always prepared as well...

Gotta give props to Both Drew Brees and Sean Payton for being at another level that is rarely seen between a HC and QB...

what i can't understand is how a qb so obviously under-sized and thus basically an after-thought as a recruit, and even as a draft-pick, can even be mentioned as a star in a league that employs such physical specimins as byron leftwich, jamarcus russell, jake delhome, and mark bulger. blasphemous, i tell you.

The difference between Brees and the rest of the bunch...Drew has the "IT" factor for being a great QB and and a great leader.

My wife and I were watching the pre-game huddle chant that he leads the Saints before each game...wife turns to me and says "That's what a true QB does, he leads his team even before the game starts...why can't Romo do that for us?"...:(

Think of All-Time Texas greats like:
Earl Campbell
Eric Dickerson
Ladainian Tomlinson
Thurman Thomas
Tim Brown
Dante Hall
Eric Metcalf
Doak Walker
Sammy Baugh
Vince Young
Ty Detmer
Richmond Webb
Jessie Armstead
Aaron Wallace
Ken Hall
Michael Carter
Santana Dotson
Billy Ray Smith
Brian Bosworth
Bobby Taylor
Keith Mitchell
William Thomas
Derrick Johnson
Cedric Benson
Jacquizz Rodgers

and a gazillion others!

Then, there's Brees:
HSFB - Texas 5A Offensive Player of the Year w/ 3,528 yds and 31 tds, in 1996. (Won a State Title w/ Westlake)
CFB - Heisman Finalist who set Big Ten records for career passing yds (11,792), pass-tds (90), and ttl yds (12,693).
NFL - 3-Time All-Pro who is on track to pass for 50,488 yds and 332 tds, if he plays 15 total yrs.

He might end up being the most successful player in Texas history if he wins at least 1 Super Bowl and becomes an AP NFL POTY, also, at least once.

He's got some tough competition. While these are old-style guys, and you can argue the modern game is faster paced, etc, they were some fine QB's:

Davey O'Brien
Sammy Baugh
Bobby Layne

Give him some seasoning and a few years, we'll see. Sometimes the legacy isn't defined until later in the career. I personally have always like him and hope he can establish that kind of a career, building on a fine career so far.

Just to add a few more Texas born NFL H.O.F. to your list,
Mel Renfro
Lance Alworth
Mike Haynes
Ken Houston
Darrell Green
Night Train Lane
Forrest Gregg
Don Maynard
Emmit Thomas
Raymond Berry
Y.A. Tittle
Mike Singletary
Ollie Matson
Charlie Taylor
Gene Upshaw

Brees is good, but let his career playout before we crown him.

He's not the best, but he's among them. I believe he gets the most out of the ability God gave him. San Diego is going to cry a little if the Saints get to the Super Bowl. The earth might change it's rotation round the sun if they win it. I would love to see Brees go up against Favre for the NFC crown.

:D your are so right. I still remember the "'Aint's" with the paper sacks. Soooo regretted when Earl went there. I am happy for NO and for Brees, I do hope he becomes one of the all-time greats.

There is probably at least 10 Texas players that went on into the NFL that are better overall then Drew Brees.

Earl Campbell and Eric Dickerson are probably 1 or 2 when it all said and done. As much as I love Earl Campbell , I still think Eric Dickerson was probably a better overall RB. Eric Dickerson would of owned all the NFL rushing records if he would of kept his ego and attitude in check.

Thurman Thomas is another Texas RB that helped take Buffalo to several Super Bowls.

Another Texas QB that had a very solid NFL career but never really had the strongest supporting cast around him was Tommy Kramer.

Tommy Kramer led San Antonio RE.LEe to the Tx 4A Title and went on to Rice where he was an All-American QB and 1st Round Draft Pick for the Minnesota Vikings.

He took the Vikings to the playoffs a few times and went to 1 Pro Bowl and in 1986 was rated the #1 QB in the NFL.

He just never really had a lot of support around him but was a great overall NFL QB that really had the same kind of skills sets (if not better) than Drew Brees.

32/39 for 288 with 2 TD and zero INT

Colts did a pretty good job in stopping the Saints deep game, but Brees took what he could and took alot of it...

I lean way towards defense but I can't see him surpassing Tommy Nobis, Bob Lilly, Joe Greene, or Mike Singletary
