UIL will let you have either a spring program or start practice two weeks earlier, from what I understand. But what im curious about, is to know how everyone is looking for spring ball? For the schools that do have spring ball. Post your thoughts projected starters or anything that relates. :p

Abilene Cooper kicks of spring practice April 25th and should end in May with the Spring game.

JTK, what do you think about Cooper's situation going into spring? I think year two under Secord will yield better results, and I think Cooper has some good players back despite graduating a few "big timers." Returning a player like Chris Hall is always a plus, and that transfer RB Jerry Harper isn't bad either. I've got more doubts about the defense than anything (talented LBs to replace).

KT, Jerry Harper is indeed a real speedy and elusive back- much more dangerous than the other TB (Demetrius Gore). Gore has the size but not the moves IMHO. I would sure like to see Harper wearing the black and gold across the tracks :D . A lot of the forum posters over at the LSWC site are predicting that Lee and Abilene High will battle it out for the district title but I for one never count out the Coogs.

If a team doesn't do spring ball, they have ONE extra week in August.

I'm really excited about this season and my expectations are pretty high. Last year we werent able to do our Spring practice because most of the new coaches didnt even get here until the Summer break. So instead of having to cram everything into a month or two like last year, the coaches can take their time and really work things out.

Offense should be very interesting. Cooper only returns one starting WR (Matt Donahue), but Cooper has never had a problem with WRs and I dont think that is going to change. In fact, we should have some good young WRs coming up. The O-line is my biggest concern. We only return one starter (Cory Tucker), but I have been told we have some very good linemen coming up. The most interesting change should occur in the backfield. I have been told by numerous people that the offense is being tweaked a bit to allow both RBs in the backfield at the same time. Demetrius Gore as more of a power runner and lead blocker and Jerry Harper has the speed guy and main running threat. Cooper will still work out of the shotgun, but this will give us more options since both can carry the ball and both are very good receivers. I really like the experience at key positions on offense.

Defense is the biggest concern for me as well just because we have to replace so many kids. They only area that I'm confident about is the secondary because we return two starters in S Norman Gregory and CB Sean Holamon along with Brandon Newsome who saw quite a bit of playing time. DL and LB however are going to be interesting. As best I can recall, LB Jeff Smith will be the only guy with any experience at all. All that being said, coach Secord is a defense first kinda guy. It is what he does best and I expect to see a fundamentally sound group even if they dont have a lot of experience.

We have some great kids coming up including a few coaches kids. Some have tried to tell me that QB Zach Stewart (6'2 190) will beat out Chris Hall for the starting QB job. I dont know if I believe that (though Zach is very good), but I guess it is something to watch. I expect this team to be a lot more prepared than they were last year and I fully expect to see the Coogs back in the playoffs.

Spring ball is a time to become a better football player. After all the hard work and running and lifting during the offseason it's a time where the coaches can see how the hard work was translated into making their kids better football players.

Well of course my favorite topic to talk about that involves Leander is the QB issue bc my best friend is the back up...The other day Curenski Gilleylen said something to me about earning the starting spot...Apparently he feels very comfortable that he has the job because he's been getting to many reps for him not to...He thinks he has it, but that's just a rumor. Coach Gideon said that having him on the bench is like keeping a Ferrari in the garage so I think that's a pretty good sign...FINALLY!!!!

Can you get me the dates of the Leander spring practices, and if they have a spring game to end their spring practices...that would be the biggest thing, find out what day the game is...I'm due back to Leander (just moved in to Leander, TX) in the end of may, but if it's earlier than that, I want to try and come down for the game. My mother just bought a house a stone's throw from the Leander stadium in Lakeline Ranch...

Coach J has hired 1 coach. Mecants or something from Spring Westfield. He will most likely be the rb coach and there are still more coaches being interviewed.

Well what I heard from the players is that they are not having spring ball because the new coach just took over a couple of weeks ago. I think it has its pros and cons but I think in this one Coach is making a good decision. The old coach ran an option offense and the new offense is a spread type offense. Also when the old coach got reassigned the offensive and defensive coordinators also resigned, so its basically starting over from scratch. I hope the coaching change will benefit the seniors becasue they have been working hard since sophomore year. As a former football player I can attest to that.

Having been through the spring workouts at Tyler Lee I can say that the players, coaches, fans, and media all look forward to it. It usually starts the first 3 days in pads and shorts and after that, its full-pads.

I think the spring drills are great, it helps the coaching staff evaluate their teams speed and strenght for the upcoming fall season. Alot of the kids will put on weight in the offseason which can be good and bad. You usually find one or two kids who didn't do all that great the previous season come out and make some big plays or some huge hits in the spring game. Those position coaches don't forget over the summer how well or how poor a kid does in the spring game and sometimes it can make a second teamer a first teamer instantly. At Lee, its usually first team vs second team in the spring game with real time reffs calling the game. It should be exciting to watch!

Go Tyler Lee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea right now, they have Curisnkie and Drew Rotating with the First Team Offense to see which one is better. But Josh McKinley is another one who is impressive. He's 6'3 200 and runs a 4.5

Our new coach told us we aren't having spring football because there is too much to learn. We are getting a new coach, new coordinators, and new offense/defense schemes. We have been doing nothing but learning the past month and all together have learned at most 5 plays on offense and absolutley nothing on defense. Mainly formations and then running the 5 plays we have learned. TAKS also has halted us the past week.

So Katy has hired a new RB coach from what I read in an earlier post. Do they still have coaches to hire and if so, what positions? Do they have a new offensive coordinator? And didn't they lose a QB coach?

Katy has a pretty good qb coming back. their passing game was lacking some last year. hopefully if they did hire a new qb coach he will bring some passing game experience which should help them.

KT2000
05-06-2005, 06:13 PM
Katy's passing has been more due to personnel type recently. From 2001 through 2004, Katy had two power backs (Eric Worley and James Aston) who received the workload and the offense was designed to grind it out with guys like that.

Obviously, it'd be nice to say "team x needs a balanced offense" and then, poof, it happens at the snap of a finger. However, you need the right players or else it won't happen/won't work no matter what the scheme.

2005 will mark the first time since the 2000 season that Katy has a healthy crop of speed, and also in some cases, size at every skill position. There are actually dbs and receivers on campus very near or above the 6'0 mark which doesn't happen very often at Katy.
