Where-Yellowjacket Stadium in Alto

The District

District 20-1A is home to Cayuga and Alto, as well as other East Texas 1A schools Cushing, Grapeland, Malakoff Cross Roads, Overton, and Price Carlisle.

Cayuga is heading into this tough, week 9 contest, fresh off of a bye week. They got some rest, and has had 2 weeks to prepare for Alto. Meanwhile, Alto comes in rolling after beating Cushing, 40-0.

The Teams

The 10th ranked Wildcats are led at the helm, by coach Tommy Allison. Allison, and the Wildcats, came into this season with alot of confidence, after playing in the 1A-D2 championship game last season. They were defeated by a great Stratford team, by a score of 24-13. The 'Cats also brung back 7 starters on offense, and 7 more on defense, from last season's state finalist squad. Leading the Wildcats into this year on offense, is All Everything RB Traylon Shead. Shead is a 6'3, 210 monster, that can run inside and outside, with legit 4.5 speed. Shead ran his way to 3,510 rushing yards last year, while garnering All State honors. Shead has a little help on offense though, as WR Malcome Kennedy returned from last year's team, as well as Traylon's brother, OL Tramon Shead. Defensively, the 'Cats are led by LB Shakeal Jenkins, DB Billy Duncan, and DL Melvin Shead (yes, another one).

The Wilcats lone loss came in week 0, to 2A Frankston, 33-26. But, to no avail, the 'Cats have been rolling ever since, and is fired up about this one.

The 4th ranked Yellowjackets come into this season led by coach Keith Gardner. Coach Gardner took this squad 2 rounds deep last season, as they finished 8-4, while reaching the 1A-D1 quarterfinals. On the offensive side of the ball, the 'Jackets are led by QB Javante Jones, and an offensive line that returned EVERY starter from last season's squad. Defensively, the 'Jackets, just like Cayuga, returned 7 starters from last season's team. LBs Malcio Houston and Rhett Gresham lead a feisty Alto defense, that loves to hit, and fly to the ball.

The Yellowjackets lone loss this season, came at the hands of 2A #1 Arp. Arp whooped up on Alto back in week 2 but, the 'Jackets have had no problems since. On a sidenote, Alto and Cayuga both have one common, non district opponent, in 2A Frankston. Alto defeated Frankston back in week 3, before rolling into district.

At Stake

District bragging rights are on the line for this one. This will be the last game of the season for Alto, as they come in 5-0 in district, while Cayuga comes in at 4-0, and will end their season at home, against Grapeland. Both teams are already in the postseason but, this is still a very important game for both of these squads. Alto has had a solid tradition for awhile now, and Cayuga would love to put a little bit of a bruise on that tradition.

Prediction

Cayuga and Alto are both on a mission this year, and neither one will let anything, or anyone, get in the way. I expect both teams to come out breathing fire, to keep the momentum up for the postseason. Even though Alto did come out on top against Frankston, and Cayuga didn't, I don't think that'll mean anything, come Friday night. I'm taking Traylon and Co. in this one!
